    I find these words in pptp client source : Summary by Peter Mueller PPTP is known to be a faulty protocol. The designers of the protocol, Microsoft, recommend not to use it due to the inherent risks. Lots of people use PPTP anyway due to ease of use, but that doesn't mean it is any less hazardous. The maintainers of PPTP Client and Poptop recommend using OpenVPN (SSL based) or IPSec instead. (Posted on [1]2005-08-10 to the [2]mailing list) But as far as i know, there are many people use PPTP as a VPN, because there is no need to install client on windows, what do you think about pptp ?

  • How can I prevent Ask.com Toolbar from being installed every time Java is updated?

    As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?

    Hi, Do you know any software or compilations that you recommend to handle drivers and codecs for newly formated computer? I am having problem gathering drivers and codecs when I format my computer or other's computer because we frequently misplace it's original drivers. I need an offline solution that doesn't need internet. Same for as the codec, when formating computer we frequently lost our codecs, are there codec packs you know that you would like to recommend? P.s. I had tried driver bot but it's only good when your online, I'm looking for a complete package that has all the driver to most common hardware (eg. Monitor, Sound, etc). Thanks!

  • Audio splitting and noise removal on Windows

    My mother has about 100 hours of audio in a mix of MP3 and WAV files, the digitized versions of her vinyl records. Each file contains about 5 songs with a few seconds of (noisy) pause between them. My mother needs software for Windows XP with which she can listen to the files, find the gaps manually, split the files at the gaps found, reduce noise on each song, and export the songs to individual MP3 files. My mother has very limited software user skills and affinity, and she doesn't speak English. The simpler the software, the better for her, even if noise reduction is worse than with a more sophisticated, but more complicated software. I'd prefer free software, freeware or shareware (which can do all above). Please recommend something much simpler than Audacity. The software should guide the user through the process, always showing the next few available steps, and being intuitive in the sense that there are only a few allowed actions and it's obvious what they are and how to activate them. Which software would you recommend?

  • Is it possible to have an external server within a company's firewall?

    Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101, but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? Their specific requirements are: For my application to authenticate against their Active Directory, and Only allow access to the application from within their network If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client?

  • Read the contents of a ComboBox (or any other windows control) [closed]

    I have a program that reads the contacts from my phone, but I can't export them from it. I'd like to use another program to read the contents of the controls on the original program. In this case, I would like to export the content of a dropdown list (combobox), containing these contacts. Can someone recommend a good program for this or recommend another method? I know I saw something for this last year on lifehacker.com in a collection of diagnostic tools, but I can't find it now.

  • Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

    I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).

  • Hardware for multipurpose home server

    Hi guys, I'm looking to set up a multipurpose home server and hoped you could help me with the hardware selection. First of all, the services it will provide: Hosting a MySQL database (for training and testing purposes) FTP server Personal Mail Server Home media server So with this in mind I've done some research, and found some viable solutions: A standard PC with the appropriate software (Either second hand or new) A non-solid state mini-ITX system A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system I've also noted the pros and cons of each system: A standard second hand PC with old hardware would be the cheapest option. It could also have lacking processing power, not enough RAM and generally faulty hardware. Also, huge power consumption heat generation and noise levels. A standard new PC would have top-notch hardware and will stay that way for quite some time, so it's a good investment. But again, the main problem is power consumption, heat generation and noise levels. A non-solid state mini-ITX system would have the advantages of lower power consumption, lower cost (as far as I can see) and long lasting hardware. But it will generate noise and heat which will be even worse because of the size. A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system would have all the advantages of a non-solid state mini-ITX but with minimal noise and heat. The main disadvantage is the read\write problems of flash memory. All in all I'm leaning towards a non-solid state mini-ITX because of the read\write issues of flash memory. So, after this overview of what I do know, my questions are: Are all these services even providable from a single server? To my best understanding they are, but then again, I might be wrong. Is any of these solutions viable? If yes, which one is the best for my purposes? If not, what would you suggest? Also, on a more software oriented note: OS wise, I'm planning to run Linux. I'm currently thinking of four options I've been recommended: CentOS, Gentoo, DSL (Damn Small Linux) and LFS (Linux From Scratch). Any thoughts on this? Any other distro you would recomend? Regarding FTP services, I've herd good things about FileZila. Anyone has any experience with that? Do you recommend it? Do you recommend something else? Regarding the Mail service, I know nothing about this except that it exists. Any software you recommend for this task? Home media, same as mail service. Any recommended software?     I am web developer and I have been doing a lot of server configurations and system administrative tasks lately I was wondering if someone could recommend books and tutorials that would help understand how things are done the right way. Though I mostly work with Apache and Nginx for configuring and maintaining my applications, my approach has been largely trial and error based with information off google and blogs. Could someone recommend books that explain how to get started with system administrative tasks (preferably in a tutorial fashion so that I may try and understand the workings of the system). I work mostly on Linux systems on EC2 Thanks in advance.

  • SSIS Reporting Pack – a performance tip

    SSIS Reporting Pack is a suite of open source SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports that provide additional insight into the SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 Catalog. After having used SSRS Reporting Pack on a real project for a few months now I have come to realise that if you have any sizeable data volumes in [SSISDB] then the reports in SSIS Reporting Pack will suffer from chronic performance problems – I have seen the “execution” report take upwards of 30minutes to return data. To combat this I highly recommend that you create an index on the [SSISDB].[internal].[event_messages].[operation_id] & [SSISDB].[internal].[operation_messages].[operation_id] fields. Phil Brammer has experienced similar problems himself and has since made it easy for the rest of us by preparing some scripts to create the indexes that he recommends and he has shared those scripts via his blog at http://www.ssistalk.com/SSIS_2012_Missing_Indexes.zip. If you are using SSIS Reporting Pack, or even if you are simply querying [SSISDB], I highly recommend that you download Phil’s scripts and test them out on your own SSIS Catalog(s). Those indexes will not solve all problems but they will make some of your reports run quicker. I am working on some further enhancements that should further improve the performance of the reports.   • .NET WPF Charting Control

    We're very close to wrapping up a WPF dashboarding application using SSRS (.RDLC files) and the Microsoft Report Viewer. For a number of reasons, this combination has turned out to be less than what we had hoped. One of the biggest problems is that the Microsoft Report Viewer is not a WPF control. We've had other problems as well. Our app consists of at least 5 tabs and each tab has at least 4-5 charts on it. All the charts update on their own timed schedules (like every 15-30 minutes). For the next version I'd like to explore other .NET charting tools for WPF. Performance is absolutely critical. As is resource usage. The tool must support WPF and as many chart types as possible. Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) charting tools they have experience with? We own Telerik and I've dabbled with their charting control. At the 30K foot level, it seems quite nice.

  • Website Hosting/Registration [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am planning to launch a website down soon. I wanted to know what solutions are available for hosting and registration. Starting with domain registration. Any site you have used/preferred ? I am considering either godaddy or 123reg. Does it even make any difference which you choose? Is there any fine print i need to worry about. I am based in UK , not sure if that helps in resolving any issues if encountered. Does my hosting need to be done at the site i purchased my registration? If not , will there be any transfer fees if i change my hosting? Can I just register the name now and worry about hosting later? At the moment, I plan to have it up and running using either some sort of a tool or a template and perhaps put the bells and whistles down the line. I understand 123 has its own builder tool available, There are a few solutions suggested like wordpress,drupal & jhoomla... I am a C++ developer , not a web programmer, but I do feel the need to open the hood up and make changes if i see fit. So I guess I am looking for a solution where I can easily drag-drop widgets I need and when the time comes customize it. Which CMS would you recommend. Extras: What extras do you need to get , I was suggested to get hold of whois privacy to keep the spambots away, anything else you guys would recommend I keep my eyes open before I sign the dotted line.
