  I use a Windows 7 machine to share my internet connection, but the one network interface which are connected to my local network is marked as "Unidentified network", the sharing works well anyway but because the interface can't be chosen as Home network i can't use the HomeGroup features etc. Do you know which requirements an interface has meet to identify a network in Windows 7?

• Hide Win 8.1 "tip" about "Switch between apps"?

  I've just installed Win8.1 and I'm trying to set up IIS. When I open Add remove programs from the start menu I get the pc-settings app. In the pc-settings app I get a "tooltip" or whatever we should call it, that hints me to "Switch between apps" by swiping from the edge. Well fine, but I don't want to do that right now, and I can't get that tip to dissapear. The tip lingers on even into Visual Studio, covering my code. I can't swipe because I don't have a touch screen, and also I'm on a multimonitor system that shows this tip in the middle of the screen. Here's a screenshot for you, where I put the web browser slightly over the left monitor. So, besides rebooting, how am I supposed to kill this very informative tip? EDIT When I kill the app by alt-f4 it dissapears right until I open the settings app again, then it's back. What I'm asking about is how to dismiss items like this in general.

• grub2 error: out of disk

  I'm trying to make a 250G USB hard disk Ubuntu-bootable on a Compaq nc6220 laptop. I've removed all other disks, so /dev/sda (the USB disk) is the only disk other than CDROM. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to this disk from the live CD, putting the bootloader on /dev/sda . The default system couldn't be booted, and nothing I did in the Grub menu/cmdline helped. So I chrooted onto the disk and did grub-install /dev/sda. That seemed to work fine, but Grub (1.97 beta 4) keeps coming up with error: out of disk Even when I drop to the command line to do something simple like ls or help, it's always the same error message. Any hints for resolving this, please?

• Ram configuration 4x4 or 2x8?

  I am looking to upgrade my Ram to 16gigs and I am wondering if there is any distinct advantage of the way I do it. That being a 4x4 or 2x8 set up. In all my searching there have been a number of pros for each profile. I can find no benchmarck results for either setup as a compaison. So, if there are 2 profiles of the same speed, same voltage, same timing and same cas what would perform better or have a better over all benafit? A few examples from my search - a 4x4 set would lend a benafit in that if one stick failed, you only lose 25% of your Ram vs 50% in a 2x8 set up. a 2x8 set up would have less strain on the memory controler and motherboard. a 2x8 would generate less heat. a 2x8 set up is easier to over clock (not part of my need, but alot of the comparisons circled around the overclocability ease of the 2 stick set up). There is one outstanding benafit that I have found in at least the target company I have looked at and that is price. The 2x8 is nearly half the cost. My motherboard supports a max of 16 gigs and I have a 64 bit OS. Has anyone seen any performance comparisons or is 16 gb just 16 gb no matter how you slice it? • How do I get a USB hard-disk adaper to work with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I have a PCMCIA (Cardbus) 32bit USB 2.0 2-port card. If I plug my MP3 player in it works fine. I have a USB adapter for a hard disk drive. When I plug that into the PCMCIA USB slot the light on that hard disk flashed between red and green - it should stay green. "USB Mass Storage device" is added in the Device Manager, but no drive letter appears in My Computer. The installing device icon down by the clock never goes away. (Windows XP SP3.)

• Can I control Caption sequence numbering from styles other than "Heading "?

  Similar question to Wrong caption using 'Appendix' header style , so the answer may well be "I can't." I created a style called "Appendix" which is based on "Heading 1" , is at "level 1" , and is numbered A,B,C... . I use the standard "Insert Caption" to get Figure or Table captions. I then modded the first field code to be STYLEREF "Appendix" \s and that properly displays the Appendix letter sequence. However, the second field code, SEQ \s 1 refers to the last "Heading 1" . I've tried things like SEQ \s "Appendix" to no avail. Is there any way around this? Should I generate a new "Appendix caption"-ish style which is a "numbered list" and manually set the 'restart at 1' counting in each Appendix?

I need one that supplies sufficient power for an external hard drive, and doesn't have any "known limitations" in the way.

• Single PC Satellite Office Firewall

  We are setting up a small, single PC office about 200 miles away. We plan on getting a cable internet connection but need some advice on a sufficient firewall. We would like to keep it under $100 if possible. 2 options we are considering are: Cisco RVS4000 (got some bad reviews) Linksys WRT120N (running DD-WRT) We need the ability for VPN but other than that we don't need anything special.   I would like to rent a remote computer, like a virtual Vista or Windows 7 desktop, and run everything on it and access it with RDP (fastest). It could be virtual (running on Xen or Hyper-V) and the price needs to be right. Windows 7 to Windows 7 has nice RDP offload feature and doing stuff in the cloud is fast. Anywhere I could rent something like that? I've been using Amazon and CloudLayer, but they are optimized for server versions of Windows.

  In my work I have with great results used approximate string matching algorithms such as Damerau–Levenshtein distance to make my code less vulnerable to spelling mistakes. Now I have a need to match strings against simple regular expressions such TV Schedule for \d\d (Jan|Feb|Mar|...). This means that the string TV Schedule for 10 Jan should return 0 while T Schedule for 10. Jan should return 2. This could be done by generating all strings in the regex (in this case 100x12) and find the best match, but that doesn't seam practical. Do you have any ideas how to do this effectively?

  I'm processing an IMAP mailbox and running into trouble parsing the dates using the mxDateTime package. • Using "Show values as" option in Excel 2007 pivot table when source is SSAS cube?

  I have an Excel 2007 pivot table showing "Year" across the top and "Month" down the side. What I am trying to do is represent the values as "% Difference" from the same month of the previous year. (Ex. If Jan-07 is $100,000 and Jan-08 is $120,000, I would like Jan-08 to show '20%'). However, every time I try to do this (using the "Show values as" tab of Value Field Settings) all of my numbers go to '#N/A'. Is there a way to do this using an Analysis Services cube as the data source? When I do this exact same thing using data on a different sheet as the data source for the pivot table, it works fine. Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

I'ved read in this article that you can use rack-rewrite to take care of the redirection, since I am using Heroku to host this.   I'm trying to set the OutputPath value to an absolute path: <OutputPath>c:\Projects\xxx\Deployment</OutputPath> But I get this error: Error 17 The expression "[System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath(D:\Projects\xxx\trunk\xxx.Web.Deployment\c:\Projects\xxx\Deployment\)" cannot be evaluated. The given path's format is not supported. 1 1 xxx.Web.Deployment Is there a way to use an absolute path with the OutputPath property?   Hello, I work with Visual Studio 2008 and work on a web project which contains a web site. When opening the solution file, I receive the error message: "Unable to open the Web site http://localhost/myWebsite.de. The Web site http://localhost/myWebsite.de does not exist." I can see the web site greyed out, with the remark "unavailable", in the solution folder. It is possible to add the web site to the solution, but after relaunching Visual Studio, it´s gone again. Has anyone had this problem in a similar way?

I'd love to use GPGPU for image processing, particles, and fast geometric operations. Right now, it seems the two contenders in this space are CUDA and OpenCL. I'd like to know: Is OpenCL usable yet from Java on Windows/Mac? What are the libraries ways to interface to OpenCL/CUDA? Is using JNA directly an option? Am I forgetting something?   Since yesterday, I receive a security exception when I want to run a unit-test from within VS.NET 2008. The error goes like this: SecurityException: that assembly does not allow partially trusted callers ... The assembly that failed was : file:///S:/MyProject/MyAssembly.dll The S: drive is a mapped drive which points to a physical location on my disk. What I find very strange, is that this used to work for months previously. I mean, I did this all the time. In order to get this to work, I 've created a new security zone with the caspol utility in order to give this S: network share drive FullTrust. In other words, when I run caspol -m -lg I see this (I removed the other zones for the sake of brevity): 1.2. Zone - Intranet: LocalIntranet 1.2.1. All code: Same site Web 1.2.2. All code: Same directory FileIO - 'Read, PathDiscovery' 1.2.3. Url - file://R:/*: FullTrust 1.2.4. Url - file://S:/*: FullTrust 1.2.5. Url - file:///S:/*: FullTrust I've added the 1.2.5 zone just recently because the error that was given, mentionned file:///s:/.... Any ideas ? Could it be that this has something to do with the installation of VS.NET 2010 or the .NET Framework version 4.0 ?

• Choosing random numbers efficiently

  I have a method, which uses random samples to approximate a calculation. This method is called millions of times, so its very important that the process of choosing the random numbers is efficient. I'm not sure how fast javas Random().nextInt really are, but my program does not seem to benefit as much as I would like it too. When choosing the random numbers, I do the following (in semi pseudo-code): // Repeat this 300000 times Set set = new Set(); while(set.length != 5) set.add(randomNumber(MIN,MAX)); Now, this obviously has a bad worst-case running time, as the random-function in theory can add duplicated numbers for an eternity, thus staying in the while-loop forever. However, the numbers are chosen from {0..45}, so a duplicated value is for the most part unlikely. When I use the above method, its only 40% faster than my other method, which does not approximate, but yields the correct result. This is ran ~ 1 million times, so I was expecting this new method to be at least 50% faster. Do you have any suggestions for a faster method? Or maybe you know of a more efficient way of generation a set of random numbers.
