• Why is using an external USB drive or USB printer causing my system to hang?

  I am having some troubles using various external hard drives and my printer, all of which I connect using USB. The majority of the time, when I connect either of these devices, my system freezes up completely after about 10 minutes. They work just fine prior to that moment. I've also not noticed any problems using a USB mouse. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and have tried using a newer kernel (a 2.6.36 Maverick kernel from the kernel ppa, as opposed to the default 2.6.35 one) to no avail. I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 16 (M1647) which is a sort of newish laptop and so my guess is this is probably some kind of driver bug. Is there anyway to debug these sorts of issues? I've looked through some of my logs (/var/log/messages seemed the most useful) but haven't been able to find any kind of USB related logging nor anything interesting happening prior to the hang.

• USB Mouse/Keyboard not working

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 after booting it from a USB drive. Everything worked fine there, after booting the keyboard worked in grub but not after Ubuntu was booted. I can unplug either of them and plug them in via a PS2/USB adapter and the device will work. After switching a couple of times, I got the keyboard and mouse both working via usb but after I rebooted either stopped working. How can I fix this? The mouse is a Razer Krait and the keyboard is a Logitech ClassicKeyboard 200.

• Trying to boot from USB on Asus q200e-bhi3t45 just brings me to grub menu

  It's been a struggle every time I've tried to change my OS on this machine. I honestly don't even know how it works whenever it does. I've somehow managed to get Windows 7, Windows 8, Mint 14, Ubuntu 12.04, and 12.10 to work at random times but it's always after struggling with it and googling for random chance fixes and suddenly something clicks and it loads from usb, but 99% of the time, every time I try to boot from USB to install a distro (in this case, I'm trying to get ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso to work) my pc just comes up with a grub menu ("Minimal bash-like blahblahblah - grub ") I don't know why it works when it works. Right now I've tried everything from with/without Fast Boot in BIOS, with/without CSM, with/without secure boot, to changing BOOTx64.EFI to bootx64.efi to downloading a new bootx64.efi to copying it to every folder on the usb.... It makes no sense to me. Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't find anything

  So, school is approaching quickly, and one of the things on my supply list is a usb drive. Now I'm asking myself what filesystem to use. After some research, I found ext4 to be the most stable drive filesystem. But, I also found that Windows (The OS used by every computer in my school) can't read ext4 formatted drives without special drivers, and I'm sure the school wouldn't be too happy with me having to install the windows ext4 drivers on every computer I use with my usb. So, my question is, Should I use fat32, one of the ext filesystems (2, 3 or 4 would work) or NTFS, I have an ubuntu laptop, a Mac desktop, and of course the school computers I use are Windows, so which would be the best filesystem for my usb.

• Usb boot device totally unable to be formatted

  I'm really upset by now, I've been trying 2hours straight to format a stupid usb drive (I'm new to ubuntu and I dont know if I will last long at this rate) Basically this was the lubuntu boot usb key I tried to remove files with sudo rm I tried to format disk with disk utility I tried to format disk with gparted (with unmounting beforehand) NOTHING WORKS. I cant delete a file. I cant move a file to the usb key. I cant do anything. This is really infuriating.. I dont know what to do ? here are some gparted errors while trying to format to fat32 after unmounting error fsyncing/closing/dev/sdb: input/output error input/output error during write on /dev/sdb when I try to remove by hand, it says "read-only file"

• How to install Ubuntu using a USB stick?

  I cannot install Ubuntu 11.10 from a USB stick. It doesn't boot to Ubuntu page for installation but remains on Windows 7. I've downloaded the 11.10 version iso file and burnt it to a USB stick. After I inserted it, the USB stick is a symbol of Ubuntu installation and I clicked wubi to try to install it. But it didn't boot to Ubuntu but stayed on Win 7 after restart. It occurred error and said "windowsBackend" object has no attribut "cd_path" when I chose "Help me to boot from CD". I thought it's the problem of my computer model (acer travelmate 8481), but it can't boot on an old computer using XP as well. How can I solve this problem and install Ubuntu to replace Windows?

• USB key will only be mounted by gparted [?]

  Hi, When I insert by usb key nothing happens (i.e. the drive is not visible). I can mount the USB drive from gparted though (and then it's suddenly recognized). It's not particular to any USB key. This only happens on my laptop (on the desktop the same key will be mounted upon plugging it in without any problems). Finally, the key is formated as fat32 and dosfstools and mtools are installed (through gparted claims otherwise). what's the catch? EDIT Also, gparted offers me the option to mount the key on "/" : shouldn't that be "/media" (or has this changed ?)

• unable to boot from live USB!

  Linux noob here. I was messing around with my new dual-boot (win7 and the latest ubuntu, 12.04 I think?) Long story short, I deleted some partitions that I shouldn't have. When I boot up the machine, I get: error: no such partition. grub rescue _ I know that I could probably fix this by booting from the live USB. But I can't boot from the live USB either! On startup, I can get "boot from drive" options by pressing F12. (This is how I installed Ubuntu in the first place.) But when I select the USB drive, I get this error: error: no such device: [long string of letters and numbers]. grub rescue _ I've searched around for a fix but most threads addressing the first problem suggest booting from live drive. And I can't do that! Any help much appreciated.

  So I have a 32 bit Live USB with persistance that I use to write code, cause that's just how I roll. I can boot it onto my school computers(32 bit Win) no problem, but obviously not my Mac (2007 iMac, 64 Bit). Currently I use VMWare Fusion 6 Pro and a Plop Linux image to use the usb at home, but I can only get 900mb of ram for my VM. I was hoping to make a Live USB that can boot 32 bit and 64 bit for mac, with a shared persistance file, this way I can use my computer's full 2GB. Also, I'm not allowed edit any part of this Mac.   I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04, then using the tool Startup Disk Creator i made the live usb. I checked that it's bootable Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 62 15635593 7817766 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) Now on my lap top it boots nicely, but on two other machines that don't have any installation of ubuntu(no Grub) it doesn't boot. I changed the booting order so that USB is before HDD. So i think i did everything i know, but no luck. How can i use this USB drive on other devices that don't have any previous ubuntu installation.

  USB speeds are consistently slow in ubuntu, and have been for years. I just bought two new machines with usb 3.0, running 10.04, and yet nothing has changed, top speeds are only about 8.0 MB per second and they quickly drop to 2 or less. Its very frustrating. Are there any fixes for this at all? I find almost nothing online. The board is a gigabyte 970A-DS3 motherboard. Is there any driver I should install? I am using brand new usb sticks (kingston) and making sure to plug into the 3.0 (blue) slot.

• mplayer (mplayerhq.hu) repeats ending audio frames

  mplayer (from mplayerhq.hu) on windows repeats the last few audio frames upon exit. When the video ends, before you can see Exiting... (End of file) in the command prompt, you will hear the last 1/2 second or so of the audio track again. This behavior is the same for multiple containers/codecs/soundcards Vista or Windows 7. • Why does Ubuntu only detect one USB LAN adapters at a time?

  I try to connect real switch with my computer for an exam preparation, for this purpose I need more than one LAN cards, and there is only one built in LAN card in my computer. So, to get more LAN cards, I bought 4 USB Ethernet adapters (as I have 4 usb ports in may laptop 2 usb 2.0 ports, 2 usb 3.0 ports). When I plug these adapters in my computer Ubuntu only detects one LAN card from 2.0 usb ports, and one LAN card from 3.0 ports. And sometimes detects only one USB LAN from all the usb ports. Actually the real problem is Ubuntu shows these USB LAN adapters in the "lsusb", but does not list them in "ifconfig".   If I go to Sound Recording Devices and it says "No audio devices are installed" If I click to set up a microphone I get an error "Wizard could not launch, No audio input device found, make sure your audio hardware is working properly and check your audio configuration in the Audio Devices and Sound Themes control panel. Where can I get an audio input device? I just want something so I can actually use the microphone on my headset. This is ridiculous. I have tried to look for any file but I simply cannot find a way to add an audio input device... I really do not want to format my computer just for this problem but I am starting to feel like that is the only option I have. I have the latest chipsets

• How can I split a stereo audio track of a movie into two separate audio tracks?

  I often record TV shows with a hard disk recorder/DVD writer, burn them as VRO file and convert to MP4 with Handbrake. The shows are bilingual broadcasts with two mono audio channels instead of a stereo one: dubbed voice on the left, original voice on the right. The TV set and VLC are both perfectly capable to play only the left or the right channel, but other video players may just offer to select between different stereo audio tracks (like they are present on many DVDs). I'd like to have an easy process to create MP4 or MKV files of these shows where the two audio channels are split into two separate audio tracks. The only way that I know of is to extract the audio track (e.g. using MPEG Streamclip), split it into two tracks using an audio tool like Audacity and then merge the audio tracks back (using a DVD authoring software, don't remember all details). Clearly not a thing to repeat regularly. Preferably a solution should run on Mac OS X, but Linux or Windows solutions are very welcome, too.

  I'd like to be able to play back audio I've recorded using AVAudioRecorder @ 1.5x or 2.0x speed. I don't see anything in AVAudioPlayer that will support that. I'd appreciate some suggestions, with code if possible, on how to accomplish this with the iPhone 3.x SDK. I'm not overly concerned with lowering the pitch to compensate for increased playback speed, but being able to do so would be optimal.

• Use an audio/video file from a Linux laptop via USB to be played by Magic Sing ET-23H

  I am one of the technical directors of a regular karaoke contest event. For the karaoke contest itself, due to tight budget, we are using what one of the sponsors are providing - Magic Sing ET-23H . The video output of the Magic Sing ET-23H are broadcasted at two big screens that are being shown to the audience and event attendees. When a karaoke contestant provides his / her karaoke video, the video itself is in a readable USB flashdrive and is attached to the USB input of Magic Sing ET-23H. What really bugs me is that the interface of Magic Sing ET-23H are also being broadcasted at the big screen video feeds. The interface of choosing the video file is being seen in the Magic Sing ET-23H - also to the big video screens that are seen by the audience and event goers. I will post in the comments ( if my less than 10 reputation would allow me) the picture of Magic Sing ET-23KH USB input of the device. I always bring my laptop, Acer AS5742-7653, during the regular karaoke event. I'm using my laptop also for tallying of scores from the judges, and also playing audio files from contestants that did not provide a karaoke video. I personally am using different Linux distros, but I next to all the time use my Ubuntu Studio 12.04.3 64bit partition during the regular karaoke contest event. My question is this: Is there a way I can share a temporary video/audio file directly from the laptop I'm using, going to the Magic Sing ET-23H that can broadcast both the video/audio file? Just like how in Window's Avisynth AVS files, or VirtualDub's temporary avi file, or like using ffplay (of ffmpeg), etc. I have researched somewhat the matter and found links in SuperUser.com. Though I can only provide the links at the comments section of this post if my reputation of less than 10 would allow me. I have a hunch it is possible, but I have not fully understood the device being used at the event, Magic Sing ET-23H, if there are other ways for it to broadcast video and audio files besides its USB input. Any help to my current predicament is highly appreciated. Thank you. • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

• USB ports causing Wireless and Mobile Phone tethering drop out

  I have a problem with my USB ports and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. I'm hoping that I can get some idea as to how to troubleshoot my problem. Problem description: I recently bought a USB Wireless Adapter in order to connect my Desktop PC to the WLAN. The dongle keeps dropping off connection regularly on average once a minute. And the connection is slow. What I've tried: I installed a network scanner to determine signal strength. The PC/adapter combo is getting about 70% signal strength. I have a laptop that has an internal Wireless adapter. I moved the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 90%. I installed the USB adapter on the laptop. I placed the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 80%. And there is no drop out issue. I've isolated the problem to be on the PC. I used internet tethering on my mobile phone in order to test the USB ports. I get the same problem, themobile phone keeps dropping in and out. I plugged the adapter and phone on all USB ports, and it is still dropping out on all ports. I've isolated the problem to be the Motherboard, USB hub. I updated the BIOS, and USB driver. Still dropping out. I noticed that when I used the mobile phone tethering method, the phone (iphone 5) is guarenteed to drop out and does not appear to charge if I jiggle the the 8-pin connector on the base of the phone. If I push the pin tightly on the phone, the phone starts charging, as soon as I let go, it stops and drops out from the PC. This is strange because this doesn't happen when it is plugged to the powerboard. Which means that the 8 pin connector is fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. I assume that it is to do with the USB ports not supplying enough power which in turn causes the devices to intermittently drop out. The reason I say this is because the USB cable works fine when plugged into a powerboard with enough power supplied to the phone. Only when it is plugged into the USB port on the PC, does it drop out. My motherboard is Asus P8z68-v le. My Wireless adapter is the D-link DWA131. I can't seem to find any settings in the BIOS to increase the south bridge voltage so as to supply more power to the USB ports. Although this problem only occurs when I'm trying to hook up to a device supplying internet connection. My USB HDD, Flash drives, and Mouse and Key are working fine! Any suggestions please?
