  • What is your strategy for converting RC builds into retail?

    We're trying to implement a strategy for how we transition our builds from RC to released retail code. When we label a build as a release candidate, we send it to QA for regression. If they approve it, that RC then becomes our released retail code. I liked the idea of "obvious" labeling of versions so that a user knows whether they have a beta or an RC or retail code... where you would have some obvious watermark in non-retail code (think Windows 7 where the RC or non-genuine builds watermark in the bottom right). ... but it seemed strange to us to manipulate the project (to remove the watermark) once it passed regression. If QA certified version a.b.c.d then our retail code should be that same version, not a.b.c.d+1 what strategies have you employed to clearly label non-release software versions without incrementing your build to disable the watermarks in your retail code? One idea I've considered is writing your build to look for a signed file in the installer archive... non-release code wouldn't include this file and so the app would know to display a watermark. But even this seems like QA is then working with non-release code. Ideas?

  • Integration tests in Continuous Integration environment: Database and filesystem state

    I'm trying to implement automated integration tests for my application. It's a very complex monster. You could say that its database and part of the filesystem are part of its state, because it saves image files in the hard drive, and references to those in the DB. The software needs all those, in a coherent state, to work properly. Back to writing tests: To run any relevant test, I need some image files in the filesystem, and certain records filled in the database. I thought of putting all of these in a separate folder called TestEnvironmentData in the repository, and retrieving them from the Continuous Integration Server (Team City), but a colleague said the repo is quite full as it is, and that I should set up a special directory, and databases, only in the Continuous Integration server. I don't like that because the tests success depend on me manually mantaining stuff in the server, and restoring initial state before every test becomes cumbersome. What do you guys do when you need to write integration tests for an app like this? The main goal is having an automated test harness to approach a large scale refactoring. There's lots of spaghetti code and the app's current architecture is hardly unit testable, that's why I decided on integration tests first. Any alternative approach is welcome.

Problem: As a beginner developer I, unfortunately, have no idea how software testing works, not even how to test a simple function. This is a shame, but thats the truth.   • Should I stick only to AWS RDS Automated Backup or DB Snapshots?

    I am using AWS RDS for MySQL. With it comes on backup, I understand that amazon provides two types of backup - automated backup and database (DB) snapshot. The difference is explain in here - http://aws.amazon.com/rds/faqs/#23. However, I am still confuse if should I stick to automated backup only or both automated and manual (db snapshots). What do you think guys? What's the setup of your own? I heard to others that automated backup is not reliable due to some unrecoverable database when the DB instance is crashed so the DB snapshots are the way to rescue you. If I will do daily DB snapshots as similar settings to automated backup, I have gonna pay much bunch of bucks. Hope anyone could enlighten me or advise me the right set up. Thanks. James

  • Mulltiple configurations in Qt

    Hi all! I'm new to Qt Creator and I have several questions regarding multiple build configurations. A side note: I have the QtCreator 1.3.1 installed on my Linux machine. I need to have two configurations in my Qt Creator project. The thing is that these aren't simply debug and release but are based on the target architecture - x86 or x64. I came across http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2259192/building-multiple-targets-in-qt-qmake and from that I went trying something like: Conf_x86 { TARGET = MyApp_x86 } Conf_x64 { TARGET = MyApp_x64 } This way however I don't seems to be able to use the Qt Creator IDE to build each of these separately (Build All, Rebuild All, etc. options from the IDE menu). Is there a way to achieve this - may be even show Conf_x86 and Conf_x64 as new build configurations in Qt Creator? One other thing the Qt I have is 64 bit so by default the target built using Qt Creator IDE will also be 64 bit. I noticed that the effective qmake call in the build step includes the following option '-spec linux-g++-64'. I also noticed that should I add '-spec linux-g++-32' in 'Additional arguments' it would override '-spec linux-g++-64' and the resulting target will be 32 bit. How can I achieve this by simply editing the contents of the .pro file? I saw that all these changes are initially saved in the .pro.user file but does doesn't suit me at all. I need to be able to make these configurations from the .pro file if possible. Any help will be appreciated. 10x in advance!

I had WebAii from ArtOfTest on my list to look at, but it looks like it's been killed off by Telerik and now they're asking $1500 for their new WebUI test studio. I can't find anything definitive on Telerik's site, too much marketing. But, it seems to be pretty clear.

    i m trying to automatically install UBUNTU on a client PC by using the method of PXE BOOT method....my Objectives are below:- i m following the steps given in this link installation using PXE BOOT INSTALL 1:-the server will have a KICKSTART config file which contains the parameters for the OS installation and the files which are required for the OS installations. 2:-the client will have to detect this configuration along with the setup files and complete the installation without any input from the user. In my server i have installed DHCP3-server,Apache2 and TFTP for helping me with the installation. i have nearly achieved my first objective,i m able to boot my client using the files stored in the server,but during the installation stage it is asking me to "CHOOSE A MIRROR of UBUNTU ARCHIVE".i gave the server's IP address and the path in the server where the files are located but then too its giving me error "BAD ARCHIVE MIRROR". so is it possible that instead of downloading all the files from the internet and storing them on my disk , can i use the files which comes with the UBUNTU-CD, and how to store this files in what format (should i zip them ) on the disk. secondly i am also generating the ks.cfg which i wanted to give to the client for automatic installation of the OS ,so how should the configuration file be given to the installation process.

An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What is the correct boot parameters for launching such an installation? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct.

    I'm currently trying to set up an unattended installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) through preseeding. But whenever I try to create a custom partition scheme, the Debian installer (which Ubuntu is using) produces a faulty partition table.     I'm trying to make a custom Ubuntu Server iso file. Kickstart file (ks.cfg) runs smooth when there is no %post in the file and Ubuntu installs correctly with ks configuration. Installation finishes installing base, apt, grub and It echos: Kickseed Running... and it freezes @ 0% I thought may be apt-get update doesnt work in ks file, I tried to install other apps like apache2 but no luck I have created dozen iso images and installed them in Virtual Box.I have been googling for 3 days and checked out ubuntu forums but haven't figured out the issue.   • To clone or to automate a system installation?

    Let's say you're setting up a cluster of servers performing the same task. Or say you're just setting up a bunch of different servers, but you expect to use a base configuration on all of your servers. Would it be better practice to create a base image and clone it, or to automate the installation and configuration? I occasionally end up in this argument with my boss, in situations where we're time-pressed. When he sees me struggle with perfecting the automation, his suggestion is often to clone the entire disk to the other machines. But my instinct has always been to avoid cloning. This is mostly from an Ubuntu perspective, but the question is fairly general. My reasons for avoiding cloning are: On a typical install, even if it's fresh, there are already several unique identifiers installed: filesystem UUIDs, SSH host keys, among others. These would have to be regenerated. Network needs to be reconfigured for each clone. This would need to be done off-line, of course, or the settings will conflict with other machines on the network. On the other hand, some of the cloning advantages are quite clear as well: (Initially?) less effort required than automating configuration. Tools exist to quickly address (some) of the above disadvantages. (I can see right through my own bias there.)

  • On Windows how can I prevent login until a software package has been installed?

    I have an MSI which is configured for machine level installation because it is a device driver. I can deploy it via Active Directory and Group Policy just fine. However on a newly booted machine a user can login before the installation has a chance to complete and I get an warning in the event log saying it couldn't complete and will be tried at next reboot. How can I make the login screen wait for the installation to be completed?

  • "cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream" error when unpacking flash archive on solaris 10

    I've searched around but i'm having no luck with some peculiar behavior with a flash archive. I'm using HP Server Automation 9.14 to deploy the OS. I'm creating a Solaris 10 flash archive to create a snapshot default build in our environment. I create the flash archive with # flar create -c -S -n g8-solaris10-u10 g8-solaris10-u10.flar It seems to create the file without any problems (exit status 0). When deploying to a new system (same hardware), it extracts to a point and then bails. The last error in the log I can see is Extracted 2047.00 MB ( 82% of 2488.98 MB archive) ERROR: Could not read file (172.27.118.100:/media/opsware/sunos/flar/g8-solaris10-u10.flar ERROR: Errors occurred during the extraction of flash archive. The file /tmp/flash_errors contains the list of errors encountered ERROR: Could not extract Flash archive ERROR: Flash installation failed The error log contained the following message cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream A previous version of this flash archive (1.8gb) worked ok, so I suspect size may be a factor. The source system (the one the flash archive is an image of) is an HP BL460C GEN8 some more info below.   • WMIC returns error when querying product

    I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server. Running the following command gives errors: command promptwmic then inside the tool /trace:on product get name This returns a long string of successes and one failure: FAIL: IEnumWbemClassObject->Next(WBEM_INFINITE, 1, -, -) Line: 396 File: d:\nt\admin\wmi\wbem\tools\wmic\execengine.cpp Node - ENTECHORELDEV ERROR: Code = 0x80041010 Description = The specified class is not valid.     I'm trying to build a shell script to automate the installation of several packages onto an Ubuntu 10.04 server, and I'm having problems with proftpd-basic. I'm using the command line apt-get -qy install proftpd-basic >/tmp/install.log For most packages, this approach would work fine, however proftpd-basic appears to require some interaction (it asks whether to perform an inetd or standalone installation). Is it possible for me to pre-select this option on the command line somehow, as I don't want the user to be bothered by this question? - For info, if it matters, I want to choose the 'standalone' option.

  • Autoinstall of Microsoft Security Essentials give random error message

    I'm using wpkg to auto install Microsoft security essentials on WinXP. At the first login after the installer finishes I get an error message as msseces.exe starts. After a reboot the message goes away. The error message indicates a random access restriction. "An error has occured in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft Download Center. Error code: 0x80070005" Firstly: Does anyone know why I get this error message? Second: How do I debug this kind of problems? The event log doesn't seem to contain anything useful. Is there a tool to detect and list denied system calls?
