• Solaris 11 SRU / Update relationship explained, and blackout period on delivery of new bug fixes eliminated

  Relationship between SRUs and Update releases As you may know, Support Repository Updates (SRUs) for Oracle Solaris 11 are released monthly and are available to customers with an appropriate support contract.  SRUs primarily deliver bug fixes.  They may also deliver low risk feature enhancements. Solaris Update are typically released once or twice a year, containing support for new hardware, new software feature enhancements, and all bug fixes available at the time the Update content was finalized.  They also contain a significant number of new bug fixes, for issues found internally in Oracle and complex customer bug fixes which  require significant "soak" time to ensure their efficacy prior to release. Changes to SRU and Update Naming Conventions We're changing the naming convention of Update releases from a date based format such as Oracle Solaris 10 8/11 to a simpler "dot" version numbering, e.g. Oracle Solaris 11.1. Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 (i.e. the initial Oracle Solaris 11 release) may be referred to as 11.0. SRUs will simply be named as "dot.dot" releases, e.g. Oracle Solaris 11.1.1, for SRU1 after Oracle Solaris 11.1. Many Oracle products and infrastructure tools such as BugDB and MOS are tailored towards this "dot.dot" style of release naming, so these name changes align Oracle Solaris with these conventions. No Blackout Periods on Bug Fix Releases The Oracle Solaris 11 release process has been enhanced to eliminate blackout periods on the delivery of new bug fixes to customers. Previously, Oracle Solaris Updates were a superset of all preceding bug fix deliveries.  This made for a very simple update message - that which releases later is always a superset of that which was delivered previously. However, it had a downside.  Once the contents of an Update release were frozen prior to release, the release of new bug fixes for customer issues was also frozen to maintain the Update's superset relationship. Since the amount of change allowed into the final internal builds of an Update release is reduced to mitigate risk, this throttling back also impacted the release of new bug fixes to customers. This meant that there was effectively a 6 to 9 week hiatus on the release of new bug fixes prior to the release of each Update.  That wasn't good for customers awaiting critical bug fixes. We've eliminated this hiatus on the delivery of new bug fixes in Oracle Solaris 11 by allowing new bug fixes to continue to be released in SRUs even after the contents of the next Update release have been frozen. The release of SRUs will remain contiguous, with the first SRU released after the Update release effectively being a superset of both the the Update release and all preceding SRUs*.  That is, later SRUs are supersets of the content of previous SRUs. Therefore, the progression path from the final SRUs prior to the Update release is to the first SRU after the Update release, rather than to the Update release itself. The timeline / logical sequence of releases can be shown as follows: Updates: 11.0                                                11.1                               11.2     etc.                  \                                                         \                                    \ SRUs:       11.0.1, 11.0.2,...,11.0.12, 11.0.13, 11.1.1, 11.1.2,...,11.1.x, 11.2.1, etc. For example, for systems with Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 SRU12.4 or later installed, the recommended update path is to Oracle Solaris 11.1.1 (i.e. SRU1 after Solaris 11.1) or later rather than to the Solaris 11.1 release itself.  This will ensure no bug fixes are "lost" during the update. If for any reason you do wish to update from SRU12.4 or later to the 11.1 release itself - for example to update a test system - the instructions to do so are in the SRU12.4 README, https://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Services/download?type=readme&aru=15564533 For systems with Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 SRU11.4 or earlier installed, customers can update to either the 11.1 release or any 11.1 SRU as both will be supersets of their current version. Please do read the README of the SRU you are updating to, as it will contain important installation instructions which will save you time and effort. *Nerdy details: SRUs only contain the latest change delta relative to the Update on which they are based.  Their dependencies will, however, effectively pull in the Update content.  Customers maintaining a local Repo (e.g. behind their firewall), need to add both the 11.1 content and the relevant SRU content to their Repo, to enable the SRU's dependencies to be resolved.  Both will be available from the standard Support Repo and from MOS.  This is no different to existing SRUs for Oracle Solaris 11.0, whereby you may often get away with using just the SRU content to update, but the original 11.0 content may be needed in the Repo to resolve dependencies.

• Learning AngularJS by Example – The Customer Manager Application

  I’m always tinkering around with different ideas and toward the beginning of 2013 decided to build a sample application using AngularJS that I call Customer Manager. It’s not exactly the most creative name or concept, but I wanted to build something that highlighted a lot of the different features offered by AngularJS and how they could be used together to build a full-featured app. One of the goals of the application was to ensure that it was approachable by people new to Angular since I’ve never found overly complex applications great for learning new concepts. The application initially started out small and was used in my AngularJS in 60-ish Minutes video on YouTube but has gradually had more and more features added to it and will continue to be enhanced over time. It’ll be used in a new “end-to-end” training course my company is working on for AngularjS as well as in some video courses that will be coming out. Here’s a quick look at what the application home page looks like: In this post I’m going to provide an overview about how the application is organized, back-end options that are available, and some of the features it demonstrates. I’ve already written about some of the features so if you’re interested check out the following posts: Building an AngularJS Modal Service Building a Custom AngularJS Unique Value Directive Using an AngularJS Factory to Interact with a RESTful Service Application Structure The structure of the application is shown to the right. The  homepage is index.html and is located at the root of the application folder. It defines where application views will be loaded using the ng-view directive and includes script references to AngularJS, AngularJS routing and animation scripts, plus a few others located in the Scripts folder and to custom application scripts located in the app folder. The app folder contains all of the key scripts used in the application. There are several techniques that can be used for organizing script files but after experimenting with several of them I decided that I prefer things in folders such as controllers, views, services, etc. Doing that helps me find things a lot faster and allows me to categorize files (such as controllers) by functionality. My recommendation is to go with whatever works best for you. Anyone who says, “You’re doing it wrong!” should be ignored. Contrary to what some people think, there is no “one right way” to organize scripts and other files. As long as the scripts make it down to the client properly (you’ll likely minify and concatenate them anyway to reduce bandwidth and minimize HTTP calls), the way you organize them is completely up to you. Here’s what I ended up doing for this application: Animation code for some custom animations is located in the animations folder. In addition to AngularJS animations (which are defined using CSS in Content/animations.css), it also animates the initial customer data load using a 3rd party script called GreenSock. Controllers are located in the controllers folder. Some of the controllers are placed in subfolders based upon the their functionality while others are placed at the root of the controllers folder since they’re more generic:   The directives folder contains the custom directives created for the application. The filters folder contains the custom filters created for the application that filter city/state and product information. The partials folder contains partial views. This includes things like modal dialogs used in the application. The services folder contains AngularJS factories and services used for various purposes in the application. Most of the scripts in this folder provide data functionality. The views folder contains the different views used in the application. Like the controllers folder, the views are organized into subfolders based on their functionality:   Back-End Services The Customer Manager application (grab it from Github) provides two different options on the back-end including ASP.NET Web API and Node.js. The ASP.NET Web API back-end uses Entity Framework for data access and stores data in SQL Server (LocalDb). The other option on the back-end is Node.js, Express, and MongoDB.   Using the ASP.NET Web API Back-End To run the application using ASP.NET Web API/SQL Server back-end open the .sln file at the root of the project in Visual Studio 2012 or higher (the free Express 2013 for Web version is fine). Press F5 and a browser will automatically launch and display the application. Using the Node.js Back-End To run the application using the Node.js/MongoDB back-end follow these steps: In the CustomerManager directory execute 'npm install' to install Express, MongoDB and Mongoose (package.json). Load sample data into MongoDB by performing the following steps: Execute 'mongod' to start the MongoDB daemon Navigate to the CustomerManager directory (the one that has initMongoCustData.js in it) then execute 'mongo' to start the MongoDB shell Enter the following in the mongo shell to load the seed files that handle seeding the database with initial data: use custmgr load("initMongoCustData.js") load("initMongoSettingsData.js") load("initMongoStateData.js") Start the Node/Express server by navigating to the CustomerManager/server directory and executing 'node app.js' View the application at http://localhost:3000 in your browser. Key Features The Customer Manager application certainly doesn’t cover every feature provided by AngularJS (as mentioned the intent was to keep it as simple as possible) but does provide insight into several key areas: Using factories and services as re-useable data services (see the app/services folder) Creating custom directives (see the app/directives folder) Custom paging (see app/views/customers/customers.html and app/controllers/customers/customersController.js) Custom filters (see app/filters) Showing custom modal dialogs with a re-useable service (see app/services/modalService.js) Making Ajax calls using a factory (see app/services/customersService.js) Using Breeze to retrieve and work with data (see app/services/customersBreezeService.js). Switch the application to use the Breeze factory by opening app/services.config.js and changing the useBreeze property to true. Intercepting HTTP requests to display a custom overlay during Ajax calls (see app/directives/wcOverlay.js) Custom animations using the GreenSock library (see app/animations/listAnimations.js) Creating custom AngularJS animations using CSS (see Content/animations.css) JavaScript patterns for defining controllers, services/factories, directives, filters, and more (see any JavaScript file in the app folder) Card View and List View display of data (see app/views/customers/customers.html and app/controllers/customers/customersController.js) Using AngularJS validation functionality (see app/views/customerEdit.html, app/controllers/customerEditController.js, and app/directives/wcUnique.js) More… Conclusion I’ll be enhancing the application even more over time and welcome contributions as well.   When we try to update the statistics, it throws an error as if the clustered index is disabled. Now let us enable the clustered index only and attempt to update the statistics of the table right after that. Have you ever come across the situation where a conversation never gets over and it continues even though original point of discussion has passed. I am facing the same situation in the case of Disabled Index. Here is the link to original conversations. Is it true that even though indexes are disabled, they continue updating the statistics?“ The answer is very interesting: If you have disabled clustered index, you will be not able to update the statistics at all for any index. If you have enabled clustered index and disabled non clustered index when you update the statistics of the table, it automatically updates the statistics of the ALL (disabled and enabled – both) the indexes on the table. If you are not satisfied with the answer, let us go over a simple example. I have written necessary comments in the code itself to have a clear idea.   Hi, I am running the site at www.euroworker.no, it's a linux server and the site has a backend editor. It's a smarty/php site, and when I try to update a few of the .tpl's (two or three) they don't update. I have tried uploading through FTP and that doesn't work either. I have no knowledge of how servers work or anything, please help? It runs on the livecart system. Thanks!

• Update password for scheduled task

  I have a scheduled task that needs to run as a service account. The service account's password resets every 100 days, so I need to update the password for the scheduled task. I cannot figure out how to do this. When I select "Change User or Group" in the scheduled tasks' properties I get no prompt to update the password. This scheduled task will be deployed on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

  I've installed a version of a very handy application (Nokia Battery Monitor 1.1) and was quite pleased to see a v1.2 out recently. The problem is that I cant seem to update this app on my phone via the ovi app; the 'download' link is disabled. Also tried the 'sw update' app, but it reports that all applications are up-to-date. Any idea how do this without installing/reinstalling the app? The phone model is Nokia 5800

• JPA and NoSQL using EclipseLink - MongoDB supported

  EclipseLink 2.4 has added JPA support for NoSQL databases, MongoDB and Oracle NoSQL are the first ones to make the cut. The support to other NoSQL database can be extended by adding a EclipseLink EISPlatform class and a JCA adapter. A Java class can be mapped to a NoSQL datasource using the @NoSQL annotation or <no-sql> XML element. Even a subset of JPQL and the Criteria API are supported, dependent on the NoSQL database's query support. The connection properties are specified in "persistence.xml". A complete sample showing how JPA annotations are mapping and using @NoSQL is explained here. The MongoDB-version of the source code can also be checked out from the SVN repository. EclipseLink 2.4 is scheduled to be released with Eclipse Juno in June 2012 and the complete set of supported features is described on their wiki. • Oracle - UPSERT with update not executed for unmodified values

I would not mind the dummy update in normal situation, but there's a replication/synchronization system build over this table using triggers on tables to capture updated records and executing this statement frequently for many records simply means that I'd cause huge traffic in triggers and the sync system. Is there any simple method how to reformulate this code that the update statement wouldn't update record if not necessary without using following IF-EXISTS check code which I find not sleek enough and maybe also not most efficient for this task? • Errors when attempting to update source files, Server 2012R2 (errors 80073701 and 14081)

  I have a Windows Server 2012R2 machine that I installed with Server Core, and then decided that I wanted to switch to GUI. I'll make the long story short: I ran windows updates, and now the source files are older/out of sync with the operating system, and I need to update the source files. • Windows Update and lsass.exe

  I have a brand new installation of Windows XP (SP1 or older). I installed Norton AntiVirus, Firefox, Putty, and Cygwin. No other software is present. Windows Update finds the following 64 updates: KB905760, KB978262, Internet Explorer 8, KB71961, KB954155, KB968816, KB923561, KB950762, KB949402, KB950974, KB951376, KB951748, KB952004, KB952954, KB955069, KB956572, KB956802, KB956803, KB956844, KB958470, KB958869, KB959426, KB960803, KB960859, KB961501, KB969059, KB970238, KB970238, KB971032, KB971468, KB971657, KB972270, KB973507, KB973815, KB973904, KB974112, KB974318, KB974392, KB975025, KB975560, KB975561, KB975713, .......) When these updates are applied, the system reboots to a black screen with two error messages. The first error message says: lsass.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. The second error message says: services.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. I then proceed to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore, and everything works fine again until the 64 updates re-appear in Windows Update. I can see two options: disable Auto-Updates or install each of the 64 updates one at a time until finding the troublesome update. Does anyone have any better ideas?

• Calling an svn update from a php script via a browser is not working

  Hey guys, I have two scripts. running an update and calling shell_exec('svn update') and shell_exec('svn st') running a mysqldump shell_exec('mysqldump params') The svn script is not running the update command, the svn st is printing results but not the svn update I tried to declare parameters when calling svn update eg 'svn update ' . dir . ' --username myuser --password mypasswd --non-interactive'; -- still nothing Played with most of the params If this is something related to binaries/permissions/groups, I don't see it. The mysqldump command works fine and is producing a file, so why isn't the svn updating the filesystem? Please do not advise using core SVN classes in PHP. This is not an option, I don't have complete control over the server and the module is not available. Thanks for your help, -hbt PS: important thing to mention here. The scripts works when called via the command line. It only fails when called via a web browser.

• Update Manager got stuck (but not frozen) while installing downloaded updates. What should I do?

  I have just gotten my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop computer reassembled after a trip back home and connected it to my parent's wireless Internet connection. The connection seems quite shaky (disconnects half the time, likely an ongoing issue with the wireless card I have installed), and it struggled to download updates because of the constant interruptions. Eventually, it managed to download the updated packages and started installing them. I got up and left it to do its work. When I came back, I saw it was still having trouble staying connected to the wireless (no surprise there), but then I noticed that it seemed like Update Manager had stopped making progress on the installation. I opened the Details pane to see what it was last doing: My guess was that the installation script for flashplugin-installer couldn't complete the download until I stabilized the Internet connection. I hooked my Ubuntu laptop up to my desktop via Ethernet and shared its wireless connection using this guide, and as I am typing this now from my desktop you can see that the connection issue was successfully worked around. However, even with a stable connection established, Update Manager seems "stuck" at its current position and won't go any further. It's not totally frozen, but I can't do anything beyond open/close the Details pane as the Cancel button is grayed out. I know it can cause big problems if updates are stopped during installation, but I'm at a loss as to how this situation should be handled. I'm sure it should finish normally if I can just find a way to restart Update Manager, but the question is how this should be approached. How can I safely get my updates to finish installing?

• Recommended SpamAssassin update channels?

  I'm currently using SpamAssassin on a couple of mail servers that I look after. SpamAssassin runs in the context of amavisd-new on those servers and with the usual bunch of plugins (FuzzyOCR, DCC, pyzor, razor). Currently the servers are getting their rule updates from the default SpamAssassin update channel (updates.spamassassin.org). Overall the setup seems to be reasonably effective but some types of spam seem to wander right through it even though I've made repeated attempts at training spamassassin. My guesstimate is that about 85%-90% of the spam that gets through policyd-weight makes it through the filters and it's been getting a lot worse recently as spammers are getting better at working their way through filters. Can someone recommend additional sources of filters to make SpamAssassin more effective? So far I've found OpenProtect's update channel but are there others worth looking at?

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• Apple Software Update Server for Windows

  We have just added a few iMacs to our system and we've found that they all want to download about 1.6 GB of updates... not so great when we only have limited monthly bandwidth! All of our Windows machines just use WSUS, which works great in our environment. It'd be nice if we could do the same for the iMacs without purchasing an additional Mac for a server role. So is it possible to run Apple's Software Update Server on a Windows server? Or do we need to look at purchasing a Mac in order to distribute updates across our clients? Alternatively, could we set up one of the iMacs to run the update server for the other iMacs whilst it is being used as a standard machine (ie, not installing OSX server, and keeping it available for staff to use)?
