• Are there any open source projects for car engine sound simulation?

  I have been thinking how to create realistic sound for a car. The main sound is the engine, then all kind of wind, road and suspension sounds. Are there any open source projects for the engine sound simulation? Simply pitching up the sample does not sound too great. The ideal would be to something that allows me to pick type of the engine (i.e. inline-4 vs v-8), add extras like turbo/supercharger whine and finally set the load and rpm. • How to have similar sound quality in Banshee and Rhythmbox (or Totem) ?

  Hello, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 6390G. With its 5.1 embedded sound system, this laptop is good at playing music using in-built speakers. The soundcard is an HDA-Intel ALC888. When I use Rhythmbox (version 0.13.1) (or Totem) (and the in-built speakers), the sound is deep, warm, great. But with Banshee (version 1.8.0.), it is always crispy and basically of poor quality when the Banshee equalizer is disabled. I know that it is possible to fine tune Banshee sound using the equalizer, but after some time spent trying to properly adjust it without success, I decided to ask this question on askubuntu.com. Is there a way to get the same sound quality in Banshee as in Rhythmbox (or Totem) or keeping on adjusting Banshee equalizer is the only alternative to try to solve this problem ? (If the answer is the latter, is there anyone who would be kind enough to provide me his equalizer settings ?) Thanks all for your answers.

• How do I force the system to look for new sound devices?

  I have a small flat screen TV (Toshiba) that I often connect via HDMI to my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv4) and use as a computer monitor. When I do this, I prefer to use the TV's speakers, particularly when I'm watching video, because the sound quality is much better. However, when I connect the HDMI cable after turning on my computer (rather than having it plugged in before booting up), Sound Settings does not list the TV as an output device, and I am forced to reboot. I was curious if there is an easier solution to this, perhaps a CLI command to check for new sound outputs. Does anyone know of something like this or have another solution? To clarify, I believe this is a software problem. The HDMI always works, and I can switch my desktop over to the TV at any time. The issue is that, if the HDMI wasn't connected during start up, the TV will not appear as an output option in the Sound Settings GUI. So, unless I'm mistaken, my question is not HDMI specific, but rather a general usage question about manipulating sound settings from the command line.

• Is there a way of leveling/compressing the sound system-wide?

  As a Laptop user, I'm sure that a lot of people, even the ones using Netbooks would have already gone through this problem. Especially when listening to podcasts, and using it as an example, the sound might have loud moments and quiet moments, one person speaking loud and the other speaking very quiet in the same episode. Thereby, I always wanted the sound to be compressed system-wide, and I just noted the other day, that in Windows, some Realtek drivers already offer this function. We have already a pulseaudio plugin for equalization system-wide, and although it still has problems like not letting us change its values and listen the change in real time, or cracking the sound while changing pulse volume, I do love it and use it. Now I'm just missing something to keep the sound around 0db (or near the volume level you're using) as a leveler plugin for pulseaudio. Any suggestion?

• Asus K50I sound issues

  I have an Asus K50IJ (Bestbuy) laptop and have issues with my sound. Speakers themselves work fine but when I plug into the headphone jack it auto mutes the front channel and no sounds comes out of either the speakers or the headphones. If I then unmute the channel I get sound from both the speakers and the headphones. alsamixer shows the Headphone channel as all grayed out. /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I have tried snd-hda-intel model="asus-laptop" and snd-hda-intel model="asus" In Sound Preferences I have gone to output and changed the Connector to 'Analog Headphones' that results in no sound from either speakers or headphones. • Gvim displays wrong font when set from _gvimrc, but correct font when set from menus

  This question applies to gVim running on Windows. I have the following line in my _gvimrc set guifont=Lucida_Sans_Typewriter:h11:cANSI When gVim starts up, it strange italicizes everything! A call to :set guifont shows that things seem to have been set correctly, as it returns guifont=Lucida_Sans_Typewriter:h11:cANSI Then I manually select Edit-Select Font ... and then choose Lucida Sans Typewriter, and font size 11 and submit, the italics disappear and it looks fine. I've posted my _gvimrc for reference at http://vim.pastey.net/132157 So my questions are: Why am I getting different results from setting it manually and from _gvimrc? Is there a way to capture the command that the dialog box is sending back to the program? It might include extra commands that I'm missing.

• IE font size decrease does not cause select box height to decrease

  I have a font resize function on my page which increases the font size via javascript for the entire page. This works fine in most browsers except IE. When decreasing the font size after increasing it, the select boxes new height does not decrease, even though the font size is decreasing on it. Instead the smaller font appears to be padded with white space. Any ideas as to what IE is doing here, and a work around?

  I have HP Pavilion dv-2051et notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Recently the sound of my notebook completely went off and I poked up Windows sound settings and IDT HD Sound panel to bring it back, but to no avail (trust me, I looked at every setting). Then I made a system restore to the point located just before Vista SP2 was installed. The sounds came back. Afterwards, I installed Vista SP2 again, and the sounds went off again. SP2 installation causes complete loss of sounds of my notebook. What can I do to overcome this problem? I don't want to stay with SP1 but installing SP2 brings me a huge problem. Anyone experienced this lately? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

• Share a USB sound card over a network/bluetooth (Mac & PC)

  I've been wondering how I can stream audio to an external Edirol USB sound card, wirelessly, on both Mac and PC. I'm not looking for high quality transmission, just to play mp3s from my Mac laptop to a USB sound card that is attached to two very nice balanced studio reference monitors. Is there any way I can firstly power the sound card box, and secondly, provide with an audio stream along it's USB input. I've looked at the Belkin USB hub, and I have a Time Capsule with the AirPort interface inside. These things seem to do vaguely what I want but when it comes to audio, the specifications are less clear. Any suggestions very welcome.

• Sound problems in Windows 7

  hi! I hope I reached the correct forum for this question. I have a media computer with a third party audio card (Soundblaster audigy SE) I use a coaxial digital audio cable connected to a Onkyo TX SR508. if I use normal audio, the sound seems very low, I have to set volume atleast to 62 in my amplifier to hear anything, however if I set digital SPDIF I have no means of controlling the audio volume from the PC (only from the amplifier) and this can be nasty if I toggle between movies that uses Digital AC3/THX and movies wihtouth, if I look at movies capable of AC3 the volume gets VERY loud if amp is set to 62, 32 is more than enough volume when using passthrough. so this bothers me is how can I get the same amount of volume with or without digital output? I tried also other soundcards, internal red light Digital audio cable... if I connect to my television I get ok sound on any sound source via HDMI... help :)

• Font Book does not Install all Fonts

  My Mac decided to delete all but 19 fonts, which is fairly annoying. It didn't really delete them, as in I still have the original files in the /Library/Fonts folder, but they've disappeared from Font Book, so I can't use them. Now, Apple says that you can select a folder to install all fonts in that folder, but when I try that, the spinning wheel (not the beach ball) comes up in the lower right hand corner for a few seconds and then leaves, without installing any fonts. The same thing happens if I use the + sign in the menu bar, select multiple, or if I try validating and then installing (actually, that installs one font). Is there any way to mass-install these fonts or will I have to install them one by one? Comp info: Mac OS X 10.5.8 running Font Book 2.1 (123).

• Scrolling mouse sets windows sound volume

  Suddenly, when I use the scroll wheel of my mouse, it changes the windows sound volume level. I have a HP DV6-2030SD laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and a Zolid p50622 mouse. When I use the scroll function of the mouse pad of the laptop, it does not adjust the sound level. I don't have any special mouse drivers installed, just the standard windows drivers. When I scroll, I see the HP sound level screen: It doesn't do it always, but when it does, it prevents the current window to scroll, which is really annoying. Rebooting doesn't help. I've tried to put the USB dongle in a different port, but this doesn't help either. Any advise on how I can fix this?

• Strange sound from Laptop, Microphone, Speakers or Soundcard?

  I have recently purchased a second hand computer. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it on purchasing, however recently I have noticed a small issue. Any time I play sound or listen through my headphones, I can hear what seems to be the CPU working (ie when beginning a new task, there is a small crackling). Also if I tap my laptop I can hear the sound louder, as if it is being picked up by the mic and then playing that sound in real time through the speakers or headphones. I have tried reading other topics but cannot find an answer to this question. These are the specs I am running on; Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10Ghz 2.10Ghz I hope someone can help me with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

  Right now I'm trying desperately to get @font-face to work in my website. This is the code I am using right now. @font-face { font-family: romeral; src: url(fonts/romeral.otf ) format("opentype"); } And then.... h1 { font-size:2.5em; font-family:romeral; } I am using the font Romeral. I've tried using other fonts like Ripe, and they work. I've made sure I don't have any spelling errors.   I've had this problem in a lot of different webs. You have a font which has different anti-aliasing options, the designer uses the same font with different anti-aliasing options on different parts of the text on the web. So there is a difference between some elements. In this case I have sharp, crisp, strong and smooth. I've used a font generator to get the code to access it via @font-face. Even so, I also have the original .otf if important to know. Is there a method to access this? • Re-enabling audio on an iMac

  Hello guys, I know Super User is not a 'tech support' forum, so I will try to make it short: my computer's sound does not work anymore. I have asked for support on the Apple board but I feel a bit on my own. To summarize, the Sound Panel of my iMac does not display any outgoing channel (headphones or internal speakers). It does not work on Windows either. Contrary to what it may seem, I have the feeling that it is not a hardware issue (and that GarageBand is somehow interfering). If you have an idea to solve the problem, please share. Making it work again is a lost cause without sending it back to Apple, so the question I'm asking is: What is the best workaround (cheap Firewire sound card?) for getting my sound back? Thanks.

  I am trying to set the font-weight for an element based on the font that gets chosen. For example, I may be trying to do something like this: h1 { font-family: Arial Narrow, Impact, sans-serif; font-weight: ?; } Let's say I want the font-weight to be "bold" if the user has Arial Narrow installed on their system, but "normal" if the browser has to use Impact, and maybe "bold" if the user's system has neither of those fonts. • Stream internal sound from mac to pc?

  I'm using a headphone connected to a PC, however, I also use a mac. I want to make it so that the internal sound, coming from the mac will also be heard over at the pc. So I want to convert the headphone to a somewhat central sound output where I hear both pc and mac's internal sounds. That includes error alerts, mp3s played on iTunes, etc. Is there an app that will let me do this? Just to clarify, the PC is running Windows XP.
