  • How do I strip local symbols from linux kernel module without breaking it?

    If I do --strip-debug or --strip-unneeded, I have the .ko that lists all function names with nm, if I do just strip foo.ko I have a kernel module that refuses to load. Does anyone know a quick shortcut how to remove all symbols that are not needed for module loading so that people cannot reverse engineer the API:s as easily? PS: For all you open source bigots; this is something that general public will never be using in any case so no need to turn the question into a GPL flame war.

  • Xcode 3.2.2 and localization of Settings.bundle

    I have just discovered that after upgrading to the latest Xcode 3.2.2, I am not able anymore to localize Settings.bundle. The "Make File Localizable button always appears grayed out, and the Settings.bundle files appear with "No Explicit File Encoding", instead of UTF-16. This happens not just for my old projects, it happens even for new projects. Any clue? Is the localization procedure changed? Thank you in advance.

    How can I have a localized default values in the Settings bundle? I encounter this problem for regionally sensitive defaults. Consider an option in the settings bundle to indicate whether to show distances in miles or kilometers. The default settings for en_US and en_GB is 'miles, and km for everywhere else. Does the SDK provide a settings for that? Or should I just add a third option: 'Infer metric system, miles, kms'

  • Snow Leopard doesn't repair permissions, despite showing / saying its fixed them?

    Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?   • Gentoo baselayout-2 problem with module parameters

    I recently switched to baselayout-2 on my Gentoo machine but I have one problem. I autoload a module bttv with paramater: card=77,77 The problem is that at boot the module is loaded without the parameter which makes the video feed useless. I cannot find the cause because the funny thing is that when I put an echo in /etc/init.d/modules to see what is passed to modprobe, this is what I got: szymanowicz ~ # /etc/init.d/modules restart * WARNING: you are stopping a boot service * Caching service dependencies ... When I install the guest additions, the below error is shown in the console. Before running the command I mapped the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in the Guest. The closest I could get is this article which says to install the latest version of VirtualBox (not the one from the repository).   • How to ensure nvidia_current module loads during boot

    I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on an Asus G75V laptop with nvidia gforce GTX 660M. I first run 12.04 on this machine and was able to install nvidia_current drivers from swat ppa: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current This worked in 12.04 and after rebooting the machine my graphics where working properly. After upgrade to 12.10 however, the machine boots into a low resolution desktop which I can not really interact with. I suspect this is due to the driver not being loaded properly. To fix this, I have to switch to ctrl+alt+F1 session and manually load the nvidia_current module and restart the desktop manager: sudo modprobe nvidia_current sudo service lightdm restart Now everything works fine again. However, I would like not to have to do this every time I reboot the machine. I also dont want to hack an script to do this on load. Basically, if things are setup currectly, the nvidia_current driver which is installed should load. How can I make sure nvidia_current driver module loads properly when system starts?

  • Passing bundle to activity set as singletask

    So I have a MapActivity that runs an asynchtask that occasionally updates what exactly it's displaying on the map (via a string). I originally pass this string in from the intent when the activity is first created. And then if you click on one of the drawables on the map, it opens a new activity, which can then create a new mapview (same class) with a different string setting. The problem I have is that I only want one instance of the mapview to be running at once. Thus I set android:launchmode="singletask" in the manifest. This works in that it brings the mapactivity to the front, but is there any way to send it a new intent bundle to get a new setting for the string it needs? I tried regetting the extras from the bundle, but it seems to retain the old bundle, not the new intent that was passed to it. I'm not sure I want to do startActivityForResult because the 2nd activity may or may not want to update the original activity. I hope that made sense. I can post code if necessary, but I think that should explain my situation.

  • gems, bundle command, and ruby not found in new terminal window

    So I installed ruby with rvm, ran a bundle install and installed a bunch of gems, etc. It all works just fine in the original terminal window I did all of this in but I opened up a new terminal window and now I'm getting errors like bundle: command not found and gem command not found. I tried doing a symbolic link for the gem command but then when I do gem list it displays a much shorter list of my local gems and not at all the ones I need for bundle install.   • How do I target a specific driver for libata kernel parameter modding?

    Sorry for the cryptic title. Not sure how to phrase it. This is it in a nutshell: I'm running a 22-disk setup, 19 of those in a ZFS array, 15 of those backed by three port multipliers attached to SATA controllers driven by the sata_sil24 module. When running full speed (SATA2, i.e. 3 Gbps), the operation is pretty quirky (simple read errors will throw an entire PMP into spasms for a long time, sometimes with pretty awful results). Booting with kernel parameter libata.force=1.5G to force SATA controllers into "legacy" speeds completely fixes all issues with the PMPs. Thing is, my ZFS pool is backed by a fast cache SSD on my ICH10R controller. Another SSD on this same controller holds the system. Doing libata.force=1.5G immediately shaves about 100 MB/s off the transfer rate of my SSDs. For the root drive, that's not such a big deal, but for the ZFS cache SSD, it is. It effectively makes the entire zpool slower for sustained transfers than it would've been without the cache drive. Random access and fs tree lookups, of course still benifit. I'm hoping, though, that there's some way to pass the .force=1.5G parameter on to just the three SATA controllers being backed by the sata_sil24 module. But listing the module options for this, no such option exists. Is this possible? And if so, how? Thanks :)

    I've been getting an issue since upgrading to 2.6.39 in Natty from the Kernel-PPA repository. When I do a sudo update-initramfs -u I get the following error message. update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.39-0-generic-pae W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8105e-1.fw for module r8169 I did notice that firmware wasn't in the allocated directory. Does anyone know where to get the firmware files for this.
