  • Django syncdb not making tables for my app

    It used to work, and now it doesn't. python manage.py syncdb no longer makes tables for my app. From settings.py: INSTALLED_APPS = ( 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'django.contrib.sites', 'mysite.myapp', 'django.contrib.admin', ) What could I be doing wrong? The break appeared to coincide with editing this model in models.py, but that could be total coincidence.   • Keeping track of business rules within IT department?

    I am looking for the best way to keep track of the business rules for both developers and everybody else (support staff / management) in a startup enviroment. The challenge is that our business model requires quite a lot of different business rules, which are created pretty much on the fly and evolving organically after that. After running this project for 3+ years, we have so many of such rules that often the only way to be sure about what the application is supposed to do in a certain situation is to go find the module responsible for that process and analyze its code and comments. That is all fine as long as you have one single developer who created the entire application from the scratch, but every new developer needs to go over pretty much entire codebase in order to understand how the application works. Even bigger problem is that non technical employees don't even have that option and therefore are forced to ask me pretty much every day how some certain case would be handled by the application. Quick example - we only start charging for our customer campaigns once they have been active for at least 72 hours, but at the same time we stop creating invoices for campaigns that belong to insolvent accounts and close such accounts within a month of the first failed charge. That does not apply to accounts that are set to "non-chargeable" which most commonly belongs to us since we are using the service ourselves. The invoices are created on the 1st of each month and include charges from the previous month + any current balance that the account might have. However, some customers are charged only 4 days after their invoice has been generated due to issues with their billing department. In addition to that, invoices are also created when customer deactivates his campaign, but that can only be done once the campaign is not longer under mandatory 6 month contract, unless account manager approves early deactivation. I know, that's quite a lot of rules that need to be taken into account when answering a question "when do we bill our customers", but actually I could still append an asterisk at the end of each sentence in order to disclose some rare exceptions. Of course, it would be easiest just to keep the business rules to the minimum, but we need to adapt to changing marketplace - i.e. less than a year ago we had no contracts whatsoever. One idea that I had so far was a simplistic wiki with categories corresponding to areas such as "Account activation", "Invoicing", "Collection procedures" and so on. Another idea would be to have giant interactive flowchart showing the entire customer "life cycle" from prospecting to account deactivation. What are your experiences / suggestions?

  • Django says the "id may not be NULL" but why is it?

    I'm going crazy today. I just tried to insert a new record and it threw back a "post_blogpost.id may not be NULL" error. Here's my model: class BlogPost(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=100) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=100) who = models.ForeignKey(User, default=1) when = models.DateTimeField() intro = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) content = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) counter = models.PositiveIntegerField(default=0) published = models.BooleanField(default=False) css = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) class Meta: ordering = ('-when', 'id') There are a number of functions beneath the model too but I won't include them in full here. Their names are: content_cache_key, clear_cache, __unicode__, reads, read, processed_content. I'm adding through the admin... And I'm running out of hair.

The example that I have in mind is a business object validation on a EJB based architecture.     I need a unit test to make sure I am accumulating vacation hours properly. But vacation hours accumulate according to a business rule, if the rule changes, then the unit test breaks. Is this acceptable? Should I expose the rule through a method and then call that method from both my code and my test to ensure that the unit test isn't so fragile? My question is: What is the right way to unit test business rules that may change?

I want to get a subject, and get its related past questions of a particular year. I was thinking of fetching a subject and getting its related past question. Currently am implementing my code such that I rather get the past question whose subject and year correspond to any specified subject like this_subject=Subject.objects.get(name=the_subject) thepastQ=Pastquestion.objects.get(year=2000,subject=this_subject) I was thinking there is a better way to do this. Or is this already a better way? Please Do tell ?

    which open source business intelligence solution would you recommend? All I need is to build some cubes and let the end user play with dimensions, filter data, sort, etc, and once it's done being able to export it to excel... I'd like the solution to be as simple and easy on resources as possible, and also I'd like it to be as much open source as possible, by the way. I've heard that many solutions available do have many restrictions when it comes to there community version.   • Business Objects - Containers or functional?

    Where I work, we've gone back and forth on this subject a number of times and are looking for a sanity check. Here's the question: Should Business Objects be data containers (more like DTOs) or should they also contain logic that can perform some functionality on that object. Example - Take a customer object, it probably contains some common properties (Name, Id, etc), should that customer object also include functions (Save, Calc, etc.)? One line of reasoning says separate the object from the functionality (single responsibility principal) and put the functionality in a Business Logic layer or object. The other line of reasoning says, no, if I have a customer object I just want to call Customer.Save and be done with it. Why do I need to know about how to save a customer if I'm consuming the object? Our last two projects have had the objects separated from the functionality, but the debate has been raised again on a new project. Which makes more sense? EDIT These results are very similar to our debates. One vote to one side or another completely changes the direction. Does anyone else want to add their 2 cents? EDIT Eventhough the answer sampling is small, it appears that the majority believe that functionality in a business object is acceptable as long as it is simple but persistence is best placed in a separate class/layer.     As a follow up to our original certification announcement regarding Oracle Linux 6, Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (12.1.1 and higher) is now certified on the following additional Linux x86/x86-64 operating systems: Oracle Linux 6 (32-bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (32-bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64-bit) Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) version 11 (64-bit) New installations of the E-Business Suite on these operating systems require version 12.1.1 of the Release 12 media.  Cloning of existing 12.1 Linux environments to this new OS is also certified using the standard Rapid Clone process.
