  On a CentOS server running Plesk, new users are added for each new domain. The users' home directories are in /var/www/vhosts/. • Grub: Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported

  I'm trying to change the resolution on my base shell (the Ctrl+Alt+1) shell in Debian so that it supports my ViewSonic monitor. The shell appears really fuzzy when it is displayed on my lcd monitor, but GRUB looks fine when it's displayed. In I tried changing part of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to 'vga=ask', and now I get the error on booting up 'Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported' Has this 'vga=ask' value been changed to something else? Note, I tried setting it to 'vga=782' after finding a list of screen modes here and the shell font got real huge for a few seconds during boot up, and then switched back to it's awful fuzzy self again, when I went to use the Debian Bash shell. UPDATE Tried suggestion in this question, it works without fuzziness until the last resolution change which displays the user login to the shell.

• HDFS datanode startup fails when disks are full

  Our HDFS cluster is only 90% full but some datanodes have some disks that are 100% full. That means when we mass reboot the entire cluster some datanodes completely fail to start with a message like this: 2013-10-26 03:58:27,295 ERROR org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.datanode.DataNode: java.io.IOException: Mkdirs failed to create /mnt/local/sda1/hadoop/dfsdata/blocksBeingWritten Only three have to fail this way before we start experiencing real data loss. Currently we workaround it by decreasing the amount of space reserved for the root user but we'll eventually run out. We also run the re-balancer pretty much constantly, but some disks stay stuck at 100% anyway. Changing the dfs.datanode.failed.volumes.tolerated setting is not the solution as the volume has not failed. Any ideas?

  Are there any benefits of converting HDDs that are running NTFS on a Linux machine to ZFS? Is there a way to do such conversion in Linux without losing the data? What about the stability of ZFS on Linux, does FUSE really work well in this case? People say that the only way to get the real full ZFS support is to install Solaris. I understand that the best choice for Linux would be ext4, but I really havent found a way how to convert to ext4 from NTFS without sacrificing all the data. On the other hand I have doubts whether changing from NTFS to ZFS while using Linux is really wise. Thanks for any tips.

• unable to install mysql completely on debian 5.0

  hi, its been a couple of days that I'm trying to install mysql on my vps which has debian 5.0 with 256mb ram. I've installed webmin also. here is the symptoms : after installing mysql using either webmin or apt-get I am trying to connect to mysql for changing root password but every time I cope with this error : ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) so I start to investigate and I understand there is no root user inside mysql database when I use : UPDATE user SET password=PASSWORD('newpassword') WHERE user="root"; it says 0 row affected I reinstall mysql for several times but the same problem still exits. please help me how can I install mysql-server as well as mysql-client correctly. regards.

• How to change password schema for Dovecot user authentication for an already existing mail server

  Hello, I have an email server setup on Debian Lenny with Postfix, Dovecot, SASL and MySQL. Currently, the password scheme in my dovecot-sql.conf file is set to: CRYPT default_pass_scheme = CRYPT I would like to globally change the scheme to something stronger like SSHA, or MD5-CRYPT and re-hash all passwords with SSHA. What is the best way to do this? The Dovecot wiki mentions how passwords that don't follow the default scheme defined in dovecot-sql.conf can be prefixed with "{ssha}password", but I couldn't see anything regarding changing an already-existing scheme to a new one for all passwords that are already in the database.   I want to run some test on hardware level. My goal is to create or find a way to control one computer from another down to BIOS settings changing. For example: Master computer sends a signal for slave to restart and opens BIOS settings dialog. Master computer sends a signal to slave to change BIOS parameters and then restart. Then slave fully boots up master starts up some software on slave. Then software finishes operations cycle continues till certain conditions are met. I know that I am looking for a complex thing but mainly what I need are correct keywords because now I am being flooded by BIOS configurations tutorials. Main concerns: Is it possible without using any custom tailer chip? How can master monitor salve`s hardware activity? How to let master handled more than one slave? • Wordpress network admin pointing to root as opposed to subdirectory

  I've installed Wordpress on my nginx server in /blogs and new networks will be in /blogs/blogname. • Windows Advanced Firewall certificate based IPSEC

  I'm working on migrating from using IPSEC settings stored under the 'IP Security Policies on Active Directory' to using the 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' for my 2008+ boxes. I have successfully been able to get this set up using Kerberos authentication, however my openswan implementation on my Linux boxes is using certificates. Whenever I try changing the authentication method to computer certificate (using RSA and my root CA) the connection is bombing out. I've made this change at both a connection request policy and on the IPSEC settings on the root Windows Firewall with Advanced Security node. The windows event log shows the authentication request is taking place but failing negotiating a mode. What am I missing here?

• CentOS 6.5 server time zone won't persist?

  I'm setting my timezone like so: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/London /etc/localtime It works fine, I check with date and all is good. But then a few days later I'll realise it's reset itself to CEST, so 9am becomes 10am, etc. The server is located in Paris, in the CEST time zone. But I should be able to use any zone I want, surely? I (and most of my users) am based in the UK, so I want to operate on that timezone. I just did a yum update and noticed it wanted to update tzdata. That had the effect of changing from BST to CEST, but I don't think it's the only thing that triggers the change, as I'm sure it's gone wrong on days where I've done no such update. I could be wrong though. What's the trick to set a timezone permanently? Thanks

• Stupid question: prevent file from being changed under linux

  Ok. Stupid question. I have forgotten what this is called and without remembering the name the search function on the site and on google is failing me. What's the command under linux to mark a file as "locked"/to prevent any changes from being made to it? I'm not talking about chmod. There's a property that can be set (again the name escapes me at the moment) which prevents even processes running as root from changing a file. What is this called and how do I set it?

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4 GHz). The Wi-Fi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the Linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without any issues.   Hi there I'm trying to make a backup/copy of my virtual machine, it's installed in a Windows Server 2000 and I want to make some modifications/tests without changing the original one. The copy is to be used in Windows 7, what I'm trying to do is work/modify an application that communicates with a DB, this application is hosted on the VM, the DB too, and since I don't want to screw up the stable version I want to know how to copy the VM to my desktop pc to experiment without worries. Now, someone told me I might have problems with the IP 'cause the original will have the same IP, and if I change it, it won't work properly. Is this true? If it is indeed true, any suggestions??

• Recovering from bad ownership

  I was going to change the ownership of a directory to apache:apache, but I ended up running: chown -R apache:apache / Bad! Very bad! I knew what was going on when it started saying: chown: changing ownership of `/proc/2694/fd/48': Permission denied That's when I stopped everything (Ctrl+C). The current system I have is a server running virtualbox running CentOS 5. This problem happened inside the VM. Currently, everything seems to be working, but I have not restarted the system yet, and to be honest, I'm afraid that if I did something will break. I do not know chown's order, should I be concerned and assume something will break after a reboot? Is there a way to recover form this problem without having to rely on backups? I do have a daily one, but I thought there may be a simpler way out.

• Excel chart won't update, based on calculated cells

  I have an Excel document (2007) with a chart (Clustered Column) that gets its Data Series from cells containing calculated values The calculated values never change directly, but only as a result of other cells in the sheet changing When I change other cells in the sheet, the Data Series cells are recalculated, and show new values - but the Chart based on this Data Series refuses to update automatically I can get the Chart to update by saving/closing, or toggling one of the settings (such as reversing x/y axis and then putting it back), or by re-selecting the Data Series Every solution I have found online doesn't work - I have Calculation set to automatic - Ctrl+Alt+F9 updates everything fine, EXCEPT the chart - I have recreated the chart several times, and on different computers - I have tried VBA scripts like: Application.Calculate Application.CalculateFull Application.CalculateFullRebuild ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll DoEvents None of these update or refresh the chart I do notice that if I type over my Data Series, actual numbers instead of calculations, it will update the chart - it's as if Excel doesn't want to recognize changes in the calculations Has anyone experienced this before or know what I might do to fix the problem?   Hello, How do I go about debugging a networking problem where the office printer is shared off a Windows XP PC and is very slow from me to access? Print/changing any settings can take several minutes and applications often display "Not Responding" in this time. My machine is a Windows Vista PC. The other PCs in the office are either Vista or XP and do not suffer from any printing problems. I am not experiencing any other network related problems, I can access the web and e-mail fine. • RewriteRule in htaccess in subdirectory

  Windows server, running Apache. In my Apache conf, I have AllowOverride None for the root of a site and then I have a subdirectory set to AllowOverride All: <Directory /> AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory "/safe/"> AllowOverride All </Directory> However, when I try to set up a rewrite rule in the subdirectory's htaccess file, nothing happens, I just get a 404 page not found error. Example: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule (.*) /blah?test=$1 [R=302,NC,NE,L] Rwewriting URLs are working fine from the root via the Apache conf. I don't understand why the rule is ignored. I don't want to do the URL re-writing within the conf because for this case I may need to be changing the redirects constantly and don't want to reload the server every time a change is made. I also don't want to affect server performance by enabling htaccess files site-wide, just in the subdirectory I need it.

• unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

  Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

• Windows 7 Public Documents Folder - how to move it to drive d:

  Hi, I've just bought a new pc, and it is running Windows 7. I'm wanting to set up all of the documents folders such that they point to folders on a second drive partition (ie. disk D:) so that I have a nice separation of os from docs. I have managed to do this for each user on the machine (by opening up properties for documents folder and changing location). Hwoever, this procedure doesn't seem to work for the public documents folder. I cannot change the location for that one (even though I have administrator privileges). It is greyed out and cannot be changed. Any ideas ? Thanks!!

• Windows Server 2008 Static IP Address

  I have Win 2008 Server VM and want to set static IP address so that i can RDP into instead of using VM player (mouse gets out of focus as the size of the VM increases). Now while making the changes i see two TC/IPv6 and TC/IPv4 i try changing the IPaddress from obtain autimatically, but it always goes to "Unidentified Network". If i leave it to automatically obtain IP,i still cannot RDP into it. I have tired disabling TC/IPv6 from reistry. Any other suggestions? BTW the same setting works fine with WIN XP and i can RDP into all Win XP VM's Cheers Gauls

• Why my browsers display XML files as blank pages?

  Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please? • mongod fork vs nohup

  I'm currently writing process management software. One package we use is mongo. Is there any difference between launching mongo with mongod --fork --logpath=/my/path/mongo.log and nohup mongod >> /my/path/mongo.log 2>&1 < /dev/null & ? My first thought was that --fork could spawn more processes and/or threads, and I was suggested that --fork could be useful for changing the effective user (downgrading privileges). But we run all under the same user (process manager and mongod), so is there any other difference? Thank you

• Why does my Mac address reset after reconnecting?

  I have ubuntu 12. I'm changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx which works. However when I restart my connection my computer resets my mac to my original mac address. I'm guessing that this happens because something calls... ifconfig wlan0 down ... do something before connecting ifconfig wlan0 up ... connect to designated access point I want my mac address to however be the same no matter how many times I disconnect and reconnect, whether to another network or the same one. Also it would be nice to turn off the auto-connect feature for my network-manager with out having to edit each individual connection. Lastly I would like to know how to connect to a wifi network through the terminal and not via gui network manager ubuntu provides.

• mini-dinstall chmod 0600 changes file: Operation not permitted

  I'm getting "Operation not permitted" in the mini-dinstall.log everytime a new debian package has been uploaded on the custom debian repository using dput. The deb file is installed successfuly but the changes file remains in the incoming folder. I can not use a post-install script when the changes file can not be processed. How can I fix this problem? • Unable to edit/delete/move /etc/my.cnf - Permission denied

  I am trying to edit /etc/my.cnf as root user via ssh and I get following error while trying to save it I ma making changes to my.cnf as I want to tweak some values in my.cnf to meet Magento requirement like changing key_buffer_size= to higher value (128M). I assigned the value 128M to key_buffer_size= and tried to save it and then got an error. "Error writing /etc/my.cnf: Permission denied" I cant even restart MySQL successfully. [root@flourish ~]# service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] I can even delete or replace it with the fresh one. I tried uninstalling MySQL and re-installing but nothing worked. Permission -rw-r--r-- and Owner/Group root/root I hope there is some answer to this problem.
