• Speed-up of readonly MyISAM table

  We have a large MyISAM table that is used to archive old data. This archiving is performed every month, and except from these occasions data is never written to the table. Is there anyway to "tell" MySQL that this table is read-only, so that MySQL might optimize the performance of reads from this table? I've looked at the MEMORY storage engine, but the problem is that this table is so large that it would take a large portion of the servers memory, which I don't want. Hope my question is clear enough, I'm a novice when it comes to db administration so any input or suggestions are welcome.

  Recently I have noticed a number of questions on SO that look something like this: I am writing a small program to keep a list of the songs that I keep on my ipod. I'm thinking about writing it as a 3-tier MVC Ruby on Rails web application with TDD, DDD and IOC, using a factory pattern to create the classes and a singleton to store my application settings. Do you think I'm taking the right approach? Do you think that we're handing novice programmers a very sharp knife and telling them, "Don't cut yourself with this"? NOTE: Despite the humorous tone, this is a serious (and programming-related) question.

• performing a Http request on android

  Hi, Could someone provide the basic code to use if I want to perform a http request on android to the address "address" with the string "message" ? Also I'd like to check the server response and perform some actions if the right conditions meet , but I ' m unsure of how and when the server send back the response . My guess is that the response is gotten in a blocking function, or in an asynchronous function . Could you provide code or information on this as well ? • C++ memory management of reference types

  Hello, I'm still a fairly novice programmer and I have a question about c++ memory management with refence types. First of all, my understanding of reference types: A pointer is put on the stack and the actual data that the pointer points to is created and placed on the heap. Standard arrays and user defined classes are refence types. Is this correct? Second, my main question is do c and c++'s memory management mechanisms (malloc, free and new, delete) always handle this properly and free the memory that a class or array is pointing to? Does everything still work if those pointers get reassigned somehow to other objects of the same size/type on the heap? What if a class has a pointer member that points to another object? I am assuming that delete/freeing the class object doesn't free what it's member pointer points to, is that correct? Thanks all! -R

• MySQL: Limit output according to associated ID

  So here's my situation. I have a books table and authors table. An author can have many books... In my authors page view, the user (logged in) can click an author in a tabled row and be directed to a page displaying the author's books (collected like this URI format: viewauthorbooks.php?author_id=23), very straight forward... However, in my query, I need to display the books for the author only, and not all books stored in the books table (as i currently have!) As I am a complete novice, I used the most simple query of: SELECT * FROM tasks_tb This returns the books for me, but returns every single value (book) in the database, and not ones associated with the selected author. And when I click a different author the same books are displayed for them...I think everyone gets what I'm trying to achieve, I just don't know how to perform the query. I'm guessing that I need to start using more advanced query clauses like INNER JOIN etc. Anyone care to help me out :)

• iPhone simulator app crashes when appending a string

  Hi, I'm a complete novice, so I'm probably missing something really easy, but I can't get my string appending to work. I add the 3rd character to typedDigit & it crashes - the method is called fine and typedDigit will get to 2 characters long. I think everything is declared properly in the header file. • Read XML from an XDocument with silverlight

  Hi I have managed to load an XDocument with xml data from this link http://go.yr.no/go/e/main/http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Telemark/Sauherad/Gvarv/forecast.xml. I am using C# and .Net in Blend and producing a web app (ie some of the normal .Net functions is not included in the silverlight plugin). I have researched this a lot but can not figure out: how to put the "text" in the link node in a string variable and how to all put the "-11" from ? in a array and link it to the "time from"? • Css Multiple background-color

  I'm a novice in Css and it's difficult to search for this specific case on the internet, so I post a question here. I'm working on an existing code base and I see something like this. li { background-color: #000 \9; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); } I don't understand the meaning of \9.   In a related question, I asked about Web Development. I came across something called OpenLaszlo yesterday and thought it looked interesting for doing some website development. The site has a bunch of good information on it and they've got some nice tutorials and such, but being a total novice (as far as web development goes), I'm wondering whether anyone here would recommend this. As I stated in my other question, this is a new world for me and there are a lot of directions I could go. Can you compare/contrast this and other web development you've done? • Can Spring understand @Inject replacing Weld as a JSR-299 implementation?

  I have noticed from several web pages that apparently Spring 3.0 supports @Inject from JSR-330. As we would really like to use JSR-299 syntax for dependency injection in our libraries for both web apps and stand-alone applications, and have alternatives to Weld, it would be nice if Spring could do this. Being a novice to Spring, I tried downloading the Spring Framework distribution and put all jars on the Eclipse build path. No Inject annotation so my existing test project using Weld did not compile. Can this be done with Spring? What do I need to do to get it running? (I am aware that Guice eventually will support this too. It is only in SVN for now, and if there is an official Spring release which can, that would be better.)

  First I am a complete novice and need answers in plain and simple terms. I am trying to get the users manual for my Samsung galaxy s4 phone. Samsung "help" sent me a link to click but when I received it it was in Spanish tho the doc I'd said "english". The Samsung support line timed me out because I couldn't type fast enough when I told them I received it in Spanish. I explored the translator and didn't see how to translate a doc. Asked Google how to get the manual they gave a different doc I'd and sent it to clipboards. How can I read it? Now what? Tried to send this message and asking me for a tag and I have no idea what that means so I just clicked one. That's why I need the manual so desperately. Unfortunately, I'm using a library which have a method that accepts a ByteBuffer object and throws when I try to use it: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException: Unable to retrieve native address from ByteBuffer object Is it because I'm not using a non-direct buffer? edit: There's not a lot of my code there. The library I'm using is jNetPcap, and I'm trying to dump a packet to file. My code takes an existing packet, and extract a ByteBuffer out of it: byte[] bytes = m_packet.getByteArray(0, m_packet.size()); ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.wrap(bytes); Then it calls on of the dump methods of jNetPcap that takes a ByteBuffer.

• How can I output the fitted values?

  Sorry if this is a novice question, but I don't understand it. I am fitting a sigmoid curve to my data with glm(). This works, I can plot the output and I see a nice sigmoid curve. However, how do I get R to return the final values it has fit? • Random numbers from binomial distribution

  I need to generate quickly lots of random numbers from binomial distributions for dramatically different trial sizes (most, however, will be small). I was hoping not to have to code an algorithm by hand (see, e.g., this related discussion from November), because I'm a novice programmer and don't like reinventing wheels. It appears Boost does not supply a generator for binomially distributed variates, but TR1 and GSL do. Is there a good reason to choose one over the other, or is it better that I write something customized to my situation? I don't know if this makes sense, but I'll alternate between generating numbers from uniform distributions and binomial distributions throughout the program, and I'd like for them to share the same seed and to minimize overhead. I'd love some advice or examples for what I should be considering.

• adding org.springframework.test package to spring-2.5.6-SEC01.jar in netbeans

  This is probably very simple, however I can't get this to work. I want to use AbstractDependencyInjectionSpringContextTest class which is in org.springframework.test package. This package is not included in Netbeans' spring library, so I want to add it. So what I have tried so far is: copy and paste "test" directory (downloaded from spring) into the Netbeans' spring-2.5.6-SEC01.jar file (copy it to org.springframework directory in that jar so I can use org.springframework.test to import it). If I go to project/libraries in Netbeans it is there, but when I try to import org.springframework.test.*; the autocomplition doesn't give me the option to choose test directory from org.soringframework package. create a new library which points to "test" directory and add it to the project- as there is no any jar file in "test" I'm not sure what path should I use to import it. I'm pretty sure this is something very simple but I'm still a novice and can't figure this out.

  First of all apologies for the below question. Am from a Testing background for the past 8 years and very novice to Jmeter. I went through the Jmeter site, and ran a sample recording using the jmeter.apache.org site and it went fine. I want to test my knowledge and understanding. So, I did the following way. Created a thread group. Added a config element HTTP Default Requests with server name as mail.google.com. Added a Sampler as HTTP request, set the METHOD to POST and gave the username and password, and i ran the test. When i see the Results Viewer, i could see the login page of gmail, I need to know how to pass my username and password and simulate the clicking of Submit button and getting the next page. Please help, am very new and will really appreciate if it's explained as simple as possible.

• Sum up values in SQL once all values are available

  I have events flowing into a MySQL database and I need to group and sum the events to transactions and store away into another table. That is determined by the event with the code e (b for the beginning, e for the end and i for varying amount of intermediates). Being a novice in SQL, how could I implement the requirement for the existance of the end code before the summing?
