• How do I permanently disable Linux's console screen saver, system-wide?

  I've got an Ubuntu server that boots up in text mode. It rarely has a screen or keyboard attached to it, but when I do attach a screen, I usually have to attach a keyboard too, because the darn console mode screen saver will be on and I'll need to hit a key to see what's going on. I'm aware that the setterm command can disable this, but it's a per-session thing. How can I make it so the machine never ever blanks the screen in text mode, even when it's first booted up and sitting at the login prompt?

  Anyone know why doesn't the Windows command prompt window maximize to the full screen size? To the best of my knowledge, even in the new Windows 7 the command prompt window(cmd.exe) doesn't maximize to the full screen size like all other windows. This behavior is quite annoying for me, and I'm sure to many others as well. Note: The size of the command prompt window can be changed, but the size remains fixed regardless of the screen size.

• What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

  The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

• I dropped my hp laptop and it has been on the startup repair screen for hours now--what can I do?

  I dropped my hp laptop (I have windows 7). There was a blue screen with the cursor. It took about an hour or two for the startup repair screen to appear. Then it says to wait at least an hour. I've been charging my laptop for around a day now and the same screen, with a bar with blue moving, is still there. It says it's fixing disc errors. What can I do to get to the windows screen with usernames and pictures/fix it? thanks.

• Is there a way to make Windows 8 delay loading the start screen until all startup programs have loaded?

  Currently Windows 8 will get to the start screen a good 10-15 seconds before my startup programs have loaded. Since these include my touchpad driver as well as a gamma correction program, I would prefer that they would load before this point. Is there anyway to do this - either by delaying Windows 8 showing the start screen, or perhaps by somehow having these programs run before reaching the login screen?

  I have a web hosting account at HostGator (for a domain registered with GoDaddy), where I would like to only use email, and completely turn off the website/webserver (for that domain), such that it actually gives the following error like any other domain which isn't pointing to anything, so in Firefox it would be: Or in Chrome it would be: So I am not looking for just a blank page or server 403 error, but literally for it to act like it doesn't exist and the only way someone would know that the domain is in use, is if they WHOIS search it or know any of the email addresses on the main server. N.B. the domain is the parent domain in the HostGator account and other websites (which need to still be operational) are under it, but I'm thinking with DNS settings it can still be configured while keeping the one hosting account. How would I configure this?

But I'm very worried about the impact it will have on my career and ability to find a job afterwards. I have 3 years experience in .NET on top of a couple of years in PHP. Right now, I'm a senior software engineer. Do you think taking two years off to do math is going to dramatically hurt my marketability?

I blew the sample trying to get it done quickly one night, and got declined - only to be given a second chance recently. The concern was that I didn't really demonstrate object oriented knowledge. I've rethought my approach but I figure it's worth asking: if you were hiring someone for an OO position, what skills would you most want to see them demonstrate they had a firm grasp on? • Getting solutions off the internet. Bad or Good? [closed]

  I was looking on the internet for common interview questions. I came upon one that was about finding the occurrences of certain characters in an array. The solution written right below it was in my opinion very elegant. But then another thought came to my mind that, this solution is way better than what came to my mind. So even though I know the solution (that most probably someone with a better IQ had provided) my IQ was still the same. So that means that even though i may know the answer, it still wasn't mine. hence if that question was asked and i was hired upon my answer to that question i couldn't reproduce that same elegance in my other ventures within the organization My question is what do you guys think about such "borrowed intelligence"? Is it good? Do you feel that if solutions are found off the internet, it makes you think in that same more elegant way?

• Why did visual programming never take off and what future paradigms might change that?

  As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?

While we do get very good feedback, this tens to come from only the most vocal users, so we fear we might be missing the big picture. • How do I turn off all the password prompts?

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since release and am trying to figure out a couple things about all of these passwords and key-ring prompts that I've just been living with for a while. Ever since install it seems that every time I boot up my computer and want to do anything (ie. use the internet, use a internet browser, install something, delete something, pick my nose) I'm always prompted for either a normal password entry or a key-ring password entry.   I've been tinkering with fingerprint-gui as well as X/xrandr resolution settings. When I start my machine, it boots up normally. As soon as X and gnome have finished starting, it logs me off automatically and brings me back to the gdm login prompt with the user list. Then I am, however, able to log in using "Ubuntu Desktop Fail-safe". I've checked the list of start-up applications, but everything seems fine there. I can't yet put my finger on what exactly might be responsible for this: X, gnome or some messed up pam.d settings. So far I've checked /var/logs/X11/xorg.0.log, /var/logs/auth.log and ~/.xsession-errors. In addition, I don't quite seem to understand the "interplay" between X, GDM, GNOME, GNOME-policykit, PAM.d and all that. Are there any other relevant log files that could point me to what's broken? Specs: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R60, ATI Radeon x1400 Mobility all updates installed Linux User 1 year+,

• WHy CAps lock is too slow to turn off in Ubuntu?

  *TH*is is a strange problem. *NO*tice how the beginning of my sentences include two capitals? Well, over the years I have developed a terrible habit... and it may be too late to fix. Instead of holding shift like a normal person to capitalize my works, I hit Caps Lock, then hit the letter, then hit Caps Lock again. PRetty weird huh? I Took an official government typing test recently and scored 99 words a minute, so it hasn't been a huge hindrance until now that I use Ubuntu. IN Ubuntu, often when I do my crazy method of typing, the Caps LOck won't turn off fast enough. IT's not my keyboard. I didn't have this problem in WIndows. IT's extremely annoying. Is there a cure for this? Took the question from Ubuntu forums because it's just explaining the same problem I am having here.

  I have a Samsung R430 notebook that has been running Ubuntu for close to a year, now. Since I've upgrated to Maverick, I've been dealing with little, but increasingly annoying issues, that put my faith to question. The first one, a CPU-intensive set of drm_kms_helper, made me compile my own kernel and set polling to off just so I could move my mouse without frequent stuttering. That led me to dealing with a screen that gets dimmer and dimmer after each sleep/wake-up cycle, which eventually leads me to reboot. Since I have seen some KMS and brightness related bugs around, I was wondering if it is a definite cause for my problem. If so, has there been any advance on the excessive polling issue for those of us plagued by it?

  I am new to Ubuntu 11.10 and never touched linux until today. I installed Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7. I have an issue with my laptop overheating and freezing when it uses the high performance GPU graphics mode (hybrid card). It is an easy fix for Windows 7. I simply set the graphics mode manually to the low performance integrated graphics (save power) mode using advanced power settings. In Ubuntu, I'm stumped at how to do this. When using Ubuntu, my laptop is showing the same symptoms as it did without the fix for Windows. I have the nVidia graphics driver installed for Windows which allows me to see which mode I am in. • How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

• How to fix indicator icons from being cut off?

  A friend of mine just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and the icons for the indicator applets all appear cut off on both the bottom and the top. See picture above. Note that the icons in the old systray/notification area on my friend's panel all still display correctly, so it's a problem with indicator clearly. My question: How can this be fixed? (I have a 10.04 system that I did a fresh install on, and I don't have this issue, so I'm guessing it's an issue with upgrading. Thanks.
