• Is it possible to creating a Service without starting it?

  Hello all, I wonder, is it possible to create a Service, set some data, and then start it? I haven't come across a thread specific to this problem, so I would like to know if it is possible (if it is known of course). My problem is that I have a Service which listens to a DatagramSocket, but the socket in question needs to be set after creation, but before the start of the Service. The setting of the socket happens through the use of a Broadcast (I broadcast 2 Strings which hold the IP-Address & Port and the BroadcastReceiver then constructs a socket for me). When the Service is started, a Thread will start to run and listen to the supposedly created socket. This, sadly, doesn't happen. The socket will remain null and I can't set it when the Thread is running (This is another issue I hope to tackle in the future, if anybody got any ideas about this, please notify me). So, is what I want possible, or should I come up with another construct for achieving this goal?

• SVN always getting errors when I commit (Subclipse)

  I have setup svn on my server and Subclipse at home. I am the only developer and am mainly using it for the backup and versioning features. Everytime I commit my changes I get eighter: Out Of date errors or Tree conflicts Sometimes I even delete files and they don't delete on svn, in a directory hierarchy only the very last item will delete so I have to delete each folder one at a time. How do I avoid these errors in the future? Update: Another problem I am having is that sometimes eclipse seems to sync with the server so that when I refactor a filename it goes off to the server and does something and makes me wait, which is annoying. And for clarity, this is a typical operation: I might change a filename, move a file to a different folder then change the contents of a file. I select the 'Team menu' and click 'commit'. Then I get all these errors above.

• Converting a Matrix to a grid of colors

  I'm currently making a console application in C# (will be going to a Windows Form application in the future. Sooner if needed). My current objective is to have a matrix (current size 52x42) be exported as an image (bitmap, jpeg, png, I'm flexible) where each value in the matrix (0, 1, 2, 3) is portrayed as a white, black, blue, or red square of size 20px x 20px with a grid 1px wide seperating each 'cell'. Can this even be done in a console application, and if so how? If not, what would I need to get it working in a Windows Form application?

• Can I learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by September?

  Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by the end of this summer. The app shouldn't be too difficult, it would just interact with my site's API and essentially just fetch, create, and edit resources. I already have a little experience with the SDK (and I'm comfortable with Objective-C), so I'm not completely new to it. Although here I things I don't know how to do and what I'd need to learn: Log in to my site using basic http authentication and store the user's username/password for all future requests Implement a toolbar at the bottom to navigate between different views Fetch and parse xml into list items Do POST/PUT requests to create/edit a resource on my server Are there any good resources available to learn how to do those tasks above?   I have a voting script which stores the post_id and the user_id in a table, to determine whether a particular user has already voted on a post and disallow them in the future. To do that, I am doing the following 3 queries. SELECT user_id, post_id from votes_table where postid=? AND user_id=? If that returns no rows, then: UPDATE post_table set votecount = votecount-1 where post_id = ? Then SELECT votecount from post where post_id=? To display the new votecount on the web page Any better way to do this? 3 queries are seriously slowing down the user's voting experience

  Hi, I'm working on a quite big magento: it will have 50 different shops (1 magento install, 1 admin to rule them all) for start, this number is expected to raise in the future, and a catalog of more than 1k products. This catalog will be shared by all shops. I'm concerned about the server requirements I need for this to run smoothly. So far this is what I've found to get the most of it: Caching: using magento's cache with APC, MySQL's querys Images sprite in the theme use FastCGI instead of mod_php database clustering: I don't think it will be necesary for 1k products, what do you think? using Zend Server Are there other thing I can do in order to improve magento's performance?   Hi guys, hopefully you can help me here. I have some code (please see below) which takes the current time, then adds specific seconds to the time and re-displays the time 1 minute in the future. Instead of the time being the current time, I want it to be a time which I set - say 9:30. Then I want to be able to add, for example 65 seconds and it shows me 9:31. Please can you show me how to change it from current time, to a specific time I can set myself.   Ive seen Qt GUI syntax like the following all over the place: myDialog::myDialog(QWidget *parent, Qt::WFlags flags):QDialog(parent, flags) { QPushButton *button = new QPushButton("&Download", this); QVBoxLayout *layout = new QVBoxLayout(this); //something that can throw here layout ->addWidget(button ); setLayout(layout); } I've always wondered if this can leak in the event of an exception because the "this" I'm giving as a parent to button and layout is not fully constructed so it might not destroy its children. I tried it out in MSVC2010 Qt4.8.3 and it looks like as soon as the base QObject class is fully created (which is done first of course) it is ok to pass "this" to other objects in the constructor, they will destroyed correctly. I haven't found the spot in the Qt docs guaranteeing this though, can someone point me to it so I have assurance that this will not change in the future?

  How awful is it - or is it perfectly acceptable - to index a loop on an enumeration? I have an enumeration defined. The values of the literals are default values. The assigned values do not have any significance, will not have any significance, and the values of any literals added in the future will also not have any significance. It's just defined to limit the allowed values and to make things easier to follow. Therefore the values will always start at 0 and increase by 1. Can I set up a loop like so: enum MyEnum { value1, value2, value3, maxValue } for(MyEnum i = value1; i < maxValue; i = static_cast<MyEnum>(i+1)){}

• Analog of Java Form Layout in Qt

  Once I have programmed GUI with Java and have used Form Layouts. Form layout (if I am not mistaken that is from SWT library) made possible to give right, left, top and bottom adges of any GUI element (widget) with respect to other widgets in the same widget (parent widget) or with respect to the adges of parent widget. So it was possible to control the future of widgets that are inside of another one, when that "another widget" is being resized. In Qt I have find the QFormLayout which is similar to Java one, but seems I can't handle with widgets as flexible in terms of relative positioning, as it was with Java's Form Layout. So are there any other means to give a widget position with respect to the others (without overloading resizeEvent function) as that was in Java? Thanks.

  I'm trying to understand the factory design pattern. I don't understand why it's good to have a middleman between the client and the product (object that the client wants). example with no factory: $mac = new Mac(); example with a factory: $appleStore = new AppleStore(); $mac = $appleStore->getProduct('mac'); How does the factory pattern decouple the client from the product? Could someone give an example of a future code change that will impact on example 1 negative, but positive in example 2 so I understand the importance of decoupling? Thanks.

  I know this question was here a lot of times and can't be answered at all, but im not looking for a single name, but rather for an advice in my situation. I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business? I know there is no single answer, but I'm sure you could mention some languages that are more usefull than others.

• Is there a way to pass a regex capture to a block in Ruby?

  I have a hash with a regex for the key and a block for the value. Something like the following: { 'test (.+?)' => { puts $1 } } Not exactly like that, obviously, since the block is being stored as a Proc, but that's the idea. I then have a regex match later on that looks a lot like this hash.each do |pattern, action| if /#{pattern}/i.match(string) action.call end end The idea was to store the block away in the hash to make it a bit easier for me to expand upon in the future, but now the regex capture doesn't get passed to the block. Is there a way to do this cleanly that would support any number of captures I put in the regex (as in, some regex patterns may have 1 capture, others may have 3)?

  I have a very big table with a lot of rows, every row has stats for every user for certain days. And obviously I don't have any stats for future. So to update the stats I use UPDATE Stats SET Visits=@val WHERE ... a lot of conditions ... AND Date=@Today But what if the row doesn't exist? I'd have to use INSERT INTO Stats (...) VALUES (Visits=@val, ..., Date=@Today) How can I check if the row exists or not? Is there any way different from doing the COUNT(*)? If I fill the table with empty cells, it'd take hundreds of thousands of rows taking megabytes and storing no data.

• Is it acceptable to design my GLSurfaceView as a main control class?

  I'm trying to structure a game I'm making in Android so that I have a sound, flexible design. Right now I'm looking at where I can tie my games rules engine and graphics engine together and what should be in between them. At a glance, I've been eying my implementation of GLSurfaceView, where various screen events are captured. My rationale would be to create an instance of my game engine and graphics engine here and receive events and state changes to trigger updates of either where applicable. Further to this, in the future, the GLSurfaceView implementation could also store stubs for players during a network game and implementations of computer opponents and dispatch them appropriately. Does this seem like a sensible design? Are there any kinds of improvements I can make? Thanks for any input!

• JUnit Theories: Why can't I use Lists (instead of arrays) as DataPoints?

  I've started using the new(ish) JUnit Theories feature for parameterizing tests. If your Theory is set up to take, for example, an Integer argument, the Theories test runner picks up any Integers marked with @DataPoint: @DataPoint public static Integer number = 0; as well as any Integers in arrays: @DataPoints public static Integer[] numbers = {1, 2, 3}; or even methods that return arrays like: @DataPoints public static Integer[] moreNumbers() { return new Integer[] {4, 5, 6};}; but not in Lists. The following does not work: @DataPoints public static List<Integer> numberList = Arrays.asList(7, 8, 9); Am I doing something wrong, or do Lists really not work? Was it a conscious design choice not to allow the use Lists as data points, or is that just a feature that hasn't been implemented yet? Are there plans to implement it in a future version of JUnit?

  Hi all, On a Salesforce.com opportunity I have a number of custom fields that are potential options that the end client will eventually select. Option 1 (Desc Field) Option 1 (Value) Option 2 (Desc Field) Option 2 (Value) Option 3 (Desc Field) Option 3 (Value) At a future point the user will ultimately choose one of the options as the preferred option. What I want is then the value for the chosen option to be stored in another field without the user having to enter it again.   Hello all! I'm planning to develop a web app where users will list their site/blog. When people submit their sites, how can I confirm that they are the owners of it? So for instance there is a user Mark who wants to submit someone else's website without their approval. I want to restrict Mark from doing so unless he is the actual owner. My idea was to do a comparison between the user's email domain and the website domain she/he wants to submit. If they match allow the user to submit the website. However most people don't register with their website domain address.. or perhaps I'll implement a Facebook connect in the future. What other methods would you suggest?

• Need a field / flag / status number for mutliple use ?

  I want to create a field in my database which will be easy to query. I think if I give a bit of background this will make more sense. My table has listings shown on my website. I run a program which looks at the listings a decides whether to hide them from being shown on the site. I also hide listings manually for various reasons. I want to store these reasons in a field, so more than one reason could be made for hiding. So I need some form of logic to determine which reasons have been used. Can anyone offer me any guidance on what will be future-proof aka new reasons and what will be quick and easy to query upon ?

  I'm looking for a way to easily read in a C# file and place it into a Java Object for database storage (storing the class name, functions, variables, etc). I'm making a Hierarchical State Machine AI Building Tool for a game I'm creating and need to be able to import an existing C# file and store it in a database for retrieval in the future.   The Rules: An employee accrues 8 hours of Paid Time Off on the day after each quarter. Quarters, specifically being: Jan 1 - Mar 31 Apr 1 - Jun 30 Jul 1 - Sep 30 Oct 1 - Dec 31 The Problem Employees will use an automated system to request paid time off, possibly occurring in the past, as well as the future. Requests should only be accepted if the employee has (or will have) that time available. For instance, if an employee only has 1 Day of Paid Time Off currently available (currently being January 20th), but is requesting 2 Days of Paid Time Off, beginning September 20th, the system should take into account that the employee would have accrued enough time off by then and allow the request. (Obviously ignoring that the employee may use up existing time before that date). I'm currently using Python, and wondering what the correct approach to something like this would be. I'm assuming that using DateTime objects, and possibly the dateutil module, would help here, but my brain isn't wrapping around this problem for some reason.
