• How can I SETF an element in a tree by an accessor?

  We've been using Lisp in my AI course. The assignments I've received have involved searching and generating tree-like structures. For each assignment, I've ended up writing something like: (defun initial-state () (list 0 ; score nil ; children 0 ; value 0)) ; something else and building my functions around these "states", which are really just nested lists with some loosely defined structure. To make the structure more rigid, I've tried to write accessors, such as: (defun state-score ( state ) (nth 2 state)) This works for reading the value (which should be all I need to do in a nicely functional world. However, as time crunches, and I start to madly hack, sometimes I want a mutable structure). I don't seem to be able to SETF the returned ...thing (place? value? pointer?). I get an error with something like: (setf (state-score *state*) 10) Sometimes I seem to have a little more luck writing the accessor/mutator as a macro: (defmacro state-score ( state ) `(nth 2 ,state)) However I don't know why this should be a macro, so I certainly shouldn't write it as a macro (except that sometimes it works. Programming by coincidence is bad). What is an appropriate strategy to build up such structures? More importantly, where can I learn about whats going on here (what operations affect the memory in what way)?

• Lazy Sequences that "Look Ahead" for Project Euler Problem 14

  I'm trying to solve Project Euler Problem 14 in a lazy way. Unfortunately, I may be trying to do the impossible: create a lazy sequence that is both lazy, yet also somehow 'looks ahead' for values it hasn't computed yet. The non-lazy version I wrote to test correctness was: (defn chain-length [num] (loop [len 1 n num] (cond (= n 1) len (odd? n) (recur (inc len) (+ 1 (* 3 n))) true (recur (inc len) (/ n 2))))) Which works, but is really slow. Of course I could memoize that: (def memoized-chain (memoize (fn [n] (cond (= n 1) 1 (odd? n) (+ 1 (memoized-chain (+ 1 (* 3 n)))) true (+ 1 (memoized-chain (/ n 2))))))) However, what I really wanted to do was scratch my itch for understanding the limits of lazy sequences, and write a function like this: (def lazy-chain (letfn [(chain [n] (lazy-seq (cons (if (odd? n) (+ 1 (nth lazy-chain (dec (+ 1 (* 3 n))))) (+ 1 (nth lazy-chain (dec (/ n 2))))) (chain (+ n 1)))))] (chain 1))) Pulling elements from this will cause a stack overflow for n2, which is understandable if you think about why it needs to look 'into the future' at n=3 to know the value of the tenth element in the lazy list because (+ 1 (* 3 n)) = 10. Since lazy lists have much less overhead than memoization, I would like to know if this kind of thing is possible somehow via even more delayed evaluation or queuing?

• Fatal error when using FILE* in Windows from DLL

  Hi there. Recently, I found a problem with Visual C++ 2008 compiler, but using minor hack avoid it. Currently, I cannot use the same hack, but problem exists as in 2008 as in 2010 (Express). So, I've prepared for you 2 simple C file: one for DLL, one for program: DLL (file-dll.c): #include <stdio.h> __declspec(dllexport) void print_to_stream (FILE *stream) { fprintf (stream, "OK!\n"); } And for program, which links this DLL via file-dll.lib: Program: #include <stdio.h> __declspec(dllimport) void print_to_stream (FILE *stream); int main (void) { print_to_stream (stdout); return 0; } To compile and link DLL: cl /LD file-dll.c To compile and link program: cl file-test.c file-dll.lib When invoking file-test.exe, I got the fatal error (similar to segmentation fault in UNIX). As I said early, I had that the same problem before: about transferring FILE* pointer to DLL. I thought, that it may be because of compiler mismatch, but now I'm using one compiler for everything and it's not the problem. ;-( What can I do now? UPD: I've found solution: cl /LD /MD file-dll.c cl /MD file-test.c file-dll.lib The key is to link to dynamic library, but (I did not know it) by default it links staticaly and (hencefore) error occurs (I see why). • Windows Build System: How to build a project (from its source code) which doesn't have *.sln or Visu

  I'm facing this problem. So, I need to build the support libraries (zlib, libtiff, libpng, libxml2, libiconv) with "Multithreaded DLL" (/MD) & "Multithreaded DLL Debug" (/MDd) run-time options. But the problem is there is no direct way . I mean there is no *.sln / *.vcproj file which I can open in Visual C++ and build it. I'm aware with the GNU build system: $./configure --with-all-sorts-of-required-switches $./make $./make install During my search I've encountered with something called CMake which generates *.vcproj & *.sln file but for that CMakeLists.txt is required. Not all projects provide CMakeLists.txt. I've never compiled anything from Visual C++ Command Line. Generally most projects provide makefile. Now how do I generate *.vcproj / *.sln from this? Can I compile with mingw-make of MinGW? If I can, how do I set different options ("Multi-Threaded"(/MT), "Multi-Threaded Debug"(/MTd), "Multi-Threaded DLL"(/MD), "Multi-Threaded DLL Debug"(/MDd)) for run-time libraries? I don't know what other ways are available. Please throw some light on this.

• Moving to an arbitrary position in a file in Python

  Let's say that I routinely have to work with files with an unknown, but large, number of lines. Each line contains a set of integers (space, comma, semicolon, or some non-numeric character is the delimiter) in the closed interval [0, R], where R can be arbitrarily large. The number of integers on each line can be variable. Often times I get the same number of integers on each line, but occasionally I have lines with unequal sets of numbers. Suppose I want to go to Nth line in the file and retrieve the Kth number on that line (and assume that the inputs N and K are valid --- that is, I am not worried about bad inputs). How do I go about doing this efficiently in Python 3.1.2 for Windows? I do not want to traverse the file line by line. I tried using mmap, but while poking around here on SO, I learned that that's probably not the best solution on a 32-bit build because of the 4GB limit. And in truth, I couldn't really figure out how to simply move N lines away from my current position. If I can at least just "jump" to the Nth line then I can use .split() and grab the Kth integer that way. The nuance here is that I don't just need to grab one line from the file. I will need to grab several lines: they are not necessarily all near each other, the order in which I get them matters, and the order is not always based on some deterministic function. Any ideas? I hope this is enough information. Thanks!

• Coupling an MFC CListCtrl and CTreeCtrl to get a view of the whole tree, not just one node at a time

  Consider Windows Explorer (or regedit or similar). To the left side, there is a tree view, and to the right, a list view. In all cases I know of, the contents of the right view reflect the attributes of the selected node from the left pane. This is all well and good... but just not what I want. The nodes of the tree I want to display have a very few attributes (2-3) associated with each node - a reasonable amount to display horizontally as a row in a table. Rather than waste all that list view space on a single node with very few properties, I would like to have my list view display a table of the whole tree's properties (as the part of the tree currently expanded). So the nth line in the left view (tree) will correspond directly to the nth line in the right view (list/table), and I will get a decent overview of the properties of my tree. Does anyone know of code that does this? I am guessing that slaving a CListCtrl to a CTreeCtrl would be the way to go, and somehow overriding the vertical scrolling functions so that they are locked together. I'm just not sure that it is possible to lock the scrolls together like this... among other things! All advice gratefully welcomed :-)

• jCarousel - achieving an active state AND wrap:circular

  Hey folks A while back I implemented the jCarousel image solution for a client that required a numbered active state. After a bit of googling a found the answer but noticed that the preferred circular option would not work. What would happen is that once the carousel had cycled through all its (5) images, upon the return to the first, the active state would be lost, because, according to jcarousel it was actually the 6th (the index just keeps on incrementing). I just went ahead and instead used wrap:'both' which at least had a correctly functioning active state. However now the client says they dont like this effect and simply want the animation to return to position 1 after the final image. This means I need to get'wrap: 'both' working somehow. Below is my current code.   I was looking at the answer of this question regarding multiple generic types in one container and I can't really get it to work: the properties of the Metadata class are not visible, since the abstract class doesn't have them. I believe it's because the abstract class does not define the property Function, thus the whole effort is completely useless. Is there a way that we can get the properties?

• How to detect the root recursive call?

  Say we're writing a simple recursive function fib(n) that calculates the nth Fibonacci number. Now, we want the function to print that nth number. As the same function is being called repeatedly, there has to be a condition that allows only the root call to print. The question is: how to write this condition without passing any additional arguments, or using global/static variables. • Modifying html of dom element that was created after page loaded

  I have two separate AJAX calls. One that gets a list of items from a txt file and creates an HTML table out of them and one that talks to a database to find how much each item costs and then lists this in the corresponding table cell for each item (I know this may sound like a strange approach, but it's a good option in our case...). The issue is that the price is not getting written to the table since the table is created (or to be precise, the rows of the table are created) after the page loads. • Should I worry about the integrity of my linux software RAID5 after a crash or kernel panic?

  I have a dual core Intel i5 Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS system running kernel 2.6.32-22-server #33-Ubuntu SMP with three 1TB SATA hard drives set up in a RAID5 array using linux md devices. I have read about the RAID5 write hole and am concerned: if my linux system locks up or kernel panics, should I be assume that the integrety of my data has been compromised and restore from backup? How can I know if the data on the RAID5 array is "safe"?

• mdadm: Win7-install created a boot partition on one of my RAID6 drives. How to rebuild?

  My problem happened when I attempted to install Windows 7 on it's own SSD. The Linux OS I used which has knowledge of the software RAID system is on a SSD that I disconnected prior to the install. This was so that windows (or I) wouldn't inadvertently mess it up. However, and in retrospect, foolishly, I left the RAID disks connected, thinking that windows wouldn't be so ridiculous as to mess with a HDD that it sees as just unallocated space. Boy was I wrong! After copying over the installation files to the SSD (as expected and desired), it also created an ntfs partition on one of the RAID disks. Both unexpected and totally undesired! . I changed out the SSDs again, and booted up in linux. mdadm didn't seem to have any problem assembling the array as before, but if I tried to mount the array, I got the error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg: EXT4-fs (md0): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 1318081259)! EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I then used qparted to delete the newly created ntfs partition on /dev/sdd so that it matched the other three /dev/sd{b,c,e}, and requested a resync of my array with echo repair > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action This took around 4 hours, and upon completion, dmesg reports: md: md0: requested-resync done. A bit brief after a 4-hour task, though I'm unsure as to where other log files exist (I also seem to have messed up my sendmail configuration). EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I'm a bit unsure where to proceed from here, and trying stuff "to see if it works" is a bit too risky for me. This is what I suggest I should attempt to do: Tell mdadm that /dev/sdd (the one that windows wrote into) isn't reliable anymore, pretend it is newly re-introduced to the array, and reconstruct its content based on the other three drives. I also could be totally wrong in my assumptions, that the creation of the ntfs partition on /dev/sdd and subsequent deletion has changed something that cannot be fixed this way. My question: Help, what should I do? If I should do what I suggested , how do I do that? From reading documentation, etc, I would think maybe: mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd However, the documentation examples suggest /dev/sdd1, which seems strange to me, as there is no partition there as far as linux is concerned, just unallocated space. Maybe these commands won't work without. Maybe it makes sense to mirror the partition table of one of the other raid devices that weren't touched, before --re-add. Something like: sfdisk -d /dev/sdb | sfdisk /dev/sdd Bonus question: Why would the Windows 7 installation do something so st...potentially dangerous? Update I went ahead and marked /dev/sdd as faulty, and removed it (not physically) from the array: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd However, attempting to --re-add was disallowed: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd mdadm: --re-add for /dev/sdd to /dev/md0 is not possible --add, was fine. # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdd mdadm -D /dev/md0 now reports the state as clean, degraded, recovering, and /dev/sdd as spare rebuilding. /proc/mdstat shows the recovery progress: md0 : active raid6 sdd[4] sdc[1] sde[3] sdb[0] 3907026848 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 4k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/3] [UU_U] [>....................] recovery = 2.1% (42887780/1953513424) finish=348.7min speed=91297K/sec nmon also shows expected output: ¦sdb 0% 87.3 0.0| > |¦ ¦sdc 71% 109.1 0.0|RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR > |¦ ¦sdd 40% 0.0 87.3|WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW > |¦ ¦sde 0% 87.3 0.0|> || It looks good so far. • Spotlight Infinite Indexing issue (external data drive)

  This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will. I have tried several things - here is a list: - make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue - run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred - wipe out all ACLs on entire drive - set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777 - remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive - transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems) - use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it. In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again. So there it is. It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5. Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before.   How can I add multiple values to one object in an Array. I am having Environment and Cluster, I am able to assign multiple clusters to one environment. Now I want to add application name to this environment and cluster pair. I am having page called "Add Application". Here I am using select menu to for environment and Cluster. My first question is, when I select environment then want to show only those clusters which are assigned to that environment name. And assign application name to that pair. Also should be able to edit the Application field.
