• Will adding q&a help my site's rankings, and if so, what are the implications of a sub-domain for q&a rather than a path on the site? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory One of our web properties is doing quite well without any additional links being created on the site, and our link inventory is tightly managed - no user-generated links. To introduce a community aspect to the site, we want to implement a q&a forum. Once in place, new links will populate our link inventory with keywords that are not necessarily targeted to the site. With the q&a on a sub-domain, would that not affect the main site's rankings? What's the best approach for this?

  I am a java/ruby developer from the last 3yrs, trying my hands on JS now. I am fascinated by the awesome UI designs these days. Any app I make, the worst aspect is the UI and I suck at it. I end up copying a design and with a crappy one. I am a student in San Jose, CA, and will be working from next month on Java most probably. My questions are: Are there any good courses (in the the colleges in silicon valley) on web Design (Photoshop), html, css, JS? Is it worth it?

• Alternative to "inheritance versus composition?" [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Where does this concept of “favor composition over inheritance” come from? I have colleagues at work who claim that "Inheritance is an anti-pattern" and want to use composition systematically instead, except in (rare, according to them) cases where inheritance is really the best way to go. I want to suggest an alternative where we continue using inheritance, but it is strictly forbidden (enforced by code reviews) to use anything but public members of base classes in derived classes. For a case where we don't need to swap components of a class at runtime (static inheritance), would that be equivalent enough to composition? Or am I forgetting some other important aspect of composition?

• SSIS 2008 Configuration Settings Handling Logic for Variables Visualized

  There are many articles discussing the specifics of how the configuration settings are applied including the differences between SSIS 2005 and 2008 version implementations, however this topic keeps resurfacing on MSDN’s SSIS Forum. I thought it could be useful to cover the logic aspect visually. Below is a diagram explaining the basic flow of a variable setting for a case when no parent package is involved.   As you can see the run time stage ignores any command line flags for variables already set in the config file, I realize this is not stressed enough in many publications. Besides, another interesting fact is that the command line dtexec tool is case sensitive for the portion following the package keyword, I mean if you specify your flag to set a new value for a variable like dtexec /f Package.dtsx -set \package.variables[varPkgMyDate].value;02/01/2011 (notice the lover case v in .value) You will get errors. By capitalizing the keyword the package runs successfully.

• Which mobile device is appropriate as a utility tool for a web master?

  Basically, I'm looking for a device to use on the road and I would prefer to not have to sit down for the majority of the tasks (which rules out netbooks, in my mind). I'm also hoping to spend less than $500. This is what I'd like to "capably" be able to do on the device: Browse the web in non-mobile format, flash is a plus Email, chat, etc Have access to a decent text editor and ftp OR a browser that supports BESPIN/ACE Some sort of SSH support I'm looking at rooted Android phones and iPhone/iPads... though the phone aspect is only icing (it would be cool to consolidate the two devices and have net access through cell networks, but I'm not married to the idea). Are there cheap linux tablets that are ready for prime-time yet? I suppose that would be ideal. All suggestions welcome!

  Hi, I've learned javascript at school but since I'm working with it and study about it every day, I've found very particular aspect of javascript that I didn't know about. Which at first, was very hard to understand for me and finally, I found it very usefull and easy to implement. And in the final, it gives to my code some kind of "beauty". • Advice on how to understand in general and in practice IT Infrastructure

  My IT knowledge resides mainly in SW development. I have just some basic know how about networks. On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope). • Recommended flexible website solution?

  My site has a MyBB forums installation, and that is pretty much all I need. Forums. However, I need a homepage and a couple other static pages, for showing relevant information, links, etc. I don't need something fancy, all I need is something very flexible regarding theme and style editing, and just a couple simple modules, like public polls. That's all. I am very graphical, and I am looking for something to let me edit pretty much every aspect of the site. These are static pages, mainly, so I don't need something very complex. Some people tell me to use Dreamweaver, but quite honestly, that is not what I am looking for, even thought it does offer a lot of flexibility. I want something like, you know, Drupal or.. some other simple, deeply-editable in terms of graphics and style web platform. What would you recommend to me? Thank you.

• What to learn for a pure practical developer to get better?

  I'm a self taught developer that currently has more than enough experience to hold up against my colleagues waving with their degrees, yet I feel that I'm lacking some important skills to advance further into being a senior level professional in a leading role. More specific in the engineering, planning and designing aspect of software. I've touched the surface of UML, ERM/ERD, have experienced both waterfall and scrum projectmanagement, ... yet I feel there is something missing as every time I start on a new project I don't know where to begin. Should I start diagramming and how? should I start writing an xx page document describing the project on a technical level first, should I dive head first into writing the first tests and code or pseudo-code? I would like to know what, in my case, would be the best way forward, to learn how I can tackle this problem in the future and get better at leading and starting a project. There is not much i don't know about my technical tools and languages but when it gets abstract i'm in trouble.

• Why are most websites optimized for viewing in portrait mode?

  I simply cannot figure this out. Almost all monitors have an aspect ratio where width is much bigger than the height and yet almost all websites are designed exactly for the other way round? I am not really a web developer and am just experimenting stuff at the moment but this madness baffles me!!! Edit: The point is not that I would like to limit the height of a website. I found that I must write -pass n command some where, but where to write it I do not know. I tested this and wrote -pass 3 at the end but then the terminal just showed a > symbol.

• Is C++ indispensible for AAA game engines, as long as we have console-platform games? [closed]

  C++ has remained the industry standard for game engines much because of its features.. The primary reasons are(afaik): Technical reasons - High performance, native runtime, portibility, negligible latency, and more recently concurrency. Socio-Technical reasons - Availability of Libraries, Legecy stuff, most scripting languages on games have a good C api (ex lua), Good IDEs and most recently improved Development time.(C++11) Social reasons - People know C++, Licenced technologies, and battle proven. Does this make C++ for game engines indispensible, so long we have game consoles? Would not, the above features make me implement new graphics technology in C++ only? Edit: Will learning C++ garuntee me a job as a game engine dev In the future? I want to master every aspect of the language, but I already know C# and python. Should I allocate my time learning C++.   I have made some research and found that bullet, ode, newton and some others are open source physics engines that should be portable enough (but I have never tried to comile/use anyone of them on phones). I am writing my games for mobile platforms in C++, so the engine should be C or C++. I need a fast engine, since mobile platforms have limited resources. I need a free engine. A good design would be nice to have too. What engine is best suited for my task? What I really would like to hear from you is your direct experience.   I am looking for an expert programmer to help solve a difficult situation. The interviews so far have been surprisingly disappointing. The best candidate so far is a very experienced programmer who has never used version control software. The problem in itself might not be too serious because it is something which can be learned in a short time. But there is a deeper aspect, which worries me: How is it possible to actively develop software for 10-15 years without ever needing version control? Is the fact itself of not looking for a solution to the problem of tracking changes a sign of a wrong attitude to programming?

• Unity3D 3.5 pro - Moving the camera vs setting draw distance

  I move the camera mostly via right-click + WASD, sometimes with [shift] if I want it to move faster. Occasionally, instead of moving my camera, it alters the draw distance / FOV / some visual aspect of the editing scene that causes trees and other object to disappear when I scroll enough, and eventually even the terrain starts disappearing. It is not m "zooming out". My camera does not move, the width and height of the FOV stays the same (one might say the depth is being altered though). What key am I hitting to cause this to happen, and is it possible to disable it? side note: "keybinds" is probably the most spot-on tag for this question but it doesn't exist (surprisingly) and I lack the rep to create it.

What can be algorithm to layout the colors on the board in the form of rectangles in the most pleasing form. • Looking for parallel programming problem

  I am trying to come up with a problem that is easily solvable in a parallel manner and that requires communication between threads for a test. I also am trying to avoid problems that require require random waits, which rules out dining philosophers and producer-consumer (bounded buffer), two of the classics. My goal is for the student to be able to write the program in less than 20-30 minutes in front of a computer not knowing of the problem beforehand. (This is to prevent preparation more than to come up with something novel.) I am trying to stress the communication aspect of the program, though the multi-threaded nature is also important. Does anyone have some ideas? Edit: I'm using Google Go for the language and testing comprehension of the goroutines/channels combo vs an actors library that I authored.

• Getting Started with Component Architecture: DI?

  I just moved away from MVC towards something more component-architecture-like. I have no concept of messages yet (it's rough prototype code), objects just get internal properties and values of other classes for now. That issue aside, it seems like this is turning into an aspect-oriented-programming challenge. I've noticed that all entities with, for example, a position component will have similar properties (get/set X/Y/Z, rotation, velocity). Is it a common practice, and/or good idea, to push these behind an interface and use dependency injection to inject a generic class (eg. PositionComponent) which already has all the boiler-plate code? (I'm sure the answer will affect the model I use for message/passing)
