• CPU / Affinity mask problem in SQL 2005

  Hi folks, Having a problem with a SQL Server which was virtualised. The CPU mask was set on the physical host for some reason and now advanced options are not available. So I need to reconfigure the CPU affinity mask settings - which are advanced options, so this is blocked because of the affinity mask issue. I've tried doing this from the SQL server in single user command line mode, I've googled and found lots of people with similar problems but no real solution. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Sample commands and output from query analyser below. sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1 GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO sp_configure 'affinity mask', 0x00000000 GO RECONFIGURE GO ----------------------------------------- Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. • Use AssignUserId as variable in Apache MPM ITK

  I heard that the MPM-ITK module for Apache can change Apache server's behaviour to access some folder / file using the UID or GID from the default UID (www-data) into a given UID on the configuration. For example: <IfModule mpm_itk_module> AssignUserId user group </IfModule> Is it possible to make the username and group a variable? I want to make Apache access the /home folder as its owner. For example /home/me can only be accessed by the user me, while /home/you can only be accessed you.

• RAID - software vs. hardware

  I have always used hardware based raid because it (IMHO) it's on the right level (feel free to dispute this) and that OS failures are more common to me than hardware issues. Thus if the OS fails the raid is gone and so is the data, where on a hardware level regardless of OS the data remains. However on a recent Stack Overflow podcast they stated they would not used hardware raid as the software raid is better developed and thus runs better. So my question is, is there any reasons to choose one over the other?

• TV won't go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. I ran it for several hours after that. If I have a TV program scheduled to record when I select standby I get a window (the Pinnacle TV software) asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes, never going into standby. I added that detail as it shows the standby process is starting. [This problem also happens if a TV program is not scheduled, so the scheduler task in not running/in memory. This problem happens regardless of whether I'm not watching TV. This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running (it usually isn't, I'm using Pinnacle to watch TV).] I looked at "How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907477 - ACPI is enabled, and "standby" is an option in "Power Options Properties." So it appears to be setup correctly. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• Elantech touchpad: Right + Left click doesn't work

  This is very common problem and till yet unresolved. The Elantech driver disables right button + left button touchpad click. In the result you cannot aim and shoot in games also you cannot code that kind of interaction in your applications. Driver detects LMB+RMB click but it somehow filters it. I could not find correct entry in the registry to disable that obviously horrible setting. Please notice: 1. I have the latest drivers the problem existed with really old ones, a year old, on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 ones and current. 2. It has nothing to do with the Windows or hardware but only with the Elantech driver settings. 3. Driver detects LMB+RMB click - it is shown on a dynamic icon on a task bar also uninstalling drivers fix the problem, but then you can't use your touchpad fully.

• Creating a DVD-player compatible movie file

  I've created encoded a MPEG-4 file with mplayer and placed it on a DVD. The file is identified as RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 320 x 240, 25.00 fps, video: FFMpeg MPEG-4, audio: uncompressed PCM (stereo, 96000 Hz) I've tried playing it on a Samsung 1080p DVD player and the codecs were not recognised. There are no firmware upgrades available for my region (Romania). How should I pick the codecs to make sure that the files are readable by this DVD player? Update: The command line I used is similar to mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1 -oac copy -o movie.avi mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=2 -oac copy -o movie.avi

• Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad? [closed]

  I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem. • Error - "IR Hardware not detected" - but it's installed/working

  I am trying to do: Settings-TV-Set up TV signal. During this process I am getting the error "IR Hardware not detected." With the remote, I can select the "try again" button (to re-detect) and it tries again, so the remote works. Plugging in the "IR blaster" doesn't change anything. (I wouldn't expect any difference, but I read a post which said you needed that. I will get Media Center to change channels if I can get that working - but first things first.) I was able to do the setup months ago when I had cable. and everything was fine. I just got DirecTV. (BTW - During the above process, Media Center detects the signal coming in on channel 3. Windows XP Media Center SP3. The TV Tuner card is a Pinnacle TCTV HD PCI. Everything - and I mean everything - has the latest firmware and drivers - as of 4 months ago when I fixed a different problem. So I DON"T WANT TO HEAR the standard answer to check drivers/firmware. • Can Excel sorts be saved and used again?

  On an Excel 2007 worksheet, I have several tables, each sharing the same columns. For every table, I sort in several particular ways, depending on the task at hand. It gets tedious going to the Data tab, clicking Sort, unchecking the "my data has headers" checkbox, then add/removing the columns and ordering sort criteria. Is it possible to: * Save a given sort criteria (a named sort)? * Apply the sort against any selected range? * Create a button to execute each saved sort? In the end, I would create 4 or 5 named sorts and a button for each on the worksheet. Then would be able to select any range of rows, from any table, and click one of the sort buttons. The sort would execute.

  I have a series of scripts setup to backup my Exchange. The edb file is 4.7 gigabytes, but the First Storage Group folder itself is 50+ gigabytes due to many, many log files for each day going back to 2009. Is there any way -- I've Googled and haven't found anything -- to notify Exchange when I've completed a full backup, and have it purge its log files? According to this and this, end backup should cause Exchange to "flush the transaction logs for that storage group" but only "if a successful backup of a storage group occurred", which leaves my question as: What constitutes a "successful backup", and why is what I'm doing not it?

• Media Center setup won't complete for watching TV

  I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. This problem occurs on all channels, live or recorded. The bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro to watch TV and there is no skipping/pausing (and not green on bottom). I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing TV okay (with the new DirecTV) before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Hardware/Software: Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card (coax cable from DirecTV tuner), ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

• Active Directory Support Folder Redirection AND Portable Home Directories?

  Does anyone here know if Active Directory will support the use of both Windows Folder Redirection and Mac OS X's Portable Home Directories for synchronizing a user's files to a remote share? I want to synchronize my user's files with a remote share as a way of backing up their data. This is fairly straightforward if a user has only a Windows computer or only a Mac computer. However, will Active Directory support a situation in which a user has both types of computers or they have a Mac on which they're running Windows within Parallels? If I configure a remote share via Group Policies for their Windows files and then configure a different share for their Mac files via ADUC, when they change a file on either computer, will AD know which computer the file was changed on and synchronize that file with the appropriate remote folder? • Simple issue regarding date formats.

  We are hosting a website that when browsed to locally loads up fine but if you browse to it externally you get Conversion from string "1/15/2010 8:46:01 AM" to type 'Date' is not valid. What do I change on the server to fix this. When browsing the site on the server it works, although I am logged into the server as a different user to that in IIS. Any ideas this is actually starting to cause a head ache now.

• Is there an application I can run that will tell me how fast my computer is running?

  At work I log into a virtual Windows machine. I'm told it runs as fast as a PC, but I'm skeptical. Is there an application I can run on the machine that will tell me how faster the machine is actually running? It would be nice if it ran on Windows and on Mac. Updating with more details -- I was asked "why does it matter" -- here's why: It matters because I'm a programmer and I need as much speed (CPU and memory) as possible to do my work. IMO, the virtual machine is noticeably slower than a basic $800 PC would be, but I need a way a proving it. Websites like Bandwidthtest.com can show me my internet speed, so I'm wondering if there's an app that can test my computer's speed.

• install SSH2 (server?) on FreeBSD

  At work we have freeBSD testmachine. And we have a PHP script that uses SSH2 protocol to connect with the freeBSD server. With this script I'm not able to connect to the freeBSD server. I wanted to install it, but I'm not sure where to find the right source to compile. The connection can be made with a different machine, but isntalling a new distro isn't the solution right now. I can connect to the server over ssh, but not with the ssh2 protocol in PHP (http://nl.php.net/ssh2).

• File permissions question

  I just switched my site's server from Windows to Linux, and am finally able to control file permissions from my ftp. So, seeing that all permissions were 705 by default (and not wanting just anyone to have permission to execute), I went and changed everything to 744. Now, gif and jpg links don't work, pdf download links don't work, php links don't load, and mov files don't play. Conversely, all html files work perfectly. Setting things back doesn't seem to help. Even setting to 777 gets me nowhere. Any ideas on what might be going wrong? I've been googling file permissions all day (solved that problem with the Windows-Linux switch, which has bred a new problem), and I don't think anything I can find has escaped my attention. • Program can't start because GX6050R.dll is missing

  I'm trying to install a program on a Windows 7 machine, but in the end of the installation process, when I press "Finish", I get an error message saying: Actrix.exe - System Error The program can't start because GX6050R.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I have tried reinstalling the program, restarting the computer (before reinstalling) etc., but I can't get this to work. The sites I find when I Google this suggest I download some "Error repair tool" (not happening). Any clues as to how I can fix this?

• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• What parts of a motherboard age, and how can I choose one with the longest possible life?

  I have a home-built computer that's probably about four years old. I realize this probably seems ancient to some folks, but computers have no moving parts (except the fans), so theoretically they should last a long time, if I still have software to run on them. A few weeks ago, it began blue-screening and freezing up, with various error messages. It almost always happened about five minutes after startup. I assumed that the video card was overheating, since the cheap little fan on the heatsink died, so I replaced it. Long story short, after upgrading the video drivers a couple of times and performing some other troubleshooting, I remembered that the last time this happened, I took out the memory SIMS and cleaned the contacts with a gum eraser, so I did that again (noting that the SATA cables were very close to the chips on the SIMS). I re-routed the cables and reinstalled the SIMS. So far, so good; the machine has been trouble-free since. But blue-screens are distressing; I never know what bits are being chewed up in my OS installation when something like this happens. So I'm wondering if I'm choosing my components properly. If it matters, it's an Intel D915GAG motherboard and Corsair memory, but what I'm wondering is, should I be looking for certain characteristics when I choose these parts for my next computer, so that I can avoid this problem in my next build?

• How long should cobbler sync take to run?

  I have setup a Fedora 13 minimum install inside of a VirtualBox VM, and am following this tutorial to setup Cobbler: PXE virtual network with Virtualbox and Cobbler When I go to run the initial cobbler sync the command seems hang. How long should it take to run this command? Since I did a minimum install of Fedora 13 am I missing a application that would prevent cobbler from executing the sync properly?

• Excel cell references not updating when referenced cells are sorted.

  There are two tables, each with 75 entries. Each entry in the 2nd table calls an entry in the first table a parent. One of my 2nd table columns contains the "Parent Price", referencing the Price column in the first table, such as "=E50". Table 1 Id Price 1001 79.25 1002 8.99 1003 24.50 Table 2 Id Price Parent Price 2001 50.00 =B2 2002 2.81 =B3 2003 12.00 =B4 The problem is when I sort the first table, none of the second table's "Parent Price" references are updated, and still point to the =E50 cell, which is no longer the correct parent. I don't want to have to name the cells if possible. What style of formula do I enter in the parent price column so that they properly track the cells in the referenced table?
