• LDAP System Authentication in Ubuntu

  Hi, I'm having a bit of an issue with system authentication against LDAP in Ubuntu. The LDAP server is OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.10, and the client is Ubuntu 10.10 also. I've set up the client by following the "LDAP Authentication" steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html apt-get install libnss-ldap; auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap; pam-auth-update I've done these steps on the server and been able to see LDAP users when running getent passwd. Doing the same steps on the client, getent passwd does not return any LDAP users. Any ideas?

• Backup with Mercurial and Robocopy?

  The Problem We would like to backup our critical files from several network shares to a removable hard drive. We want to automate the backup so we don't have to remember to run it. It needs to finish overnight. Furthermore, we want to be able to preserve multiple versions of each file so we can back out of our user's mistakes easier. Background Information I work in a large Windows-based enterprise with a centralized IT section who is responsible for all backups. Their backups are geared towards disaster recovery and not user error, and require upper-level management approval for any non-disaster recoveries. Several times we have noticed that our backups have failed, we weren't notified. I do not have administrative rights to the server or my desktop. We are trying to backup some 198,000 files spanning about 240 gigabytes. These files rarely change. Our backup drive is one terabyte. My Proposed Solution What I would like to do is to write a batch file using Robocopy with the /mir option along with Mercurial SCM to store all versions of the file. I would do an hg add followed by an hg commit before each execution of Robocopy to save the current state, and then make a mirrored copy of the file structures. The problem is the /mir will delete every folder not present in the source, and Mercurial stores the repository in a .hg folder in the destination folder. Does anybody know how I could either convince Mercurial to store the .hg folder elsewhere, or convince Robocopy not to delete it from the destination? I'm trying to avoid writing a custom program do to copying.

I have a huge file (serveral gigabyes) partially copied to a network drive, and it took a long time, and it was mostly done before the copy operation stopped due to a network problem that is now fixed. How do I resume the file copy. I don't want an inefficient script, and ecp didn't work (it doesn't seem to work for large files).

• Linux: find thin server running on port 80 and kill it

  On my Linux server I ran: sudo thin start -p 80 -d Now I'd like to restart the sever. The trouble is, I can't seem to get the old process to kill it. I tried: netstat -anp But what I see on port 80 is this: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - So, it didn't give me a PID to kill... I tried pgrep -l thin but that gave me nothing. Meanwhile pgrep -l ruby gives me like 6 processes running. I don't really understand why multiple ruby threads would be running, or which one I need to kill... How do I kill / restart the thin daemon?

• Compiling PHP with LDAP support on Ubuntu 12.10

  I am trying to compile PHP on Ubuntu 12.10 with LDAP support. I have run: apt-get install libldap2-dev That installs the header files to /usr/include. However, when attempting to compile it is unable to locate the header files. I have tried to with --with-ldap=/usr/include as well and it still fails with: configure: error: Cannot find ldap.h I also tried symlinking with the following and I still get the same error: ln -s /usr/lib/ldap* /usr/lib/ Thanks in advance for your help.

• Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• getting input/output error from NFS client on RHEL5

  i have two RHEL5 boxes on a private network together (192.168.2.0/24) and I am trying to export a file system from one to the other but I keep getting the following error: mount.nfs: Input/output error on the client side I see this output: mount: trying 192.168.2.101 prog 100003 vers 3 prot tcp port 2049 mount: trying 192.168.2.101 prog 100005 vers 3 prot tcp port 960 and on the server side I see this: Sep 20 14:14:32 omicron mountd[18739]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.2.87:635 for /srv/nfs/web (/srv/nfs/web) but that's all. I opened up iptables so that the whole 192.168.2.0/24 network is allowed to communicate freely but the public side is locked down to 22,80 etc.... any ideas?

• Java applet class never found

  I am having a problem with the java plugins of all three major browsers: chromium, firefox and Internet Explorer. The issue is that applets will always fail to load and yield errors no matter what website or what applet I am trying to use. I can not see any of the example applets on oracle's website; I can not launch the minecraft browser applet; nor can I launch any applet across the web using any browser. I always receive a "class not found:AppletClassHere.class" error. I know that my browser plugin must be working correctly because I can launch the Cisco Nac applet each time I connect to my network and I can launch my own simple applets offline. I am connecting to the internet through a vpn in case that is important. It also seems like a lot of other people I know are having this issue. Re-installing the plugin does not appear to fix the issue. I am asking this question to find out the cause of this problem, and any possible solutions. Thank you.

• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, the virtual terminals are not accessible, ie, c+a+F1 etc does nothing, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console by booting off the installation cd, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! Additional Details on my blog and my first attempt at asking for help Update: I can reasonably say it is not a hardware fault, as a full install of 9.10 with dual screen nvidia xinemara indicate that nothing is wonky

Is there any way I can accomplish automatic text file splitting? My eventual, actual input entry.txt actually contains 200,001 entries. Doing the text split in either Windows or Linux would be great.   OpenCandy claims that using the /NOCANDY switch when using a OpenCandy-affiliated installer allows you to avoid opencandy. Should I take their word for it? If not, can anyone independent of OpenCandy and their affiliates verify that /NOCANDY works? Background: About to install WinSCP onto a fresh Windows installation, and found out that new versions have OpenCandy associated with their installer. For the sake of balance, here's a link to WinSCP's FAQ on OpenCandy. The claim about /NOCANDY working appears on WinSCP's web site, but the same boilerplate appears on other OpenCandy web sites. If the OpenCandy people are offended by the tag "spyare": sorry, but it's the main tag here, rather than "adware".

• MySQL Master-Master replication generating thousands of log files

  Today, I checked the /var/lib/mysql/ directory of a server in a master-master replication setup and noticed there were about 3,600 slave-relay.00xxxx files in there (where "xxxx" is an incrementing integer). They appear to be binary log files and don't take up much space (only about 42K), but are they an indication that something is wrong? They range in date from August until today with about 25 per day. • Win7 - Some pinned program's icons are corrupt, show default

  I have both FF 3.6 & Chrome pinned to my taskbar in win7. The icons for these two programs show up as the ugly default icon from yesteryear. Strange. Is there some way to force an icon refresh for pinned programs? When I first added them they showed properly, but several days later they reverted to this state Un-pinning the program causes the icon to show up properly, and re-pinning it causes it to break again. These other proggies show up fine: Media Center, Media Player Classic HC, Hulu Desktop, WMP, and the folders. I have 2 user accounts on this box, and both are showing this behavior. I have tried changing the taskbar icon size to 'small' and back, but to no effect. Edit (Add) The icons show up as broken in the start menu too, but I can navigate to the EXE directly. When I click "change icon" in the properties for the start menu entry I get the error : Can not find %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome...\chrome.exe.

• Copying files within a Workgroup

  I have three boxes operating in a Windows Server workgroup within a closed network. (No Domain / No AD) There are several derivations of the scenario that I'm about to outline, but I'm sure I will be able to retool the solution as and when I need. Essentially the boxes are: 2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard 1 x Windows Server 2000 Standard I need to be able to schedule the copying/and-or/moving of files from various directories and each of the boxes. Each box has a different username and password for the administrator. I have PowerShell 2.0 on the two Win2K8 boxes (obviously). Previously I have used mapped network drives to copy the files, and cmd line batches, but I'd much rather use Powershell if possible (with Shares and/or $ notation). However the Copy-Item cmdlet doesn't seem to be processing the Credential correctly. Perhaps some Powershell gurus out there might be able to help me. Essentially I'd like to schedule a PS run of script to push backup files onto my WIn2k box (old fileserver) periodically.

• What are "Excess Fragments" in defragmenting a hard drive?

  I'm defragmenting my hard drive (XP SP3) with PerfectDisk 7.0, and it finds 816,659 excess fragments when I ask for an analysis. [update] Specifically, it shows that the 1TB disk is 14% fragmented with 19693 fragments and 816,659 excess fragments. About 20% of the disk is still free space. What does excess fragments refer to? What is the difference between fragments and excess fragments? I have had problems in the past where I defragmented a fragmented disk and many files were corrupted. It seemed as though "excess fragments" referred to orphan pieces, where the program couldn't find out where to put them. If that was true, then defragmenting a disk resulted in many incomplete files, and in fact I defragmented a disk full of MP3's and got a lot of corrupted files as a result. Instead, I started to simply format a separate disk and copy everything from one to the other. That way there were no orphan bits, and no file corruption. Does anybody know what "excess fragments" really are?

  I am thinking about the way of establishing some-sort of real-time connection between MySQLpowered shopping cart and internal system that is running on PostgreSQL. Could you give me some sort of insight on this topic? For example, I can write some sort of csv export application, then enable remote MySQL for over the internet connection and then import csv to mysql directly from PC. Or upload csv and run cron on server. But this way of import-export causing delays; so I would like to link databased (or some msort). I have never done it before and would like to hear some opinions about this. Another way "just a thought" might to implement triggers that would initiate the update process via csv; but again, I would like to avoid csv. Do you have any good advise? Maybe some specific examples?

  I am trying to SSH from a NAS to a webserver using a public key. • Compiling Gearman PHP Library for CentOS 5.8

  I've been trying to get Gearman compiled on CentOS 5.8 all afternoon. Unfortunately I am restricted to this version of CentOS by my CTO and how he has our entire network configured. I think it's simply because we don't have enough resources to upgrade our network... But anyways, the problem at hand. I have searched through Server Fault, Stack Overflow, Google, and am unable to locate a working solution. What I have below is stuff I have pieced together from my searching. Searches have told said to install the following via yum: yum -y install --enablerepo=remi boost141-devel libgearman-devel e2fsprogs-devel e2fsprogs gcc44 gcc-c++ To get the Boost headers working correctly I did this: cp -f /usr/lib/boost141/* /usr/lib/ cp -f /usr/lib64/boost141/* /usr/lib64/ rm -f /usr/include/boost ln -s /usr/include/boost141/boost /usr/include/boost With all of the dependancies installed and paths setup I then download and compile gearmand-1.1.2 just fine. wget -O /tmp/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz https://launchpad.net/gearmand/1.2/1.1.2/+download/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz cd /tmp && tar zxvf gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz ./configure && make -j8 && make install That works correctly. So now I need to install the Gearman library for PHP. I have attempted through PECL and downloading the source directly, both result in the same error: checking whether to enable gearman support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libgearman What I don't understand is I installed the libgearman-devel package which also installed the core libgearman. The installation installs libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.i386, libgearman-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, and libgearman-0.14-3.el5.i386. Is it possible the package version is lower than what is required? I'm still poking around with this, but figured I'd throw this up to see if anyone has a solution while I continue to research a fix.   I have a cluster resource of type "file share" but when I try to configure the "security" parameter I get the following error (excerpt): Set-ClusterParameter : Parameter 'security' does not exist on the cluster object Using cluster.exe I get a better result, namely the usual nothing when the command worked. But when I check in Failover Cluster Manager the permissions have not changed. In Server 2003 the cluster.exe method worked. Any ideas? Update: Entire command and error.
