• .NET & ASP vs PHP

  Earlier today I asked wether it would be a good idea to develop websites using C#. Most of the answers pointed towards .NET and ASP. Currently I develop with PHP. I've dabbled with Python and RoR but I always come back to PHP. This is the first time I've looked at .NET and ASP. A bucket load of Google searches later I'm not really seeing much support for ASP online but then it all seems a bit Biased towards PHP/Apache/MySQL. It looks like there's a fair amount of .NET and ASP folk around here so I figured it's worth a shot asking for their input in attempt to try and address the balance in my own head. It can't all be bad. What advantages are there to .NET and ASP over PHP?

• Stripes for Java Web Dev, is it worth learning ? Is it easier ? how it compared to Struts ?

  I am tired of Java web, and started to learn Ruby on Rails because of that, but I just found this Framework and it looks promessing... But I am not in the mood to study more Java, so I would like to know if this one is worth my time ( that would mean, less configuration and action mapping and so on) Is it better then Struts 2(WebWorks) ??? because those are way better then Struts 1 but still not a RoR. Spring MVC ? I would like a Hands On Opnion, not a specs compare. Thanks !

• fubar'd a ruby installation on ubuntu, need helping purging it for reinstall

  i originally followed these steps to get a RoR environmentgoing: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RubyOnRails that worked. then i put 1.9.2 on here. then i decided i want the original setup, did a "whereis ruby" and deleted those directories manually. that fubar'd my ruby installation. i can't use the repository to what i originally had. how can i purge ruby from completely and start fresh? right now the specific error is this: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:11:in `require': no such file to load -- thread (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:11 from /usr/bin/gem1.8:8:in `require' from /usr/bin/gem1.8:8 tipu@tipu_ubuntu:~$

• Ruby on Rails, PHP or C++ for web social network

  Hello, I have chosen diploma work in university. It's a mini social network. But now I am really stuck with which technology I should stick. I am average at C++ ISAPI web services development, below average PHP(had few projects with it) and new to Ruby and its framework RAILS. I have a deadline 1.5 month to develop it(about 5 hours every day after my full time job). Also I heard that its very easy to learn and develop with Ruby on Rails. Considering C++ I know that I have to do lots of coding and work by myself and PHP looks almost the same to me. So I am looking for you skilled developers advise what would you do in my position? Learn RoR, stick with C++ or PHP or maybe use something else?

  Hi All, I have 2 years of experience in Ruby on Rails. I have basic knowledge (Very Basic) of mysql such as data insertion, join, select from more than one table. But now i want to know more about it cause my friends are having trouble in interview when ask questions like 1] What is the trigger. 2] which trigger call when 3] what's views in mysql? etc....... are this questions for developers?is it basic database? Also what other things developer should know having experience of 2 years or more. I am in double mind as i have over two years of exp. in ruby and i am learning new thing everyday in ruby only. if someone ask me to rate yourself i can't give more than 5 out of 10 in ROR only.   I'm about to begin a Ruby on Rails project and I'd love to hear how others go through the process of starting an application design. I have quite a bit of experience with RoR, but don't have that many starting from scratch with only a vision experiences and would appreciate the wisdom of others who've been there. I'm looking for an order of events, reasons for the order, and maybe why each part is important. I can think of a few starting points, but I'm not sure where it's best to begin Model design and relationships (entities, how they relate, and their attributes) Think of user use-cases (or story-boards) and implement the minimum to get these done Create Model unit-tests then create the necessary migrations and AR models to get the tests to pass Hack out the most basic version of the simplest part of your application and go from there Start with a template for a rails app (like http://github.com/thoughtbot/suspenders) Do the boring gruntwork first (User auth, session management, ...) ...

• Tracking DB changes with Zend Framework?

  I am trying to decide between the Zend Framework and Ruby On Rails for my web application. If I go with ZF, I need the following: A way to incrementally track changes to my database, as with RoR's migration feature (001_something.sql, 002_something_else.sql). A place to put SQL for the next release of my software. At work in our custom PHP solution, we just have release.sql, which gets run, archived, and blanked out upon release. ZF has Zend_Db_Schema_Manager, which does the same thing, but I'm not interested as its not official, complete, or maintained. Is there an official mechanism that ZF provides for doing something similar to what I described? EDIT I ended up going with Rails. Nothing compares.

• Is Python a beginner language or is it robust?

  I am already working on some software in Python but I'm having one of those days where I step back and reflect just to make sure I'm not spinning my wheels. I know that Twitter launched with RoR because it was fast to build. Then they almost moved into another language in 2008 because of scalability issues. This has caused me to step back and introspect for a moment to make sure I'm heading down the right path. I've read in some tutorials and other places that Python is "a great first language" or a "nice beginner language" as though it's not capable of larger tasks. I look at it as Python can do what Java or ASP can but with about 1/4th of the code, not to mention I don't have to build or compile, etc. I've read that Java runs quite a few times faster than Python which is important of course, but then I read everywhere that hardware keeps getting cheaper and there are projects like Unladen Swallow by Google to make Python faster. Should I be concerned or is this just the remnants of Java developers?

• Detecting regional settings (List Separator) from web

  After having the unpleasant surprise that Comma Seperated Value (CSV) files are not necessarily comma-separated, I'm trying to find out if there is any way to detect what the regional settings list separator value is on the client machine from http request. Scenario is as follows: A user can download some data in CSV format from web site (RoR, if it matters). That CSV file is generated on the fly, sent to the user, and most of the time double-clicked and opened in MS Excel on Windows machine at the destination. Now, if the user has ',' set as the list separator, the data is properly arranged in columns, but if any other separator (';' is widely used here) is set, it all just gets thrown into a single column. So, is there any way to detect what separator is used on the client machine, and generate the file accordingly? I have a sinking feeling that it is not, but I'd like to be sure before I pass the 'can't be done, sorry' line to the customer :)

  I want to build a scalable dynamic Web Application. I have never programmed an Object Oriented language before. Or, let's just say I am completely new to programming, because the previous experiences aren't worth talking about. I know I have a really big task ahead of me ^^ but I wanted to get into coding for the last 10 years and now that I'm finally doing it, I would like to know how to get there in the most efficient way. Any good books/tutorials you could recommend? Would it really make sense to learn other, better documented languages before learning RoR? Or would it be better for a beginner to learn C# with ASP.NET first? Thank you for your help in advance ;-)

• How to append to an XML response an error attribute using Ruby on Rails 3?

  I am trying to implement REST APIs, so in my RoR3 application I have XML responses. Before to pass to a consumer the XML, I wuold like to check if there are errors and, if so, send back a response with error messages. I read "Active Record Validations and Callbacks" guides on the RoR website, but it seems not work in my case. I extract from the database a resource doing @response = User.find_by_id(1) and I wuold like, if possible, to add error to it. Seeing some examples I have seen how to report errors in an XML file format.xml { render :xml => @response.errors } but how I can add append new errors to the @response? Maybe something like this: errors.add(:password, "is invalid")

• jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 ready for enterprise?

  I am trying to introduce RoR to my company and I have two ways of doing so in my mind: (1) rails/ibm_db2/passenger/DB2 - which is my preferable way but it is not really supported by company's infrastructure. (2) jruby/activerecord-jdbc/tomcat/DB2 - probably easier way to migrate relying on current infrastructure and java libs IF I have a proof this is an enterprise ready technology. Does anyone know if there is any prof that jruby/aciverecord-jdbc-adapter/DB2/tomcat is mature enough for production? Are there any problems I should know about during Development/Deployment/Runtime? My webapp is for a company intranet, around 200~400 active users.

• Is there are standard way to store a database schema outside a python app

  I am working on a small database application in Python (currently targeting 2.5 and 2.6) using sqlite3. It would be helpful to be able to provide a series of functions that could setup the database and validate that it matches the current schema. Before I reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd look around for libraries that would provide something similar. I'd love to have something akin to RoR's migrations. xml2ddl doesn't appear to be meant as a library (although it could be used that way), and more importantly doesn't support sqlite3. I'm also worried about the need to move to Python 3 one day given the lack of recent attention to xml2ddl. Are there other tools around that people are using to handle this?

  Having moved from java to ruby, I am struggling to find a good IDE for ruby. I used eclipse on java, so I tried Aptana Studio (previously Radrails), but its not even half as good. Currently I am trying out Netbeans for Ruby. Please suggest me the best RoR IDE out there. I believe TextMate is universally accepted as the best editor on Mac OS X. I am looking for windows. So far it seems netbeans and e-texteditor are worth a try.

  I'm currently trying to write a script in RoR to go into my PGAdmin database and look at a list of users, THEN ignore users that have an image path but look at users who don't have one and then upload a link of a generic photo into their row. My database looks Something like this: id integer | name | email | image path | 12 Bob [email protected] www.faces.org 81 Sally [email protected] 114 Mark [email protected] www.faces.org How would I start grabbing those users, I only have 103 users right now, but I also need to think about scaling for the future. • In Ruby on Rails Routing I Would Like to Use Dash `-` Instead of Underscore `_`

  I would like all the URLs for my web applications to use dash - instead of underscore _ for word separators. I'm surprised about a couple of things really: Google et al. continue to distinguish them. That RoR doesn't have a simple global configuration parameter to map - to _ in the routing. Or does it? I found a few questions here and elsewhere, but the best solution I've seen is to use :as or a named route. That's quite annoying. So I'm thinking of modifying the Rails routing to check for that global config and change - to _ before dispatching to a controller action. But before I do that, I'm hoping someone can save me the trouble! Thanks in advance for any help, or even confirmation that my approach makes sense. I'd submit it back. BTW, I'm currently on 2.3.8, but hope to migrate to 3 soon.

Anyone know how to do it? In both, offset is an unsigned 32-bit integer and shift is a signed integer value. C_FLAG is a bool. So I'd like to ask if there was an assorted list like what's new docs of Python's - clear and concise to the point. Btw, please no screencasts.   Hi, I am trying to migrate to MVC from conventional n tier applications. I am very much used to creating websites in the regular manner. But i find it difficult to adapt to MVC environemnt. • How do I find the Recaptcha ID?

  I've been stuck on something for the past day. I'm building a RoR bot, and part of it involves signing up for an email account with mail.com. I've automated all the filling out of the form, apart from the captcha (Recaptcha). I'll be using the deathbycaptcha Ruby gem. However, in order to have the captcha solved, I'll need to get either its ID or its URL. While this shows up when I "enable form details" with the Firefox Web Developer toolbar, it doesn't seem to be in the source. How can I find it out? I'm using Watir. Thanks! Joe

  im trying to install nokogiri to use in a ruby on rails application to read xml files, ive been following the instructions on their page for home brew 0.9, when i try and install the libivcon from source as bellow wget http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/libiconv/libiconv-1.13.1.tar.gz tar xvfz libiconv-1.13.1.tar.gz cd libiconv-1.13.1 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/Cellar/libiconv/1.13.1 make sudo make install i get the following error `make: *** No rule to make target `install'.
