• How do I generate mipmap .png and model .obj files for LibGDX?

  I'm playing a bit with LibGDX (OpenGL ES 2.0 wrapper for Android). I found some sample code which used prepared files to load models and mipmap textures for them, e.g., at https://github.com/libgdx/libgdx/blob/master/demos/invaders/gdx-invaders/src/com/badlogic/gdxinvaders/RendererGL20.java it reads .obj file for the model and RGB565 format .png file to apply a mipmapped texture to it. What is the best / easiest way for me to create these files? I understand .obj files are generated by a bunch of tools (I installed Blender, Wings3D and Kerkythea so far), but which ones will be the most user friendly for someone unfamiliar with 3D modelling? But more importantly, how do I produce a .png file with the mipmapped texture? The .png I looked at ( https://github.com/libgdx/libgdx/blob/master/demos/invaders/gdx-invaders/data/ship.png ) seems to include different textures for each of the faces, probably created with some tool. I browsed through the menus for the 3 tools I have installed but didn't find an option to export such a .png file. What am I missing?

• UK SQL Server User Group Events (June)

  There are two events of note for the SQL Server User Group in June.  The first is a Live Meeting event with myself on 04.06.2009.  I am going to be looking at how to integrate Data Mining into your BI solution.  I will be looking at putting DM into SSIS, SSAS and SSRS.  It will be very demo oriented.  You can register for the event here The second event is an event at Microsoft Reading on 10.06.2009.  The evening will be a BI/Data Mining event.  Chris Webb and myself are organizing it and  we want speakers.  We would love to see new faces up there telling us about their BI/DM solutions/Tips and Tricks.  If you want to speak at the event then let me or Chris know.  If you just want to attend then you can register here.

The value lookup can be configured to be displayed as a select list, combo box, input list of values or combo box with list of values. Displaying the list in an af:inputListOfValues component shows the attribute value in an input text field and with an icon attached to it for the user to launch the list-of-values dialog. The list-of-values dialog allows users to use a search form to filter the lookup data list and to select an entry, which return value then is added as the value of the af:inputListOfValues component. Note: The model driven LOV can be configured in ADF Business Components to update multiple attributes with the user selection, though the most common use case is to update the value of a single attribute. A question on OTN was how to access the row of the selected return value on the ADF Faces front end. For this, you need to know that there is a Model property defined on the af:inputListOfValues that references the ListOfValuesModel implementation in the model. It is the value of this Model property that you need to get access to. The af:inputListOfValues has a ReturnPopupListener property that you can use to configure a managed bean method to receive notification when the user closes the LOV popup dialog by selecting the Ok button. This listener is not triggered when the cancel button is pressed. The managed bean signature can be created declaratively in Oracle JDeveloper 11g using the Edit option in the context menu next to the ReturnPopupListener field in the PropertyInspector. The empty method signature looks as shown below public void returnListener(ReturnPopupEvent returnPopupEvent) { } The ReturnPopupEvent object gives you access the RichInputListOfValues component instance, which represents the af:inputListOfValues component at runtime. From here you access the Model property of the component to then get a handle to the CollectionModel. The CollectionModel returns an instance of JUCtrlHierBinding in its getWrappedData method. Though there is no tree binding definition for the list of values dialog defined in the PageDef, it exists. Once you have access to this, you can read the row the user selected in the list of values dialog. • Real Life Pixar Lamp Can’t Get Enough Of Human Interaction

  This curious lamp, powered by an Arduino board and servo motors, is just as playful as the on-screen counterpart that inspired its creation. The New Zealand Herald reports on the creation of the lamp, seen in action in the video above: The project is a collaborative effort by Victoria University students Shanshan Zhou, Adam Ben-Gur and Joss Doggett, who met in a Physical Computing class. The lamp’s movements are informed by a webcam with an algorithm working behind it. Robotics and facial recognition technology enable the lamp to search for faces in the images from its webcam. When it spots a face, it follows as if trying to maintain eye contact.   This year's Umbraco Code Garden Conference ( Festival ) was excellent, it was great to see so many familiar faces again, to see some inspiring talks and to enjoy the local beverages!It has become a bit of a tradition at Umbraco conference's to host a Bingo game where the prizes are various Umbraco branded accessories, only a true Umbracoholic would want ;-)This year, the luck gods were shinning down on me and I won the "grand prize" delivered by a "motorcycle courier" as it was such a large present... at least, that was the build up to finding out what it was! So everyone including myself were thinking, if this is that big, how on earth will I get it on the plane home!Luckily, it was actually easy to fit in the luggage, as you will see below :)

• E_FAIL: An undetermined error occurred (-2147467259) when loading a cube texture

  I'm trying to implement a skybox into my engine, and I'm having some trouble loading the image as a cube map. Everything works (but it doesn't look right) if I don't load using an ImageLoadInformation struct in the ShaderResourceView.FromFile() method, but it breaks if I do. I need to, of course, because I need to tell SlimDX to load it as a cubemap. How can I fix this? • Using the af:poll to refresh parts of the page periodically

  Just a quick sample of using the af:poll components. A component that enables you to do things in a periodic fashion. For example check if something has changed on the server and update the UI. A more "modern" approach is to actually use push instead of pull, and ADF Faces will allow you to do that with ADS (here, and here). But the poll still has its place. It's quite useful for dashboard type of applications where you want periodic updates of the graphs shown on the page. As you can see it's quite simple to use the tag. I also show my lazy approach to invoking declarative operations on a data control from a backing bean without manually writing code.

• Will JVisualVM degrade application performance?

  I have doubts in JVisual VM profiler tool related to performance. I have requirement to implement a JVM Monitoring tool for my enterpise java application. I have gone through some profiling tools in market but all them are having some kind of agent file which we need include in server startup. I have a fear that these client agent will degrade my application performance will more. So I have decided to JVisual VM because this profiler tool comes with JDK itself but before implementing JVisualVM, does anybody faces any issues with JVisualVM profiler tool? As well as, is this safe if I implement in application?

• Poof and it’s gone - Internship @ Oracle Netherlands

  We still remember the first day we walked in the office in September. The moment we walked into the big entrance hall and saw all those unfamiliar faces, we had no idea that we all had such diverse personalities, and still we all had a great time together. At the end of our internship we could all say we felt comfortable working at the office, playing “some” table tennis.   1. if you want the java script code in jspx.   - <af:resource> tag available under adf faces ui component has the best supportability for java script. If you want to invoke the js function on some adf ui component then you will have to include a client listener tag with js function name and the event type.If you want it to happen on a non adf html based compoent then you can have an anchor tag  specified with the javascript tag , event type and js function name (with parameters - if any) and as soon as the specifed action happens on that component then the js function would be invoked.2.if you want it in adf page fragment (jsff)  - jsff supports java script wrapped under <trh:script> </trh:script> tag. Rest of the things follow the same way as that of jspx.

• What is the difference between Output Text and Output Text (Active)?

  When building an ADF Faces application in JDeveloper, you might have noticed that in the Component Palette there is an option for both "Output Text" as well as "Output Text (Active)".   Why do we have both of these options?Under the covers, there are actually two tags, af:outputText and af:activeOutputText.  Similarly, there is an active version of af:image, namely af:activeImage, and an active version of af:commandToolbarButton, af:activeCommandToolbarButton.In the vast majority of cases, developers should use the non-active version of the components.   The active version of the components are there to support specific usecases around Server Side Push using the Active Data Service feature.  Most of our customers don't use Server Side Push, and hence do not need the active version of the components.  You can learn more about Server Side Push with ADF Active Data Service in this blog.By using the active version of af:outputText, af:image or af:commandToolbarButton when you don't need to, you are taking a performance hit that is unnecessary.

• Free Version of Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF)

A long time coming, the press release is finally out: Oracle Introduces Free Version of Oracle Application Development Framework New Oracle ADF Essentials Brings ADF Benefits to the Broader Developer Community Oracle ADF Essentials is a free packaging of core technologies from the Oracle Application Development Framework that can be used to develop and deploy applications that include ADF Business Components, ADF Controller, ADF Binding, and ADF Faces Rich Client Components without incurring licensing costs. Both Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse provide visual and declarative development experience for using it. Oracle ADF Essentials comes with specific instructions and certification for deploying applications on the open-source Glassfish server, but the license is not limited to that server. • Loading Wavefront Data into VAO and Render It

  I have successfully loaded a triangulated wavefront(.obj) into 6 vectors, the first 3 vectors contain the locations for vertices, uv coords, and normals. The last three have the indices stored for each of the faces. I have been looking into using VAO's and VBO's to render, and I'm not quite sure how to load and render the data. One of my biggest concerns is the fact that indexed rendering only allows you to have one array of indices, meaning I somehow have to make all of the first three vectors the same size, the only way I thought of doing this, is to make 3 new vertex's of equal size, and load in the data for each face, but that would completely defeat the purpose of indexing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jordan

• Thank You For Visiting Us At Oracle OpenWorld And JavaOne

  Thanks to everyone who visited us at the Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne conferences last week. We always enjoy putting faces with names and meeting those of you who are certified or are interested in Certification. Personally, I spent my week on sunny Taylor street at the Java Certification Zone in Taylor Street Cafe.  I talked to over 100 people last week about certification and handed out over 65 ribbons. The Oracle Certification Lounge at OpenWorld, at Moscone South enjoyed more than 200 visitors over the week. Both locations offered scheduled speakers and available experts, in addition to answers to all of your certification questions and account help when needed. We look forward to this opportunity every year to connect with you face to face. If you didn't make it out this year, we hope to see you next year - perhaps we will be so lucky as to enjoy another unseasonably warm week in San Francisco!
