(I can only create New Website) My colleague has the exact same version (if you go to Help - About) but they can create both New Website and New Project. I am trying to do this tutorial on MVC that also says that you can do it on Web Developer Express (http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc/tutorial-21-cs.aspx) How do you enable New Project on Visual Web Developer 2008 Express?

  • For a .NET winforms datagridview I would like a combobox column to have a different set of values for each row.

    Hello, I have a DataGridView that I am binding to a POCO. I have the databinding working fine. However, I have added a combobox column that I want to be different for each row. Specifically, I have a grid of purchased items, some of which have sizes (like Adult XL, Adult L) and other items are not sized (like Car Magnet.) So essentially what I want to change is the DATA SOURCE for a combobox column in the data grid. Can that be done? What event can I hook into that would allow me to change properties of certain columns FOR EACH ROW? An acceptable alternative is to change a property when the user clicks or tabs into the row. What event is that? Seth EDIT I need more help with this question. With Triduses help I am SO close but I need a bit more information. First, per the question, is the CellFormatting event really the best/only event for changing the DataSource for a combo box column. I ask because I am doing something rather resource/data intensive, not merely formatting the cell. Second, the cellformatting event is being called just by having the mouse hover over the cell. I tried to set the FormattingApplied property inside my if-block and then I check for it in the if- test but that is returning a weird error message. My ideal situation is that I would apply change the data source for the combo box once for each row and then be done with it. Finally, in order to set the data source of the combobox colunm I have to be able to cast the Cell inside my if block to a type of DataGridViewComboBoxColumn so that I can fill it with rows or set the datasource or something. Here is the code I have right now.     Background, I am extending the ASP.NET Membership with custom classes and extra tables. The ASP.NET MembershipUser has a protected constructor and a public method to read the data from the database. I have extended the database structure with custom tables and associated classes. Instead of using a static method to create a new member, as in the original API: I allow the code to instantiate a simple object and fill the data because there are several entities. Original Pattern #1 Protected constructor > static CreateUser(string mydata, string, mydata, ...) > User.Data = mydata; > User.Update() My Preferred Pattern #2 Public constructor > newUser = new MembershipUser(); > newUser.data = ... > newUser.ComplextObject.Data = ... > newUser.Insert() > newUser.Load(string key) I find pattern #2 to be easier and more natural to use. But method #1 is more atomic and ensured to contain proper data. I'd like to hear any opinions on pros/cons. The problem in my mind is that I prefer a simple CRUD/object but I am, also, trying to utilize the underlying API. These methods do not match completely. For example, the API has methods, like UnlockUser() and a readonly property for the IsLockedOut

  • SQL CE unspecified error

    Hello, I did a project with MS SQL Server CE that when installed in the 'costumer' machine just raises an unspecified excpetion. Did some research and looks like I did everything mentioned. The dev env has sql compact 3.5 installed and sql tools for vs 2005. Using dotNet 3.5. But to make it run in de dev machine I need to add the sqlcese30, sqlceqp30, sqlceme and sqlcecompact30 dlls and its works fine. The setup project put dotNet 2.0 as dependecy and I also added the dlls but it raises the exception and I cannot see where or what it is. Its just a single 'unspecified error' message. please help :)

  • How to store the path of a game pawn in a turn based game ?

    Hello, I have a square grid, for a turn based game ( grid is similar to the chess board ), but the moves in the games are different based on whether you have lapped your opponent pawn at least once or not. i.e if you have not lapped (beaten any of the opponents pawns) in the outer most grid as below if you have lapped your opponent pawn once at least, then you get to reach home,this way.Any player having all his pawns reaching "home" first wins. The ones in yellow are safe-houses, i.e both the opponent pawn and the player's pawn get to stay in the same grid, this is not considered to be lapping ( the opponent ).The lapped pawn will return to its start point. Now the question is, what is the effective way to store the paths for the all the pawns.we will have 4 pawns for the player and 4 opponent pawns. Is there any pattern to store such static information, in a elegant way ? Thanks for your time

So if one then of course it goes to case 1. If there are 2 opened then it moves the oldest down and puts the newest on top. etc etc. I have set it so that a max of 6 boxes can only be opened at one time.     Today I came to a fundamental paradox of the object programming style, concrete types or interfaces. Whats the better election for a method's return type: a concrete type or an interface? In most cases, I tend to use concrete types as the return type for methods. because I believe that an concrete type is more flexible for further use and exposes more functionality. The dark side of this: Coupling. The angelic one: A concrete type contains per-se the interface you would going to return initially, and extra functionality. What's your thumb's rule?   • Customize VisualStudio syntax highlighting even more

    Hi everybody, I am wondering if it is possible to set VisualStudio IDE so it highlights private/protected/public variables of the class differently as well as change formatting on locals (i.e. variables that are either passed in or declared inside a function, like this). I did not find any such options in the normal Fonts and Colors menu of VS. Also a search on SO reveals that (at least as of 2 years ago) only add-ons provide such features. But is there a way to manually edit some file? Just because we don't get a nice UI to edit, doesn't mean underlying framework automatically doesn't support it. I mean add-ons have to plug into something to do their magic in the editor. Any insights into this issue? Thanks!

  • What makes static initialization functions good, bad, or otherwise?

    Suppose you had code like this: _READERS = None _WRITERS = None def Init(num_readers, reader_params, num_writers, writer_params, ...args...): ...logic... _READERS = new ReaderPool(num_readers, reader_params) _WRITERS = new WriterPool(num_writers, writer_params) ...more logic... class Doer: def __init__(...args...): ... def Read(self, ...args...): c = _READERS.get() try: ...work with conn finally: _READERS.put(c) def Writer(...): ...similar to Read()... To me, this is a bad pattern to follow, some cons: Doers can be created without its preconditions being satisfied The code isn't easily testable because ConnPool can't be directly mocked out. Init has to be called right the first time. If its changed so it can be called multiple times, extra logic has to be added to check if variables are already defined, and lots of NULL values have to be passed around to skip re-initializing. In the event of threads, the above becomes more complicated by adding locking Globals aren't being used to communicate state (which isn't strictly bad, but a code smell) On the other hand, some pros: its very convenient to call Init(5, "user/pass", 2, "user/pass") It simple and "clean" Personally, I think the cons outweigh the pros, that is, testability and assured preconditions outweigh simplicity and convenience.

    I'm trying to install Microsoft Visual C# Express 2010 Beta 2 on my machine but it's not working. It blazes through what should be a 150 MB download then fails installing the very first item after about 5 seconds. I had VS 2010 Beta 1 installed but removed it beforehand. Any tips for installing it right?   • C# 2008 Express v C# 2010 Express

    Can anybody post a link to a comparison chart, or even to a duplicated question here on SO, for these two products? Plenty of info on what is missing between Express and Pro for example, but I'm struggling to find much on Express v Express. Is the only real difference the ability to develop apps for .NET 4.0? I'm developing WinForms apps, targetting .NET 2.0 at the moment, so are there any benefits for me in changing to 2010 Express? Unfortunately, upgrading to VS Professional or such is not an option for me right now, so I'm stuck with the hamstrung versions. Thanks.

    When I try to open a project's CodeAnalysis page I get the error "An error occurred trying to load the page. Only TrueType fonts are supported. This is not a TrueType font." I also get a very simmilar ExceptionBox when I want to open the solution's propertywindow: "Only TrueType fonts are supported. This is not a TrueType font." Has anyone experiences with this error?

    Hi, I got a problem migrating from VS.Net 2008 / MVC 1 to VS.NET 2010 (+C# 4.0) / MVC 2 The web.config has been updated, the site runs well in Cassini, but my problem now is deploying on IIS 6. I updated the web site to run using ASP.Net 4, but whatever URL I try, I always have a 404 error. It's as if the routing was not taken into account (yes, the wildcard mapping has been done). I do not understand this mess and could not google anything interesting... Thanks for your suggestions ! O.

  • Vertical mouse scrolling wheel not working in VS 2010 Ultimate

    The title says it all. I tried it with two different mice- both of which work perfectly fine in all other applications. The mouse is MS Intellimouse Optical. I even tried to speed up the vertical scroll through the mouse utility and still nothing. It barely moves the code a tiny bit and then it stops. I had no problems at all with VS 2008 which is concurrently installed in the same machine. Am I the only one having this???

    Is it possible to create Windows CE 5.0 images (ie: nk.bin) from VS2005/VS2008 without using Platform Builder? If so, how? Can a vendor BSP for WinCE 5 be loaded into VS2005/2008? Are there the parts to do this available for download from Microsoft (ie: the SDK), or must you buy the special bits (a la PB) from a "special distributor"? I know it is possible to build binaries (.dll, .exe) for WinCE 5.0 using VS, my question is about creating entire bootable CE 5.0 images for embedded platforms.

  • Learning Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time? Any resources to recommend?

    Hey guys, I am trying to learn Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time to get involved with sourcemod, a server side modding tool for valve games. However I have never touched Visual C++ or C++ in general, and doing some preliminary research I am quite confused on these different versions of C++ (mfc, cli, win32), and why a lot of people seem to hate Visual C++ and use something like Borland instead. I really learn visually, and have used videos from places like Lynda.com with great success. I was wondering if anyone had any exceptional resources they had come across to teach Visual C++ 2k8, with its intricacies and setting up the IDE along with C++ at the same time. Books would be nice, but videos would be preferred, and I don't mind paying for resources. Thanks in advance!

    I have just started using WiX for the first time. I added a WiX Votive project to my existing C project. To automatically select the correct source folder for the binaries add used the following: <Directory Id="INSTALLLOCATION" Name="Trapeze Capture For Objective" FileSource="$(var.CaptureForObjective.TargetDir)"> That results in the following error: 1C:\code\CaptureForObjective\Installer\Product.wxs(10,0): error CNDL0150: Undefined preprocessor variable '$(var.CaptureForObjective.TargetDir)'. The C project is called CaptureForObjective, and the WiX project is called Installer. What do I need to do to get this to work?

  • Project setup for an ADO.NET/WCF DataService

    I'd like to implement a ADO.NET/WCF DataService and I am wondering what's the best way to setup a project in VS2008 SP1 for this purpose. Currently I have an ASP.NET web application project (not of "WebSite" project type). The data access layer is an Entity model (EF version 1) with SQL Server database. I have the Entity Model in a separate DLL project and the web application project references to this assembly for all data accesses. The ADO.NET/WCF DataService needs to communicate with the Entity model/database as well. It has to be hosted on the same web server (IIS 7.5) together with the web application. Since the DataService is not directly related to that specific web application (though it will provide and modify data from/in the same database the web application uses as well) my basic idea was to separate the DataService in its own new project (which also references the Entity Model DLL). Now I have seen that there is no project type "ADO.NET/WCF DataService" in VS2008 SP1. It seems only possible to add a DataService as an element to other existing projects, for instance Web Application projects. Why isn't there a separate DataService project type? Does this mean now that I have to add the DataService as an element to my Web Application project? Or shall I create a new Web Application project and add a DataService to it? (I could delete the pregenerated default.aspx since I do not need any web pages in this project.) What's the best way? Thank you for suggestions in advance!
