• Microsoft launches IE9 preview – No support for XP

  Microsoft launched the developer preview version of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) at MIX 10 web conference yesterday.This release is aimed getting the feedback from website designers , developers and other community to make IE9 development better from its previous versions. Microsoft will update the developer preview every eight weeks and the next update is expected on mid of march.So what is new and interesting  about IE9 Chakra Chakra (The new scripting engine of IE9) renders the Java script much faster compared to IE8 and other browsers thus improving the performance significantly.According to Microsoft Chakra renders the java script in background with a separate thread parallel to the main engine which is complete new way of rendering from the current browser technologies Standards Microsoft is desperate to make ( surprisingly!!!) IE9 compliance to  web standards by supporting the open standards such as Accelerated support for HTML5 video support for new web technologies such as CSS3 and SVG2. ACID3 Test IE9 scores (55/100) in its latest ACID3 test which is much better compared to the IE8 score (22/100) but not even  nearer to their rivals Chrome, Opera, and Safari which scores 100/100 in ACID3 testing I am little disappointed over not able to download the  developer preview on my XP machine. • Sputnik – Google’s Java script conformance tester now as website

  Sputnik the JavaScript 3 conformance test suite launched by Google last year is now available as Google Labs (Sputnik Test)product. You can browse it like any other  website and run over 5000 java script function tests to check your browser compatibility This product allows you do the following options Run :  You can run the complete test suite on your browser to check the compliance to  ECMA-262 standards.You can also browse trough  the failed test case. Compare : You can compare java script conformance of the various leading browsers in the market. Now web developers can be more cautious while designing websites to make them compatible with multiple browsers. Google is committed to review and release multiple version periodically with updated test cases. According to the latest sputnik test  result released by Google, Opera 10.5 leads the race with only 78 failures. Microsoft IE 8 performed the worst (463 failures) . • Globe Trotters: Asian Healthcare CIOs need ‘Security Inside Out’ Approach

  In our second edition of Globe trotters, wanted to share a feature article that was recently published in Enterprise Innovation. • Does SOLARIS have similar file to Linux's /etc/security/limits.conf?

  I'm doing compliance check on SOLARIS 10 OS. I need to verify the following parameter settings: core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited open files (-n) 65536 stack size (kbytes, -s) unlimited cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited Sure I could use ulimit -cH to get display above. But I also need to find where those settings are. I'm from Linux, in Linux we have /etc/security/limts.conf file to hold alike information. Do we have such file in Solaris? TIA!

• Upgrade OpenSSL 0.9.8k to OpenSSL 1.0.1c on Ubuntu 10.04

  We're currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and based on the PCI Compliance results, we're told to upgrade our OpenSSL. I attempted to do this using this reference: http://sandilands.info/sgordon/upgrade-latest-version-openssl-on-ubuntu and http://www.lunarforums.com/dedicated_web_hosting_at_lunarpages/upgrading_openssl-t35015.0.html Unfortunately, they didn't work for me. And when I attempted to remove the old version prior to installation, it looks like it broke a few thins in the system. The article from Steve Gordon seemed like it would work for me, but when I ran the openssl version command, it still read that it was the old version. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should do. Fix: After following the steps from Steven Gordon, make sure you restart apache and / or restart your computer (I did both, but I'm sure a simple restart will fix it right up).

• Oracle on NFS vmdk beats native NFS!?

  Hi, my colleagues are pursuing this with Netapp and Oracle - but I thought I'd post here on the off chance someone else has seen this We have a RedHat 5 VM (fully up2date) running Oracle 11i with data disks mounted via the VM's linux kernel NFS using Oracle's recommended mount options and the performance is very inconsistent (Querys that should take < 2 seconds sometimes take 60 seconds) Funny thing is we can run the same queries perfectly consistently < 2 seconds on a VMDK residing on SAME NetApp NFS datastore! Makes me wish Oracle and NetApp collaborated as closely as VMware and NetApp did on the Virtual Storage Console we used to perfectly set the NFS options and keep them in compliance... We have tried a few Linux NFS options others have posted and not seen improvement so far. We are now creating VMDK's for the VM to replace the Linux NFS mounted and workaround the issue as our developers need consistent performance ASAP.

• Disabling weak ciphers on Windows 2003

  For PCI-DSS compliance you have to disable weak ciphers. PCI-DSS permits a minimum cipher size of 128 bits. However for the highest score (0 I believe) you should only accept 168 bit ciphers but you can still be compliant if you permit 128 bit ciphers. The trouble is that when we disable all but 168 bit encryption it seems to disable both inbound and out bound secure channels. For example we'd like to lock down inbound IIS HTTPS to 168 bit ciphers but permit outbound 128 bit SSL connections to payment gateways/services from service applications running on the server (not all payment gateways support 168 bit only we just found out today). Is it possible to have cipher asymmetry on Windows 2003? I am told it is all or nothing.

• How to Audit and Monitor BI Publisher Reports Access?

  Do you know who is accessing to which report at what time at your reporting environment ? As you delivered the BI Publisher reports to the production environment and your users start using them as part of their daily business operations you might wonder such questions. With compliance becoming an integral part of any business requirement, auditing your reporting environment is also becoming one of the most critical and hot agenda in today’s enterprise reporting deployments. Also, I believe that auditing the reporting environment is not just for the compliance, but also the way to understand how your users are using the reports and be able to improve the user reporting experience. BI Publisher have introduced Enterprise Level Auditing feature with its 11G release, with an integration of Oracle Fusion Middleware Audit Framework, which comes out of the box with the installation. Yes, this is another great example of the benefit of its tight integration with Fusion Middleware introduced with BI Publisher 11g release. What Information Can I Know about our Reporting Environment? With this new Auditing feature you can now gain the following insights. When a particular user login or logout What report is accessed by who and when and how How long does it take to process a particular report Yes, it’s all there. This is a great news for 10G users, right ? I used to be one of them working with many different IT organizations and were craving for this, but it’s here now with 11G! How Can I Access to the Auditing Information? With the Fusion Middleware Auditing Framework, BI Publisher feed such information either to a log file or to a database. If you decided to get the data into the database then, of course you know, you can use BI Publisher to report and publish, or visualize the data to gain more insights. One thing though, in order to feed the data it requires a few extra steps, which I’ll cover it later.  Regardless of whether it’s the log file or the database to store the Auditing data, first, you need to enable the Auditing feature, which is not enabled as default. So, let’s take a look at how to enable it. How to Enable Auditing Feature? Here is a quick list of the steps: Enable Auditing related properties in BI Publisher configuration file Copy component_events.xml file to Fusion Middleware Audit Framework’s location Enable Auditing Policy with Fusion Middleware Control (Enterprise Manager) Restart WebLogic Server Enable Auditing related properties in BI Publisher configuration file Open xmlp-server-config.xml file, which is located under $BI_HOME/ user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/config/bipublisher/repository/Admin/Configuration directory. Set the following three properties values to ‘true’. AUDIT_ENABLED MONITORING_ENABLED AUDIT_JPS_INTEGRATION The ‘AUDIT_JPS_INTEGRATION’ is not in the file as default, so you need to add this. Go to the following directory. $BI_HOME /oracle_common/modules/oracle.iau_11.1.1/components 2. Create a directory called ‘xmlpserver’ 3. Copy component_events.xml file from /user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/config/bipublisher/repository/Admin/Audit To the newly created ‘xmlpserver’ directory. Enable Auditing Policy with Fusion Middleware Control (EM) Now you can set a level of the auditing for each BI Publisher’s auditing type by using Fusion Middleware Control (a.k.a. Enterprise Manager). 1. Login to Fusion Middleware Control UI http://hostname:port/em (e.g. reporting.oracle.com:7001/em) 2. Access to Audit Policy configuration UI from the menu Under WebLogic Domain, right-click bifoundation_domain, select Security and then click Audit Policy.   3. Set Audit Level for BI Publisher. While you can select ‘Custom’ to set a customized level of Auditing for each component, I’m selecting ‘Medium’ for this exercise.   Restart WebLogic Server After all the above settings, now you need to restart the WebLogic Server instance in order to take those changes in effect. If you’re on Windows you can simply do this by selecting ‘Stop BI Servers’ and ‘Start BI Servers’ from the Start menu. If you’re on Linux then you can run ‘stopWebLogic.sh’ and ‘startWebLogic.sh’, which can be found under $BI_HOME/user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/bin Start Auditing! Yes, every login and log out will be recorded, and every report access will be recorded in this log file. Now, looking at this text file to understand what’s going on is pretty overwhelming. And accessing to this log file, which is located at the server’s file system where the BI Publisher/WebLogic Server are running, is another challenge in typical deployment scenarios. And that’s where the database storage option for the Auditing data  comes into a picture. I’ll talk about this tomorrow, so stay tuned!

• US GAAP and IFRS Convergence May Be Delayed Even More

  Yesterday, on March 10, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) met to discuss the changes in financial statement presentation. Over the last six months, the FASB and IASB have been working feverishly to converge US GAAP and IFRS standards to meet the 2011 deadline. In March alone, the standards-setters met eight times. Many people fear that this accelerated pace is compromising the quality of the end product and that maybe they should slow down and do their due diligence. According to WG&L Accounting & Compliance Alert Checkpoint 3/10/2010, (which requires a subscription to view the full article) "Some statement preparers and investors who advise the FASB believe that the process would be better served if it was slowed down so that more attention could be paid to quality." "Should 2011 be looked at as a line in the sand?" asked Joan Amble, executive vice president and corporate comptroller for American Express Co. "We don't think that due process should be compromised for the due date," concurred Lewis Dulitz, vice president of accounting policies and research for medical products supplier Covidien plc. I personally have mixed emotions about this. On one hand, I have been growing impatient with how slow the US has jumped on the IFRS band wagon. On the other hand, being the conservative that I am and knowing this convergence will be costly and disruptive to businesses, I would prefer to be safe than sorry and get it right the first time.
