  • Integrate Cppcheck with Emacs

    Is it possible to integrate Cppcheck with Emacs in a more sophisticated way than simply calling the shell command on the current buffer? I would like Emacs to be able to parse Cppcheck's messages and treat them as messages from a compiler (similar to how compile works), such as using C-x ` to visit the targets of Cppcheck's messages. Here is some example output Cppcheck: $ cppcheck --enable=all test.cpp Checking test.cpp...   • egg git interface for emacs, commit message empty

    I'm using egg (emacs got git) as git interface in emacs. Whenever I try to achieve a commit --amend, I receive a "GIT-COMMIT-AMEND> Aborting commit due to empty commit message". This is what i do: C-u C-x v c Then the commit buffer appears, with the message of my previous commit. Then upon C-c C-c I get the message stated above: empty commit message. I think I've had this behaviour with regular commits (as in not amend) before, but can't remember or find how I solved it. I tried editing the message (adding a space somewhere). No work. I tried saving the buffer before committing, that wouldn't work either (since C-c C-c is not active in another buffer than the commit buffer). Any clue?

  • Wrapping variable width text in emacs lisp

    I am hacking up a tagging application for emacs. I have got a tag cloud/weighted list successfully displaying on a buffer, but i am running into a snag. I need to be able to properly word-wrap the buffer, but I haven't a clue where to start. The font I am using is a variable width font. On top of that, each tag is going to be in a different size, depending on how many times it shows up on the buffer. Finally, the window that displays the tagcloud could be in a window that is 200 pixels wide, or the full screen width. I really have no idea where to start.   • Is it worthwhile learning about Emacs? [closed]

    Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?

    Hi, I recently switched to Emacs and still finding my way through it. I code in C++ and was wondering what tools out there extend Emacs to support code browsing (finding a symbol etc), refactoring and code completion. I have heard of: cedet etags cscope But I'm so confused about what I need. Some places say that cedet provides all of the functionality but other places say that I need to invoke etags for cedet to work properly. Can someone clear this up for me? Do I need all of these tools?

  • I'm an emacs user. How do I learn vim?

    Most of the time, I use emacs. However, I've decided to try to learn vim. I'm happy with emacs, I just am trying to avoid having it turn into Maslow's Hammer. I've seen a few tutorials, but I have yet to see a good one written from the standpoint of someone coming from emacs. Is there any general advice that someone who's undergone this learning process before can give me? Most importantly, what are some concepts in Vim that may not be intuitive to me coming from an emacs background?

  • emacs auctex: can one auto-fill section labels?

    Hi all, I am currently using emacs and auctex to author my latex documents. This is, of course, fantastic. However, I would like to have emacs and/or auctex auto-fill the section label when using C-c C-e to make a new header. It should end up looking like this: \section{This is a section title} \label{sec:this-is-a-section-title} with the label for the header the same as the title, but with no spaces. I don't know lisp or elisp, and I'd have no idea where to start. If anyone could help that would be great!

  • Emacs shell output buffer height

    Hi , i have the following in my .emacs file(thanks to a SOer nikwin), which evaluates the current buffer content and displays the output in another buffer. (defun shell-compile () (interactive) (save-buffer) (shell-command (concat "python " (buffer-file-name)))) (add-hook 'python-mode-hook (lambda () (local-set-key (kbd "\C-c\C-c") 'shell-compile))) The problem is that the output window takes half the emacs screen. Is there any way to set the output windows's height to something smaller. I googled for 30mins or so and could not find anything that worked. Thanks in advance.

C-c C-s (mail-send) sends the message and marks the mail buffer unmodified, but leaves that buffer selected so that you can modify the message (perhaps with new recipients) and send it again. C-c C-c (mail-send-and-exit) sends and then deletes the window or switches to another buffer But both ( ctrl+c ctrl+s ) and (ctrl-c crtl+c) are not working ps:Thought it's not programming related. it's programmer environment related question-hoping it won't be closed :)

  • How to prevent Windows XP from stealing my input Ctrl-Space which is meant for Emacs

    I am learning and using Emacs. What I found annoying is that Ctrl-Space input will be stolen by Windows XP to switch the language bar instead of setting the mark in Emacs. The "language bar" is the native input languages selection such as Chinese keyboard other than English keyboard. Is there a way to temporarily prevent XP from stealing it? I have disabled the language bar from "Regional and language options" from Control Panel but the problem still exists. It doesn't happen on my Windows 2000 desktop at office but it happens on my work Windows XP laptop. Thank you very much.

    Hi all, I'm a bit new to using emacs for webdevelopment. I am using php-mode and i am happy with it. There is only one issue i have which causes me a lot of problems because of our company's coding style. When i have a function, e.g.: $instance = new Model('foo', 'bar'); And I want to indent it like this: $instance = new Model( 'foo', 'bar' ); Emacs does the following when i insert a newline before the first argument and indents it like this: $instance = new Model( 'foo', 'bar' ); Can anyone point me in a direction on how i can configure/change this? I'm getting a little exhausted using numerous IDE's for development (VS, XCode, Eclipse/Netbeans, and TextMate) and am looking for a replacement I can use on all the different machines I interact with.   • Assign multiple Emacs keybindings to a single command?

    I'm giving ErgoEmacs mode a try to see if I can use Emacs more comfortably. Some of its keybindings are fairly intuitive, but in many cases I don't want to outright replace the defaults. For example, in the context of ErgoEmacs' navigation shortcut structure, M-h makes sense as a replacement for C-a--but I want to be able to use both, not just M-h. I tried simply duplicating the commands: ;; Move to beginning/ending of line (defconst ergoemacs-move-beginning-of-line-key (kbd "C-a")) ; original (defconst ergoemacs-move-end-of-line-key (kbd "C-e")) ; original (defconst ergoemacs-move-beginning-of-line-key (kbd "M-h")) ; ergoemacs (defconst ergoemacs-move-end-of-line-key (kbd "M-H")) ; ergoemacs But Emacs simply overwrites the first keybinding with the second. What's the best way to address this?

  • How can one-handed work in Emacs be eased?

    My right hand is temporarily immobilized and I would like to do some minor work in Emacs, mostly in Org-mode, but also in AUCTeX. Are there ways to ease one-handed work in Emacs, such as some mode or particular work flow? For instance I noticed that for undoing it is easier to press C-x u than C-_ and that it is easier to mark text with methods involving C-Space than with combinations of S- and movement commands. I have found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391805/how-can-i-remain-productive-with-one-hand-completely-immobilized but that is not exactly what I am asking for. I want to ease whatever little time spent one-handed in Emacs (not in general) and this is also interesting for situations where there is no injury involved, such as when one hand is occupied. I do realize that I should avoid unnecessary strain. I am using GNU Emacs 23.3.1 in Ubuntu 11.04.

    hi I am looking for code beautifier for UNIX/emacs. I have looked at gnu indent, artistic style, however I need something a bit different. For example, I would like the following: for( int x= 0;; ++ x) if(x) break; to be formatted as for (int x = 0; ; ++x) if (x) break;. As far as I can tell artistic style does not do that (correct me if I am wrong). What can you recommend? Thanks edit both, artistic style and indent remove whitespace.   • Open a file with su/sudo inside Emacs

    Suppose I want to open a file in an existing Emacs session using su or sudo, without dropping down to a shell and doing sudoedit or sudo emacs. One way to do this is (require 'tramp) C-c C-f /sudo::/path/to/file but this requires an expensive round-trip through SSH. Is there a more direct way? [EDIT] @JBB is right. I want to be able to invoke su/sudo to save as well as open. It would be OK (but not ideal) to re-authorize when saving. What I'm looking for is variations of find-file and save-buffer that can be "piped" through su/sudo.
