• Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

  I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

• use i3 tiling window manager in RHEL 5

  For some time I have been using the i3 tiling window manager in Ubuntu. However at my new company we use RHEL5. I would dearly love to port over all my configs but Im having some trouble... An initial (naive) approach seems that a simple yum install i3 yields no results for i3. I then used some additional rpm repos by following instructions to add the EPEL RPM Repositories but it seems i3 is only bundled for RHEL = 6. Damn. I'm fairly sure that this must be possible but I'm pretty new to the Redhat scene and am not sure how to approach this problem. Any pointers would be gratefully received!

• MacRuby + Interface Builder: How to display, then close, then display a window again

  I'm a complete n00b with MacRuby and Cocoa, though I've got more than a year of Ruby experience, so keep that in mind when answering - I need lots of details and explanation. :) I've set up a simple project that has 2 windows in it, both of which are built with Interface Builder. The first window is a simple list of accounts using a table view. It has a "+" button below the table. When I click the + button, I want to show an "Add New Account" window. I also have an AccountsController < NSWindowController and a AddNewAccountController class, set up as the delegates for these windows, with the appropriate button click methods wired up, and outlets to reference the needed windows. When I click the "+" button in the Accounts window, I have this code fire: @add_account.center @add_account.display @add_account.makeKeyAndOrderFront(nil) @add_account.orderFrontRegardless this works great the first time I click the + button. Everything shows up, I'm able to enter my data and have it bind to my model. however, when I close the add new account form, things start going bad. if I set the add new account window to release on close, then the second time I click the + button, the window will still pop up but it's frozen. i can't click any buttons, enter any data, or even close the form. i assume this is because the form's code has been released, so there is no message loop processing the form... but i'm not entirely sure about this. if i set the add new account window to not release on close, then the second time i click the + button, the window shows up fine and it is usable - but it still has all the data that i had previously entered... it's still bound to my previous Account class instance. what am I doing wrong? what's the correct way to create a new instance of the Add New Account form, create a new Account model, bind that model to the form and show the form, when I click the + button on the Accounts form? ... this is all being done on OSX 10.6.6, 64bit, with XCode 3.2.4

• How do you open a second WPF window without creating a new one.

  In the program I am trying to build, I have a menu button that opens a second window. The user puts information into the second window, presses the "Done" button, and the information is transfered into the main window. The problem I am having is opening the second window. I have both windows build in xaml files in Visual Studio but I can't find a way to show the second window. Using "Window window = new Window" does not fit my needs because 1) I already have the second window built and 2) I have tried this and I cannot figure out how to add children to the window; there is no window.children nor any grid to put the children into. • IIS, Web services, Time out error

  Hello, We’ve got problem with ASP.NET web application that uses web services of other system. I’ll describe our system architecture: we have web application and Windows services that uses the same web services. - Windows service works all the time and sends information to these web services once an hour. - Web application is designed for users to send the same information in manual behavior. The problem is when user sometimes tries to send information in manual behavior in the web application, .NET throws exception „The operation has timed out” (web?). At that time Windows service successfully sends all necessary information to these web services. IT stuff that supports these web services asserts that there was no any request from our web application at that time. Then we have restarted IIS (iisreset) and everything has started to work fine. This situation repeats all the time. There is no anti-virus or firewall on the server. My suggestion is that there is something wrong with IIS, patches, configuration or whatever? The only specific thing is that there are requests that can least 2 minutes (web service response wait time). We tried to reproduce this situation on our local test servers, but everything works fine. OS: Windows Server 2003 R2 .NET: 3.5

• Shrinking TCP Window Size to 0 on Cisco ASA

  Having an issue with any large file transfer that crosses our Cisco ASA unit come to an eventual pause. Setup Test1: Server A, FileZilla Client <- 1GBPS - Cisco ASA <- 1 GBPS - Server B, FileZilla Server TCP Window size on large transfers will drop to 0 after around 30 seconds of a large file transfer. RDP session then becomes unresponsive for a minute or two and then is sporadic. After a minute or two, the FTP transfer resumes, but at 1-2 MB/s. When the FTP transfer is over, the responsiveness of the RDP session returns to normal. Test2: Server C in same network as Server B, FileZilla Client <- local network - Server B, FileZilla Server File will transfer at 30+ MB/s. Details ASA: 5520 running 8.3(1) with ASDM 6.3(1) Windows: Server 2003 R2 SP2 with latest patches Server: VMs running on HP C3000 blade chasis FileZilla: 3.3.5.1, latest stable build Transfer: 20 GB SQL .BAK file Protocol: Active FTP over tcp/20, tcp/21 Switches: Cisco Small Business 2048 Gigabit running latest 2.0.0.8 VMware: 4.1 HP: Flex-10 3.15, latest version Notes All servers are VMs. Thoughts Pretty sure the ASA is at fault since a transfer between VMs on the same network will not show a shrinking Window size. • Need an expert advice on *X display manager, window manager and composit manager combination

  Hello! I have fought with myself whether or not i should ask this question but I find myself stuck and I need another expert opinion. I can't seem find the right combination of display and window manager (and composit manager). I have tried so many different combinations but most of them don't work for me. I have been working with Linux for a few years now and currently I'm running Gentoo with GDM, Openbox(stand alone, Gnome aware) and xcompmgr. But I have tried Metacity, Awesome and Fluxbox with and without Compiz, but always with GDM. What I want: A lightweight, HIGHLY configurable environment that doesn't rely on mouse-input too much (except for web browsing and image processing). At 95% I work with multiple consoles and desktops on multiple screens. What makes me ask is that most lightweight environments seem somewhat "unfinished" and show unexpected behavior quite often. And of course I want an environment that's not TOO ugly to look at as I use it at an average of 10 hours a day. :) Any thoughts? What do you use in a similar situation? Thanks for any advice! • Window Management for Mac OS X

  Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

• Keyboard shortcut for moving a window to another screen

  When working with two (or more screens), a common problem is that launched applications appear on the "wrong" screen. I especially find this annoying when launching a text editor from the command line, because I have to leave the home row with my right hand in order to drag the window to the "right" screen before I can continue typing. Is it possible to define a keyboard shortcut which moves the current application to the other/next screen? Edit: I'm using Windows XP, but it's good to know that the feature already exists in Windows 7. Edit2: I went for the autohotkey script. This adaptation works for me: #q:: WinGetPos, winx, winy,,, A WinGet, mm, MinMax, A WinRestore, A If (winx > 1270) { newx := winx-1270 OutputDebug, Moving left from %winx% to %newx% } else { newx := winx+1270 OutputDebug, Moving right from %winx% to %newx% } WinMove, A,, newx, winy if mm=1 WinMaximize, A Return I did have to make use of the OutputDebug statements and dbgview to discover the proper threshold value 1270 for moving left or right. The exact threshold is especially important when moving maximized windows to the left.

  Its been a long time since I blogged.  Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels.  However, here is a quick post with a few updates.  Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed.  We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010.   With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and the corresponding Silverlight, WCF RIA bits etc., and getting them all to work together.  Now that, both VS 2010 and Silverlight have RTMed, I wanted to post a quick update on the necessary downloads. Visual Studio 2010 RTM can be downloaded from MSDN Visual Studio site  If you are doing Silverlight 4 development with Visual studio, then you can download the Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio  Then, if you are developing with WCF RIA Services, you can download the WCF RIA Services RC 2 for SL4 and VS 2010 And finally, if you want to use WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET you would require the Domain DataSource control.  Also, to use some of the additional Service Utility tools, you would require the WCF RIA Services Toolkit.  You can download the same from WCF RIA Services Toolkit April 2010 Once you have installed all the above, you should be able to see the following in your add-remove programs WCF RIA Services v1.0 for Visual Studio 2010 (Version 4.0.50401.0) WCF RIA Services Toolkit (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight 4 SDK (Version 4.0.50401.0) Also, you would need the Expression Blend 4 for designing the apps for Silverlight 4.  You can download the release candidate from here Thats it.  You are all set for development with Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services. • Cannot Change "Log on through Terminal Services" in Local Security Policy XP from Server 2008 GP

  This is a mixed AD environment, Server 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 I have a 2003 AD R2 and a 2008 R2 AD. GPO is usually managed from the 2008 R2 machine. I have a RD Gateway on another server as well. I setup the CAP and RAP to allow a normal user to log on to the departments workstation. I also adjusted the GPO for that OU to allow Log on trhough Remote Desktop Gateway for the user group. This worked on my windows 7 workstation. But unfortunately the policy is a different name in XP "allow log on through Terminal Services" I can get through right into the machine but when the log on actually happens to the local machine i get the "Cannot log on interactively" error. This is set in (for the local machine) Secpol.msc Local Security Policy "user rights assignment" but is controlled by the GPO in Computer Configuration Policies Security Settings Local Policies "User Rights Assignment" Do I simply need to adjust the same setting on the same GPO but with a server 2003 GP editor? Feel like that could cause issues... Looking for some direction. Or if anyone has run into this issue yet. UPDATE Should this work? support.microsoft.com/kb/186529 Still seems like I will have the issue as the actual GP settings for Log on through Terminal Services is still different between Server 2008 R2 and 2003 R2.... Another Thought: Should I delete the GPO made for the department and remake it with the 2003 R2 server? I have no 2008 specific settings as the whole department runs XP other than myself. If that's a solution I will move my computer out of the department as a solution... Thoughts?

• HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z Not Showing up in Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

  I installed this printer on a windows XP machine. First using the wireless option, and later using USB. In both cases when I connect to my other computer (also Windows XP) via terminal services and check printers in the local resources tab it does not show up on the remote session. I used to have a Samsung connected to my local computer over USB and and that worked fine over terminal services. Things I tried so far: I did read this page and installed the software fix on both computers: (Printers that use ports that do not begin with...) I installed the minimum HP software install on the remote computer and that didn't help either. I also tried running the add new printer wizard on the remote computer: I selected "local printer attached to this computer" and did not check the "automatically.." option. On the next page of the wizard I can select an option for "use the following port". I see options for TS001 through TS009 there. I'm assuming those are coming from the local machine. I tried clicking each one and then checking "have disk" and pointing it to C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67\i386\msxpsdrv.inf 1 but for every single TS00.. port it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty stuck at this point. 1 C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67 is the folder I extracted the HP driver software to after I downloaded it.

• Explorer.exe not starting after login on Windows Server 2003 (Terminal Services and console)

  When users login to a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Terminal Services they have a blank desktop. Upon inspection, explorer.exe is not running. When I login as administrator, using either RDP or to the console, I am having the same issue. I can pull up the taskman and start explorer.exe manually. I have another Terminal Server setup exactly the same way (same apps, settings, GPO, etc . . .) the only difference is we deployed Symantec Endpoint Client 11.0.5 on Friday. For some reason the working Terminal Server is still on 11.0.4, but the suspect server received the 11.0.5 client upgrade. I checked the eventviewer for any relevant explorer.exe entries to no avail. It seems that if SEP is preventing explorer.exe from starting at login it would do the same for the domain admin starting explorer.exe from the taskman. I disabled the SEP client and services on the server and issued smc -stop and tried logging in again. Still no explorer.exe. So I'm not sure if the client upgrade is relevant but it is worth mentioning since that was the last system change. The 2 servers are members of a NLB group. I took the bad terminal server out of the group until the issue is resolved. Actually stopped the host using NLB manager Any help is appreciated.

  I am running SharePoint 2010 with SQL 2012, I am trying to get Business Connectivity Services (BCS) running but I am facing a double-hope authentication issue. Everytime I try to connect to the external BCS list created in SharePoint designer, I get the error Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. In the event viewer on the SQL server I see a login failure for an anonymous user from the SP server IP address. Background information below: I have enabled Kerberos under SharePoint Central admin. I have the following AD domain accounts: SP_Farm - main website pool SP_Services - for SharePoint services (including BCS) SQL_Engine - SQL database engine I then created the following with SetSPN: SetSPN -S http/intranet mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S http/intranet.mydomain.local mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S SPSvc/SPS mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine I then delegated the AD accounts for any authentication protocol to the following: SP_Farm - SP_Farm (http service type, intranet) SP_Farm - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) SP_Service - SP_Service (SPSvc) SP_Service - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) I have also checked the WFE is being logged on to with Kerberos, with the WFE server event log showing event ID 4624 with Kerberos authentication, this is OK. The SQL is also showing connections authenticated as Kerberos from the WFE with the following query: Select s.session_id, s.login_name, s.host_name, c.auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections c inner join sys.dm_exec_sessions s on c.session_id = s.session_id Despite the above, credentials are not passed from the client through the SharePoint server to the SQL server, only the anonymous account is used. I get the following error in the WFE server for 'BusinessData' ID 8080: Could not open connection using 'data source=sql1.mydomain.local;initial catalog=MSCRM;integrated security=SSPI;pooling=true;persist security info=false' in App Domain '/LM/W3SVC/1848937658/ROOT-1-129922939694071446'. The full exception text is: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. If I set a username and password with the Secure Store Service and set the external list to use the impersonated credentials, the list works. Any ideas what I have missed and what can be tried next?

  What I am trying to do is quite complex, so I figured I'd throw it out to a wider audience to see if anyone can find a flaw. What I am trying to do (as an MSP/VAR) is design a solution that will give multiple companies a session based remote desktop (companies that need to be kept completely seperate), using only a handful of servers. This is how I imagine it at the moment: CORE SERVER - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC01 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-EX01 (Exchange Server 2010 running multi tenant mode) Server3: Cloud-SG01 (Remote Desktop Gateway) CORE SERVER 2 - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC02 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-TS01 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company A) Server3: Cloud-TS02 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company B) Server4: Cloud-TS03 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company C) What I thought about doing was setting up each Organisation in their own OU (perhaps creating their OU structure based on the Excahnge 2010 tenant OU structure so the accounts are linked). Each company would get a Remote Desktop Session Host server that would also serve as a file server. This server would be seperated from the rest on its own range. The server Cloud-SG01 would have access to all these networks and route the traffic to the appropriate network when a client connects and authenticated so they are pushed onto the correct server (Based on session collections in 2012). I won't lie this is something I have come up with quite quickly so there may well be something gapingly obvious that I am missing. Any feedback would be appreciated.

• 100% CPU use when new usb device plugged in - services.exe / Windows Server 2003

  On my server I am trying to install a new usb drive but all that happens is that the system starts using huge amounts of processor cycles with services.exe. On closer inspection with process explorer there is a thread called umpnpmgr.dll using most of the services.exe processor time. I left it for a half hour and still nothing happened. Rebooted and tried again, same result. Tried a different usb drive, then a flash drive but still same issue. Tried updating driver but it said the update function was already in action. I have used process explorer to kill the thread now so the server can still perform its intended functions. Any device that was previously installed before this began happening will still work but any device new to the system will not. My question(s) is/are: Is there a way to manually install the device into the registry so Windows thinks it is a previously installed device? Or can this problem be repaired through anything other than a reinstall? To do a reinstall would mean backing up large amounts of data which is hard with a usb drive and insufficient space on all other network machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William

• Clip a wpf Popup at bounds of a main window

  From what I understand, the popup exists within it's own visual tree. However, I've noticed a few properties, Clip and ClipToBounds. What I am wanting to do is Visually clip a popup at the right and bottom edges of a window regardless of the fact that the popup is independent of the bounds of the window. I'm not using XAML, but if somebody knows how to do it in XAML, then that's fine. I can get to the main window using System.Windows.Application.Current.MainWindow. Is it possible from this to get a value that I can use to clip the popup? I'm assuming that if there is a value that I can use, then I would be able to bind the clipping of the popup to that value. This is really not necessary since after the popup initially opens, if the window gets moved or resized, the popup closes. So I would really only need to clip the popup when it opens. The reason I would like to do this is because although I am using a popup, I don't want it to appear as a popup that exists outside of the window. FYI this is for a popup calendar for a custom datebox. Any ideas, as well as clarification of misconceptions that I may have, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brandon

  I have a 16x16 .png file which I have loaded as an ImageSource (BitmapSource) and it is working fine when I use it on an Image in a tabcontrol header. I now want to use that same image in a floating window (inherited from the WPF Window class) when the user drags the document tab. (This is AvalonDock which I have tweaked to allow images in the tab header) After many searches on the web, I understand that Window.Icon requires a BitmapFrame but all the sample code seems to assume that a .ico file is available which it isn't in my case. I have tried the following code (plus variants including cloning, freezing etc): var image = (Image) content.Icon; var bitmapSource = (BitmapSource) image.Source; Icon = BitmapFrame.Create(bitmapSource); but when the Show() method is called, an exception is thrown: "Exception of type 'System.ExecutionEngineException' was thrown." How can a I create a compatible bitmap on the fly to allow the Window to display the icon?

There are many combination to display this data by customer id, customer id and itemnumber, customer id, itemnumber, work and history condition. And from date and To date condition. It should display in scroll only these values none other it the same way history condition should work. Work and History are in check box.   I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. • Capture window close event

  I want to capture events that close editor window (tab) in Visual Studio 2008 IDE. When I use dte2.Application.Events.get_CommandEvents(null, 0).BeforeExecute I successfully captured such events: File.Close File.CloseAllButThis File.Exit Window.CloseDocumentWindow and others. If code in window is not acceptable, I stop the event (CancelDefault = true). But if I click "X" button on the right hand side, "Save Changes"; dialog appears, tab with editor window close and I have no any captured events. In this case I can capture WindowClosing event, but can not cancel the event. Is it poosible to handle "x" button click and stop event?

I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone.
