• Platform independent remote file editing

  I've been investigating possibilities on editing remote files from a website without having a need to download and upload the files manually while editing. So far I've ruled out WebDAV as a possibility since it is cumbersome to use on any platform (it either requires manual setup or works unreliably). Currently I'm looking in to various Applets, but they mostly target either uploading or downloading, not file editing. What I'm currently looking for is an applet that downloads the document, launches the application that is meant to open the file and then monitors the file for changes and uploads the changed file (either automatically or by prompting the user first). I know that I'm not alone with this scenario, so i'm looking for solutions that others have thought of.

• Rails 3 remote resubmit form with dynamic fields

  I have a form which has remote => true. When i submit it the first time everything works well. If there are any errors i want to add new fields to this form. I did this with update.js.erb. The problem is that when i resubmit this form, the result js file is rendered as html (ie i see the js file text on the screen). This is the same update.js.erb file that was rendered as js the first time... Any idea what i'm missing?

• Unable to edit and save a file on remote machine using notepad++

  I am using Notepad++ 5.3.1. I want to edit and save files on a remote machine(both are running on windows xp). I have granted the access privileges and security permissions in the folder containing the files. When I try to save any of these files after editing in Notepad ++, I get the following error. 'Please check whether if this file is opened in another program' There are no other places where the file has been opened but I still get this error. I was able to edit and save earlier but this error seems to be coming only since yesterday.

• Gem file with git remote failing on heroku push

  I have the following line in my gemfile: gem 'client_side_validations', :git => "[email protected]:Dakuan/client_side_validations.git", :branch => "master", ref: '2245b4174ffd4b400d999cb5a2b6dccc0289eb67' The repo it's pointing at is public and I can run bundle install / update locally just fine. When I try to push to Heroku I get the following error: Fetching [email protected]:Dakuan/client_side_validations.git Host key verification failed. fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Git error: command `git clone '[email protected]:Dakuan/client_side_validations.git' "/tmp/build_1xa9f06n4k1cu/vendor/bundle/ruby/1.9.1/cache/bundler/git/client_side_validations-56a04875baabb67b5f8c192c6c6743df476fd90f" --bare --no-hardlinks` in directory /tmp/build_1xa9f06n4k1cu has failed. ! !   In my deployment on JBoss 5.1.0GA with JavaEE-5 I have beans of the general form public interface Foo { void baz (); } @Stateless public class FooBean implements Foo { void baz() { // ... } } I have assumed that this is the same as if I have explicitly annotated the Foo interface with @Local. From seeing a stack trace in the code I think that it is actually using a remote interface, whereas I want all of my beans to be local. Do I need to explicitly annotate interfaces as Local or is there some default? Finding documentation on this is proving challenging so any links to relevant documentation would be greatly appreciated.

• Remote connect to mysql?

  Hi I don't use php or mysql but I am trying to upgrade a phpbb board I got but the one click installer forgot to install some stuff in the database so I can't upgrade to the newest version till I add the missing stuff. So I need to do a remote connect to mysql database but I am not sure how to do this or what software I need(free, and very easy to setup I don't want to spend much time on this). I don't really want to use phpmyadmin since I don't want to start setting up a virtual directory and whatever else it needs to be installed. Like I said I don't do php or mysql I just choose it since in my hosting package it was one click to install phpbb and I had a mysql database free. Thanks

• Flex list-controls - maintain remote data

  Hello. I have a TileList which represents some remote data. I also have a form which allows me to change the data. And the data may be changed by someone else too. What is the best way to maintain data in the list in an up-to-date state? The simplest option I see is the following: Select an item in the list Edit it in the form Save it. The form submits the data to the server When the server reports success the list re-fetches it's data The very bad thing about this workflow is that the list loses selection (a tree would also loose the nodes' expanded/collapsed state). I would really love to find out another option which would enable the list to maintain it's selection state. Any guesses on how it may be done?

• Circular reference while setting up bidirectional communication line between two remote objects

  I'm using .Net remoting to set up a bidirectional communication line between two objects. The basic structure is as follows: Instances of RemoteObjectA call methods on StaticObjectA. Instances of RemoteObjectB call methods on StaticObjectB. StaticObjectA needs to be able to call methods provided by RemoteObjectB. StaticObjectB needs to be able to call methods provided by RemoteObjectA. The problem with this setup is the circular reference in RemoteObjectA gets StaticObjectA gets RemoteObjectB gets StaticObjectB gets RemoteObjectA... I implemented an interface IRemoteObjectA and IRemoteObjectB and had the remote objects inheret from their respective interfaces, but then setting up the remoting fails. If the solution to this problem is: "don't use remoting", I can deal with that. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a simple solution.

• sql connection problem only from another computer

  I have a task that runs nightly. It connects to a sql server on our network and when I run it from my machine it runs fine. When it runs from the other computer I get the following error. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I've checked with our systems admin and he said nothing has changed on the sql box or on the box in question so I'm not sure why it runs fine from one and not the other. From what I've read about this error it sounds like it's a setting on the sql server that would disallow it to run on either box.

  Hi, I've 2 machines with names Comp1, Comp2. There is a DNS name for them, that mask them as one, let say DNSName. I get IP addresses for both machines via Dns.GetHostEntry("DNSName"). But when I try get Dns.GetHostEntry(ipAddress) entry.HostName always contains DNSName. I found some way to get name through WMI. But our policy doesn't allow WMI on remote machines. I can do parsing of nbstat -a output, but I would like to do some clean aproach to this. Is there some way?

  Hi everyone, I am developing an application using java, my application would be accessed by number of different users simultaneously and the database resides in a central server. The access of the database from remote server is handled by just giving the appropriate IP of the server in the hibernate configure file. My question is, i have to store a picture regarding each user of the database, i heard that storing the image in the database and retrieving it from the database is not advised and has negative impact on the performance. Is it so ? What are the other possible ways i can implement this ? What is the best way to do it..? Please help....

• Routing for remote gateway over VPN in Vista/7 broken?

  Hi, Situation is as follows. Home computer running Windows 7, sets up VPN connection (LT2P + IPSec, "use remote gateway" disabled) to office. Subnet is 192.168.64.x Office has Draytek Vigor 2920 router, subnet is 192.168.32.x What happens? - VPN connection itself works fine - Can ping any machine on the remote network - When trying to open a webpage from a host in the remote network, the remote server logs the incoming request, but the browser hangs on "waiting for..." and eventually times out. I have observed this problem on Windows Vista and Windows 7. On Windows XP however there is no problem like described above. The only clue I have is that there is a difference in the routing between XP and Vista/7. The output of "route print" on Windows XP looks like this: (See www.latunyi.com/routing_xp.png) So here the gateway for the 192.168.32.x subnet is the IP address that the local computer has in the remote network. The output of "route print" on Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) looks like this: (See www.latunyi.com/routing_win7.png") Now the gateway for the 192.168.32.x subnet is the IP address of the VPN router (32.1). I don't know if that causes this trouble, but it seems a bit strange. Enabling "use default gateway on remote network" doesn't make a difference. Using the new option "Disable class based route addition" in Windows 7 only makes the route to the VPN router disappear. I am really puzzled here. I assume the VPN routing can't be broken in both Vista and Windows 7, and this should just work without manually adding routes. I hope someone has a solution for this problem :-). Thanks!

  Are you sticking with your older version of Windows instead of upgrading to Windows 7?  There’s no problem with that, but here’s a quick reminder to make sure you’re running the latest service pack to stay protected. Microsoft offers security updates and more throughout the lifetime of a version of Windows, and periodically they roll all the latest updates and improvements together into a service pack.  After a while, only computers running the latest service pack will still get updates to keep them safe. Recently, Microsoft has been warning that support is ending for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and the release version of Windows Vista.  When support ends, you will not receive any new security updates for Windows.  You can continue to use your computer the same as before, but it may not be as secure and if new security issues are discovered they will not be updated. However, it’s easy to stay supported: simply install XP Service Pack 3 or Vista Service Pack 2, depending on your computer.  Here’s how to do that: Windows XP To install Windows XP Service Pack 3, you can either check Windows Update for updates, or simply download it from Microsoft at this link: Download XP Service Pack 3 Run the download (or if you’re updating from Windows Update the installer will automatically launch), and proceed just as you normally would when installing a program.  Your computer will have to reboot during the install, so make sure you’ve saved all your work and closed other programs before installing.   To check what service pack your computer is running, click Start, then right-click on the My Computer button and choose Properties. This will show you what version and service pack of Windows you are running, and in this screenshot we see this computer has be updated to Service Pack 3. Please Note:  The version of XP shipped with Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 comes preconfigured with Service Pack 3, and does not need updated.  Additionally, if your computer is running the 64 bit version of Windows XP, then Service Pack 2 is the latest service pack for your computer, and it is still supported. Windows Vista If your computer is running Windows Vista, you can install Service Pack 2 to stay up to date and supported.  Simply check Windows Update for Service Pack 2 if you haven’t installed it yet, or download the installer for your computer from the link below: 32 bit: Vista Service Pack 2 32-bit 64 bit: Vista Service Pack 2 64-bit Run the installer, and simply set it up as a normal program installation.  Do note that your computer will reboot during the installation, so make sure to save your work and close other programs before installing. To see what service pack your computer is running, click the Start orb, then right-click on the Computer button and select Properties. This will show what service pack and edition of Windows Vista your computer is running right at the top of the page.   Hi all, I'm trying to test my iPhone application on the device. I have a mac computer which stores my development environment. Right now I can only access PHP files using the http://localhost/PHPFileLocation which does not work when I try to test my app on real device. How do I configure apache2 to be accessible from outside? Is it possible to configure it to a specific IP address? I want to reach some php scripts located on my development machine running apache2 from my iPhone device. Thanks

• Pair programming tools that are not remote

  I am currently in a job where we practice serious pair programming on windows machines. We both have a set of keyboards, mice, and we have two monitors, which works well for switching who's the driver really easy, but there are some points in the session that I would like to start writing tests at the same time that my pair is writing implementation. I am wondering if there is any program that would allow me to have effectively two cursors and keyboard focuses on the same computer. If they don't exist then I am willing to experiment with my own solution, but I would like input as to how to best accomplish this. I am most familiar with .Net 3.5 technologies, but I also know Java and am willing to learn C++ to solve this problem. If I was creating the solution myself I would go down the road of being able to grab the input of one hardware device (i.e. a specific mouse that's installed) and prevent Windows from moving the pointer, and instead move my own programs pointer independently.

  Here is VDS server with ip(for example 105.123.123.123) with working apache service. And there is a desktop computer with linux on board(but really I presume there is no difference). I need to type on web browser address like someaddress.com and to see website situated at my server. My /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost 105.123.123.123 someaddress.com 105.123.123.123 www.someaddress.com But it doesn't work. I see real someaddress.com website. What can be wrong. It will be great if you help me with that. P.S. Why I need this. There is one project with fixed links(like someaddress.com/inf). And I need to test it.

The biggest one is in the chameneos-redux script right now—the Perl version runs the worst out of any language: 1,626 times slower than the C baseline solution! There are some restrictions on how the programs can be made and optimized, and there is Perl's interpreted runtime penalty, but 1,626 times? There's got to be something that can get the runtime of this program way down. Taking a look at the source code and the challenge, how can the speed be improved?

Lexical syntax of comments My question is this: What are the most important (or at least significant / funny but true / sad but true) laws of Computer Science and programming? I want named laws, and not random theorems, So an answer should look something like Surname's (law|theorem|conjecture|corollary...) Please state the law in your answer, and not only a link. • backing up a remote vps?

  i am using a vps at a hosting company. i can access it through ssh and i have set up webdav. i asked them if they backup the vps and they told me they are making a backup every day. but i wonder if i should backup my important files in my vps to my local computer of mine? cause it seems unsafe to upload all my important files and then delete them from my local machine. not knowing if they are backed up properly or not. if i should make backup, how and how often should i do it? what program could i use to do this? best practices i should know about? thanks!

  My project is a computer vision java application which should implement the following : A web interface through which the form entry+images(for example a student data) will be stored into a database(Mysql) & images into directory common to my java application. Then the data & images can be retrieved from my java Gui application and I can perform the following operations of image processing through OpenCV. Actually,I want to run the face detection on images retrieved and discard the false entries(no proper face). Also the application user/admin can search an image based on text search(By Id) or By another reference image using face recognition. I am well familiar with Java but the problem is that I need a guidance on how to organise it in a stepwise manner(links appreciated).OpenCv,Php and mySql are really messy.I know doing the openCV stuff within java is real overhead but i really want to do it.But If there is any suggestion to do it elseway please guide me.So any kind of help is a ray of hope for me.   I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?
