  • How do you pass variables to class_eval in ruby?

    - by klochner
I'm working on a metaprogramming task, where I'm trying to use a single method to define a polymorphic association in the calling class, while also defining the association in the target class. I need to pass in the name of the calling class to get the association right. Here's a snippet that should get the idea across: class SomeClass < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :join_models, :dependent=:destroy end class JoinModel < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :some_class belongs_to :entity, :polymorphic=true end module Foo module ClassMethods def acts_as_entity has_many :join_models, :as=:entity, :dependent=:destroy has_many :some_classes, :through=:join_models klass = self.name.tableize SomeClass.class_eval "has_many :#{klass}, :through=:join_models" end end end I'd like to eliminate the klass= line, but don't know how else to pass a reference to self from the calling class into class_eval. any suggestions?

  • How to Unload a popped view controller?

    - by RexOnRoids
Using a navigation based view hierarchy. I have a root view controller, and multiple view controllers that branch out from the same when a button is pressed. When a user presses the back button on the UINavigationBar, the current viewcontroller is popped and the display animates back to the rootviewcontroller. The problem is, I want the viewcontrollers to UNLOAD whenever they are popped. Seems like they are not unloading because when I go back to them they are still in the state they were when they were popped. How do I unload the viewcontrollers after navigating back to the rootviewcontroller?

  • Getting HTTP 406 when trying to test facebooker application with cucumber

    - by Waseem
I am trying to test facebook api calls with cucumber. Here is the code. # app/controller/facebook_users_controller.rb class FacebookUsersController < ApplicationController def create fb_user = facebook_session.user user = User.new(:facebook_uid => fb_user.uid, :facebook_session_key => facebook_session.session_key respond_to do |format| if user.save format.json { render :json => { :status => 'ok' }.to_json } end end end end # features/steps/facebook_connect_step.rb Given /^I am a facebook connected user$/ do mock_session = Facebooker::MockSession.create post('/facebook_user.json') puts response.code end When I run the cucumber step for above step definition, I get a response code of 406 instead of 200. This happens in the cucumber test environment only and not in the browser(development/production).

  • [VBA] Create a recurrent event in Outlook

    - by CFP
Hello everyone! I'm trying to create annual, all-day events with VBA in outlook 2007. I use the following code, but no matter which conbination of Start, StartDate, End, etc I use, it won't create a whole-day event. Either it gives it default start/end times, or it remove the all-day attribute... Dim Birthday As Date 'Get the birthday '... Dim BDay As AppointmentItem Dim Pattern As Outlook.RecurrencePattern Set BDay = Application.CreateItem(olAppointmentItem) Set Pattern = BDay.GetRecurrencePattern Pattern.RecurrenceType = olRecursYearly Pattern.DayOfMonth = Day(Birthday) Pattern.MonthOfYear = Month(Birthday) Pattern.PatternStartDate = Birthday Pattern.NoEndDate = True BDay.AllDayEvent = True BDay.Subject = Contact.FullName BDay.Save When created directly in outlook, entries start on the birth day and end 24 hours later. Yet trying to set Start and End this way results in errors. Plus, entries created outlook have no start/end time in the recurrence pattern (well, they are all-day entries...) Ideas, anybody? Thanks!

  • Achieve Rails-style migrations in MS Access VBA application

    - by avguchenko
This is a simple way to do Rails-style migrations in a VBA application. Just add additional migrations like migration(name, sql_string, database) to run_migratons and call run_migrations somewhere in the beginning of your execution. Function migrate(signature As String, sql As String, dbs As DAO.database) Dim rs As DAO.Recordset Set rs = dbs.OpenRecordset("select * from versions where migration = '" & signature & "'") If rs.EOF Then dbs.Execute (sql) rs.AddNew rs("migration") = signature rs.Update End If End Function Function setup_versions(dbs As DAO.database) Dim t As DAO.TableDef On Error Resume Next Set t = dbs.TableDefs("versions") If Err.Number <> 0 Then dbs.Execute ("CREATE TABLE versions (migration text)") End If Err.Clear End Function Function run_migrations(dbs As DAO.database) setup_versions(dbs) migrate("20100315142400_create_table", "CREATE TABLE table_name (field1 type, field 2 type)", dbs) 'add migrations here' End Function

  • Assistance using respond_to to find the right actions to render PDF in ruby on rails

    - by Angela
Hi, I am trying out Prince with the Princely plugin, which is supposed to format templates that have the .pdf into a PDF generator. Here is my controller: class TodoController < ApplicationController def show_date @date = Date.today @campaigns = Campaign.all @contacts = Contact.all @contacts.each do |contact| end respond_to do |format| format.html format.pdf do render :pdf => "filename", :stylesheets => ["application", "prince"], :layout => "pdf" end end end end I changed the routes.db to include the following: map.connect ':controller/:action.:format' map.todo "todo/today", :controller => "todo", :action => "show_date" My expected behavior is when I enter todo/today.pdf, it tries to execute show_date, but renders according to the princely plugin. Right now, it says cannot find action. What do I need to do to fix this?

  • I have a having a a matrix index bounds in matlab

    - by Ben Fossen
    I keep getting the error( this is in Matlab) Attempted to access r(0,0); index must be a positive integer or logical. Error in == Romberg at 15 I ran it with Romberg(1.3, 2.19,8) I think the problem is the statment is not logical because I made it positive and still got the same error. anyone got some ideas of what i could do? function Romberg(a, b, n) h = b - a; r = zeros(n,n); for i = 1:n h = h/2; sum1 = 0; for k = 1:2:2^(i) sum1 = sum1 + f(a + k*h); end r(i,0) = (1/2)*r(i-1,0) + (sum1)*h; for j = 1:i r(i,j) = r(i,j-1) + (r(i,j-1) - r(i-1,j-1))/((4^j) - 1); end end disp(r); end function f_of_x = f(x) f_of_x = sin(x)/x; end

  • Why ruby object has two to_s and inspect methods that do the same thing? Or, so it seems.

    - by prosseek
The p calls inspect, and puts/print calls to_s for representing its object. If I run class Graph def initialize @nodeArray = Array.new @wireArray = Array.new end def to_s # called with print / puts "Graph : #{@nodeArray.size}" end def inspect # called with p "G" end end if __FILE__ == $0 gr = Graph.new p gr print gr puts gr end I get G Graph : 0Graph : 0 Then, why does ruby has two functions do the same thing? What makes the difference between to_s and inspect? And what's the difference between puts/print/p? If I comment out the to_s or inspect function, I get as follows. #<Graph:0x100124b88>#<Graph:0x100124b88>

  • Does it take time to deallocate memory?

    - by jm1234567890
I have a C++ program which, during execution, will allocate about 3-8Gb of memory to store a hash table (I use tr1/unordered_map) and various other data structures. However, at the end of execution, there will be a long pause before returning to shell. For example, at the very end of my main function I have std::cout << "End of execution" << endl; But the execution of my program will go something like $ ./program do stuff... End of execution [long pause of maybe 2 min] $ -- returns to shell Is this expected behavior or am I doing something wrong? I'm guessing that the program is deallocating the memory at the end. But, commercial applications which use large amounts of memory (such as photoshop) do not exhibit this pause when you close the application. Please advise :)

  • How do I handle a missing mandatory argument in Ruby OptionParser?

    - by Rob Jones
In OptionParser I can make an option mandatory, but if I leave out that value it will take the name of any following option as the value, screwing up the rest of the command line parsing. Here is a test case that echoes the values of the options: $ ./test_case.rb --input foo --output bar output bar input foo Now leave out the value for the first option: $ ./test_case.rb --input --output bar input --output Is there some way to prevent it taking another option name as a value? Thanks! Here is the test case code: #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'optparse' files = Hash.new option_parser = OptionParser.new do |opts| opts.on('-i', '--input FILENAME', 'Input filename - required') do |filename| files[:input] = filename end opts.on('-o', '--output FILENAME', 'Output filename - required') do |filename| files[:output] = filename end end begin option_parser.parse!(ARGV) rescue OptionParser::ParseError $stderr.print "Error: " + $! + "\n" exit end files.keys.each do |key| print "#{key} #{files[key]}\n" end

  • How does this ruby custom accessor work

    - by ennuikiller
So the method below in class_eval dynamically creates accessors for attributes defined at runtime. It can be used, for example, to create configuration objects with attributes read from a config file (and unknown until runtime). I understanding all of it except for the else branch. If I am correct the else branch returns the attribute value (val[0]) if there is one value passed in *val. However the way its written I would expect it to return an array (val) if there is more then one value passed in *var. In particular, if I have something like the following: value = 5 then from reading the code I would expect "#{@value}" to be [=,5]. However "#{@value}" returns 5 and not the array [=,5]. How is this possible? class Module def dsl_accessor(*symbols) symbols.each do |sym| class_eval %{ def #{sym}(*val) if val.empty? @#{sym} else @#{sym} = val.size == 1 ? val[0] : val end end } end end end

  • Ruby: Is there a better way to iterate over multiple (big) files?

    - by zxcvbnm
Here's what I'm doing (sorry for the variable names, I'm not using those in my code): File.open("out_file_1.txt", "w") do |out_1| File.open("out_file_2.txt", "w") do |out_2| File.open_and_process("in_file_1.txt", "r") do |in_1| File.open_and_process("in_file_2.txt", "r") do |in_2| while line_1 = in_1.gets do line_2 = in_2.gets #input files have the same number of lines #process data and output to files end end end end end The open_and_process method is just to open the file and close it once it's done. It's taken from the pickaxe book. Anyway, the main problem is that the code is nested too deeply. I can't load all the files' contents into memory, so I have to iterate line by line. Is there a better way to do this? Or at least prettify it?

  • Thou shalt not put code on a piedestal - Code is a tool, no more, no less

    - by Ralf Westphal
“Write great code and everything else becomes easier” is what Paul Pagel believes in. That´s his version of an adage by Brian Marick he cites: “treat code as an end, not just a means.” And he concludes: “My post-Agile world is software craftsmanship.” I wonder, if that´s really the way to go. Will “simply” writing great code lead the software industry into the light? He´s alluding to the philosopher Kant who proposed, a human beings should never be treated as a means, but always as an end. But should we transfer this ethical statement into the world of software? I doubt it.   Reason #1: Human beings are categorially different from code. They are autonomous entities who need to find a way of living happily together. To Kant it seemed this goal could only be reached if nobody (ab)used a human being for his/her purposes. Because using a human being, i.e. treating it as a means, would contradict the fundamental autonomy and freedom of human beings. People should hold up a symmetric view of their relationships: Since nobody wants to be (ab)used, nobody should (ab)use anybody else. If you want to be treated decently, with respect, in accordance with your own free will - which means as an end - then do the same to other people. Code is dead, it´s a product, it´s a tool for people to reach their goals. No company spends any money on code other than to save money or earn money in the long run. Code is not a puppy. Enterprises do not commission software development to just feel good in its company. Code is not a buddy. Code is a slave, if you will. A mechanical slave, a non-tangible robot. Code is a tool, is a tool. And if we start to treat it differently, if we elevate its status unduely… I guess that will contort our relationship in a contraproductive way. Please get me right: Just because something is “just a tool”, “just a product” does not mean we should not be careful while designing, building, using it. Right to the contrary. We should be very careful when writing code – but not for the code´s sake! We should be careful because we respect our customers who are fellow human beings who should be treated as an end. If we are careless, neglectful, ignorant when producing code on their behalf, then we´re using them. Being sloppy means you´re caring more for yourself that for your customer. You´re then treating the customer as a means to fulfill some of your own needs. That´s plain unethical behavior.   Reason #2: The focus should always be on your purpose, not on any tool. But if code is treated as an end, then the focus is on the code. That might sound right, because where else should be your focus as a software developer? But, well, I´d say, your focus should be on delivering value to your customer. Because in the end your customer does not care if you write a single line of code. She just wants her problem to be solved. Solving problems is the purpose of any contractor. Code must be treated just as a means, a tool we know how to handle very well. But if we´re really trying to be craftsmen then we should be conscious about exactly that and act ethically. That means we must never be so focused on our tool as to be unable to suggest better solutions to the problems of our customers than code.   I´m all with Paul when he urges us to “Write great code”. Sure, if you need to write code, then by all means do so. Write the best code you can think of – and then try to improve it. Paul has all the best intentions when he signs Brians “treat code as an end” - but as we all know: “The road to hell is paved with best intentions” ;-) Yes, I can imagine a “hell of code focus”. In fact, I don´t need to imagine it, I´m seeing it quite often. Because code hell is whereever two developers stand together and are so immersed in talking about all sorts of coding tricks, design patterns, code smells, technologies, platforms, tools that they lose sight of the big picture. Talking about TDD or SOLID or refactoring is a sign of consciousness – relative to the “cowboy coders” view of the world. But from yet another point of view TDD, SOLID, and refactoring are just cures for ailments within a system. And I fear, if “Writing great code” is the only focus or the main focus of software development, then we as an industry lose the ability to see that. Focus draws a line around something, it defines a horizon for perceptions and thinking. So if we focus on code our horizon ends where “the land of code” ends. I don´t think that should be our professional attitude.   So what about Software Craftsmanship as the next big thing after Agility? I think Software Craftsmanship has an important message for all software developers and beyond. But to make it the successor of the Agility movement seems to miss a point. Agility never claimed to solve all software development problems, I´d say. So to blame it for having missed out on certain aspects of it is wrong. If I had to summarize Agility in one word I´d say “Value”. Agility put value for the customer back in software development. Focus on delivering value early and often – that´s Agility´s mantra. All else follows from that. And I ask you: Is that obsolete? Is delivering value not hip anymore? No, sure not. That´s our very purpose as software developers. So how can Agility become obsolete and need to be replaced? We need to do away with this “either/or”-thinking. It´s either Agility or Lean or Software Craftsmanship or whatnot. Instead we should start integrating concepts and movements. Think “both/and”. Think Agility plus Software Craftsmanship plus Lean plus whatnot. We don´t neet to tear down anything from a piedestal and replace it with a new idol. Instead we should do away with piedestals and arrange whatever is helpful is a circle. Then we can turn to concepts, movements for whatever they are best. After 10 years of Agility we should be able to identify what it was good at – and keep that. Keep Agility around and add whatever Agility was lacking or never concerned with. Add whatever is at the core of Software Craftsmanship. Add whatever is at the core of Lean etc. But don´t call out the age of Post-Agility. Because it better never will end. Because once we start to lose Agility´s core we´re losing focus of the customer.

  • switch between two cursors based on parameter passed into stored procedure

    - by db83
Hi, I have two cursors in my procedure that only differ on the table name that they join to. The cursor that is used is determined by a parameter passed into the procedure if (param = 'A') then DECLARE CURSOR myCursor IS SELECT x,y,z FROM table1 a, table2 b BEGIN FOR aRecord in myCursor LOOP proc2(aRecord.x, aRecord.y, aRecord.z); END LOOP; COMMIT; END; elsif (param = 'B') then DECLARE CURSOR myCursor IS SELECT x,y,z FROM table1 a, table3 b -- different table BEGIN FOR aRecord in myCursor LOOP proc2(aRecord.x, aRecord.y, aRecord.z); END LOOP; COMMIT; END; end if I don't want to repeat the code for the sake of one different table. Any suggestions on how to improve this? Thanks in advance

  • Wrapping \NewEnviron into \newenvironment fails

    - by o_O Tync
Hello! I am trying to wrap an environment created with \NewEnviron (package 'environ') into an old good \newenvironment: \NewEnviron{test}{aaa(\BODY)bbb} \newenvironment{wrapper}{\begin{test}}{\end{test}} \begin{wrapper} debug me \end{wrapper} However, this gives me a strange error: LaTeX Error: \begin{test} on input line 15 ended by \end{wrapper}. LaTeX Error: \begin{wrapper} on input line 15 ended by \end{document}. If I replace \NewEnviron{test}{aaa(\BODY)bbb} with \newenvironment{test}{aaa(}{)bbb} — everything works as expected! It seems like \NewEnviron fails to find its end for some reason. I'm trying to do some magic with 'floatfig' wrapped into a \colorbox so I need a way to convert \colorbox to an environment and wrap it into another one. I can define a new command but it's not a very good idea. Thanks in advance!

  • Ruby and Forking

    - by Cory
Quick question about Ruby forking - I ran across a bit of forking code in Resque earlier that was sexy as hell but tripped me up for a few. I'm hoping for someone to give me a little more detail about what's going on here. Specifically - it would appear that forking spawns a child (expected) and kicks it straight into the 'else' side of my condition (less expected. Is that expected behavior? A Ruby idiom? My IRB hack here: def fork return true if @cant_fork begin if Kernel.respond_to?(:fork) Kernel.fork else raise NotImplementedError end rescue NotImplementedError @cant_fork = true nil end end def do_something puts "Starting do_something" if foo = fork puts "we are forking from #{Process.pid}" Process.wait else puts "no need to fork, let's get to work: #{Process.pid} under #{Process.ppid}" puts "doing it" end end do_something

  • Passing List (Of ChildClass) as parameter to method expecting List (Of ParentClass)?

    - by Nicholas
Hi, I have implemented inheritance for two parent classes called Table and Field. Each parent class has several child classes. In the Table parent class, I created a method that expects parameter List(Of Field). I get an error when trying to pass in parameter List(Of ChildField) to the method that expects a parameter of List(Of Field). The error message is as below: Value of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of com.hlb.icisbatch.data.ChildField)' cannot be converted to 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of com.hlb.icisbatch.data.Field)' My question, is it possible to pass in list of child class as parameter? If it is not a list then it works fine. But somehow it is not possible with lists? Below is sample class structure: Table Field | | ChildTable ChildField I have a method in the parent class: Public Class Table Public Sub New() End Sub Public Overridable Sub setFields(ByVal list As List(Of Field) 'Do work here' End Sub End Class and method in child class: Public Class ChildTable Public Sub New(ByVal list As List(Of ChildField) setFields(ChildField) End Sub End Class

  • How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

    - by Cerin
How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg. • ruby-gstreamer doesn't send EOS message

    - by Cheba
I've managed to make it play sound but it never gets EOS message. And thus script never exits. require 'gst' main_loop = GLib::MainLoop.new pipeline = Gst::Pipeline.new "audio-player" source = Gst::ElementFactory.make "filesrc", "file-source" source.location = "/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/bark.ogg" decoder = Gst::ElementFactory.make "decodebin", "decoder" conv = Gst::ElementFactory.make "audioconvert", "converter" sink = Gst::ElementFactory.make "alsasink", "output" pipeline.add source, decoder, conv, sink source >> decoder conv >> sink decoder.signal_connect "pad-added" do |element, pad, data| pad >> conv['sink'] end pipeline.bus.add_watch do |bus, message| puts "Message: #{message.inspect}" case message.type when Gst::Message::Type::ERROR puts message.structure["debug"] main_loop.quit when Gst::Message::Type::EOS puts 'End of stream' main_loop.quit end end pipeline.play begin puts 'Running main loop' main_loop.run ensure puts 'Shutting down main loop' pipeline.stop end
