• Using only alphanumeric characters(a-z) inside toCharArray

  Below you will find me using toCharArray in order to send a string to array. I then MOVE the value of the letter using a for statement... for(i = 0; i < letter.length; i++){ letter[i] += (shiftCode); System.out.print(letter[i]); } However, when I use shiftCode to move the value such as... a shifted by -1; I get a symbol @. Is there a way to send the string to shiftCode or tell shiftCode to ONLY use letters? I need it to see my text, like "aaron", and when I use the for statement iterate through a-z only and ignore all symbols and numbers. I THINK it is as simple as... letter=codeWord.toCharArray(a,z); But trying different forms of that and googling it didn't give me any results. Perhaps it has to do with regex or something? Below you will find a complete copy of my program; it works exactly how I want it to do; but it iterates through letters and symbols. I also tried finding instructions online for toCharArray but if there exists any arguments I can't locate them. • How do I pass objects through a _url based on a routing in rails?

  I want to pass the attributes associated with two objects into a path created from a route. In this case, the _url is skip_contact_letter_url. contact_letter and letter are passed through a render partial. • Can and should UDF be used as a hard drive format?

  Several time recently I've seen UDF suggested as the solution to a cross platform format for a drive used on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows XP and above. I've searched here and not found the same suggestion (most are suggesting ntfs-3g which seems to cost money and isn't preinstalled on a Mac). So my question is: how is this done right, and has anyone done this? Have you then filled up the drive and deleted some files to make space finding that everything works like a real r/w format even though it seems to have been primarily a write once format?

• Launch a real install of Ubuntu already on another hard-drive in Windows 7 like a VM

  I'm not too familiar with VMs and the like so this may not even be possible. Here is what I have: A real, full install of Windows 7 on hard drive A. A real, full install of Ubuntu 10.04 on hard drive B. Grub allowing me to select what I want to launch when I start up my computer. It would be Amazing if I could do one of two things. Within Windows 7, launch my real install of ubuntu as if it were a VM. That means i would get all the installed software, all of the files, and all of the settings. Launch a VM copy of ubuntu 10.04 but some how make it use all of the installed software and settings from my real copy. Thanks!

• Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

  I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.

  when I first downloaded Ubuntu to install it, it downloaded quick and caused no problems to my laptop. but then when it came time to install it as one of my operating systems, it wouldn't run because it said a file was missing or damaged. so then I uninstalled it and re-installed it but I still had that same problem. so I tried a flash-drive version but that didn't work either because it wouldn't boot from that, nor would it detect my flash drive, (in this case, an old 4 GB mp3 player). any help or tips and ideas would be great, I just need a decent operating system because windows is getting to be terrible at the moment, just note I wanna run Ubuntu along side windows 8.1

• Ubuntu installer thinks my drive is empty, does not see windows paritions.

  Hello, I am trying to install Ubuntu10.10 64bit. I just installed Windows 7 64bit moments ago. My drive is currently partitioned like so: 100MB Boot partition (automatically made by windows 7 installer) 390GB Windows partition ~1.6TB free space When I go through the Ubuntu installer it does not give me the option to install alongside another operating system. My only options are to use the entire disk or to specify partitions manually. When I chose to specify partitions manually it tells me that the drive is all free space! Windows is still booting and behaving normally, and I had not doing anything in Windows yet (had simply installed, booted for first time, then immediately restarted). I am even able to mount the windows partition within Ubuntu Live CD, and see it in the disk viewer (not gparted). Gparted in Ubuntu Live CD again reports no partitions, all free space. Not sure what to do :S. I have installed Windows7 alongside Ubuntu countless times, even Ubuntu 10.10. Thank you very much for your help :).

• Why won't USB 3.0 external hard drive run at USB 3.0 speeds?

  I recently purchased a PCI Express x1 USB 3.0 controller card (containing the NEC USB 3.0 controller) with the intent of using a USB 3.0 external hard drive with my Linux box. I installed the card in an empty PCIe slot on my motherboard, connected the card to a power cable, strung a USB 3.0 cable between one of the new ports and my external HDD, and connected the HDD to a wall socket for power. Booting the system, the drive works 100% as intended, with the one exception of throughput: rather than using SuperSpeed 4.8 Gbps connectivity, it seems to be falling back to High Speed 480 Mbps USB 2.0-style throughput. Disk Utility shows it as a 480 Mbps device, and running a couple Disk Utility and dd benchmarks confirms that the drive fails to exceed ~40 MB/s (the approximate limit of USB 2.0), despite it being an SSD capable of far more than that. Consequently, I installed the 2.6.37-generic mainline Ubuntu kernel to determine if the problem would go away. It didn't, so I tried 2.6.38-rc3-generic, and even the 2.6.38 nightly from 2010.02.01, to no avail. In short, I'm trying to determine why, with USB 3.0 support in the kernel, my USB 3.0 drive fails to run at full SuperSpeed throughput. See the comments under this question for additional details. • Have I lost my entire Windows drive and all the files?

  I previously had Heron 8.04 installed. Today I decided to upgrade. During the partition phase of the install of 10.10 it asked me what portion of the drive I should use. There were a few options: Drag the partition size to indicate what I wanted to use A button that said use entire partition A button that said use entire drive I selected use entire partition as the Windows partition did not appear on the screen I assumed this was just displaying the existing Ubuntu partition. After install I think I have wiped my entire Windows partition, I can't see it anywhere. I would appreciate some advice as to find if it really is gone forever (My stupidity I didn't back up my Windows partition which includes 3 years of baby photos).

• How to build a dynamic grub on a usb-drive?

  I would like to setup GRUB on a USB where it detects automatically the available OS installations on the machine that it is plugged into. This could be useful if you messed up your default GRUB menu on a computer and would like to boot into the machine w/out booting Live-OS. Or if you have multiple Live-OS installations on a USB-Drive and would like to add/remove different installations w/out needing to update grub manually. I know that Grub2 has a OS-prober feature that looks for other installations on the hard-drive, but will that work in either of the scenarios listed above?

• Hardware question; booting ubuntu off of USB flash drive?

  I'm currently running ubuntu off of a USB 3.0 flash drive on my laptop, and I have another USB 3.0 flash drive I use for storing larger files that I need to access and whatnot. But the issue is that both of the usb 3.0 flash drives don't fit next to each other at all, so I'm forced to use another usb 2.0 port located in a different spot on my laptop. Now my question is that if I use a USB 3.0 hub will that slow my connections down at all? or cause some sort of interference? Another question I had which I was unable to find anywhere on the internet is if there was a USB 3.0 hub with more than one upstream connection? Thanks for your time!

• Recommended Linux distro to boot into RAM (from USB flash drive)?

  I don't mind if I use USB flash drive or CD-ROM, but I would prefer USB flash drive. I had a squizz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM On my own computer, I would be able to use any of the distros in the list. The largest "RAM required" in the list is 4GB. I would like to be able to use it on any computer, so I suppose 1GB or less would be better. I tried to follow the method described on Distro that I can load into RAM? but the distro listed there, from Israel Remix Team, doesn't seem to be available. Before I start trial-and-error on different distros, does anyone have any recommendations?

• When I boot it says "No any drive found" and turns off after upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04

  I did an upgrade on the weekend from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (karmic to lucid). Now, when I restart my computer, it goes through the regular load screen showing my P5K Asus motherboard, just like before but instead of showing the Ubuntu load screen, it tries to start grub but fails and then says "No any drive found" and the screen goes black. I've tried changing the drive configuration in the BIOS to AHCI or RAID and that didn't work. I've tried disabling JMICRON but to no avail. I'm running out of options here. Any advice?

  I reinstalled windows on the laptop of my daughter. Before doing this we made a copy of her music, pictures and so on. Unfortunately, the folder we created for the backup was empty (I checked after I reinstalled windows). Today a miracle happened, as suddenly the data were back but when Itried to copy them to another place thez disappeared again. Checking the drive with disk utility I got the message "filesystem is not clean". Is there a way to recover the data? Preferred solution would be a tool with a gui. The drive I need to repair is formatted in NTFS and is connected via usb to laptop.

  My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)? • Unable to delete duplicate pagefile.sys

  I have one SQL server that contain two drives on it and both drives are on SAN. C drive contains OS and V drive Contain pagefile.sys file. I rebooted my server and both drives was unmapped on SQL server. Some How one drive came (the OS drive) and created pagefile.sys on C drive and then I rebooted my server remapped the v drive. Now I have two pagefile.sys on C and V drive. But under Advance setting only V drive option is checked as pagefile. How do delete duplicate pagefile on C drive. It showing me that " the program is being used" while deleting the pagefile

• Unable to read USB External HD after aborted back up

  I have two PC laptops. On one of the two PC's (Win 7) I Aborted a back up and ejected the drive. Now that same pc wants to format the drive. I plugged the drive into the other pc (Win XP) and that one reads the drive and all data stored. Why does one want to format the drive and the other does not? .... My apologies for not being clearer with my original question and thanks for the responses, so; The drive is not a flash stick, its an external WD Hard drive plugged in via the USB. The two tips provided did not resolve the issue. Strangely, the pc with win XP can read the drive but the pc that the HD was plugged into when the backup was aborted still wants to format the drive. • Flex/PHP/XML data issue

  I have built a simple application in Flex. When the application loads, a GET request is made to the xmlService.php file with parameters "fetchData=letters". This tells the PHP to return the XML code. In Flex Debug I can see the XML data being sent by the PHP to the flex client. What I need it to do is populate the first drop down box (id="letter") with this data, however nothing is being received by Flex. I added an Alert.show() to check what was being returned but when the application runs, the alert is blank. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
