• Keep Xubuntu Network Manager from overwriting resolv.conf

  How do I keep Xubuntu 11.10 from overwriting resolv.conf everytime I reboot my machine? Everytime I reboot, I get an overwritten resolv.conf that has the words # Generated by Network Manager and no nameservers specified. I ran the following to get rid of Network Manager, but it's still replacing my resolv.conf when I restart the machine. sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager-gnome sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager-pptp sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager-pptp-gnome

• xubuntu 13.10: automount usb sticks

  I have a freshly installed Xubuntu 13.10 on the Lenovo T520 laptop. In the Settings Manager — Removable Drives and Media I have the Mount removable drives when hot-plugged and Mount removable media when inserted checked. But when I insert an usb-stick (VFAT) it doesn't get auto-mounted. So I can't access it from terminal. It gets mounted only when I click on the drive icon on the desktop or in Thunar. Can I fix it somehow?

• xubuntu 12.04 can't change desktop background/wallpaper permanently

  If I change the desktop background (wallpaper) via right-click on desktop = desktop settings = single image, and select another background image from the list, or add a photo of my own (via the "+" symbol), I can actually change the background image, but after logging out or restarting, the wallpaper is always reset to the original xubuntu 12.04 background. So, basically, I can't find a way to permanently change the desktop background. Any ideas?

• Did C++11 address concerns passing std lib objects between dynamic/shared library boundaries? (ie dlls and so)?

  One of my major complaints about C++ is how hard in practice it is to pass std library objects outside of dynamic library (ie dll/so) boundaries. The std library is often header-only. Which is great for doing some awesome optimizations. However, for dll's, they are often built with different compiler settings that may impact the internal structure/code of a std library containers. For example, in MSVC one dll may build with iterator debugging on while another builds with it off. These two dlls may run into issues passing std containers around. If I expose std::string in my interface, I can't guarantee the code the client is using for std::string is an exact match of my library's std::string. This leads to hard to debug problems, headaches, etc. You either rigidly control the compiler settings in your organization to prevent these issues or you use a simpler C interface that won't have these problems. Or specify to your clients the expected compiler settings they should use (which sucks if another library specifies other compiler settings). My question is whether or not C++11 tried to do anything to solve these issues?

I found a small editor but it does not allow new entries and alacarte tries to install whole Gnome... So I'm looking for a menu editor that will allow me to: Add new launchers, Edit existing ones Move existing ones to different categories Create new categories Won't install bazillion dependencies :)

• xubuntu app menu on wrong side of screen

  I am using Xubuntu 12.04, with a dual monitor setup (with the nvidia driver xinerama enabled). The top panel is spanned acros the two monitors. This works quite fine, except for one thing. When I click the little Application Menu button on my left screen, the application menu opens on the top right corner of the left screen. This is quite annoying, I fiddled in the panel prefs but could not fix this. Any thoughts?

• Visual Studio &amp; TFS 11 &ndash; List of extensions and upgrades

  This post is a list of the extensions I recommend for use with Visual Studio 11. It’s coming up all the time – what to install, where are the download sites, last version, etc etc, and thus I thought it better to post it here and keep it updated. The basics are Visual Studio 11 connected to a Team Foundation Server 11. Note that we now are at Beta time, and that also many live in a side-by-side environment with Visual Studio 2010.  The side-by-side is supported by VS 11. However, if you installed a component supporting VS11 before you installed VS11, then you need to reinstall it.  The VSIX installer will understand that it is to apply those only for VS11, and will not touch – nor remove – the same for VS2010. A good example here is the Power Commands. The list is more or less in priority order. The focus is to get a setup which can be used for a complete coding experience for the whole ALM process. The list of course reflects what I use for my work , so it is by no means complete, and for some of the tools there are equally useful alternatives. Many components have not yet arrived with VS11 support.  I will add them as they arrive.  The components directly associated with Visual Studio from Microsoft should be common, see the Microsoft column. • Ubuntu 14.04:LTS , HPLIP loses USB connection to HP laserjet

  This is my first post, so please let me know if i have inadvertanly broken any rules. Problem There seems to be a problem with HPLIP and USB connections in ubuntu 14.04LTS. After upgrading i managed to get the printing to work but today it has broken. Initial Issue (Solved) After upgrading to unbutntu 14.04 LTS my printer lHP LaserJet 1018 stopped printing (code=12) Looking through the Forumsthere are several issues with printitng and HPLIP so I was able to troubleshoot this. The steps I took were : Reran HPdoctor Ran hp-check Un-installed and installed the latest version of HPLIP (3.14.4) Checked the USB connections lsusb and lsusb-v Re-ran hpcheck Removed the printer from HPLIP Re-ran hpcheck Manually configued HPLIP to the printer hp-setup-g <xxx:yyy> And this worked HPLIP was able to see the printer in the USB , test page printed and was happily working for a few weeks. Current Issue Printer Not working However today my wife complains the printer is not working and checking see that although HPLIP has the same error code and did not seem to be able to see the printer although running lsusb could see the printer. Initially thought this may be due to usb given a new bus/device after being turned on and off and went to repeat the steps above at the moment still seeing an error in that the HPLIP is complaining that it cannot see the device **error: Device not found. • Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

• No sound output from headphone jack Ubuntu12.04

  I have just bought a new ASUS u47vc computer. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on it alongside windows 7 with no problems what so ever. Howevr, there is one issue that must be resolved. I can not get sound to come from the audio jack. The laptop's speakers work fine. It plays music and sound files fine with the internal speaks. However, when I plug in my headphones (or external speakers) the internal speakers mute (as they should) and nothing comes out of the headphones. • dual-boot (win-xp/ubu12.04) graphics card for ubu-desktop/win-xp-games

  for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there). From other questions here and some webstigation I think I'd like to go for a Nvidia card, I've been trying to figure out what models fit the system req's but it seems they use different kind of model numbers so I don't get any wiser. tl;dr: will http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-620-oem/specifications run Guild Wars 2 http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=938 Or what is the worst card from nVidia that will run GW2 smoothly and work well in Ubuntu 12.04 Thanks!

  I try to boot Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit on my Compaq CQ58 laptop from a USB but it is not working. I've correctly installed the Ubuntu on my pen drive following the instructions on Ubuntu website. (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows) These are my BIOS settings: Post Hotkey Delay (sec) <0 CD-ROM Boot Internal Network Adapter Boot Network Boot Protocol Legacy Support Secure Boot Platform Key Enrolled Pending Action None Clear All Secure Boot UEFI Boot Order: USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk OS Boot Manager Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive ! Network Adapter With these settings when i restart my computer what shows up is: Boot Device Not Found. This is what I get on the Boot Manager: Boot Option Menu OS boot Manager Boot From EFI File (Arrow Up) and (Arrow Down) to change option, ENTER to select an option. Press F10 to BIOS Setup Options, ESC to exit. PLEASE HELP... P.S. My laptop has windows 8

• Ubuntu 11.04:Add right click menu as "Compress as ZIP"

  Step 1: I wanted to Add a menu as "Compress as ZIP" on right click. I know i can use change default compress format as "ZIP" using gconf-editor. But I wanted to add a new Menu Item for Compressing as ZIP without opening any other option dialog. Step 2: I wanted to Compress a file as ZIP and Rename it as a "epub". Please let me know is it possible to zip&rename by adding single menu Item? Im using Ubuntu 11.04 and Installed "Nautilus-Action-Configurations", but unsuccessful. N.B. I have read this Ask Ubuntu Q&A; I dont want to open a new window to choose me the format. It should be straight away saved as ZIP.

• Mount external hdd in fluxbox ubuntu -12.04 commandline install

  I did the following: Install command line interface with ubuntu alternate install 12.04 in vmwareplayer5(9.2.2) After the base system was installed: sudo apt-get update, upgrade and dist-upgrade, sudo apt-get install xinit xorg fluxbox build-essential lxterminal gksu leafpad pcmanfm mc chromium-browser, this works. I also installed vmwaretools. My problem is being unable to mount any usb hdd or thumb drives. I'm new at building fluxbox so any help would be much appreciated!

I am now trying to do it the right way and upload to a PPA.
