• Cowboy Agile?

  In a previous post, I outlined the rules of Scrum.  This post details one of those rules. I’ve often heard similar phrases around Scrum that clue me in to someone who doesn’t understand Scrum.  The phrases go something like this: “We don’t do Agile because the idea of letting people just do whatever they want is wrong.  We believe in a more structured approach.” (i.e. Work is Prison, and I’m the Warden!) “I love Agile.  Agile lets us do whatever we want!” (Cowboy Agile?) “We’re Agile, but we use a process that I’ve created.” (Cowboy Agile?) All of those phrases have one thing in common:  The assumption that Agile, and I mean Scrum, lets you do whatever you want.  This is simply not true. Executing Scrum properly requires more dedication, rigor, and diligence than happens in most traditional development methods. Scrum and Waterfall Compared Since Scrum and Waterfall are two of the most commonly used methodologies, a little bit of contrasting and comparing is in order. Waterfall Scrum A project manager defines all tasks and then manages the tasks that team members are working on. The team members define the tasks and estimates of the stories for the current iteration.  Any team member may work on any task in the iteration. Usually only a few milestones that need to be met, the milestones are measured in months, and these milestones are expected to be missed.  Little work is ever done to improve estimates and poor estimators can hide behind high estimates. Stories must be delivered every iteration, milestones are measured in hours, and the team is expected to figure out why their estimates were wrong, even when they were under.  Repeated misses can get the entire team fired. Partially completed work is normal. Partially completed work doesn’t count. Nobody knows the task you’re working on. Everyone knows what you’re working on, whether or not you’re making progress and how much longer you think its going to take, in hours. Little requirement to show working code.  Prototypes are ok. Working code must be shown each iteration.  No smoke and mirrors allowed.  Testing is done in lengthy cycles at the end of development.  Developers aren’t held accountable. Testing is part of the team.  If the testers don’t accept the story as complete, the team can’t count it.  Complete means that the story’s functionality works as designed.  The team can’t have any open defects on the story. Velocity is rarely truly measured and difficult to evaluate. Velocity is integral to the process and can be seen at a glance and everyone in the company knows what it is. A business analyst writes requirements.  Designers mock up screens.  Developers hide behind “I did it just like the spec doc told me to and made the screen exactly like the picture” Developers are expected to collaborate in real time.  If a design is bad or lacks needed details, the developers are required to get it right in the iteration, because all software must be functional.  Designers and Business Analysts are part of the team and must do their work in iterations slightly ahead of the developers. Upper Management is often surprised.  “You told me things were going well two months ago!” Management receives updates at the end of every iteration showing them exactly what the team did and how that compares to what' is remaining in the backlog.  Managers know every iteration what their money is buying. Status meetings are rare or don’t occur.  Email is a primary form of communication. Teams coordinate every single day with each other and use other high bandwidth communication channels to make sure they’re making progress.  Email is used only as a last resort.  Instead, team members stand up, walk to each other, and talk, face to face.  If that’s not possible, they pick up the phone. IF someone asks what happened, its at the end of a lengthy development cycle measured in months, and nobody really knows why it happened. Someone asks what happened every iteration.  The team talks about what happened, and then adapts to make sure that what happened either never happens again or happens every time.   That’s probably enough for now.  As you can see, a lot is required of Scrum teams! One of the key differences in Scrum is that the burden for many activities is shifted to a group of people who share responsibility, instead of a single person having responsibility.  This is a very good thing, since small groups usually come up with better and more insightful work than single individuals.  This shift also results in better velocity.  Team members can take vacations and the rest of the team simply picks up the slack.  With Waterfall, if a key team member takes a vacation, delays can ensue. Scrum requires much more out of every team member and as a result, Scrum teams outperform non-Scrum teams working 60 hour weeks. In case of html5 drag and drop you need to have site opened and have opened that page which is about file upload. You need to select all  and drag and drop. after drag and drop file is simply uploaded to server and site show you on list (if no error happen). but this file upload is seriously not worthy since I have to open the site when I do this operation.   Through this post I want to describe a feature that can make this thing better.  This API is simply called SASS FILE UPLOAD API Through This API when you surf the site and come into file upload page then the page will tell you that we also have SASS FILE API support. Enable it for better result.   How this work This API feature are activated on 2 basis. 1. Feature are disabled by default on site (or you can change it if it’s not) 2. This API allow specific site to upload the files. Files upload may have some rule. For example (minimum or maximum size of file to uploaded, which format the site allowed you to upload). In case of resume site you will be allowed to use .doc (according to code of site)   How browser recognize that Site have SASS service. The windows will also describe the limit and how much you can upload. This thing never required site to opened. When you upload the file this will be uploaded through FTP protocol. FTP protocol are better for performance.   How this API make thing faster. Suppose you want to ask a question and want to post image. you just do it and get it ready when you open stackoverflow.com now stackoverflow will only tell you which file you want to put on your current question that you asking for. second use is about people use cloud app.   There is no need of drag and drop anymore. we just need to do it without drag and drop it. we doesn’t need to open the site either. This thing is still in experiment level. I will update this post when I got some progress on this API.

• If I were in a Silverlight focus group, here is ten things I would say.

  Silverlight is a great product right off the shelf. I use it, love it and spend a lot of time helping the community understand it. This however, doesn’t mean that I don’t think that it can get better. If I were invited to a Microsoft Focus Group about Silverlight here is 10 things I would say:  We need more navigation templates. I’ve found (4) templates that Microsoft has released (Cosmo, Windows 7, Accent and JetPack). This number needs to be around 16. In order to get more people developing for Silverlight, we need to give them a variety of templates to get them off the ground quickly. Silverlight needs to ship with the next version of Windows. At least version 4 needs to be pre-installed on Windows going forward. It’s small, in its own sandbox and I cannot find a reason for it not to be included. Silverlight needs to run on more platforms.  iOS and Android are the key here. I think Microsoft should shoot for Android first since I believe Android will take the lead in the mobile market (at least for the short-term). It would also be great to see Microsoft use Silverlight as the focus on their new tablets / “AppleTV”. I would even invest in getting it working with Kinect. When creating a new project in Silverlight, we should have the option to create a Unit Test. Most Silverlight developers are not unit testing. If this is surprising to you then you need to get out and talk to more developers. I partially blame this on Microsoft. When you create a new ASP.NET MVC application, you simply put a check to create a Unit Test project. We need the same thing for Silverlight. We should steer the developer into the right direction. Design patterns such as MVVM need to be easier to implement in Silverlight solutions.  I’d go so far as to say that MVVM Light should ship with Visual Studio. With the project / item templates and code snippets, Laurent puts you into the right direction. This is the way that it should have been. Easy for the 9-5 developer to grasp. I believe the majority of developers use code behind because that’s what is in all the demos provided by Microsoft. They are not trying to write sucky code it is that they simply don’t know a better way.  The XAP Files should be obfuscated/unused references deleted by default when in “Release” mode. A better Silverlight experience starts with a smaller XAP file. The less that a user has to download is the better, even with the majority of people on broadband. I would also recommend built-in obfuscation by Microsoft. People are paranoid that they can rename the .zip and run it through reflector. Get rid of the boring install experiences. Here is a great write up on what I’m talking about. The default “Install Silverlight” and “Loading screens” suck. They suck bad. We need a choice of templates that a professional designer has created.  Silverlight needs to supports more image formats. For example: it would be great to use .gif’s without converting them to .png.    Switching between Blend 4 and VS2010 to develop a Silverlight application is a pain. Probably one of the biggest issues that I can’t think of a good solution for. It would be nice if VS2012 had the best of both worlds and you never have to leave VS. We need reporting controls with SSRS included with the Silverlight Toolkit. I can’t think of another control that we need built into the toolkit. It would also be helpful to have export to .xls, .pdf and .doc included with the control. I hope that this post will at least get a few people talking. • BIP 11g Dynamic SQL

  Back in the 10g release, if you wanted something beyond the standard query for your report extract; you needed to break out your favorite text editor. You gotta love 'vi' and hate emacs, am I right? And get to building a data template, they were/are lovely to write, such fun ... not! Its not fun writing them by hand but, you do get to do some cool stuff around the data extract including dynamic SQL. By that I mean the ability to add content dynamically to your your query at runtime. With 11g, we spoiled you with a visual builder, no more vi or notepad sessions, a friendly drag and drop interface allowing you to build hierarchical data sets, calculated columns, summary columns, etc. You can still create the dynamic SQL statements, its not so well documented right now, in lieu of doc updates here's the skinny. If you check out the 10g process to create dynamic sql in the docs. You need to create a data trigger function where you assign the dynamic sql to a global variable that's matched in your report SQL. In 11g, the process is really the same, BI Publisher just provides a bit more help to define what trigger code needs to be called. You still need to create the function and place it inside a package in the db. Here's a simple plsql package with the 'beforedata' function trigger. Spec create or replace PACKAGE BIREPORTS AS whereCols varchar2(2000); FUNCTION beforeReportTrig return boolean; end BIREPORTS; Body create or replace PACKAGE BODY BIREPORTS AS   FUNCTION beforeReportTrig return boolean AS   BEGIN       whereCols := ' and d.department_id = 100';     RETURN true;   END beforeReportTrig; END BIREPORTS; you'll notice the additional where clause (whereCols - declared as a public variable) is hard coded. I'll cover parameterizing that in my next post. If you can not wait, check the 10g docs for an example. I have my package compiling successfully in the db. Now, onto the BIP data model definition. 1. Create a new data model and go ahead and create your query(s) as you would normally. 2. In the query dialog box, add in the variables you want replaced at runtime using an ampersand rather than a colon e.g. &whereCols.   select     d.DEPARTMENT_NAME, ...  from    "OE"."EMPLOYEES" e,     "OE"."DEPARTMENTS" d  where   d."DEPARTMENT_ID"= e."DEPARTMENT_ID" &whereCols   Note that 'whereCols' matches the global variable name in our package. When you click OK to clear the dialog, you'll be asked for a default value for the variable, just use ' and 1=1' That leading space is important to keep the SQL valid ie required whitespace. This value will be used for the where clause if case its not set by the function code. 3. Now click on the Event Triggers tree node and create a new trigger of the type Before Data. Type in the default package name, in my example, 'BIREPORTS'. Then hit the update button to get BIP to fetch the valid functions.In my case I get to see the following: Select the BEFOREREPORTTRIG function (or your name) and shuttle it across. 4. Save your data model and now test it. For now, you can update the where clause via the plsql package. Next time ... parametrizing the dynamic clause.

• Adding data (not only text) to a multi column ListView (WPF)

  I am working on a WPF application in C# (.NET 4.0) where I have a ListView with a GridView that has two columns. I dynamically want to add rows (in code). My dilemma is that only the first column will have regular text added to it. The second column will have an object that includes a multi column Grid with TextBlocks. (see link http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/803/listview.png/) If I do what you would normally do when you want to enter text in all columns (ie. DisplayMemberBinding) all I get in the second column is the text "System.Windows.Grid", which obviously isn't what I want. For reference if I just try to add the Grid object (with the TextBlocks) with the code listView1.Items.Add(grid1) (not using DisplayMemberBinding) the object gets added to the second column only (with the first column being blank) and not how it normally works with text where the same text ends up in all columns. I hope my question is detailed enough and any help with this would be much appreciated. EDIT: I have tried the following code, howeever every time I click the button to add a new row every single row gets updated with the same datatemplate. The "Compiling Vim" page linked from there was for Linux, so the commands doesn't even work on Solars. But it did hint at logging the output of ./configure to a file, so I did that. I couldn't just install it, since I don't have root privileges, but I was able to extract the package file. • FILESTREAM/FILETABLE Clarifications for Implementation

  Recently our team was looking at FILESTREAM to expand the capabilities of our proprietary application. The main purpose of this app is managing the various PDFS, Images and documents to all of the parts we manufacture. Our ASP application uses a few third party tools to allow viewing of these files. We currently have 980GB of data on the Fileserver. We have around 200GB of Binary data in SQL Server that we would like to extract since it is not performing well hence FILESTREAM seems to be a good compromise to the two major data storage/access issues. A few things are not exactly clear to us: FILESTREAM Can or Cannot store its data on a drive that is not locally attached. We already have a File Server with a RAID 10 (1.5TB drives). This server stores all of the documents right now, would we have to move these drives to the SQL Server for FILESTREAM? That would be a tough bullet to bite since the server also is doubling as the Application Server (Two VMs on one physical server). FILETABLE stores the common metadata about the files but where is the Full Text part of it stored to allow searching of files like doc/docx? Is this separate? Are you able to freely add criteria to this to search by? If so any links to clarify would be appreciated. Can FILETABLE be referenced in another table with a foreign key? EDIT 2: Update to #1 - After carefully assessing FileTable in addition to FILESTREAM we got a winning combination. We did have to move the files over to the new server (wasn't to painful since they were on the same VM).It honestly took more time to write an extraction tool to dump the binary data within SQL to the File System. Update to #2 - This was seperate but again Bob had an excellent webinar explaining this: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/Europe/2012/DBI411 Update to #3 - Using TFT inheritance we recycled the Docs table we had (minus the huge binary blobs) which required very little changes in our legacy apps. This was a huge upshot for the developer team.

  Howdy all, I've got a table, which won't delete a row. Specifically, when I try to delete any row with a GEO_SHAPE_ID over 150000000 it simply does not disappear from the DB. I have tried: SQLyog to erase it. DELETE FROM TABLE WHERE GEO_SHAPE_ID = 150000042 (0 rows affected). UNLOCK TABLES then 2. As far as I am aware, bigint is a valid candidate for auto_increment. Anyone know what could be up? You gotta help us, Doc. We’ve tried nothin’ and we’re all out of ideas! DJS. PS. Here is the table construct and some sample data just for giggles. • Log4r : logger inheritance, yaml configuration, alternatives ?

  Hello, I'm pretty new to ruby environments and I was looking for a nice logging framework to use it my ruby and rails applications. In my previous experiences I have successfully used log4j and log4p (the perl port) and was expecting the same level of usability (and maturity) with log4r. However I must say that there are a number of things that are not clear at all in the log4r framework. 1 Logger Inheritance The logger inheritance does not seem to be managed at all ! If I declare a logger named 'myapp' and then try to get a logger name 'myapp::engine', the lookup will end with a NameError. I would expect that the framework returns the root logger according to the naming scheme and to use the 'myapp' logger. Q1 : Of course I can work around this and manage the names by myself with a lookup method, however is there a cleaner way to do this without any extra coding ? 2 YAML configuration Second thing that confuses me is the yaml configuration. On the log4r site there are literally no information about this system, the doc links forward to missing pages, so all the info I can find about is contained in the examples directory of the gem. I was pretty confused with the fact that the yaml configuration must contain the pre_config section, and that I need to define my own levels. If I remove the pre_config secion, or replace all the “custom” levels by the standard ones ( debug, info, warn, fatal ) , the example will throw the following error : log4r/yamlconfigurator.rb:68:in `decode_yaml': Log level must be in 0..7 (ArgumentError) So there seems to be no way of using a simple file where we only declare the loggers and appenders for the framework. Q2 : I realy think that I missed something and that must be a way of providing a simple yaml conf file. Do you have any examples of such an usage ? 3 Variables substitution in XML file Q3 : The Yaml configuration system seems to provide such a feature however I was unable to find a similar feature with XML files. Any ideas ? 4 Alternatives ? I must say that I'm very disappointed by the feature level and the maturity of log4r compared to the log4j and other log4j ports. I run into this framework with a solid background of logging APIs in other languages and find myself working around in all kinds just to make 'basic things' running in a “real world application”. By that I mean a complex application composed of several gems, console/scripting apps, and a rails web front end where the configuration must be mutualized and where we make intensive usage of namespaces and inheritance. I've run several searches in order to find something more suitable or mature, but did not find anything similar. • How do I remove the namespaces in Zend_Soap?

  Hi There I am trying to use the tranlsation webservice from MyMemory: http://mymemory.translated.net/doc/spec.php Unfortunately, Zend_Soap_Client does generate an XML reqest object that is not recognized by the service. I guess it is because of the ns1-Attribute (Namespace) within the tags. So does anyone know how to remove them? I have installed cygwin in windows and want to configure ssh, to remotely connect to my laptop. • NSObjectController confusion binding to a class property. Help!

  Hi, I'm teaching myself cocoa and enjoying the experience most of the time. I have been struggling all day with a simple problem that google has let me down on. I have read the Cocoa Bindings Program Topics and think I grok it but still can't solve my issue. I have a very simple class called MTSong that has various properties. I have used @synthesize to create getter/setters and can use KVC to change properties. i.e in my app controller the following works: mySong = [[MTSong alloc]init]; [mySong setValue:@"2" forKey:@"version"]; In case I am doing something noddy in my class code MTSong.h is: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface MTSong : NSObject { NSNumber *version; NSString *name; } @property(readwrite, assign) NSNumber *version; @property(readwrite, assign) NSString *name; @end and MTSong.m is: #import "MTSong.h" @implementation MTSong - (id)init { [super init]; return self; } - (void)dealloc { [super dealloc]; } @synthesize version; @synthesize name; @end In Interface Builder I have a label (NSTextField) that I want to update whenever I use KVC to change the version of the song. I do the following: Drag NSObjectController object into the doc window and in the Inspector-Attributes I set: Mode: Class Class Name: MTSong Add a key called version and another called name Go to Inspector-Bindings-Controller Content Bind To: File's Owner (Not sure this is right...) Model Key Path: version Select the cell of the label and go to Inspector Bind to: Object Controller Controller Key: mySong Model Key Path: version I have attempted changing the Model Key Path in step 2 to "mySong" which makes more sense but the compiler complains. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.   I am attempting to set up NCover for usage in my FinalBuilder project, for a .NET 4.0 C# project, but my final coverage output file contains no coverage data. I am using: NCover 3.3.2 NUnit 2.5.4 FinalBuilder 6.3.0.2004 All tools are the latest official as of today. I've finally managed to coax FB into running my unit tests under NCover for the .NET 4.0 project, so I get Tests run: 184, ..., which is correct.   I am trying append some XML retrieved via a dojo.XHRGet to a dijit.layout.ContentPane. Everything works ok in Firefox (3.6) but in Chrome, I only get back 'undefined' in the particular ContentPane. Is there a better way to handle the return data from the request? What does running Word on server implies? In order to get the Word example running, do the following on the server side. Worked for me... 1. Click START--RUN and enter "dcomcnfg" 2. In the "Applications" tab, go down to "Microsoft Word Document" 3. Click PROPERTIES button 4. Go to the "Security" Tab 5. Click "Use custom access permissions", and then click EDIT 6. Click ADD and then click SHOW USERS 7. Highlight the IIS anonymous user account (usually IUSR_), click ADD 8. Go back to the "Security" tab by hitting OK 9. Click "Use custom launch permissions", and the click EDIT 10. Click ADD and then click SHOW USERS 11. Highlight the IIS anonymous user account (usually IUSR_), click ADD 12. Hit OK, and then hit APPLY. Also, you should look at the "Identity" tab in the Microsoft Word Document PROPERTIES and see that it is set to "Interactive User" ALSO, log into the machine AS the IUSR_ account, start word, and make sure to click through the dialog boxes that Word shows the first time it is run for a certain user.
