• How to randomize a sorted list?

  Here's a strange question for you guys, I have a nice sorted list that I wish to randomize. How would i go about doing that? In my application, i have a function that returns a list of points that describe the outline of a discretized object. Due to the way the problem is solved, the function returns a nice ordered list. i have a second boundary described in math and want to determine if the two objects intersect each other. I simply itterate over the points and determine if any one point is inside the mathematical boundary. The method works well but i want to increase speed by randomizing the point data. Since it is likely that that my mathematical boundary will be overlapped by a series of points that are right beside each other, i think it would make sense to check a randomized list rather than iterating over a nice sorted one (as it only takes a single hit to declare an intersection). So, any ideas on how i would go about randomizing an ordered list?

• Zend Framework command line see errors

  I'm using a method outline by gregor (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/143320/create-cronjob-with-zend-framework) to create command line execution for parts of my application such as cron jobs, admin tasks, and the like. It works, however, no errors get reported when I create a new object that has not been defined (misspelling) and other such mistakes. I would have thought that php would report an error, but it fails silently. What is the reason for this? Is there a better way to achieve my goal? Or how can I implement this so that I can see errors? Many thanks! The aim is to move the "confirm cancel" interaction to the control rather than having it in the ViewModel. • when is java faster than c++ (or when is JIT faster then precompiled)?

  I have heard that under certain circumstances, Java programs or rather parts of java programs are able to be executed faster than the "same" code in C++ (or other precompiled code) due to JIT optimizations. This is due to the compiler being able to determine the scope of some variables, avoid some conditionals and pull similar tricks at runtime. Could you give an (or better - some) example, where this applies? And maybe outline the exact conditions under which the compiler is able to optimize the bytecode beyond what is possible with precompiled code? NOTE : This question is not about comparing Java to C++. Its about the possibilities of JIT compiling. Please no flaming. I am also not aware of any duplicates. Please point them out if you are.

• What is the best way in Silerlight to make areas of a large graphic clickable?

  In a Silverlight application I have large images which have flow charts on them. I need to handle the clicks on specific hotspots of the image where the flow chart boxes are. Since the flow charts will always be different, the information of where the hotspots has to be dynamic, e.g. in a list of coordinates. I've found article like this one but don't need the detail of e.g. the outline of countries but just simple rectangle and circle areas. I've also found articles where they talk about overlaying an HTML image map over the silverlight application, but it has to be easier than this. What is the best way to handle clicks on specific areas of an image in silverlight?

  how can I write more embedded " and ' in php ? For example, I dunno how to write this html complete element with all apex: As you can see, I use '' for the php string. Then inside, I use "", but then I need another level of apix and I dunno how to write that one in my php document.   Hi, A lot of interesting code/projects are implementations of protocols, eg SNMP. How are projects like these, which depend on implementing a certain format, developed? Is the process something like get the guidelines of the protocol and then implement code which follows it. For example, XML-RPC is about transmitting XML docs between client/server, so the documentation on this protocol must outline the structure of the XML documents and then the way the transportation between client and server works, so the coder will implement this sort of functionality (xml doc construction, networking between the client and server). Projects I am thinking of (not to develop) are C# libraries which can interpret .PSDs, make VHDs, etc. So if I was to develop a C# app to implement .AI files (Illustrator files), what would be the steps I would look at (such as contacting Adobe, etc)? Is this the way such projects are developed?

• Assign the results of a stored procedure into a variable in another stored procedure

  The title of this question is a bit misleading, but I couldn't summarize this very well. I have two stored procedures. The first stored procedure (s_proc1) calls a second stored procedure (s_proc2). I want to assign the value returned from s_proc2 to a variable in s_proc1. Currently, I'm calling s_proc2 (inside s_proc1) in this manner: EXEC s_proc2 @SiteID, @count = @PagingCount OUTPUT s_proc2 contains a dynamic query statement (for reasons I will not outline here). CREATE dbo.s_proc2 ( @siteID int, @count int OUTPUT ) AS DECLARE @sSQL nvarchar(100) DECLARE @xCount int SELECT @sSQL = 'SELECT COUNT(ID) FROM Authors' EXEC sp_ExecuteSQL @sSQL, N'@xCount int output', @xCount output SET @count = @xCount RETURN @count Will this result in @PagingCount having the value of @count? I ask because the result I am getting from s_proc1 is wonky. In fact, what I do get is two results. The first being @count, then the result of s_proc1 (which is incorrect).   For a login system in php would this be a suitable outline of how it would work: users types in username and password, clicks login button. Checks if user exists in database, if it does, then retrieve the salt for that user hash the password and salt (would this be done on the client or server side? I think client side would be better, but php is server side so how would you do this?) check value against value in database, if the values match then user has typed in correct password and they are logged in.

• Is it possible to use an incremental value within a variable name whilst declaring it within a loop?

  Hi, I'm creating function which will read different XML files each time that will contain different amounts of the same nodes. I have already created a loop which stores the ID of each node into an array, and now I want to create variables for each array member which store attributes of the node with each ID. Because the number of nodes will be different for every XML document my function reads, I cannot manually assign variables for the attributes of each node ID not knowing how many to assign, so I have created a loop which runs specific to the number of items I have stored in the array. Inside this loop I was hoping to have something like: for (i=0; i<array.length; i++) { var ID + i + width = exampleheight var ID + i + height = exampleheight } I know this doesn't work, but was trying to outline what I am looking to find out. Is it possible to use some kind of variable or random number when declaring a variable?

I have say a few thousand text documents and I want to create a web based system to serve them up to users in a OS X application. It's just a tiny aside for my family's small business, so it doesn't need to be amazing at the moment, we just want to see if we can can anyone to use it. I can't believe it can be that hard to do this? -Some sort of SQL backend database to manage permissions for users? -Download through the application? -For the moment just want to view the raw text files. -If we want people to pay, how would we go about incorporating that?   I am trying to use DocUtils and reStructuredText to comment SQL code. I can get this to work when I include the markup inside multi-line comments. I then use --Some text:: to introduce each block of code. I cannot get internal hyperlinks to work. I would like to write -- .. Step1_: but the parser ignores this because of the leading comment. Using a multi-line style also fails. Is there a way to get this to work? • C++ DLL which can inform a calling program about its progress

  My boss wants me to write a DLL in C++ (MSVC++2010) which can perform a Volume Shadow Copy which he can call from VB6 (or at a later point other languages) and which can give status updates back while it is not finished. He calls it "events". I have the feeling that I finally need to learn COM (I'd rather not ...) ... also, a callback function comes to my mind, but it's surely impossible to hand over function pointers from VB6 to C++? Can someone outline what I have to learn and how this can be accomplished, with or without COM?

  Hi, I making a eclipse view that is working with selected elements from other views. Let say I have opened a java file in the editor that has the following fields in it: private String world = " world!" private String hello = "hello" + world; When I select "hello" in the Outline view I'm able to get IFiled selection and I have access to it's properties, but what i need is the true value of the field ("hello world!"). • merging 3 source versioned trees into 1

  This is probably an easy question... I have 4 source versions of the same software in 4 different directories. I have just started using git for version control. To date, I have just been snapping a desperate copy rolling forward. I want to merge all versions (1.0.0.1, 1.0.0.2, 1.0.0.3, 1.0.1.0) together so that I will have a reference history. Opposed to just starting out with 1.0.1.0 as the initial version. I want to get this sort of thing right form the start. Can someone outline the basic steps to accomplish this? Thanks much, XO
