  • Print jobs to Epson Stylus Photo 640 all stopped after upgrade 10.04 to 12.04

    Upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 on 19th oct 2012. Now all print jobs end up in the print queue with the label "Stopped". Reinstalled the printer driver - it is gutenberg 5.2.8 pre1. Looking at "http://localhost:631/jobs" shows an error message by each stopped job as follows:"The PPD version (5.2.5 Simplified) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1." Found a long bug-fixing history in bugs.launchpad.net which seem to imply that this problem has been fixed. It seems to be a problem with the installation not updating the ppd files. Is there any workaround to fix this problem?

  • I can not print on Windows 7 shared printer

    For a while I can not print from my Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit pc on a Windows 7 shared printer. Before that everything was ok. The printer is HP LaserJet 1100. The error message is: "File "/usr/lib/cups/backend/smb" not available: No such file or directory" I have tried to reinstall the samba, I have configured the workgroup properly. I have tried to reinstall the printer on the Ubuntu machine with the proper address, or with lpd (I have read somewhere). If I restart the printer on the cups web interface ("Resume Printer") the problem seems to be solved, but not. (The printer seems to be idle, and if I want to print, I still get the error message.) I have checked the share rights on the Windows 7 pc, and I think it is ok.

From what I've read so far the Epson Stylus C84 won't print like this because it uses a little bit of color in even when you print only in black to prevent the ink heads from drying out. Is there ANY way that I can bypass this?

Does anyone know a way to print a whole series at once? Maybe something like a PDF reader with a "Print All" function? I know that IE has an option to print background but chrome does not . As the end user will print this off I do not want to find alternatives like a screen grab or save file etc I want to find a real solution to this . Can anyone offer any suggestions please ? Thanks

  • MVVM Light V4 preview (BL0014) release notes

    I just pushed to Codeplex an update to the MVVM Light source code. This is an early preview containing some of the features that I want to release later under the version 4. If you find these features useful for your project, please download the source code and build the assemblies. I will appreciate greatly any issue report. This version is labeled “V4.0.0.0/BL0014”. The “BL” string is an old habit that we used in my days at Siemens Building Technologies, called a “base level”. Somehow I like this way of incrementing the “base level” independently of any other consideration (such as alpha, beta, CTP, RTM etc) and continue to use it to tag my software versions. In Microsoft parlance, you could say that this is an early CTP of MVVM Light V4. Caveat The code is unit tested, but as we all know this does not mean that there are no bugs This code has not yet been used in production. Again, your help in testing this is greatly appreciated, so please report all bugs to me! What’s new? The following features have been implemented: Misc Various “maintenance work”. All WPF assemblies (that is .NET35 and .NET4) now allow partially trusted callers. It means that you can use them in am XBAP in partial trust mode. Testing Various test updates Added Windows Phone 7 unit tests Note: For Windows Phone 7, due to an issue in the unit test framework, not all tests can be executed. I had to isolate those tests for the moment. The error was reported to Microsoft. ViewModelBase The constructor is now public to allow serialization (especially useful on the phone to tombstone the state). ViewModelBase.MessengerInstance now returns Messenger.Default unless it is set explicitly. Previously, MessengerInstance was returning null, which was complicating the code. Two new ways to raise the PropertyChanged event have been added. See below for details. Messenger Updated the IMessenger interface with all public members from the Messenger class. Previously some members were missing. A new Unregister method is now available, allowing to unregister a recipient for a given token. RelayCommand RaiseCanExecuteChanged now acts the same in Windows Presentation Foundation than in Silverlight. In previous versions, I was relying on the CommandManager to raise the CanExecuteChanged event in WPF. However, it was found to be too unreliable, and a more direct way of raising the event was found preferable. See below for details. Raising the PropertyChanged event A very much requested update is now included: the ability to raise the PropertyChanged event in a viewmodel without using “magic strings”. Personally, I don’t see strings as a major issue, thanks to two features of the MVVM Light Toolkit: In the DEBUG configuration, every time that the RaisePropertyChanged method is called, the name of the property is checked against all existing properties of the viewmodel. Should the property name be misspelled (because of a typo or refactoring), an exception is thrown, notifying the developer that something is wrong. To avoid impacting the performance, this check is only made in DEBUG configuration, but that should be enough to warn the developers in case they miss a rename. The property name is defined as a public constant in the “mvvminpc” code snippet. This allows checking the property name from another class (for example if the PropertyChanged event is handled in the view). It also allows changing the property name in one place only. However, these two safeguards didn’t satisfy some of the users, who requested another way to raise the PropertyChanged event. In V4, you can now do the following: Using lambdas private int _myProperty; public int MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => MyProperty); } } This raises the property changed event using a lambda expression instead of the property name. Light reflection is used to get the name. This supports Intellisense and can easily be refactored. You can also broadcast a PropertyChangedMessage using the Messenger.Default instance with: private int _myProperty; public int MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } var oldValue = _myProperty; _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => MyProperty, oldValue, value, true); } } Using no arguments When the RaisePropertyChanged method is called within a setter, you can also omit the property name altogether. This will fail if executed outside of the setter however. Also, to avoid confusion, there is no way to broadcast the PropertyChangedMessage using this syntax. private int _myProperty; public int MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(); } } The old way Of course the “old” way is still supported, without broadcast: public const string MyPropertyName = "MyProperty"; private int _myProperty; public int MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(MyPropertyName); } } And with broadcast: public const string MyPropertyName = "MyProperty"; private int _myProperty; public int MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } var oldValue = _myProperty; _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(MyPropertyName, oldValue, value, true); } } Performance considerations It is notorious that using reflection takes more time than using a string constant to get the property name. However, after measuring for all platforms, I found the differences to be very small. I will measure more and submit the results to the community for evaluation, because some of the results are actually surprising (for example, using the Messenger to broadcast a PropertyChangedMessage does not significantly increase the time taken to raise the PropertyChanged event and update the bindings). For now, I submit this code to you, and would be delighted to hear about your own results. Raising the CanExecuteChanged event manually In WPF, until now, the CanExecuteChanged event for a RelayCommand was raised automatically. Or rather, it was attempted to be raised, using a feature that is only available in WPF called the CommandManager. This class monitors the UI and when something occurs, it queries the state of the CanExecute delegate for all the commands. However, this proved unreliable for the purpose of MVVM: Since very often the value of the CanExecute delegate changes according to non-UI events (for example something changing in the viewmodel or in the model), raising the CanExecuteChanged event manually is necessary. In Silverlight, the CommandManager does not exist, so we had to raise the event manually from the start. This proved more reliable, and I now changed the WPF implementation of the RaiseCanExecuteChanged method to be the exact same in WPF than in Silverlight. For instance, if a command must be enabled when a string property is set to a value other than null or empty string, you can do: public MainViewModel() { MyTestCommand = new RelayCommand( () => DoSomething(), () => !string.IsNullOrEmpty(MyProperty)); } public const string MyPropertyName = "MyProperty"; private string _myProperty = string.Empty; public string MyProperty { get { return _myProperty; } set { if (_myProperty == value) { return; } _myProperty = value; RaisePropertyChanged(MyPropertyName); MyTestCommand.RaiseCanExecuteChanged(); } } Logo update I made a minor change to the logo: Some people found the lack of the word “light” (as in MVVM Light Toolkit) confusing. I thought it was cool, because the feather suggests the idea of lightness, however I can see the point. So I added the word “light” to the logo. Things should be quite clear now. What’s next? This is only the first of a series of releases that will bring MVVM Light to V4. In the next weeks, I will continue to add some very requested features and correct some issues in the code. I will probably continue this fashion of releasing the changes to the public as source code through Codeplex.   • Unix printing a banner page on every print job

    I have a Data General server on unix that is printing a banner page on every print. I originally thought that the banner page was comming from the printer. As this is an HP printer, I used telnet to get to the jetadmin and then proceded to disable the banner page, but this did not solve the issue. I then went into the sysadm program to see if the TCPIP printing was set to print a banner page on print jobs, but I did not see any options to print a banner page. Any help or ideas on how to disable the banner page from printing in unix? Here is a banner page example print

  • How to use AD/GPO/Print Services to "push out" a new printer driver to replace a broken one? How did my server get a broken driver?

    Context: We have an AD/GPO-managed corporate network with a little over a hundred PCs running Windows 7 x64, and a few managed printers. Our Server2008R2 primary domain controller is configured as a print server for them all. Problem: After a recent windows update and restart (no printer driver updates were included) on the DC, a particular shared printer (Lexmark T650) has begin exhibiting some strange behavior. First, it prints a preceding and following blank page for almost every document, on jobs submitted by about half of client machines (no separator page is configured on the server or any of the clients I've seen). Second, whenever someone tries to access "Printing Preferences" on any client, they recieve the following error message (this happens everywhere, 100% of the time, and didn't happen before the update on the DC): Once they click "OK", the prefs screen appears (with no separator page selected) and everything seems fine. I'm not even sure if these two issues are related, but everyone seems affected by one or both of those issues. What I've Tried: I've been hesitant to un-deploy the problem printer, or remove it via GPO, as it's pretty heavily used. I've tried updating (via MS update and our internal WSUS server) client machines and the DC. No printer driver updates have appeared, and no number of updates or restarts on the server or the client seems to have achieved anything other than my boss getting grumpy that I'm bouncing the domain controller so often. I've tried deleting the drivers on the server, and re-installing them from the original source that has worked for the past year...no change. I've tried selecting "New Driver" for one of the shared printers on a client machine, running as domain admin, and pushed the latest driver found by MSupdate back up to the DC. This changed the version number of the driver recorded in the print server manager, but caused no change--on the client I pushed from, or on any other. The error still appears. Question: Why the heck is this happening? Obviously, I got a bad driver from somewhere, but how do I get rid of it? I don't know of any "roll back drivers" functionality for centrally managed print drivers like Windows offers for other devices. How would I a) get this issue resolved on a client, and b) push the fix to the other members of the domain?

    I am running Windows Server 2008 (not R2) for a print server and I have a program that needs to write to the UNC path of the network printer. I have found that anyone in the Print Operators group is able to write to the UNC path of the network printer, but standard users are not. I have tried adding the same permissions as the Print Operators group to a user, but when I try to write to the UNC path, I get Access Denied. I cannot add users to the Print Operators group because it gives too many permissions. What permissions do I need to set to allow standard users to print to the UNC path of a network printer?

  • Batch print, reprint and scan

    I am using ubuntu 13.10 with Epson wireless scanner/printer/fax WF 2540(It has an automatic document feeder- ADF). What I am trying to achieve is to be able to print with confidence over already populated A4 pages(hand drawn or otherwise). The idea is to get a batch of A4 pages grouped in a particular order and have them batch printed on specific parts of each page ,viewed on screen and edit/processed page by page. My idea was to batch scan the documents in order and display each scanned page to use that to judge/fit on-screen the coordinates for the output of each pages image... The easiest way to explain this is to look at these slide : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Kuhf6iBidTNUl3U1NtT0pGbnc/edit?usp=sharing I would like to have this automated as much as possible using this printer but I am open to other suggestions. Are there any other better printers that can automatically scan and print at the document that is being scanned...with an accurate positioning in relation to elements already printed on the page?? Are there any other forums I should be asking and looking for answer/suggestions on my case/dilema??

  • Is Cloud Print to blame for my inability to print?

    I have just moved to the Chrome beta (first 9.something and currently 10.0.648.127) on my Windows 7 64-bit machine, and my good web browsers (Firefox Beta and Chrome) can no longer print, and neither can Komodo Edit. The problem seems to have started when I tried to enable Google Cloud Print. Frustratingly, I can still print from IE 9 RC, and also from other machines in the office, which means the problem is entirely on this Windows machine. When I try to print from Chrome, first time I get the printer dialog, and once I click print, it waits, then pops up "Something went wrong", and each time after, it pops up with "No Printer Found". Under Firefox, I get "An unknown error occurred while printing", as does Komodo. I have printed from these applications before, and have even printed from Google Cloud Print. Once. But then it stopped. I really don't know where to go next in debugging this thing, and the Google results I see tend to be from 2007. I'm not ready for the paperless office yet, so please help!

    I want to have hidden options on my web site and be previewed only when the user chooses. I want to animate them from left and right (about 15%). At the moment I have them visible in my html but with width set at 0 and animate it at 15%. In these containers are many options which should disappear to the left/right (with slide effect). But I am not so sure that having all of this in my HTML so I am thinking to create them with jQuery, with 0 width and animating it to it's should be width and setting the other elements to 0 width. Is this approach good, or should I create them and hide the overflow so I would animate position. Or is there a better approach ??
