  • Why are my DNS Lookups so long (300+ms) when accessing my web site?

    I'm running a Fedora 11 server with Apache 2. I'm trying to optimize so things are as fast as possible from the server side, and I'm noticing (via Firebug for Firefox) that upon loading the homepage of one of the sites on the web server that for every file it loads (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GIF, PNG, JPG, etc.), it does a DNS lookup. All of the files it is looking up are local to the server, so I'm surprised to see it even do a DNS lookup. Also, each of these lookups is in the 150-450ms range, which is way too high for my liking. I've tried adjusting /etc/resolve.conf to use Google's Public DNS servers. I restarted the network service and tapped the page again, but the numbers didn't go down. I've reverted back to the default DNS servers since I didn't see any gain. Any ideas on what is causing it to: a) do the dns lookup in the first place, and b) take so long when doing the actual lookup? Thanks in advance.

  • How to (properly) back up a live QEMU/KVM VM?

    I'm currently engineering a backup solution for KVM VM's as an additional measure to traditional backups. Unfortunately, all currently (August 2013) existing solutions I came across so far either: do not ensure a consistent backup of the VM (losing RAM state, creating a dirty image, or other things), or require lengthy downtime (complete VM shutdown while backing up). I'm aware of QEMU/libvirt's functionality of taking snapshots, however, it's not yet usable since: image-internal snapshots present you with an ever-changing image file, resulting in a likely dirty backup (assuming one uses qcow2 images at all). one cannot yet merge a currently active external snapshot into the original backing image ("blockcommit"). Out of the above reasons, I'm now implementing a script that: Saves the VM's state and halts it Sets up a devicemapper snapshot(s) where the VM's disk images and state reside Resumes the VM Mount the snapshot(s) of step 2. Backs up the VM's disk and state (configuration for convenience) Merges back the snapshot(s). If I got everything right, this will take consistent backups of VM's with only seconds (if at all, since 1-3 is fast, possibly sub-second) of downtime. Of course, when restoring, the VM will be way in the past, but at least giving me the option of an orderly shutdown/reboot. Am I missing something with this solution? Or has someone indeed already implemented this?

  • Why can't I 'justify' text that I have copied from PDF into MS Word?

    I find it really annoying that when I copy text that looks good in Adobe Reader into Word, the sentences which are left-aligned by default won't change accordingly when I press 'Justify'. The only way I could get the result I need is to press back-spaces and Delete key to align the right border. Why is this? Here's an example from the Word document. The text is right- and center-aligning perfectly but Justify does not seem to work.

  • ms excel 2010 in windows xp - when open workbook the data is formatted differently than when i saved it

    I haven't been able to find an answer to this. I have multiple files that I use regularly in excel that now have cell formats of "date". Every single cell in the entire workbook (all sheets) is now formatted as "date". The problem is that I lost my formatting for percents, numbers years, etc and now everything is converted to date (xx/xx/xxxx). I am able to open previously saved versions of a file (prior to me having the problem) and the cells are formatted as I intend them to be (percents, numbers, general, as well as dates). Since this has happened on a couple different files recently, I am wondering how this is happening and how do I prevent it from happening in the future. I cannot cure the problem just by highlighting the entire sheet and converting back to general because I lose all my percents and number formatting.     I currently receive emails with a very very long subject line (generated by another system) of which I cannot see the end (specifically a date and time), despite widening the field as much as I can. Can anybody suggest how can I either see the end of the subject line and sort by these criteria or preferably move the date and time text from the end to the beginning of the subject line so I can sort by it, perhaps using VB?

  • How do I improve picture quality while streaming live football (soccer) from my Dell D600 to an HDTV?

    I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.

    In Excel I understand there is no mechanism to customise & re-label the Rows & Columns (i.e. Renaming Col. A to some text like "Item Number" and so on. My question is regarding if it's possible to start Row Numbering at zero, or to determine a pre-allocated number of rows which contain my Headers, and then the first Row with the detail is infact seen as Row 1? Reason for question is I work multiple INternational Projects and we use Excel to trsack alot of activities & issues. Oddly, many people will refer to, for example "Point 7"... Some people mean the ID 7 (which I have the first Column dedicated to ID Number), some mean Excel Row 7, which infact could be really ID 3, or 4 from Col. A.... Any easy way or workaround to just use the Excel Row Numbers but select from when Row 1 is counted?

  • Is it possible to live-boot VirtualBox from a USB flash drive?

    To clarify, I'm not asking if you can boot from USB from within VirtualBox. I would like to make a portable version of Windows 7 that I can run from a USB drive on any machine. I'm putting a distro of Linux on my laptop, but I manage a Windows domain at work so I'd like an easier management solution than trying to use Linux tools to interface with a Windows DC(as RDP to a DC is not always an option). The reason I'm inquiring about VirtualBox... I plan on carrying this portable installation with me and using it on multiple machines, so I would like to avoid driver conflicts (which I imagine would happen if I only installed Windows on a flash drive). Basically, I need a way to boot an installation of Windows 7 from USB that still allows me to install/remove/update programs as if it were installed on a standard hard drive, and not freak out over different hardware configurations. Please help, superusers!

They only setting is to ENABLE or DISABLE this feature. I was wondering if there is a way to change this policy? IF so where?

    I want to only link, not embed, pictures in my Word document. Yet I got a lot of images to insert! And I want to spare me the additional click into the dropdown menu one and for all, so the question is, is there any way to set "link image(s)" as default? Because I didn't find anything in the Word settings, only totally useless detail settings. This "detail" has been overseen by Microsoft it seems! :( I would provide you with a screenshot, but it would be German anyways. I think the guys who use image linking in Word since v2007, will know what I mean. Thank you in advance! Best regards

    I have Microsoft Office 2003 first in my computer and since we are on the migration stage to Microsoft Access 2007, I also installed the Microsoft Access 2007 in the same computer. Now I have the 2003 and 2007 in my PC. Do you think it will cause any problem if I do the migration, that I have the two version of the Access in the computer? Additional Question: I'm just wondering why I'm getting the below window every time I open the Microsoft Access 2003 Microsoft Access 2007. It's really strange. Before I was able to open it after I install the Office 2007 after 3 days it just started this strange thing. I don't have any clue.

  • Advised auditing method for MS SQL to track changes made to a specific table by a specific user?

    What is the best method for tracking changes or logging the queries done to a table by a specific user when the person is using Management Studio? I'm using 2008 R2 Express Edition and want to specifically track a single user who logs in through Management studio and runs queries to make changes manually. I want to see what query was run and thus determine what was changed and how. I am not interested in restoring the information. I considered Change Tracking but read that it is not ideal for auditing as well I am unsure how to read the data, then I considered the Bulk-Logging option on the database however I then have to consider handling the log files which may grow huge as the database is used constantly by a web app. I am wondering if there is a more concise method to do what I want?

    I asked for help earlier on Stackoverflow involving highlighting spans with the same Class when a mouse hovers over any Span with that same Class. However, it has also highlighted some random spans above and below it that don't have the same class! Only the span's with the same Class as the one where the mouse is over should be highlighted green. In this screenshot, only that middle green section should be green. Here is a screenshot of it working properly in Firefox/Chrome with my mouse in the exact same position: This screenshot is correct as the span that the mouse is over (the green section) is the only one in this section that shares that class.   • First site going live real soon. Last minute questions

    I am really close to finishing up on a project that I've been working on. I have done websites before, but never on my own and never a site that involved user generated data. I have been reading up on things that should be considered before you go live and I have some questions. 1) Staging... (Deploying updates without affecting users). I'm not really sure what this would entail, since I'm sure that any type of update would affect users in some way. Does this mean some type of temporary downtime for every update? can somebody please explain this and a solution to this as well. 2) Limits... I'm using the Kohana framework and I'm using the Auth module for logging users in. I was wondering if this already has some type of limit (on login attempts) built in, and if not, what would be the best way to implement this. (save attempts in database, cookie, etc.). If this is not whats meant by limits, can somebody elaborate. 3) Caching... Like I said, this is my first site built around user content. Considering that, should I cache it? 4) Back Ups... How often should I backup my (MySQL) database, and how should I back it up (MySQL export?). The site is currently up, yet not finished, if anybody wants to look at it and see if something pops out to you that should be looked at/fixed. Clashing Thoughts. If there is anything else I overlooked, thats not already in the list linked to above, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Record the timestamps of slide changes during a live Powerpoint presentation?

    I am planning to implement a lecture capture solution. One of the requirements is to record both the presenter and the slideshow. The presenter is recorded with a videocamera obviously, and the slideshow will probably be captured using a tool like Camtasia. Now during playback three components are visible: the presenter, the slides and a table of contents. Clicking a chapter title in the TOC causes the video to navigate to the corresponding section. This means that a mapping must be made between chapter titles and their timestamps in the video. Usually a change of topic is accompanied with a slide change in the Powerpoint presentation. So the timestamps could be deduced from the slidechanges. However, this requires me to detect slide changes during the live presentation. And I don't know how to do that. Anyone here knows how to do detect slide changes? Is there a Powerpoint API where I can connect event handlers or something like that? I'd greatly appreciate your help!   • How do I handle the messages for a simple web-based live chat, on the server side?

    I'm building a simple live chat into a web application running on Django, but one thing I'm confused about is how I should store the messages between users. The chat will support multiple users, and a chat "session" is composed of users connected to one user that is the "host." The application is a sort of online document collaboration thing, so user X has a document, and users Y and Z would connect to user X to talk about the document, and that would be one chat session. If user Y disconnected for five minutes, and then signed back in and reconnected to user X, he should not get any of the messages shared between users X and Z while he was away. if users X, Y, and Z can have a chat session about user X's document, then users X and Y can connect to a simultaneous, but separate discussion about user Z's document. How should I handle this? Should I keep each message in the database? Each message would have an owner user and a target user (the host), and a separate table would be used to connect users with messages (which messages are visible to what users). Or should I store each session as an HTML file on the server, which messages get appended to? The problem is, I can't just send messages directly between clients. They have to be sent to the server in a POST request, and then each client has to periodically check for the messages in a GET request. Except I can't just have each message cleared after a client fetches it, because there could be multiple clients. How should I set this up? Any suggestions?

  • Network Logon Issues with Group Policy and Network

    I am gravely in need of your help and assistance. We have a problem with our logon and startup to our Windows 7 Enterprise system. We have more than 3000 Windows Desktops situated in roughly 20+ buildings around campus. Almost every computer on campus has the problem that I will be describing. I have spent over one month peering over etl files from Windows Performance Analyzer (A great product) and hundreds of thousands of event logs. I come to you today humbled that I could not figure this out. The problem as simply put our logon times are extremely long. An average first time logon is roughly 2-10 minutes depending on the software installed. All computers are Windows 7, the oldest computers being 5 years old. Startup times on various computers range from good (1-2 minutes) to very bad (5-60). Our second time logons range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. We have a gigabit connection between each computer on the network. We have 5 domain controllers which also double as our DNS servers. Initial testing led us to believe that this was a software problem. So I spent a few days testing machines only to find inconsistent results from the etl files from xperfview. Each subset of computers on campus had a different subset of software issues, none seeming to interfere with logon just startup. So I started looking at our group policy and located some very interesting event ID’s. Group Policy 1129: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. Group Policy 1055: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). NETLOGON 5719 : This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain OURDOMAIN due to the following: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. E1kexpress 27: Intel®82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection – Network link is disconnected. NetBT 4300 – The driver could not be created. WMI 10 - Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. More or less with timestamps it becomes apparent that the network maybe the issue. 1:25:57 - Group Policy is trying to discover the domain controller information 1:25:57 - The network link has been disconnected 1:25:58 - The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has successfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator. 1:25:58 - Making LDAP calls to connect and bind to active directory. DC1.ourdomain.edu 1:25:58 - Call failed after 0 milliseconds. 1:25:58 - Forcing rediscovery of domain controller details. 1:25:58 - Group policy failed to discover the domain controller in 1030 milliseconds 1:25:58 - Periodic policy processing failed for computer OURDOMAIN\%name%$ in 1 seconds. 1:25:59 - A network link has been established at 1Gbps at full duplex 1:26:00 - The network link has been disconnected 1:26:02 - NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of discovery error. NtpClient will try again in 3473457 minutes and DOUBLE THE REATTEMPT INTERVAL thereafter. 1:26:05 - A network link has been established at 1Gbps at full duplex 1:26:08 - Name resolution for the name %Name% timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. 1:26:10 – The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service entered the running state. 1:26:11 - The time provider NtpClient is currently receiving valid time data at dc4.ourdomain.edu 1:26:14 – User Logon Notification for Customer Experience Improvement Program 1:26:15 - Group Policy received the notification Logon from Winlogon for session 1. 1:26:15 - Making LDAP calls to connect and bind to Active Directory. dc4.ourdomain.edu 1:26:18 - The LDAP call to connect and bind to Active Directory completed. dc4. ourdomain.edu. The call completed in 2309 milliseconds. 1:26:18 - Group Policy successfully discovered the Domain Controller in 2918 milliseconds. 1:26:18 - Computer details: Computer role : 2 Network name : (Blank) 1:26:18 - The LDAP call to connect and bind to Active Directory completed. dc4.ourdomain.edu.
