• Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! • WIndows Emacs Keybinding

  I know this is not a Windows site, so my apologies. I use Ubuntu all day, every day, and have finally convinced my buddy to try it. He is on Windows 7, so we installed this: http://www.ourcomments.org/cgi-bin/emacsw32-dl-latest.pl . It seems to be working great, but when he hits C-p ( prev. line ) it is trying to print the page for some reason. So, 2 questions. Is there a way to make it stop that, and is there a way to just run it from the command line, or without all of the fancy mouse stuff? Essentially as --no-windows? Thanks!

• Ubuntu Software Centre Issue (unity 11.10) after broken sun-java6-jre package installation

  I have been installing software packages from USC and I am getting the following error message. Worked fine one minute then the message below.   Hello, why busybox does not display the throughput value at the end of a FTP session? Or it is some version specific ? i heard that some version of busybox displays Tput value at the end of data transfer but i know that specific version .. i typed the below command but i did not get any throughput status.. "busybox ftpget -v -u user -p Password ip abc.txt abc.txt" could anybody please let me know how can i get the tput value for UL/DL data transfer? Also how can we get the status of Tput value at the client side if we do busybox ftpput operation?? regds rocky

• Building boost 1.42 on FreeBSD 6.3

  Hi, i need to build mapnik on freebsd 6.3, but port marked as 'broken', so i forced to build it from source. With boost 1.41 (which is in ports) mapnik doesn't build. somewhere in internet, i found that mapnik successfully builded with boost 1.42. • 3D rotation matrices deform object while rotating

  I'm writing a small 3D renderer (using an orthographic projection right now). I've run into some trouble with my 3D rotation matrices. They seem to squeeze my 3D object (a box primitive) at certain angles. These are my 3 rotation matrices (Only rX and rZ are being used): var rX = new Matrix([ [1, 0, 0], [0, Math.cos(radiants), -Math.sin(radiants)], [0, Math.sin(radiants), Math.cos(radiants)] ]); var rY = new Matrix([ [Math.cos(radiants), 0, Math.sin(radiants)], [0, 1, 0], [-Math.sin(radiants), 0, Math.cos(radiants)] ]); var rZ = new Matrix([ [Math.cos(radiants), -Math.sin(radiants), 0], [Math.sin(radiants), Math.cos(radiants), 0], [0, 0, 1] ]); Before projecting the verticies I multiply them by rZ and rX like so: vert1.multiply(rZ); vert1.multiply(rX); vert2.multiply(rZ); vert2.multiply(rX); vert3.multiply(rZ); vert3.multiply(rX); The projection itself looks like this: bX = (pos.x + (vert1.x*scale)); bY = (pos.y + (vert1.z*scale)); Where "pos.x" and "pos.y" is an offset for centering the box on the screen. • XNA C# Rectangle Intersect Ball on a Square

  I made a Game like Peggle Deluxe using C# and XNA for lerning. I have 2 rectangles a ball and a square field. The ball gets shoot out with a cannon and if the Ball hits the Square the Square disapears and the Ball flys away.But the Ball doesent spring of realistically, it sometimes flys away in a different direction or gets stuck on the edge. • Router 2wire, Slackware desktop in DMZ mode, iptables policy aginst ping, but still pingable

  I'm in DMZ mode, so I'm firewalling myself, stealthy all ok, but I get faulty test results from Shields Up that there are pings. Yesterday I couldn't make a connection to game servers work, because ping block was enabled (on the router). I disabled it, but this persists even due to my firewall. What is the connection between me and my router in DMZ mode (for my machine, there is bunch of others too behind router firewall)? When it allows router affecting if I'm pingable or not and if router has setting not blocking ping, rules in my iptables for this scenario do not work. Please ignore commented rules, I do uncomment them as I want. • Problems with microphone and network

  Hello... very good day everybody! I'm having some problems regarding the Ubuntu 12.4.01 LTS. For this reason, cordially i ask everyone's help. Such problems can be summed up in network (01) and audio (02)! 01) I can not set a DSL network settings in the "upper bar" (on side the clock). When i create the connection, the system says that the cables modem are disconnected! I can only use the internet if i set up a connection at terminal through the command "pppoeconf". Follows the print screen of what i mentioned above:. http://i.imgur.com/8nTrF.png Obs.: Note that even after the connection "created", it does not appear there! 02) The sound is reproduced; however, can not be captured! I can not make recordings, obviously i can't use the microphone. I believe that something is giving interference or the settings are wrong! • Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router? • Second monitor not detected

  Hi I have two VGA monitors, my GPU is ATI PowerColor 6850 which has two DVI slots, I use adapters for both VGA monitors. If I connect any the two monitors in the first slot it will work right away (along the plugin confirmation sound). And if I connect any of both monitors to the second slot I won't get anything, nor a signal or confirmation sound. I also tried auto detecting via Catalyst Control Center and Windows Desktop Resolution. I have the latest drivers installed. EDIT: I found this on the Spec Description: Display Connectors DL-DVI-I/SL-DVI-D And in NewEgg: 2 x DVI (1 Single Link, 1 Dual Link) Could this have anything to do with my issue?

• Naming a class that processes orders

  I'm in the midst of refactoring a project. I've recently read Clean Code, and want to heed some of the advice within, with particular interest in Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). Currently, there's a class called OrderProcessor in the context of a manufacturing product order system. This class is currently performs the following routine every n minutes: check database for newly submitted + unprocessed orders (via a Data Layer class already, phew!) gather all the details of the orders mark them as in-process iterate through each to: perform some integrity checking call a web service on a 3rd party system to place the order check status return value of the web service for success/fail email somebody if web service returns fail constantly log to a text file on each operation or possible fail point I've started by breaking out this class into new classes like: OrderService - poor name. This is the one that wakes up every n minutes OrderGatherer - calls the DL to get the order from the database OrderIterator (? seems too forced or poorly named) - OrderPlacer - calls web service to place the order EmailSender Logger I'm struggling to find good names for each class, and implementing SRP in a reasonable way. How could this class be separated into new class with discrete responsibilities?

• GLES2.0 3D Android game performance and multi threading the update?

  I have profiled my mixed Java\C++ Android game and I got the following result: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8025882/PompiDev/AndroidProfile.png As you can see, the pink think is a C++ functions that updates the game. It does things like updating the logic but it mostly it generates a "request list" for rendering. The thing is, I generate DrawLists on C++ and then send them to Java to process and draw using GLES2.0. Since then I was able to improve update from 9ms down to about 7ms, but I would like to ask if I would benefit from multi threading the update? As I understand from that diagram is that the function that takes the most time is the one you see it's color on the timeline. So the pink area is taken mostly by update. The other area has MainOpenGL.Handle as it's main contributor(whch is my java function), but since it's not drawn to the top of the diagram I can conclude other things are happening at the same time that use the CPU? Or even GPU stuff that isn't shown in this diagram. I am not sure how the GPU works on this. Does it calculate stuff in parallel to the CPU? Or is it part of the CPU usage as in SoC? I am not sure. Anyway, in case GPU things DO happen in parallel to CPU, then I would guess that if I do this C++ Update in parallel to the thread that makes the OpenGL calls, I might make use of "dead CPU time" due to GPU stalling or maybe have the GPU calls getting processed earlier because it won't have to wait for Update to finish? How do you suggest to improve performance based on that? Thanks.

• Maximum burn speed keeps decreasing from Nero?

  I have a 16x DL DVD burner in my work machine (XP SP3). I'm using 8x TDK DVD+R media. The first dozen or so disks burned fine using Nero, but after that I started to coaster every disk. I asked Nero to calculate the maximum speed, and it calculated it at 4x. This worked for a few disks, then the same issues. I'm currently burning at 1.2x. I've since tried other brands and full 16x compatible disks, I can't get my burn speed to be recognized as any faster than what it's currently at. I've tried uninstalling Nero. I've tried burning directly in Windows, and also tested an MP3 CD in iTunes, and no luck. Any suggestions, short of reinstalling Windows, would be great!

• HP DL160 G6 memory PC3-10600R vs PC3-10600E

  I am using a HP DL 160 G6 server that according to specs takes PC3 Registered or Unbuffered. When I combine the two types of memory below the system will not POST. When I use just the first type of memory listed the system will POST. I have two pieces of HP memory that came with the server labeled PC3-10600E-9-10-E0 and then I have some Crucial memory labeled PC3-10600R-9-10-B0 I wager that the R means Registered memory and the E means ECC - then shouldn't the crucial memory boot with the system according to the HP specs? Or does the E mean it is Unbuffered and therefore I shouldn't mix and match as according to this HP memory config doc?

We use profile import from AD, from two domains: Mycompany.com and AM.MyCompany.Com I was looking at the log for the PEOPLE_DL_IMPORT Content source and it has many entries like: spsimport://?$$dl$$/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com/am.MyCompany.com It certainly doesn't look right. Is this normal? What can I do to remedy it ? Can I start over? There are users already in SP and some of them are in SP groups for permission purposes.

• BSOD after PC has been running for a while

  I'm having a problem where my computer is getting a blue screen. I have noticed that the BSOD happens after the PC has been running for about 2 days. The BSOD's seem to be an error with atikmpag.sys with an error code of 0x00000116. The problem started about a month ago.It has happened all five times that I left my computer on that long in the past month. Because my computer is a pre-built one from Dell, and I had upgraded the graphics card (at least a year ago) to a more demanding one, I replaced the stock 360W power supply that came with it. I replaced it with a more powerful, 680W one, because it seemed like the problem could be related to a lack of power supply wattage, but it didn't affect the problem at all. • ubuntu server in a vm, can't connect to internet

  I'm attemtping to host my own development web server in a virtual box guest, Ubuntu Server. I would like this virtual machine to be accessible from not only my home network, but outside the LAN as well. As such, I've set up a static IP (so I can later forward ports to this static IP.) My virtual box settings have this vm only using one adapter -- in bridged mode.   There seems to be a lot of questions / answers about doing the reverse, but not as much info for USB - DVD. Problem I created a bootable USB drive using YUMI. The USB drive is working great, and contains the following: Linux Mint 13 Linux Mint Debian Debian 6 Ubuntu 12.04.1 Fedora 17 A bit of a mix of DVD and Live versions. I have a spindle of DVD+R DL blank DVD's. I would like to create a bootable .iso from this USB drive so I can burn multiple copies of it to pass around to friends! I've created an iso using Folder2ISO, but it coastered my DVD because it wasn't bootable. I don't really want to waste a whole spindle! How would you go about doing such a thing?

• How to move a partition to the end in gparted?

  I can't find a way to move the partition /dev/sdb2 to the end, where 12GB are free http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3358699/permanent/gparted-sdb.png I can resize (expand) the partition, but not create (insert) any free space in front of it. How to do the trick? (There are 2 small black arrows on the top of the popup window in the screenshot at the side of the blue box that represents the 400 GB sdb2 - I can only move the right arrow to the right, which extends the size, but I cannot move the left arrow. When I enter something in the free space preceding box it is always reset to zero by the programm immediateley) I hope I explained this well enough, please feel free to ask for details. This is serious for me as I am expanding a live image. Maybe there is another solution with linux commandline tools ?

• Graphics card for dual 2560 x 1440 output

  As the title suggests I want to power two 2560 x 1440 monitors from one graphics card. I am just about to send my second graphics card back to Amazon, so before I purchase a 3rd incorrect card I thought I should get some advice. My latest card has dual DL-DVI output but only supports 2560 x 1440 on one output, the other maxes out at 1920 x 1080. Can graphics cards with two Dual Link DVI adapters (or alternately, one Dual Link DVI and one DisplayPort support the a full 2560 x 1440 on both monitors, or does that depend on the graphics hardware and not only the connectors?

• Server refuses to boot when Raid5 disk is disconnected - /root/ missing

  I recently set up a NAS server running a Debian OS (6.0.4) It contains 4 disks, 3 of them are in a Raid5 array, while the last one is used for the OS. To simulate a disk-failure I unplugged one of the raid disks, which resulted in the OS being unable to boot. It started the boot, recognized that md0 (the raid array) was running on 2/3 disks, and then threw a few errors. It was unable to find the following directories: /dev/root on /root, /dev on /root/dev, /sys on /root/sys, /proc on /root/proc It appears this happens regardless of which raid disk is removed.
