  • Java plugin in the browser doesn't work even though it is enabled

    I installed the Java Development Kit (64-bit) recently and saw it includes the JRE plugin for 64-bit as well. But, since Firefox is 32-bit, I also installed JRE 32-bit version. This is what is shown in Programs and Features. Now, the problem is, the other day, I opened a site which required the Java plugin. The frame showed the regular Java loading animation and hung. Nothing happened after that. Like this: I checked Firefox's plugins section and it shows Java is enabled, so no issue there I tried other browsers - IE10 and Chrome but to no avail. It doesn't work anywhere. I saw another question which said that you have to install 64-bit then 32-bit. That's what I actually did as well. First, installed JDK 7 64-bit (which includes JRE 7 64-bit) and then installed JRE 7 32-bit. I even tried the Java website's Do I have Java? section and over there too, it just keeps spinning for ages (I have waited for more than 10-20 seconds). How do I go about now? This never happened to me in Windows 7. I am on Windows 8 Pro.

  • How do I make some files on my machine accessible via HTTP using Apache?

    I did a wget on the source and built the apache binaries correctly. Now what do I need to do to get some documents accessible using HTTP (start some services?)? Also, do I need to group all the files I want to make accessible in some directory and make the directory and its contents accessible or can I just make the individual documents available? I will be providing these links to my colleagues and do not want them to be down, so need to make sure that the apache services are up automatically after a reboot. Does apache have some inbuilt support for this?

  • Weird mouse/keyboard freezups when using PowerPoint 2007 with IBM/Lenovo docking station

    I'm not sure what part of my system is responsible for this, but when using PowerPoint, I have problems when trying to resize drawing objects. I'll be dragging the handle and suddenly, the object will deselect and whatever is behind the object will select and start moving around. Next thing I know, the keyboard won't type anymore, and the only way to fix it is to unplug the USB and plug it back in. In case it's hardware related, I'm using an IMB Thinkpad T60P in a docking station. My keyboard is a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I've never noticed this happening in anything besides PowerPoint, and I don't know anyone else who has this problem (even people with similar setups). Any ideas what it could be? Edit Well, it looks like I only get the problem if I plug the mouse into my docking station's USB. If I plug directly into the laptop's USB, everything works fine. And, again, this problem is only with PowerPoint. I tried playing with some drawing objects in Word and had no issue no matter where my mouse was plugged in. I should also mention I tried a different mouse (a standard Microsoft corded mouse instead of my Logitech trackball), but that made no difference. So, I don't think it's anything specific with the trackball or the trackball's driver. I tried searching Google but came up empty, so I'm guessing this problem is something unique to my setup. If you have any thoughts or ideas to try, I'd love to hear them.

  • Sending text messages from Raspberry Pi via email fails

    I'm using mailx on my raspberry pi to try to send text messages updates for event monitoring. My phone number: 9876543210 My phone's email-to-text gateway address: [email protected] I can 1) Send emails from my raspberry pi to various email addresses. mail -r [email protected] -s "My Subject" [email protected] < body.txt and off it goes and is successfully delivered. 2) Send emails from various email address (not on RPi) using mailx to the above phone-email address and have them delivered as text messages. However, when sending emails to [email protected] from the Raspberry Pi using mailx the emails seem to spiral into the void and are never heard of again (no errors, no undeliverable messages, nothing). Does anyone know what could be causing this to go awry? Something about the basic deployment of the mail server on the pi? EDIT Based on @kobaltz's suggestion, I used sendmail instead. This led to a hang, then an error that stated that I lacked a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). I then used this website's instructions to add a domain name to the RPi. To paraphrase: I have set the FQDN in /etc/hostname: my-host-name.my-domain.com and /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.5 my-host-name.my-domain.com my-host-name Then add to /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: MASQUERADE_AS(`my-domain.com') MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`my-host-name.my-domain.com') FEATURE(`masquerade_entire_domain') FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope') I put this in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf, BEFORE the MAILER() lines, ran sendmailconfig, answered Yes to the questions about using the existing files, and restarted sendmail. Emails now have the proper domain name. Progress, however, I am now stuck at the following error: 354 Enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself >>> . 050 <[email protected]>...   • Preventing Windows version of Vim from destroying other file systems permissions

    I am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin. The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it. A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive. Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions? Edit: This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.

  • Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard EFI 1.8 downgrade

    Question: Does anyone know of an EFI downgrade for user on 1.8? I have found a 1.7 to 1.6 downgrade, but once on 1.8 this downgrade no longer works. Background: After upgrading to Snow Leopard, and installing the EFI 1.8 update (as recommended by Software Update), I have lost the ability to burn discs. This also includes when using external burners and when booting into Vista using Bootcamp. Other seemingly related problems to the EFI I have are, chronic overheating, random temporary beachball lockups, longer boot times. These 'other' problems have been solved for other users who experienced these problems on EFI 1.7, but were able to rollback to 1.6. I am looking for a solution that does not require sending my computer back to Apple.

  • Setting up a wireless network with Verizon MiFi

    I am trying to set up a home network. I live in a location without cable internet so I have a Verizon MiFi card. I have a few laptops at the moment and they each connect through the card but I want to set up an Ubuntu 10.10 server and see if I can use it for DHCP. I have a Trendnet TEG-S50G switch and the computer I plan to use for the server has a Linksys WMP-11 Wireless PCI card. Is there any other equipment I need in order to get this to work? Is this even doable? Is there a better way to make this happen?

    I installed Fedora 12 with XFCE. When I run Gigolo to mount Windows partitions, I get an "Authentication is required" message. In Fedora 11 XFCE, there was a tool that changed the system permission to allow any user to mount any partition, but I can't find it in Fedora 12. How can I fix this problem and set all permissions needed?

    Here's what i'm wanting to do. I have a Acer Iconia A500 tablet. I want to plug it in, in the car, but it has a barrel plug and I don't want to buy an inverter. The car adapters are expensive for what they do. But since it's just a cable... wasn't sure if that really made a whole lot of difference since it's only 1.5 amps from the wall charger. Is it possible to use that usb cable through the powerbolt car charger, to charge the A500?

  • Server and Network Lag

    At my home I have a server and my computer. Server has Windows Server 2008 Standart 64 bit installed and then my computer has Windows 7 64 bit installed. My home router is DIR-615 My server has a game server installed on it and basically total open connections on server are around 700. Once its around 700 server and then whole home network lags really badly. My internet connection is good and only around 600kb/s is being used out of 2mb/s (real download/upload speeds). So far I assume that my router has a connection limit and with server + my computer connections it peaks at around 1k and lags everything. Another assumption server lag comes from connection limit. On the internet I have read that standart version of server has connection limit of 700 + 10 reserved. I do not rmember where I found that information but it was on microsoft website. So I have two options. First is to upgrade my router to Netgear FVS318G-100 and second is to change connections limit on server. Any advices? Thank you

  • Why can't I wrap text around grouped images in Word?

    When I paste two images into Microsoft Word and I set Wrap Text to Square and then group them so they stick nicely together, I can no longer Wrap Text around this newly grouped image. Any explanation to why text wrapping is disabled for grouped images? Note: if I don't change the Wrap Text option, I can't group them. This is for Word 2010 on Windows 7, but I've had this problem with every version of Word.

    Hi, I am running FC9 under VMware Fusion 3.0 I wanted to resize my /dev/sda2 partition. In order to do that I did the following: 0. changed the size of the vmware file (under VMware settings). 1. rebooted the host to rescue mode without mounted disks 2. fdisk - removed & added /dev/sda2 - i had bigger /dev/sda2 3. lvm pvresize /dev/sda2 4. lvm pvdisplay - it showed me bigger size on /dev/VolGroup00 for /dev/sda2 5. lvm vgchange -a y - device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument - 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active This is not true because there is no /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 My whole "/" disappeared. dmsetup table, shows: VolGroup00-LogVol01: 0 2097152 linear 8:2 38338944 VolGroup00-LogVol00: Can some one help me to solve this? The printer OEM does not have a specific driver for Windows 7, they say to use the Windows 7 driver. I can install the printer as a local printer to the laptop. It does find the driver on the laptop, but I can't install it from the shared desktop.

  • Triple boot WIndows 7, Windows 8, and Mountain Lion on Macbook Pro

    Ok, So I have a bit of a unique situation here I could use some help on. I've modded my summer 2011 MBPro to have 2 harddrives by replacing the optical drive. OSX Mountain Lion is installed on a single partition of a 120GB SSD. The second drive is 750GB, partitioned as 550GB, 150GB, and ~50GB. I've set the 550GB to act as my OSX homefolder, but I'd like to install windows 7 and Windows 8 on the remaining partitions. It Took a while, but by following this guide, I eventually found a way to install Windows without a CD/DVD drive by following this http://huguesval.com/blog/2012/02/installing-windows-7-on-a-mac-without-superdrive-with-virtualbox/ It worked flawlessly for creating both windows 7 and windows 8 images that I could clone onto FAT32 partitions. However, I have encountered a problem when trying to triple boot. After I put Windows 8 onto the ~50GB partition and tried to boot into windows 7 I get an error that says something like: error: 0x0000000e The Boot selection failed because the required device is inaccessible. If I re-clone the windows 7 image onto the drive and select the option to "replace BCD" file for the drive, windows 7 will boot but windows 8 now gives me the same exact error. I realize this is a pretty extensive setup, but if anyone has some insight I'd love to hear it.

    Virtual Win XP Mode stopped HP LJ Pro M1212nf MFP printing in Win 7 Pro: I am running Windows 7 Pro with Virtual Windows XP Mode. My printer is HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP attached directly to a USB port of the computer. This printer was working fine in Windows 7, until I tried to attach the printer to the Virtual Windows XP Mode in order to load the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode. At that point, the printer disappeared from the list of USB devices on the toolbar at the top of the window of the Virtual Windows XP Mode. After installing the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer did not work in that mode and also no longer worked in Windows 7. In Windows 7 and in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, print files are sent to the print queue, but are never printed. In Windows 7, the print queue states that the printer is offline. In the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer can be toggled from "Print Offline" to "Print Online", but no print files are ever printed from the print queue. The printer acts as though it is no longer connected to the computer, even though it is still physically connected to the USB port of the computer. How can I get the printer to work again in Windows 7? (At this point, I am no longer interested in using the Virtual Windows XP Mode.) I have tried a large number of things to find and fix the printer problem, but have had no success. Device Manager cannot see the printer even though it is physically connected via USB port (have tried different USB ports) to the computer. Restoring Win 7 and Virtual Win XP Mode to times before the problem does not fix the problem. How can I get the computer to see the printer, so that I can print again in Win 7?
