  • Ubuntu most menu items dark-on-dark

    Since to ubuntu 10.04 upgrade move of my drop-down menus have been dark-on-dark text, which becomes readable (changed background) when selected. I don't know what's causing this but it's a problem on Ambience and Radiance both. Any hints?

  • Disabling Keyboard Wakeup for Ubuntu 10.04 on Acer 1810TZ

    My Acer Aspire 1810TZ laptop suspends fine but wakes up on any slight key-press. I would like to disable this behaviour.   • Deep freeze alternative for Ubuntu

    I made some research and found out that Deep freeze is not available for ubuntu. Is there a software like deep freeze for Ubuntu 10.04. To prevent writing data on the disk. I need this so that I could try all sorts of stuff on Ubuntu without worrying if I could damage the Windows installation that is installed along side with it. Virtual box is good. But the performance is not. Because I only have 2gb of ram.

  • customized xkb layouts not working (in KDE?) after upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04

    I customised my keyboard layout in 9.10 by editing the appropriate /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ file. After upgrading to 10.04 I noticed it had overwritten all my modifications, so I recovered the layout and overwrote the symbol file's base entry. Sadly KDE (and, presumably, the entire OS) seems to ignore the files altogether. The help files don't mention anything about modifying layouts anyway (and the layout switcher seems to be using setxkbmap, which uses the above path according to its man page), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Do I need to compile this into some other format somehow or how do I get it to work?

  • Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

    I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english..   • CloneZilla Broke My System? Ubunut Installation Lost After Running CloneZilla

    I just read through this post and tried to get my installation back using this answer to no avail. What happened to me is this: I spent an hour or more reading through the CloneZilla docs. I thought I was ready to test it out so I burned the disc with the ISO image on it and ran it. The system I used was Ubuntu 10.04, 32-bit. Everything seemed to go fine. I made a clone of my first partition and copied it to my second partition. I followed the instructions, removed the disc and rebooted my system. At this point, I would expect to have two bootable Linux installations, identical to one another. However, upon booting, I got this error message: error: no such device: 4cf1a6ef-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-4e3a3ce92bcd error: file not found I booted from a Live Ubuntu disc and was able to see my to partitions: 4cf1(1) and 4cf1(2) (abbreviated, because the volumes have long numbers to identify them). The 50 GB partition, on which the original Ubuntu installation sits is the number and the second partition (175 GB) is the same number with an "_" at the end. I could browse the disc partitions and see the files, but I'm not sure what to do next. I know there is a way to restore my grub loader and actually boot either of these installations, but my Linux know-how is limited. Can I edit the boot loader file to fix this problem? The only clue I have is CloneZilla said something about making a new GRUB but I thought it was going to basically modify it so I could boot either installation. Not sure what happened. I am going to look through this post for the time being to see if I can learn anything to help my problem. But I thought that, since this happened as a result of using CloneZilla, it may be a unique question for this board.

  • Emacs doesn't load gui.

    Hi, whenever I run emacs or emacs23 on terminal I just get the following output: ** (emacs:2620): CRITICAL **: menu_proxy_module_load: assertion `dbusproxy != NULL' failed And the gui doesn't load, and emacs' window never opens. The emacs process doesn't actually crash (the terminal stays busy, and I can see the emacs23 process running with ps -e). I've tried running it with the -D --debug-init arguments, but the same thing happens and the output is exactly the same. However, if I run emacs -nw it successfully runs emacs in terminal mode as if nothing were wrong. Strangely, this problem only started happening the second time I ran emacs today. The first time it worked perfectly fine. Since then, I've tried rebooting and I've tried purging the emacs installation, to no success. I haven't installed any new packages today, but I might have upgraded some, could that be the reason? Is there a way to find out which packages were installed/upgraded today?   • Shouldn't emesene themes change the emesene indicator icon?

    As it stands right now, I can't get the emesene icon in the indicator applet (or notification area, or whatever it's named) to change. No matter what icon theme I choose, even installing new themes, the icon is always the default one. Is that a standard behavior, or am I getting a bug? I'm running the latest version of emesene from their ppa (1.6-dev), on Lucid Lynx.

  • Fresh install of 64bit Ubuntu needs flash but adobe doesn't have a version for me.

    I need flash to watch YT videos. YT said "You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video." with a link to download flash. I'm running 10.04 so I see possible choices for myself: 1) a .deb file for Ubuntu 8.04+ or APT (whats this??) for Ubuntu 9.04. I downloaded the deb file and when I opened it in the installer it said that I have the wrong architecture. Anyone have an idea about how to work around this?

  • change default userid for connecting to local AFP share?

    I've got Netatalk & Avahi running on a local Ubuntu server--I use two different userids, "afp" for Time Machine and "stew" to access my media files etc. In order to mount a shared directory on my server, I have to click "Connect As..." and enter my userid/password every time, because it always tries to log in using Time Machine's userid. I'm not sure if this is because that userid is set as default, or just because it's the last userid that logged in to that server--either way: Is there a way to change the default userid for connecting to a given server? Mega extra credit: I'd love to have this automated, such that my userid, "stew", is always logged in (and heck, it'd be great to have the directories always mounted, too!) whenever the server is available.   • Increasing the screen resolution in Ubuntu 10.04

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 edition on my Acer 5738Z laptop. The screen size of my laptop is about 15'' but the screen resolution in Ubuntu is stuck at 1366x768. I know that my monitor could give better resolution, because previously I was running Win XP and I was able to set higher resolution there. So, my questions here: How do I increase my screen resolution, here? As per the answer given to a related question, I tried to edit the xorg.conf file, but I couldn't find the file in the place /etc/x11/. Should I create this file? If I have to install screen drivers separately, where could I find it?

    I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.

  • Set default system audio output port (for all accounts)

    The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab. The problem is this would only apply to a single account, and I would like to change it system-wide, so it applies to all accounts on the system (I have more than 100 users...). I'm after 2 hours of Googling, so any help would be appreciated.

  • Is it possible to install Ubuntu Server 10.04 *from* a USB drive?

    I've tried the Universal USB Installer from PenDrive, and put 10.04 Ubuntu Server on it. But when I boot up and try to install, it looks for a Ubuntu CD ROM, which I do not have. I thought the whole point is to be able to install from a USB, which seems easy with the Desktop version. Why is the server version not allowing me to do this? Am I missing something?

    I've installed ubuntu 10.04, hoping to get rid of the 9.10 errors. (Nvidia driver didn't work quite properly, had some problems with clicking in flash, and I had -and still have- wired network working, but ubuntu said that it's disconnected) So the Nvidia driver is better now, but the network error is the same. I still have a working wired network connection, but when it starts says that it is disconnected. Notification area tells me the same thing. Why is that?
