    It's common to declared contained objects as a pointers to that class, while "forward declarating" them in header file. This in order to reduce physical dependencies in code. For example class B; // forward declaration class A { private: B* pB; }; Would it be good idea to declare such a member as shared_ptr, instead of naked pointer? I would prefer scoped_ptr, but AFAIKit it won't be in standard.

  • Return statements for all functions

    How common is it for coding style guidelines to include a requirement that all functions include a return statement (including functions which return void)? To avoid being subjective or argumentative, I'd like answers which can name specific companies or open-source projects which have this requirement.   • How does Dropbox use Python on Windows and OS X?

    In Windows the Dropbox client uses python25.dll and the MS C runtime libraries (msvcp71.dll, etc). On OS X the Python code is compiled bytecode (pyc). My guess is they are using a common library they have written then just have to use different hooks for the different platforms. What method of development is this? It clearly isn't IronPython or PyObjC. This paradigm is so appealing to me, but my CS foo and Google foo are failing me.

  • getopt implicit declaration in Solaris?

    In Solaris, gcc gives me implicit declaration of function `getopt' when compiling #include <unistd.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { getopt(1,argv,""); return 0; } The man page for getopt says something about including unistd.h or stdio.h, however even though I'm inluding both I still get this warning. Is this normal? Is using functions that aren't explicitly declared common in Unix development?

At this point I'm mostly curious about how the files should be arranged into directories so that development of the website can be manageable. This includes javascript scripts, images, stylesheets, cgi scripts, html files, pure php files that define common functions, etc. Question: Can someone point me to an explanation about how such a website is typically organized on the server?

    I have a small JavaScript validation script that validates inputs based on Regex. I want to allow certain characters that are not exactly common (not sure if they're UTF8). For example I want to allow the following character ’, which looks like a single quote, but isn't. I got the HTML code for this which is &#8217;, but I'm not sure how to put this into the Regex. I've tried just inputting [&#8217]* but it doesn't validate.

I would like to be able to 'parse' in all the words and get a ranking of the most used words (disregarding common words) to spot a trend. How can I do this? Is there a program I can use?     Normally one would have a webroot that looks like this: /www/ | +--index.php | +-- js/ | | | +-- xyz.js | +-- css/ | | | +--xyz.css | +---etc..... With my setup, it is going to be most beneficial for me to move everything into a common subfolder, leaving the index.php of the Cake app in the root. I.e: /www/ | +--index.php | | +-- resources | +-- js/ | | | +-- xyz.js | +-- css/ | | | +--xyz.css | +---etc..... What is my .htaccess going to look like? Thanks!

  • Save file as - dialog box with dynamic data

    I know that this question is quite common, but its specifics are stumping me. I have an "export" button which I want to take a load of data generated, create a CSV file, then pop up a Save File As dialog box, to save that file on their local machine. The name of this file is dynamic, also. I know how to make the CSV file, but how do I then pop up a box on the client side to let the user download it? I am using JSP with Struts
