How do I install a Wimax usb driver?

I am using wimax usb modem in Ubuntu 9.04 properly. I am familiar with Ubuntu 10.04 and try to install the same deb file to use my wimax USB modem, but it could not install and give me the following error message: $ sudo dpkg -i green-packet-wimax-usb_i386.iso.deb (Reading database ... 206628 files and directories currently installed.) What is the proper way to install the 3.4 kernel?

Kernel 3.2 has an annoying error for my wireless card (rtl8192se-b) that makes the connection drop and/or prevents the card to make a connection to the wireless router. Dealing with it was very frustrating until I found out the bug was corrected in 3.4. I downloaded: linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_amd64.deb and installed with: sudo dpkg -i * Now the wireless works fine, but I have two problems that cannot solve. The first one is minor: plymouth would not start at all. But if I boot with the 3.2 kernel it works fine. The second one is serious: sometimes the computer won't shut down or reboot. The X server terminates but the computer shows part of my grub background and will stay there forever using 100% of the CPU. I have a Toshiba Qosmio with an Core i7 and nvidia graphic card (using nvidia-current). During one shutdown, I briefly read a message that said that the virtualbox module couldn't be unloaded from the kernel. I tried to solve this by removing and purging virtualbox and installing it back. I don't see the message anymore, but sometimes the computer won't shutdown nor reboot. Am I missing something to properly configure the new kernels? Thanks!

Brother MFC-J470DW scan function "Check Connection"

I have a Brother MFC-J470DW printer that I have connected to a Linux desktop (running Ubuntu 14.04) using a wireless router network. The printer works fine for printing and copying, but now I want to add the scan function. To set up the scan function, I went to the Brother web page for this printer: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=mfcj470dw_us_eu_as&os=128 and under Scanner Drivers selected "Scanner driver 64bit (deb package)", "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)", and "Scanner Setting file (deb package)". For each package, I clicked the EULA, and selected "open with Ubuntu Software Center". Then after the USC window pops up, I click on Install and the red line goes from left to right. In each case, the USC window then had a green checkmark and the Install box changes to Reinstall (that's how you know it worked). So now I try it out. Hitting the Scan button on the printer, selecting "Scan to file", and hitting ok produces the message "Check Connection". I checked the Brother Linux Information FAQ (scanner) page and the 14th question seems the same as mine: When I try to use the scan key on my network connected machine, I receive the error "Check connection" or I can not select anything except "scan to FTP". I explored the solution given for this FAQ, but found from ifconfig that I am already using eth0, the default setting, so presumably that is not the problem. I also found brscan-skey installed in /usr/bin and did drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey -t drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey but that didn't help - I still get the "Check connection" message. What can you suggest to fix this problem?

Do we need to adopt a black-box asset our project is inheriting from its predecessor?

Our client has an eCommerce site which was developed by an in-house team, and is now showing its age. I work for a firm brought in as external contractors to build a replacement. Part of the current site is a Flash viewer applet which displays media about the product - zoom-able images, 360-degree views, movies, and so on. We need to show the same media the current site does, so we are simply reusing the viewer. The viewer is embedded on a page in the usual way, and told what media to show by means of an XML file it loads from our server, which is pretty simple for us to generate. We've got this working; it was pretty straightforward. But what else do we need to do? The thing is, as far as we're concerned, the viewer is a binary blob which is served from the client's content-distribution network. We embed it, feed it some XML, and it does its job, but we have no power over its internals. It's completely opaque to us - a black box. We can use it to do what it does, but we can't change it, so if we ever need to do something different, we're stuffed. We're building this site for the client, and when we're done, we'll hand it over for them to maintain. We won't be doing the maintenance ourselves. There's a small team within the client who are working as part of our team, and who will be the ones doing the maintenance. That team only includes one person from the team that built the old site, and it's not someone who knows the image viewer. The people who do know the image viewer are not slated to join our team when our system replaces theirs - they'll be moved to other projects. The documentation on the viewer is extremely thin, and as far as i know doesn't cover the internals at all. My worry is that if someone doesn't take some positive action, all knowledge of the internal workings of the viewer - even down to where the source code for it is - will be lost. It's possible it already has been. Is this something to worry about? If so, whose job is it to worry about it? What should they do about it once they've got worried?

I was reminded of it because I just finished a 3 month set of personal projects and was reviewing the success of those projects while putting together my next set of 3 month projects. During this review, I noticed that a good number of my projects did not have the level of success that I wanted. The results were good, but they could have been better. Then it hit me, I didn’t have clear enough doneness criteria. As a Scrum Practitioner, I wouldn’t think of running a sprint without reviewing the backlog with Einstein's Razor, so why wouldn’t I do the same for my own projects? I can hear a few of you asking "What's Einstein's Razor?" I'm glad you asked. I was once told that Einstein told an audience, "If you can't explain what you do to a relatively bright six year old, you probably don't understand it yourself." This quote had an impact on me, especially early in my career as a solo developer. At the time, I was mostly doing end to end software development. I found that I saved myself a lot of pain and trouble by turning that quote around to “If you can't explain your project's doneness criteria in such a way that a relatively bright six year old can't competently determine your projects success or failure, then you have not broken it down to a fine enough level.” There are more negatives in that quote than I’m happy with, but it still gives me tons of value to this day. In your opinion, in your current projects, could a 6 year old competently pass or fail your next sprint? What risks are you running if your answer is “No” ?

12.10 unable to connect to the Internet using Chrome or Firefox

I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

USB sound device not recognized

I have a USB sound device that used to work back when I ran other versions of Ubuntu. Now I can only partially see the device. I have tried many things I saw in Google searches, but none solve my problem. cat /proc/asound/cards sees the device as card 0 aplay -l shows C-Media USB Audio as card 0 alsamixer sees the device asoundconf list does not show the device sound preferences shows no hardware asoundconf-gtk set the device to pulseaudio, but fails with python errors ending in ValueError: too many values to unpack in the function set_default_card. I think this is the cause of my problem. The device is a Sony virtual phones wireless headphone amplifier.

What's the velocity? How big is a story point? How many story points is that team producing per man hour? People are sadly missing the whole point. Take your measurements up a level or two. When you get down to it, the only metric that makes any difference, is ROI. The problem is that often times, the developers work in a dark hole, far removed from the realities of how exactly they get paid. A bigger problem is that mid-level managers tend to be further removed from the realities of ROI. A lot of times mid-level managers get tasked with tracking their teams "productivity" using things like, "lines of code", or "completeness of the productivity reports." Monetize your projects and then track your velocity against business value (real dollars). When your development teams can say, "Last year, our team cost the business 2 million dollars and we know that because of our efforts, the company saved 2 million dollars in waste and increased revenues by another 4 million dollars." At that point you have just moved your development team from a cost center, to a profit center. You might have to give them a raise, but they have demonstrated that they have earned it.

I tried to install Webmin on Ubuntu by following the instructions on http://www.webmin.com/deb.html. Using the Update Manager GUI I added the repositories and the key deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib deb http://webmin.mirror.somersettechsolutions.co.uk/repository sarge contrib However when I do an: apt-get update apt-get install webmin I get the error: W: Failed to fetch http://download.webmin.com/download/repository/dists/sarge/Release Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) W: Failed to fetch http://webmin.mirror.somersettechsolutions.co.uk/repository/dists/sarge/Release Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) Looing at the page at the URL I can see: 7029066c27ac6f5ef18d660d5741979a 20 contrib/source/Sources.gz Is the error caused by the fact that the Sources are compressed with gzip or am I doing something wrong?

Renaming debian package

I'm trying to build a customized version of a nginx package for Debian/Ubuntu which had a different set of modules opposed to the default version. What would be the fastest way to modify the debian/ structure (and which files) if I'd want to rename the package from 'nginx' to 'my-nginx' for example? I've got the source deb package unpacked and which files I'd need to modify in nginx-1.4.5/debian/ directory (holding the control, rules.. files) have buildpackage generate my-nginx-1.4.5.deb package instead of nginx-1.4.6.deb package. I appreciate your help!

Google Webmaster Tools Index dropped to Zero [closed]

Earlier this year I rebuilt my website using ZenCart. Immediately I saw a drop in index status from 59 to 0. I then signed up for Google Webmaster Tools and noticed the Index status took a dramatic drop and has never recovered. I have worked to add content and I know I am not done, but have not seen any recovery of this index since. What confuses me is when I look at the sitemap status under Optimization it shows me there are 1239 submitted and 1127 pages indexed. Most of my pages have fallen off page one for relevant search terms and some are as far back as page 7 or 8 where they used to be on the first page. I have made some changes in the past week to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but have not seen any improvements. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? My website is andersonpens.net. Thanks! Install a i386 printer driver into an amd64 distribution or how can I find a good printer based on features?

Hi, I just bought a Lexmark Interpret S408 all-in-one printer. The box said that it supported Ubuntu 8.04, but I told myself it should work with Lucid... well no. The only driver I have found is for i386 while I have a amd64 image installed; the architecture is incompatible. So, the quesiton is : Is it possible to install that driver anyway, somehow? Or do I need to take that printer back to the store and buy another one? If the latter is the only alternative, I need a printer that has wireless connection capability can do color printing is of good price (less than $200 CAD) Thank you for your answers, help, and tips. ** UPDATE ** The driver was given in the form of deb package (for Debian distributions) and I managed to extract the actual deb package driver out of the install program. I ran sudo dpkg -i --force-all lexmark-inkjet-09-driver-1.5-1.i386.deb and the driver installed, and I was able to print something out. But that pretty much ends there; I cannot access anymore of the printer settings, etc. (i.g. scanner, fax, wifi settings, etc.) I should suffice for now as I'm satisfied with the printer's features (and size, and prince), but if I could have a full-linux-supported printer like that one, I would return this one in exchange for the other.

Trying to build/install patched gtk3-engines-oxygen to test bugfix, get shared changelog.Debian.gz is different from other instances of package

I want to just quickly test the patch in this bug report to gtk3-engines-oxygen so it can go upstream. I could test it either temporarily or permanently; I would just like to do it. I currently have the package installed. Asus Machine fails to start due to missing msvcr.dll - what?

So first off a thanks to the internet, knoppix and a post over at http://www.overclock.net/windows/879553-msvcr80-dll-missing-catastrophic-failure.html My Symptoms: my laptop would not boot. Would not let me get anywhere. Just like the symptoms in the post. Thankfully, all I had to do was go rename my avg directory and all was good. But I needed something to boot from and I knew and trusted Knoppix from my past linux experimental days. If it wasn't for Knoppix, I would have probably reformatted my machine and I didn't want that.

How do I make apt-get instal commands not display every package that is installing?

When I install something on terminal, it often shows me a few things for status. For one, it shows download rate (which is fine). Ubuntu 12.04 I'm trying to ugrade my Geforce 8400 to Geforce GTX 560, getting a black screen

I have an NVidia Geforce 8400 which is working fine in Ubuntu 12.04. I have just purchased an NVidia GeForce GTX 560 and have been trying to install it. No matter what I do all I get is a black screen on boot up. I have tried; 1/ Additional Drivers, driver version 295.40, this works for the GeForce 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. 2/ Downloaded driver version 295.40 from NVidias site, was able to install it successfully, it works with my 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. Are there any options I can try?

Response: Agile's Second Chasm

William Pietri over at Agile Focus has written an interesting article entitled, "Agile’s Second Chasm (and how we fell in)" in which he talks about how agile development has fallen into a common trap where large companies are now spending a lot of money hiring agile (Scrum) consultants just so that they can say they are agile, but all the while avoiding any change that is required by Scrum. It echoes the questions that I've been asking for a while, "Can a fortune 500 company actually do agile development?" I'm starting to think that the answer is "usually not" William ask 3 questions at the end of his article that I will answer here. 1) Have I seen agile development brought in and then preemptively customized (read: made into ScrummerFall)? Yes, Scrum is hard and disruptive. It's a spotlight on company dysfunction. In a low trust environment like most fortune 500 companies Scrum will be subverted by anyone who has ever seen "transparency" translate into someone being laid off. 2) If I had to do it all over again, would I change anything? No, this is a natural progression, but the agile principles are powerful enough, that the companies that don't adopt them will no longer be competitive and will start to fail. 3) Is this situation solvable? I think it is. I think that one of the issues is that you often see companies implementing Scrum, but avoiding the agile engineering practices. I believe that you cannot do one without the other. Scrum keeps the ship sailing in smooth deep waters. The agile engineering practices keep the engine running smoothly and cleanly. If you implement agile engineering practices without Scrum, you run the risk of ending up with a great running piece of software that is useful to no one. On the other hand, implementing cargo-cult Scrum without the agile engineering practices and you end up (especially in a fortune 500 company) being steered in the right direction, but with your development practices coming to a dead halt because you have code that can not keep up with the changes in requirements. If you are trying to do Scrum, make sure that you hire some agile engineering coaches, or else you may find your deveolpment engines grinding to a dead halt in the middle of the open ocean.

Sending Mass Emails

I have a massive list of users who registered for accounts and opted into a mailing list on my web site and I am interested in sending out a weekly newsletter. How should I go about doing this. I tried sending it out through my host server, but I received a notice stating that if I did it again they would kick me off the server. Are there any good companies that are designed for this type of thing? I need to find a company that will support this and show me some sort of report about how many emails get opened, deleted, opened then deleted, etc. Any recommendations?
