  • New Oracle.com global navigation

    - by tim.bonnemann
    This is a guest post by Michal Kopec, Senior User Experience Architect her at Oracle Marketing Brand and Creative. We have just refreshed the Oracle.com global navigation to serve you better with Oracle related information and news. Highlights 1. Updated, user-oriented and business information balanced navigational categories. Say hello to the new categories: Downloads, Education and Oracle Technology Network. Oracle Partner Network navigation received a facelift too. 2. Brand new flyout based navigation - mouse over Partners for instance - providing both a high level content overview as well as shortcut links for most popular website destinations 3. Introducing audience based - I'm a... - and - I want to... - task-based navigation. Now you can navigate based on who you are or what is you want to accomplish. Please note this is an initial step - we want to build out those based on your opinions and feedback. 4. Adjusted Oracle Technology Network horizontal navigation to match Oracle.com. Oracle Technology Network users can now benefit from OTN content being accessible from anywhere during their Oracle.com and OTN visits of course :) 5. Last but not least - we applied the same refreshed global navigation to a couple of country sites - starting with Oracle Brazil and Oracle China. More to come. The project internal code name is Mosaic. It is an effort to provide you with unified user and brand experience during your Oracle websites visit. Every time you hear Mosaic expect great things to happen. With that - please let us know what you think. We value your opinion.

  • Where to store global enterprise properties?

    - by shylynx
    I'm faced with a crowd of java applications, which need different global enterprise wide properties for operation, for example: hostname of the central RDBMS, hostname and location of the central self-service portal, host location of central LDAP, host location of central mail server etc. Formally we build each application with a properties file, where all this properties are definied. But that's a very bad solution, because if the hostname of the mail server changes, we need to change the properties files for each application and deploy all applications again. Our idea is to centralize this properties, so that each application can ask for each property at runtime, for example: Idea: Put the properties file to an easy accessible file share. So if we need to change a property, each application uses the new properties. Idea: Put the properties to database. Main disadvantage: we need a dependency to database client libraries for each application. Idea: Put all applications into one big application server, that provides system properties for each application. Main disadvantage: needs deployment of each application to one application server. But that isn't a realistic scenario. Idea: Webservice that provides global enterprise wide properties. Main disadvantage: not very secure, because some properties are passwords or user credentials. What other alternatives are recommended? What is state of the art?

  • How can I access variables outside of current scope in javascript?

    - by sekmet64
    I'm writing some application in javascript and cannot figure it out how to access the variables declared in my function, inside this jquery parse. Inside I can access global variables, but I don't really want to create global vars for these values. Basically I want to extract file names from an xml document in the simulationFiles variable. I check if the node attribute is equal with the simName and extract the two strings inside the xml elements, that part I think it's working. How can I extract those xml elements and append them to local variables? function CsvReader(simName) { this.initFileName = "somepath"; this.eventsFileName = "somepath"; $(simulationFiles).find('simulation').each(function() { if ($(this).attr("name") == simName) { initFileName += $(this).find("init").text(); eventsFileName += $(this).find("events").text(); } }); }

  • How to connect AD Explorer from Sysinternals to Global Catalog

    - by Oliver
    I'm using the sysinternals AD Explorer quite frequently to search and inspect an Active Directory without any big problems. But now i'd like to connect not only to a single AD Server. Instead i like to inspect the global catalog. If i enter within the AD Explorer connect dialog only the dns name of the machine (e.g. dns.to.domain.controller) that is serving the global catalog i only receive the concrete domain for which it is responsible, but not the whole forest (that's normal behaviour and expected by me). If i'm going to add the default port number (3268) for the global catalog in the form dns.to.domain.controller:3268 AD Explorer will simply crash without any further message. The global catalog itself works as expected under the given name and port number, cause our apache server use exactly this address and port number to authenticate some users. So any hints or tips to access the global catalog out of AD Explorer? Or there are any other nice tools like AD Explorer out there that doesn't have any problems to access the global catalog?

  • Detecting Idle Time with Global Mouse and Keyboard Hooks in WPF

    - by jdanforth
    Years and years ago I wrote this blog post about detecting if the user was idle or active at the keyboard (and mouse) using a global hook. Well that code was for .NET 2.0 and Windows Forms and for some reason I wanted to try the same in WPF and noticed that a few things around the keyboard and mouse hooks didn’t work as expected in the WPF environment. So I had to change a few things and here’s the code for it, working in .NET 4. I took the liberty and refactored a few things while at it and here’s the code now. I’m sure I will need it in the far future as well. using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; namespace Irm.Tim.Snapper.Util { public class ClientIdleHandler : IDisposable { public bool IsActive { get; set; } int _hHookKbd; int _hHookMouse; public delegate int HookProc(int nCode, IntPtr wParam, IntPtr lParam); public event HookProc MouseHookProcedure; public event HookProc KbdHookProcedure; //Use this function to install thread-specific hook. [DllImport("user32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int SetWindowsHookEx(int idHook, HookProc lpfn, IntPtr hInstance, int threadId); //Call this function to uninstall the hook. [DllImport("user32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern bool UnhookWindowsHookEx(int idHook); //Use this function to pass the hook information to next hook procedure in chain. [DllImport("user32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int CallNextHookEx(int idHook, int nCode, IntPtr wParam, IntPtr lParam); //Use this hook to get the module handle, needed for WPF environment [DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public static extern IntPtr GetModuleHandle(string lpModuleName); public enum HookType : int { GlobalKeyboard = 13, GlobalMouse = 14 } public int MouseHookProc(int nCode, IntPtr wParam, IntPtr lParam) { //user is active, at least with the mouse IsActive = true; Debug.Print("Mouse active"); //just return the next hook return CallNextHookEx(_hHookMouse, nCode, wParam, lParam); } public int KbdHookProc(int nCode, IntPtr wParam, IntPtr lParam) { //user is active, at least with the keyboard IsActive = true; Debug.Print("Keyboard active"); //just return the next hook return CallNextHookEx(_hHookKbd, nCode, wParam, lParam); } public void Start() { using (var currentProcess = Process.GetCurrentProcess()) using (var mainModule = currentProcess.MainModule) { if (_hHookMouse == 0) { // Create an instance of HookProc. MouseHookProcedure = new HookProc(MouseHookProc); // Create an instance of HookProc. KbdHookProcedure = new HookProc(KbdHookProc); //register a global hook _hHookMouse = SetWindowsHookEx((int)HookType.GlobalMouse, MouseHookProcedure, GetModuleHandle(mainModule.ModuleName), 0); if (_hHookMouse == 0) { Close(); throw new ApplicationException("SetWindowsHookEx() failed for the mouse"); } } if (_hHookKbd == 0) { //register a global hook _hHookKbd = SetWindowsHookEx((int)HookType.GlobalKeyboard, KbdHookProcedure, GetModuleHandle(mainModule.ModuleName), 0); if (_hHookKbd == 0) { Close(); throw new ApplicationException("SetWindowsHookEx() failed for the keyboard"); } } } } public void Close() { if (_hHookMouse != 0) { bool ret = UnhookWindowsHookEx(_hHookMouse); if (ret == false) { throw new ApplicationException("UnhookWindowsHookEx() failed for the mouse"); } _hHookMouse = 0; } if (_hHookKbd != 0) { bool ret = UnhookWindowsHookEx(_hHookKbd); if (ret == false) { throw new ApplicationException("UnhookWindowsHookEx() failed for the keyboard"); } _hHookKbd = 0; } } #region IDisposable Members public void Dispose() { if (_hHookMouse != 0 || _hHookKbd != 0) Close(); } #endregion } } The way you use it is quite simple, for example in a WPF application with a simple Window and a TextBlock: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication2.MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525"> <Grid> <TextBlock Name="IdleTextBox"/> </Grid> </Window> And in the code behind we wire up the ClientIdleHandler and a DispatcherTimer that ticks every second: public partial class MainWindow : Window { private DispatcherTimer _dispatcherTimer; private ClientIdleHandler _clientIdleHandler; public MainWindow() { InitializeComponent(); } private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //start client idle hook _clientIdleHandler = new ClientIdleHandler(); _clientIdleHandler.Start(); //start timer _dispatcherTimer = new DispatcherTimer(); _dispatcherTimer.Tick += TimerTick; _dispatcherTimer.Interval = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 1); _dispatcherTimer.Start(); } private void TimerTick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (_clientIdleHandler.IsActive) { IdleTextBox.Text = "Active"; //reset IsActive flag _clientIdleHandler.IsActive = false; } else IdleTextBox.Text = "Idle"; } } Remember to reset the ClientIdleHandle IsActive flag after a check.

  • Can an LDAP query on AD provide the netbios domain name for a single account when using the Global Catalog?

    - by Kirk Liemohn
    I am using ADSI Edit to look at LDAP properties of a single user account in AD. I see properties such as userPrincipalName, but I do not see one for the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or the netbios domain name. We will be setting up the Global Catalog (GC) to give us LDAP access to multiple domains and through configuration in an application we map LDAP properties to user profile properties within the application. With typical AD the FQDN and netbios domain name are the same for all users, but with the GC involved we need this additional information. We really only need the netbios domain name (the FQDN is not good enough). Maybe there is a LDAP query that can be done to request this information from a more top-level object in AD?

  • Validate HAML from ActiveRecord: scope/controller/helpers for link_to etc?

    - by Chris Boyle
    I like HAML. So much, in fact, that in my first Rails app, which is the usual blog/CMS thing, I want to render the body of my Page model using HAML. So here is app/views/pages/_body.html.haml: .entry-content= Haml::Engine.new(body, :format => :html5).render ...and it works (yay, recursion). What I'd like to do is validate the HAML in the body when creating or updating a Page. I can almost do that, but I'm stuck on the scope argument to render. I have this in app/models/page.rb: validates_each :body do |record, attr, value| begin Haml::Engine.new(value, :format => :html5).render(record) rescue Exception => e record.errors.add attr, "line #{(e.respond_to? :line) && e.line || 'unknown'}: #{e.message}" end end You can see I'm passing record, which is a Page, but even that doesn't have a controller, and in particular doesn't have any helpers like link_to, so as soon as a Page uses any of that it's going to fail to validate even when it would actually render just fine. So I guess I need a controller as scope for this, but accessing that from here in the model (where the validator is) is a big MVC no-no, and as such I don't think Rails gives me a way to do it. (I mean, I suppose I could stash a controller in some singleton somewhere or something, but... excuse me while I throw up.) What's the least ugly way to properly validate HAML in an ActiveRecord validator?

  • How can I write classes that don't rely on "global" variables?

    - by Joel
    When I took my first programming course in university, we were taught that global variables were evil & should be avoided at all cost (since you can quickly develop confusing and unmaintainable code). The following year, we were taught object oriented programming, and how to create modular code using classes. I find that whenever I work with OOP, I use my classes' private variables as global variables, i.e., they can be (and are) read and modified by any function within the class. This isn't really sitting right with me, as it seems to introduce the same problems global variables had in languages like C. So I guess my question is, how do I stop writing classes with "global" variables? Would it make more sense to pretend I'm writing in a functional language? By this I mean having all functions take parameters & return values instead of directly modifying class variables. If I need to set any fields, I can just take the output of the function and assign it instead of having the function do it directly. This seems like it might make more maintainable code, at least for larger classes. What's common practice? Thanks!

  • Is it possible to run an ng-switch directly on a select > option

    - by Asok
    Has anyone been able to run an ng-switch on a <select> -> <option> tag, like so?: <select ng-model="form.permitLocality" ng-switch on="localityTypeRadio"> <option ng-switch-when="County" ng-repeat="county in countyList"> {{ county.name }} </option> <option ng-switch-when="City" ng-repeat="city in cityList"> {{ city.name }} </option> <option ng-switch-when="Town" ng-repeat="town in townList"> {{ town.name }} </option> </select> I am not getting any errors or any options (all values verified), I just thought it would save me a couple lines and thought I'd try it. Here is my selector, in case you're curious (value verified): <label class="radio inline"> <input type="radio" name="localityTypeRadio" ng-model="localityTypeRadio" value="County"> County </label> <label class="radio inline"> <input type="radio" name="localityTypeRadio" ng-model="localityTypeRadio" value="City"> City </label> <label class="radio inline"> <input type="radio" name="localityTypeRadio" ng-model="localityTypeRadio" value="Town"> Town </label> This is not a big deal, just didn't know if this was a limitation / not recommended with an ng-switch EDIT I was mistaken when I initially said that nothing was happening (browser caching), there appears to be the correct number of options but the source code shows nothing but white space: <select ng-model="form.permitLocality" class="input-block-level ng-pristine ng-valid" ng-switch="" on="localityTypeRadio" ng-hide="form.permitLocality.length"><option value="? string: ?"></option> <!--
