• Why don't Direct2D and DirectWrite use traditional COM objects?

  I'm toying with a little 2D game engine in C# and decided to use Direct2D and DirectWrite for rendering. I know there's the Windows API Code Pack and SlimDX, but I'd really like to dig in and write an interface from scratch. I'm trying to do it without Managed C++, but Direct2D and DirectWrite don't appear to use traditional COM objects. They define interfaces that derive from IUnknown, but there appears to be no way to actually use them from C# with COM interop. There are IIDs in d2d1.h, but no CLSID. Of course, I'm really new to COM interop, so perhaps I'm just missing something. Can someone shed some light on this situation?

• Why does TheyWorkForYou (TWFY) web API always returns '{}'

  I'm calling a web API exposed by TheyWorkForYou (TWFI). http://www.theyworkforyou.com/api/ I'm using the Python bindings provided by twfython: http://code.google.com/p/twfython/ I wrote some code to call this API a few months ago, at which time it worked fine. But now I dig it out to run it again, no matter what query I ask of the API, it always returns '{}' (an empty dictionary). For example the following code, which should return a list of all MPs: from twfy import TWFY API_KEY = 'XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX' twfy = TWFY.TWFY(API_KEY) print twfy.api.getMPs(output='js') Am I being really dumb? What else should I check?

• Cocoa Memory Usage

  I'm trying to track down some peculiar memory behavior in my Cocoa desktop app. My app does a lot of image processing using NSImage and uploads those images to a website over HTTP using NSURLConnection. After uploading several hundred images (some very large), when I run Instrument I get no leaks. I've also run through MallocDebug and get no leaks. When I dig into object allocations using Instrument I get output like this: GeneralBlock-9437184, Net Bytes 9437184, # Net 1 GeneralBlock-192512, Net Bytes 2695168, # Net 14 and etc., for smaller sizes. When I look at these in detail, they're marked as being owned by 'Foundation' and created via NSConcreteMutableData initWithCapacity. During HTTP upload I'm creating a post body using NSMutableData, so I'm guessing these are buffers Cocoa is caching for me when I create the NSMutableData objects. Is there a way to force Cocoa to free these? I'm 90% positive I'm releasing correctly (and Instruments and MallocDebug seem to confirm this), but I think Cocoa is keeping these around for perf reasons since I'm allocating so many MSMutableData buffers.

• Are the svn ruby bindings provided as a gem?

  I see a couple dozen gems that relate to svn, but what little documentation I can find on any of them shows that they are command-line wrappers and misc helpers. (svn-command, svn-hooks, etc.) I've seen code in the wild that does things like: require 'svn/core' and SVN.Repos.add(...), but the author of that module pulled his svn ruby tools via apt-get. This would not be an option for me, as I'm developing a windows/osx tool. Which gem am I after? From there, I'm happy to dig through code in lieu of documents, but with a call to gem query --name-matches svn --remote returning about 30 hits, I need to narrow it down a bit first.

• access denied trying extracting an archive on the windows user temp folder

  I'm trying to run a command-line process (which is extraction of a .7z archive) on a file that lies in a temporary folder on the windows user temp directory (C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp), using Process in my c# app. I think the process return error that happens because of "access denied" because I can see a win32Exception with error code 5 when I dig in the prcoess object of .NET. doing the same on some other location worked fine before, so I guess maybe it's something I'm not supposed to do ? (running a process to use a file on the the %TEMP%) perhaps I need to pass security somehow?

  hi frnds, I am facing the problem from a month and didn't find anything from google.. I am using UIView for pdf display. there is no problem with pdf but problem is with transition. I have to turn each page of pdf with realistic page turn exp. I search, dig a lot about that but i didn't get anything that how to do that. I don't want to use any API'S like codeflake or any other. all i want to do this by my own programming. First i read that this can be done using cocos2d or CAAnimation but i want to know how? b'coz realistic page i think so is completely 3d concept. • Avoiding thumbnail name collisions with sorl-thumbnail

  Understanding that I should probably just dig into the source to come up with a solution, I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a tactic for dealing with this. In my project, I have a lot of images being generated outside of the application. I'm isolating them on the filesystem based on a model's pk. For example, a model instance with a pk of 121 might have the following images: .../thumbs/1/2/1/img.1.jpg .../thumbs/1/2/1/img.2.jpg ... .../thumbs/1/2/1/img.27.jpg Since the image filenames themselves are not guaranteed to be unique, I'm looking for a way to inform sorl (at runtime) that I'd like to prefix thumbs for this model with the instance pk value. Is this even possible without patching sorl?

• Keycodes of function keys with F-lock off?

  Many recent keyboard from Microsoft and Logitech have a so-called F-Lock key, which toggles the function keys F1 to F12 between their traditional keycodes and new meanings that are printed onto the keys: F1=Help F2=Undo F3=Redo F4=Open ... . (See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Lock.) This means that long-established shortcuts such as Alt+F4 no longer work if the F-lock is off, and googling shows that quite a few people are unhappy about this. So I'm wondering, what virtual key (VK) codes do the function keys send when F-lock is off? VK_F13 to VK_F24 perhaps? Or do they not trigger standard keyboard events at all? (I haven't got such a keyboard to try and find out myself, and didn't manage to dig up anything on MSDN about this.)

• Database of common translated phrases for localization?

  I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library. • Externalising Google Maps InfoWindow Content When Marker Is Selected

  Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to take the content of a Google Maps InfoWindow and place it in an external DIV when the marker on the map is clicked? I've had a good dig around both the API docs and Google to see if I can find any examples or information relating to this but have had no luck so far. However I've not had a lot of time since I got asked about this one so I have had to skim a bit so it could be that I've missed something but nothing seems to be jumping out at me. Essentially I'd just like to know if this is indeed possible so that I don't waste anymore time researching something that is currently not possible with Google Maps. However if anyone has any code, examples, or ideas about how to go about doing this then that would be a very much appreciated! Thanks, Mark

• Discussion: Working TDD in a Scrum context

  Hi all, When I work TDD I tend to start out with the big picture and create the tests that should succeed in order for the overall assignment to be completed - it then kicks off a number of supporting classes/methods/tests as I 'dig in'. If my assignment has been planned out in detail, I would then open one task, and in order to solve it, open another and then another. Only when the overall tests are succeeding can I close the original task, which means that at any given time, I would have a number of open tasks. I find that this approach conflict somewhat with the scrum approach where, ideally, I should be able to take and close a task within a day's work - and never have more than one task open at a time. I'm looking for input about how you manage this in your project - references to articles are also very welcome, I'm sure this has been debated thoroughly somewhere... • Flex: Would a computational engine for a Connect-4 type game be too slow?

  OK, I was just fooling around in my spare time and have made this cool interface and game-playing code for a Connect-4 type game, written in Flex and playable by 2 human players in Flash. It accurately detects wins, etc. I'm smart enough to know that I've done the easy part. Before I dig into an AI for game play, I wanted to ask if this is the kind of thing that can really be handled computationally by a Flash plugin. It seems to me that for every turn up until the end there are 8 possible moves, 8 responses to each move, etc. So wouldn't a perfect engine have to be able to potentially see 8^8 moves (over 16 million), and a fairly good engine see up to a million? I don't know game coding so this is new to me. What's a reasonable move horizon for such a game to be able to see?

Popcorn does not have sizzle() } } It is known and definite in polymorphism rules that a refernce of a superclass cannot invoke methods of subclass without downcasting (even if it refers to an object of the given subclass). However in the above case what is the "key" to invoke the sizzle() method?

  Hi, Can any one tell me when this error occurs . I suspect this is coming when added any new js in Grails . I'm unable to dig this : 16 Apr, 2010 4:58:25 PM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader loadClass INFO: Illegal access: this web application instance has been stopped already. Could not load org.codehaus.groovy.grails.plugins.codecs.HTMLCodecBeanInfo.   In a recent meeting, I mentioned that I've seen a few websites with horizontal sliding panels and thought the UI was elegant, uncluttered and accessible. Naturally, I was asked to provide examples of those sites, but can't seem to dig up any of them now. Actually, I've been looking on an off for the past few days. (blush) Sooo.... I thought that I would put it out to the brilliant and talented folks who frequent StackOverflow. • IIS reset details

  What exactly happens when we do IISreset? What resources get released? We have an ASP.Net website (.net 1.1) which use Crystal reports 11. Lately, running reports are throwing several crystal report specific exceptions and then the users can't run reports anymore. Resetting IIS lets the users log back in and run the reports until it fails the next time. Knowing exactly what resources are released when IIS is reset will help us dig deeper to find the root cause. Any help?

• How do I consume a COM+ local server from C#?

  I have a web application from a company that has gone out of business. We're looking to extend the web app a bit with some asp.net functionality. The web app was written as an ISAPI application in Delphi, and uses COM+ to talk to the SQL Server and handles things like session management and authentication. So, in order to get the current user and other details, I have to use the undocument COM+ components. I was able to dig out the type library and auto generated IDL, but at this point i'm lost in creating a .NET proxy class for this. Is there a way to autogenerate the .net COM+ proxy either from the .dll itself (extracting the typelib info) or from the IDL? Note: These seem to be simple COM style objects hosted in COM+ servers, no subscriptions or transaction monitoring..

• Customizing Hibernate Criteria - Adding conditions to a left join

  I need to be able to do the following: Select * from Table1 left join Table2 on id1 = id2 AND i1 = ? Hibernate criteria doesn't allow be to specify the i1 = ? part. The existing code is using hibernate criteria and it would be a huge refactor to swap out for HQL Does anybody have any tips how I could implement this differently or any way to override the Hibernate Criteria? I'm not opposed to cracking open hibernate and modifying, but when I began to dig it, there seems to be layers upon layers of abstractions. I never found the the point where SQL is actually generated...

• c# application and configuration settings

  Hi, I never used Settings class before but I found some articles on CodeProject which I'm currently reading (for example http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/PropertiesSettings.aspx) but so far I didn't see how to save string array for getting it after application is started next time. For example my application has several FileSystemWatcher instances, with each instance several other directories are connected (for example one FSW instance is monitoring one directory for a change and when it happens it copies some file to several other directories), so I would have one string array with watched paths representing FSW instances, and string array for each of those paths, representing directories that are affected. My question is, what should I use (Settings class or something else), and how should I use that for storing application configuration that is variable number of string arrays? Emphasize is on something I could use very soon as I don't have too much time to make custom class (but would have to if I cannot find solution) or dig into some obscure hacks. Any tutorial link, code snippet would be very helpful. Thanks.

  Hi, I'm starting with PHP for dynamic web pages. I have some libaries written in ANSI C for getting/setting parameters and other proprietary stuff. I wonder, is there a simple solution to use a wrapper inside PHP to call this funtions? Is there a already existing class/library? What would be the best practice to do this on my own? I don't want do make calls to external applications and use stdin/stdout! Is there a simple example available?   Hi, Would QuickGraph be able to help me out with my requirements below? (a) want to model a graph of nodes and directional relationships between nodes - for example to model web pages/files linked under a URL, or modeling IT infrastructure and dependencies between hardware/software. The library would include methods such as * Node.GetDirectParents() //i.e. there could be more than one direct parent for a node * Node.GetRootParents() //i.e. traverse the tree to the top root parent(s) for the given node * Node.GetDirectChildren() * Node.GetAllChildren() (b) have to persist the data to a database - so it should support SQL Server and ideally SQLite as well. If it does support these requirement then I'd love to hear: any pointers to any parts of QuickGraph to dig into? what is the best concept re it's usage in terms of how to use database persistence - is it a simpler design to assume every search/method works directly on the database, or does QuickGraph support smarts to be able to work in memory and the "save" to database all changes at an appropriate point in time (e.g. like ADO.net does with DataTable etc) Thanks in advance

• Open Source CMS with linked sub-sections and users

  I work at a small college that wants to make "sites" for all of the academic departments (~30). I managed to talk them out of their original idea: 30 individual Wordpress installations. What a maintenance nightmare! What I'm looking for is a CMS (preferably Python or PHP, as those are my areas of expertise) that can automagically create a subsection (or subsite, whatever the appropriate vernacular) complete with user and a couple of headings based on a template. So, I could just click a button and have a new subsection for a new department complete with its own authorized user, and default subsection headings/menu/pages. Is this just wishful thinking? I don't mind getting my hands dirty (this would be the whole of my job duties), so what platform would be a good starting point for something like this? Open source is a must for me as I have literally no budget, and I'm probably going to have to dig pretty deep into the application.

• How to read tags out of m4a files in .NET?

  I've got some heavily modified code that ultimately came from the Windows Media SDK that works great for reading tags out of MP3 and WMV files. Somewhere along the line, Windows Media Player added support for .m4a files (was it in Windows 7?) but the Windows Media API doesn't seem to reflect that addition (or at least IWMMetadataEditor2::OpenEx pukes on an .m4a file). What would be some good C# code or links on how to dig meta data tags out of m4a files? (Google has come up dry on the C# front.) UPDATE AtomicParsley did indeed end being the best approach. Since that code is a command line tool however I ended up having to create a managed wrapper around some of its functionality in order to use in-process. It is posted on google code if anyone else needs such a thing.

• What to Learn: Rails 1.2.4 -> Rails 3

  I've recently convinced my management that our outdated version of Rails is slowing us down enough to warrant an upgrade. The approach we're taking is to start a fresh project with current technology rather than a painful upgrade. Our requirements for the project have changed and this will be much easier. The biggest problem is actually that my knowledge of Rails is out of date. I've dealt only with Rails 1.2.4 while the rest of the world has moved on long ago. What topics have I missed by being buried in my work instead of keeping up with the current Rails fashion? I'm hesitant to dig through blogs at random because I'm not sure how much has changed between the intervening versions of Rails. It's no use to learn Rails 2.1-2.3 specific stuff that is no longer useful for Rails 3.

• How to select text that is not marked up with CSS/jquery?

  I want to apply some CSS to text that I can't get marked up in span's. So for example: <li><a href="google.com">This is marked up</a> and this is not </li> I want to select, with either CSS (preferably) or jQuery this bit: and this is not. Maybe there's a method of selecting the entire li then excluding a, that seems like a bypass. The reason why I can't get it marked up is because I'm using WP and prefer to do that than dig into endless lines of php code. Thanks a lot for the help.
