• Auto update CSS from SASS/SCSS in Rails?

  Maybe I'm confused on how SASS/SCSS works within Rails (2.3.8.) but I was under the impression that if I included the option Sass::Plugin.options[:always_update] = true that whenever I changed my SCSS file and then hit the page (controller) again, the SCSS would recompile. I can't seem to get this to work, and can't seem to find a good tutorial / example for it. I've tried setting the above property in the Environment.rb file, but it didn't seem to do anything. I tried putting it in its own initializer with require 'sass' but that doesn't seem to work either. What am I missing? Or am i just forced to keep a terminal open with a sass --watch command running to be able to rapidly debug / change my styles? thx

• CSS for mobile sometimes reverts back to original

  So most of the time my stylesheets appear properly. The standard/original one always works flawlessly, however it seems sometimes the mobile one is disregarded when looked at from a mobile device I have them designated as follows: <link runat="server" href="CustomStyleSheets/Menu.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="CustomStyleSheets/mobile.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="only screen and (max-device-width: 799px)" /> I'm using a Droid X to view the page, in portrait mode, so the device width shouldn't be exceeding the max-width specified above, but sometimes, randomly, it still reverts back to the original css page. Any way to keep it from doing so?

• What parameters should I use in a Google Maps URL to go to a lat-lon?

  I would like to produce a url for Google Maps that goes to a specific latitude and longitude. Now, I generate a url such as this: http://maps.google.com/maps?z=11&t=k&q=58 41.881N 152 31.324W The resulting map comes up with a round "A" balloon pointer, which seems to point to the nearest named object, and a green arrow, which points to the lat-lon. Sometimes, as in this example, the "A" pointer is centered and is far enough away that you cannot see the pointer to the lat-lon. (Zoom out to see both pointers in this example. The "A" pointer is in the center of Alaska, while the lat-long pointer is on Kodiak Island.) Are there some parameters I can use in the Google Maps URL that will produce a single pointer to a designated lat-lon? (This loads in a separate window. It is not embedded.)

  I am able to get the registration confirmation email to send out in deployment on Heroku, but when I try a registration on localhost:3000, I get the following error: undefined local variable or method `confirmed_at' for #<User:0xb67a1ff0> In my config/environments/production.rb file I have: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'xxxx.com' } And I have an initializer file with the following format: ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :user_name => "[email protected]", :password => "xxxxxx", :domain => "xxxx.com", :address => "smtp.sendgrid.net", :port => "xxx", :authentication => :plain, :enable_starttls_auto => true }; What settings do I need to get the localhost working? • How can I make sure the Sphinx daemon runs?

  I'm working on setting up a production server using CentOS 5.3, Apache, and Phusion Passenger (mod_rails). I have an app that uses the Sphinx search engine and the Thinking Sphinx gem. According to the Thinking Sphinx docs... If you actually want to search against the indexed data, then you’ll need Sphinx’s searchd daemon to be running. This can be controlled using the following tasks: rake thinking_sphinx:start rake ts:start rake thinking_sphinx:stop rake ts:stop What would be the best way to ensure that this takes place in production? I can deploy my app, then manually run rake thinking_sphinx:start, but I like to set things up so that if I have to bounce the server, everything will come back up. Should I put a call to that Rake task in an initializer? Or something in rc.local?

  I've made a web application that has the following architecture: Every form is a UserControl, there is just one actual page (Default.aspx), and a parameter in the URL specifies which UserControl to load. The UserControl is loaded in an UpdatePanel so that it can enjoy full AJAX-iness. There is also an elaborate message displaying mechanism that I use. Eventually messages end up in one designated area on top of the Default.ASPX with some nice formatting 'n stuff. Now, I would also like to capture any unhandled exceptions that originate in the UserControl and display it in this area with all the bells-and-whistles that I've made for messages. How can I do this? The Page.Error and ScriptManager.AsyncPostBackError somehow don't work for me...

• Using XTemplate with SimpleStore in Ext

  I am currently adding some functionality to some old code. There used to be a template which took a flat array of items and spat out some HTML, now the data is coming from a simple store which reads some JSON.. var allwords = [ ['abacteriano', 'abacteriano'], ['abacterial', 'abacteriano'], ['abciximab', 'abciximab'], etc.. So my simplestore goes like this: termStore = new Ext.data.SimpleStore({ fields: ['term', 'lookup'], data: allwords }); This definitly works fine as I use the termStore in a combobox. However I am having difficulty getting it to play with an XTemplate. It seems the syntax in extjs doesn't play well with SO, so this bit wont be in a code block... So I guess I'll describe it :p Essentially its a simple template which tries to get values out of the passed collection by doing {term} I then try and apply it by doing: tpl.overwrite(Ext.get("contentbox"), termStore); This gives me a JS error of "invalid object initializer"

• Will dynamicaly generated content via Javascript hurt SEO

  This is what I would like to do. I would like to load content dynamically. Everything except the actual content will be rendered by javascript. I will place all the require information in a javascript variable or array at the bottom of the page. Then I will use javascript to place the content in the designated area. These are the types of things I would like javascript to render: Login menu Header and logo info Side bar info Footer info Dialog popups Ads All of the MEAT content will not be rendered by javascript. I will use the backend server to put the content in html. My logic is that more of the real content will be in HTML and all the other things will be rendered by javascript. Will this help or hurt SEO?

• Ruby class variable is reset after rails app initialized

  I tried to assign a class static variable like this class QueryLogger < Logger @@query_logger_default_instance = nil def self.default_instance # Use global variable because static variable doesn't work @@query_logger_default_instance ||= self.new(STDOUT) end end In initializers folder of my rails app, I added a file with this code block ActiveRecord::Base.logger = QueryLogger.default_instance In a request (action of controller), I make a call to this: QueryLogger.default_instance. My assumption is that the call to default_instance will always report the same. However, it does not. Now I try to watch stuff in NetBeans by setting breakpoint inside default_instance. Thing happen as expected, the default_instance get called twice, one due to the initializer block and one due to the call to my action. Surprising thing is, in both times, @@query_logger_default_instance report nil inside NetBeans inspector. The first nil report is correct, but the second shocked me. It's look like static variable gets reset after rails app initialized. Is there some magic there?

• WPF application in obj directory doesn't work.

  When I build my WPF application the exe that ends up in the bin directory works just fine, but the one in the obj directory does not. When I Debug the exe from the obj directory I get the following exception: TypeInitializationException was unhandled: The type initializer for 'MyProject.App' threw an exception. So basically I'm wondering why the obj exe doesn't work while the bin one does (I was under the assumption that the obj exe was just copied to the bin) and how to fix it. The reason that I even care is because I'm using Wix to create a MSI for my application and I have a Votive project setup that uses var.MyProject.TargetPath which points to the exe in the obj directory.

• Why Doesn't This Java Code Skip Lines with #?

  I'm trying to allow an external .txt file that is read by a Java script be able to have some comments in the beginning of the file so others can easily edit it and add more to it. But if the file contains # (the sign designated for a line that is a comment) it just returns the error that there is a "Format Error in file" (the IOException - so it is getting past that first "IF"...) Can someone help?   I want to use both ContextLoaderListener (so that I can pass Spring Beans to my servlet) as well as DispatchServlet (Spring MVC). However, currently I have to pass init param to these both class initializer: <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value> /WEB-INF/spring/app-config.xml </param-value> So, I use the same xml for these both classes. Wonder if it would lead to my beans being initialized twice? If yes, how would I do to avoid that?

• Trick to getting initWithNibFile to be invoked?

  I've implemented a View Controller, and I'm trying to do some very basic initialization in initWithNibFile...which I understand to be the designated initializer for View Controller objects. I've tried to put breakpoints on the code, and have put very simple NSLog statements into it as well. Regardless...I'm not seeing it be executed (and the object i'm attempting to alloc/init inside the function is also not being allocated - so I'm about 99% sure I'm not hitting the code. Is there something I need to do elsewhere to cause this method to be invoked? I'm getting a clean build, no warnings or errors. And the app successfully loads up the View, and I can invoke a ButtonClick method I've coded and connected to this same View Controller. Any suggestions would be appreciated. TC

• Loading UINavigationController subclass from a Nib

  My situation is as follows: My class SettingsViewController is a subclass of UINavigationController. That class contains the logic of its rootViewController. For example, it acts as the delegate and data source for two table views in that root view controller. I have no problem setting this up programmatically. In the initializer of SettingsViewController, I can create an additional UIViewController to serve as the root view controller, position the table views in its view, and set their delegates and data sources to self. But I want to load that root view via a Nib. The problem is, I do not know how to connect that Nib with my SettingsViewController, how to set the delegates and data sources. The SettingsViewController is not accessible from within the Nib. 'File Owner' represents the root view controller, not the SettingsViewController. How do I access my UINavigationController subclass from within my root view controllers Nib? Thanks in advance.

• Build turns partially transparent image pixels black

  I'm very new to C# and I've run into a problem and haven't been able to solve it. I have a row of buttons that have .png images assigned to them. The images are in .png format to allow transparency, and smoothing the edges in GIMP leaves some semi-transparent pixels. I've set the Image List Toolbar (imglToolbar)'s properties to recognize "Transparent" as the designated color to show up as transparent. I'm working in Visual Studio 2005. The strange thing is that everything looks great when I'm viewing the Visual C# form preview window. The icons look exactly as they should. However, once I actually build the project, the buttons treat every semi-transparent pixel near the edge of the image as if it's black. My WCF Service Interface looks like this: [ServiceContract] public interface ISettingsService { [OperationContract(Action = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestSettingsMessage_SettingsResponseMessage/Process", ReplyAction = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestSettingsMessage_SettingsResponseMessage/ProcessResponse") ] SettingsResponseMessage FetchSettings(RequestSettingsMessage request); } My NSB WCF service is defined as: public class CoreService : WcfService<RequestSettingsMessage, SettingsResponseMessage> { } When I invoke the FetchSettings method on the service, I get an exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'NServiceBus.WcfSer vice`2' threw an exception. ---- System.InvalidOperationException: Centerlink.Services.Core.Msg.Settings.SettingsResponseMessage must be an enum representing error codes returned by the server. It seems that the WcfService< class is restricting the return type of a WCF method to be an enum. How can I have my service return something other than an enum? Do I need to create a custom implementation of NServiceBus.WcfService<?

Can anyone help me make this specific kind of initializer portable? • I want absolute atomicity on a single couchdb instance (insert, fail if already existing)

  I've come to really love the couchdb style of organizing and updating data, but there are a few situations where I really need to be able to create an entry and determine if an equivalent entry is already in existence before returning to the user. The only situation that this is absolutely necessary for my application is user registration. I'm fine with having all user registration writes go to a particular, designated couchdb instance known as the "registration-instance". I want to hash the user_id into some _id to use. Then execute a put with this _id, but fail if the _id is already inserted. I need to return to the user that the user name is already reserved, and I cannot detect the conflict later and resolve it at that point, because the user would be under the impression that they had reserved the user name. I don't see why couchdb couldn't provide some way to do this, under the assumption that you designate that inserts for a particular "type" of document always are routed to a particular instance.
