  • Windows File Access Denied

    I seem to have a general problem with "access denied on Windows". It manifests itself every time if e.g: My bat file calls a compiler creates a file on disk My bat file renames a file But I also have files downloaded (FireFox) to Windows desktop where Windows is giving me "access denied" if I try delete the file. Tried disable AVG + make exception in AVG resident shield (I have tried checking with Task Manager + Winternals process explorer that it is not process running still running that should cause the locks.) Windows 7. My user account is an administrator. All files are created by same user account. The problem is recent, but some things I first noticed yesterday (when I started calling .bat files again which I have used for many years) I have tried: Starting e.g. Windows Explorer with "run as administrator", but that makes no difference right-click - properties - security and changes permissions/ownership (I also get "access denied" when trying this so this does not help) Here is a ascreenshot if I try change security of a "locked" file. (The problem here is the locking occurs continously every time the file is created) ! If I click on, it states I am not the owner? Which baffles me as I just created it. (Yes, through a .bat file calling executables that create the file. But all running under my administrator user account. Interestingly after having this dialog open, the file somehow sometimes suddenly seem to allow me delete it)

    Running Ubuntu 7.04. Samba is installed and running. Ubuntu server is connected to the internet thru an adsl modem. Rest of the network consists of windows-xp machines All xp machines can see the shared samba folders when internet access is on. If however , the internet access is interrupted , then the samba server cannot be viewed and no sharing occurs. Is samba folder sharing dependent on internet access ?

    I saw a question on MSDN’s SSIS forum the other day that went something like this: I’m loading data into a table from a flat file but I want to be able to store the name of that file as well. Is there a way of doing that? I don’t want to come across as disrespecting those who took the time to reply but there was a few answers along the lines of “loop over the files using a For Each, store the file name in a variable yadda yadda yadda” when in fact there is a much much simpler way of accomplishing this; it just happens to be a little hidden away as I shall now explain! The Flat File Source Adapter has a property called FileNameColumnName which for some reason it isn’t exposed through the Flat File Source editor, it is however exposed via the Advanced Properties: You’ll see in the screenshot above that I have set FileNameColumnName=“Filename” (it doesn’t matter what name you use, anything except a non-zero string will work). What this will do is create a new column in our dataflow called “Filename” that contains, unsurprisingly, the name of the file from which the row was sourced. All very simple. This is particularly useful if you are extracting data from multiple files using the MultiFlatFile Connection Manager as it allows you to differentiate between data from each of the files as you can see in the following screenshot: So there you have it, the FileNameColumnName property; a little known secret of SSIS.   • How to distinguish doc, ppt, xls files, without looking at file extension

    So I was wondering how would you differentiate ppt, xls and doc files from each other in linux regardless of extensions. I tried 'file' but from the looks of it, all of MSOffice files are categorized under the same file type. Similarly I'm having trouble with docx, xlsx and pptx files, since they're essentially all zip files containing a bunch of xml. I also tried a python script importing the magic module, but no go. I'm trying to identify the actual file for a sandbox analysis. And for this specific purpose I need to find the actual file type in order to run it in the sandbox vm (the Windows vm runs everything by extension). Let's say my sample file is labeled as try.exe, but in reality it's just a doc file. My script will rename it as try.exe.doc, which would work fine for doc files. But since linux identifies all MSOffice files as simple DOC files then there's no way to identify ppt or xls files. As a result the sandbox wont' analyze the sample correctly.

    I have little to no experience in writing batch files. I need to write one that copies a file to a new folder and renames it At the moment, my batch file consists of only this command: COPY ABC.PDF \\Documents As you can see, it only copies the file ABC.pdf to the network folder 'Documents'. However i need to change this so it renames the file ABCxxx.pdf, where xxx is a text variable that i would like to set somewhere in the batch file. For example, if xxx = "_Draft", then file would be renamed ABC_Draft.pdf after it is copied. Thanks

    Hi, I am in a situation where multiple threads reading the same huge file with mutliple file pointers to same file. The file will have atleast 1 million lines. Eachline's length varies from 500 characters to 1500 characters. There won't "write" operations on the file. Each thread will start reading the same file from different lines. Which is the efficient way..? Using the Python's linecache or normal readline() or is there anyother effient way?

  • MS Access: Why is ADODB.Recordset.BatchUpdate so much slower than Application.ImportXML?

    I'm trying to run the code below to insert a whole lot of records (from a file with a weird file format) into my Access 2003 database from VBA. After many, many experiments, this code is the fastest I've been able to come up with: it does 10000 records in about 15 seconds on my machine. At least 14.5 of those seconds (ie. almost all the time) is in the single call to UpdateBatch. I've read elsewhere that the JET engine doesn't support UpdateBatch. So maybe there's a better way to do it. Now, I would just think the JET engine is plain slow, but that can't be it. After generating the 'testy' table with the code below, I right clicked it, picked Export, and saved it as XML. Then I right clicked, picked Import, and reloaded the XML. Total time to import the XML file? Less than one second, ie. at least 15x faster. Surely there's an efficient way to insert data into Access that doesn't require writing a temp file? If "tblABC" is in the same database as the code then the problem does not occur. Hi, We have recently upgraded to Office 2007. We have a method in which we have an open recordset (DAO). We then call another sub (UpdatingSub below) that executes SQL. This method has its own error handler. If error 3381 is encountered then the recordset in the calling method becomes "unset" and we get error 3420 'Object invalid or no longer set'. Other errors in UpdatingSub do not cause the same problem. This code works fine in Access 2003.   • best practices question: How to save a collection of images and a java object in a single file? File

    Hi all, I am making a java program that has a collection of flash-card like objects. I store the objects in a jtree composed of defaultmutabletreenodes. Each node has a user object attached to it with has a few string/native data type parameters. However, i also want each of these objects to have an image (typical formats, jpg, png etc). I would like to be able to store all of this information, including the images and the tree data to the disk in a single file so the file can be transferred between users and the entire tree, including the images and parameters for each object, can be reconstructed. I had not approached a problem like this before so I was not sure what the best practices were. I found XLMEncoder (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/beans/XMLEncoder.html) to be a very effective way of storing my tree and the native data type information. However I couldn't figure out how to save the image data itself inside of the XML file, and I'm not sure it is possible since the data is binary (so restricted characters would be invalid). My next thought was to associate a hash string instead of an image within each user object, and then gzip together all of the images, with the hash strings as the names and the XMLencoded tree in the same compmressed file. That seemed really contrived though. Does anyone know a good approach for this type of issue? THanks! Thanks!

    Hi, I've scavenged on every single topic on this forum to try and find an answer before I posted this. Most people say you should simply use SWFUpload, some others mention Activex, and it keeps going. I know this is do-able, as Google does it with gMail when you try to upload a file that's bigger than 25mb, or executable. My question is, how can I determine the file size and mime-type before the file actually hits my server. I primarily thought it was an impossible task, but Google proves me wrong. Could anyone give me a definitive answer on how to accomplish such task? Thanks

    I am trying to write to a folder that is located on my C:\ drive. I keep getting the error of : Could not find a part of the path .. etc My filepath looks basically like this : C:\WebRoot\ManagedFiles\folder\thumbs\5c27a312-343e-4bdf-b294-0d599330c42d\Image\lighthouse.jpg And I am writing to it like so : using (MemoryStream memoryStream = new MemoryStream()) { thumbImage.Save(memoryStream, ImageFormat.Jpeg); using (FileStream diskCacheStream = new FileStream(cachePath, FileMode.CreateNew)) { memoryStream.WriteTo(diskCacheStream); } memoryStream.WriteTo(context.Response.OutputStream); } Don't worry too much about the memory stream. It is just outputting it (After I save it). Since I am creating a file, I am a bit perplexed as to why it cannot find the file (Shouldn't it just write to where I tell it to, regardless?). The strange thing is, It has no issue when I'm testing it above using File.Exists. Obviously that is returning false, But it means that atleast my Filepath is semi legit. Any help is much appreciated.

    I'm trying to compile a C++ file with some includes. My main file (well I didn't make it hdf5_getters includes a file which includes the file hdf5.h, also not my design but it's a downloaded library. Every time I try to compile it I get the error message that the file hdf5.h does not exist while it clearly does. I started reading on the internet and people say it can happen because it's a 32bit binary running on a 64bit architecture. But I'm running a 32bit Ubuntu so that can't be it...     Hi, We're needing to provide remote (read/write) access to a number of files on our network to several users (some technical, some non-technical) who will be running Windows. The non technical users will need to be able to access their files in an easy to use manner. From previous experience, we could do this with: (some sort of) VPN SSH and something like Dokan (i've only previously done this on linux with sshfs) WebDav FTP VPN and SSH access are more open that we need at present, so I'm leaning towards webdav, however I only have limited experience of it (setting up an SVN server several years ago), but my understanding is that users can access it through windows explorer. FTP I haven't had much experience of, as I've always used SFTP via ssh - but i'd imagine we could make this work in a similar way to ssh. So my question is - have I missed any obvious candidates for this task, or if webdav is (or isn't) suitable what are the security implications of using it for this (obviously https will be used for the transfers, etc).     After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow).     When viewing a jpg or mp3 in Windows Explorer, the bottom pane shows metadata from the media file. Furthermore, for video and picture, the icon is shown as a preview of the media. Is there a way to add this kind of functionality to windows for custom file types that aren't supported by default in windows? Is there a certain sort of plugin or extension that must be written? If so, how is it implemented? Thank you.

My processing would be easier if I could use the File.ReadAllLines method but I'm not sure what is the maximum size of the file that could be read with this method without reading by chunks.   • How to use WPA2 client mode in the Linux-based Cisco WAP4410N access point

    I have a Cisco WAP4410N access point that I want to use as a client to connect to a WPA2 wireless network (for WLAN service monitoring purposes). Supposedly this access point supports a "Wireless Client/Repeater" mode that allows to do this. The Repeater function is optional (I have that box unchecked so that nobody can connect to this access point wirelessly). I have verified through SSH that the access point gets configured as a client and not as a Master. But it never associates to the SSID I ask it to. This is what iwconfig shows: ath04 IEEE 802.11ng ESSID:"myownssid" Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power:14 dBm Sensitivity=1/3 Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=0/94 Signal level=161/162 Noise level=161/161 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 Although I've never done this from the command line, I suppose I could use wpa_supplicant or wpa_client to associate it, but I don't know how to do that without editing configuration files and the filesystem is readonly. Besides, I would have to run those commands manually after every reboot. I'd like to know how to do this the Cisco way, if possible. If not, any trick to make this work would be useful. Edit: This is with the latest firmware, 2.0.4.2. And I found that not all of the filesystem is readonly, since /var and /tmp are mounted with type ramfs.

  • Grant HTTP access based on unix user group

    Is it possible to grant network access or HTTP access based on a user's group? At my company we want to set up an internal composer server using Satis to manage packages for the projects we write (e.g. on repository.mycompany.com), with the packages themselves in our SVN server (svn.mycompany.com). We have several webservers with many different users on them. Some users should be able to reach the composer and SVN server. Some should not. Users that should be able to reach these servers all belong to the same group. How can I set up Apache on the Composer and SVN server to only grant access to those users in that group? Alternatively, can I set up the webservers in such a way that only users from that group are able to make a connection to our Composer and SVN servers? The best thing we have come up with so far is using SSL client certificates. We simply place a client certificate on all servers which can be used to access Composer and SVN. Only the right usergroup will have read access to the certificate. A bit clunky but it may work. But I'm looking for something better.

  • Cannot access an application folder in Program files

    I recently installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit on a new machine. I installed an application using a ClickOnce installer. The application runs fine, but I cannot access the application folder it created in c:\Program files (x86). It bombs with access denied. I try to view the properties on the folder and it takes about 1 minute to display (other folders take 1 second). It says I cannot view any information because I'm not the owner. It doesn't say who the current owner is (instead - Unable to display current owner.) but says I can take ownership. When I try it fails again with Access Denied, even though I have administrative permissions. Why can't I access this folder nor take ownership?

  • Recommendation on remote access setup for accessing customer systems

    I'm looking for a product recommendation (open or commercial) that will allow remote access to customer sites for tech support purposes. We need to be able to gain access to help troubleshoot problems on servers. Currently end up using anything from RDP on public IP, to various VPNs that clients happen to have, to webex-type sessions that require lots of interaction from both sides to get things working. This often means a problem that could take 10 minutes to solve takes an extra 30+ minutes messing around trying to get a connection up. There are multiple customer sites, which should NOT have access to each other. At each site, there is anywhere from 1 to 8 servers (Windows 2003 or 2008) that need to be accessed. Support connection to machines even if they're behind a firewall/router with no public IP Be able to selectively allow/deny access from customer site. Customer site should not be able to connect outbound to anywhere else (our systems, or other customer sites) Support multiple users from our end If not a VPN connection (where RDP could be used over top), should support: Remote desktop access, including copy/paste File transfers Preferably would have some way to list all remote systems, showing online/offline. Anyone have any suggestions?
