• Where is the best place to start projects and attract developers?

  I want to develop software for Linux or cross-platform. I want to work with other open-source and non-profit developers. I want a place where Ubuntu or other developers come to start open-source or commercial projects, and we can join the projects or start our own projects. I know there are social coding sites, but where can I start the project, and invite people or let people join? Then we can submit software to sourceforge.net. I know we can start projects at sourceforge.net, but is there anything more dedicated for Ubuntu developers, especially for Ubuntu and for the Ubuntu Software Center? Would you recommend Launchpad, sourceforge.net, github, gitorous or others?

• How do I get the name of a package, modify and install it?

  I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux, but I'm a programmer, and some people told me that you can just go ahead and modify your system. So my question is, how do you go on about that? For instance, If I'm interested in modifying the behavior of the button or the desktop icons, or whatever it is: How do I get the source code? I guess I need the package name and download it. But how can I get the package name? Let's say I want the button package, where do I look to get the package name? is there a list on a website or a help file? Once I modify it, how can I replace the original with the new one? P.S. I had some troubles finding the right tags, feel free to edit them

• AJAX spreadsheet editor interfaced to own website

  My website has records that are tables. I would like for my users to be able to edit these records in an easy way. Currently they download a .csv-file, edit it in their favourite spreadsheet, and upload it again. But this often fails (they upload in wrong format or edit fields that they are not supposed to touch). I would therefore like to present the users with an editor directly on the website. So just like you can have WYSIWYG editors in CMSes for text I would like to have it for spreadsheets. One solution would be to interface my website with GoogleDoc and have the users edit the files using GoogleDoc's spreadsheet, and some how get the sheet back when they are done, but I do not know if this is possible at all.

I'm looking for the right sort of role and the right place to look for it; I would really appreciate input from someone with industry experience. I've got an excellent academic record: BSc Physics (2:1), MSc Computer Graphics, Vision and Imaging (expecting Merit) from two world ranking universities. I have advanced technical knowledge of C/C++ and Matlab and experience working with C# and VB.NET. Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of commercial experience; unlike a lot of people I know my under-graduate didn't come with a sandwich placement. Where can I go to break into the software industry?

• Reliance on the compiler

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being expert. For some time I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC I typed in long listings before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learnt to write a small bit and then test it. These days I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this ? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

• Implementing scrolling buttons in android

  I want to create an Android app in which the buttons scroll up or down the screen, kind of like a "wheel", so that when the "last" button is reached, it is simply followed seamlessly by the first one. I would want it to look something like the Price Is Right wheel. (This video at 0:12.) I want the first round of buttons to be presented for the user to tap the screen and make his choice, which would lead to a second round of buttons based on the first choice, and a third round based on the second choice. I've done a number of different google searches, but nothing so far. Any ideas?

• Why does GtkCalendar counts months from 0?

  So I spent several hours in rage, figuring out why isn't my code writing to the /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm correctly. The problem is that it doesn't return anything if the value is wrong. And finally I noticed this small 5 between the year and the day. Why isn't it counting days and years from zero for consistency? For comparison: QCalendarWidget counts month from 1 to 12 (docs) So GtkCalendar... F**k You!

  While creating an Image Slider, cross-fade is one of most popular effects so far. Various slider on the internet use various techniques to create such effect. Major technique I have found so far are two: Some use a overlay and underlay div and fade in and out each others visibility. While others, create a div of exact size of the slider on the slider-initialization and play with its z-index property and then fade each other consequently. Disregarding them, what is a proper way or much better way to create a cross fade effect. P.S: I would love to read answer in form of algorithm.

I know that I won't win with such an app but it's a nice possibility to get into Qickly and Ubuntu Apps since I'm only programming for Windows at the moment. • secure offline PC storage accessible through javascript

  I'm attempting to build a browser-based HTML5 application that has the ability to store data locally on a PC (not mobile device) when offline. This data is sensitive and must be secure. Of course the trick is trying to find a way to be able to access the secure data with Javascript. I've ruled out browser local storage since its not secure. Could this be accomplished with a local database? If so, where could the DB credentials be stored? Javascript obviously doesn't seem like a good option to store them since its user-readable.

Go to the sign-in page: Sign In Log in with your normal password but instead use the following email address: myemailadd%[email protected] You will then be given the option to switch your Engage member profile to: [email protected].   right now I'm going to develop a simple AI for some units for the board game warhammer fantasy. With some simple rules, I've read some things such as http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/21519/complex-game-ai-for-turn-based-strategy-games . I have the robots to move the pieces, the map is just simple(no hills,buildings..) and I need to start to give an AI for the robot to move the pieces. Problem is I have been searching for a long time and can't really find someone that has done something similar with warhammer, and I don't really know where to begin with or which tools I need to use. I would be glad if someone can give me some headsup on how to begin with, or if any programming language is better, not to mention if there is something similar where I could ask for help.

  I really expect someone to help me with my problem as stated below. I started learning website making by having tutorials from w3schools.com but after doing taking the HTML tutorials I don't think I really can do anything with it. Maybe I don't know everything about HTML yet. I know the online tutorials are not enough but what I need you guys to tell me is that how can I learn making some nice websites. I have vacations for two months now and I think it would be the best time for me to learn making websites as I really love to be a website developer. Now I would like to start from the scratch. I know some C language (though I know it will not help me). So tell me from where shall I learn HTML and what all things shall I learn after that and in what order. If you can also help me with the material (let it be books or online tutorials). But I would like to know how can I gain confidence that I can make some websites as just learning online tutorials doesn't help me much. I also tried some video tutorials but in that too, they will just tell me some of the functions and not all. So what am I supposed to do.. just know a limited functions as they want me to know in video tutorials or do something else.

  I am finishing up my bachelor's degree in computer science and am feeling somewhat burnt out in the field. I enjoy solving problems, programming, and using computers to find said solutions, but I feel that I never really concentrated on anything in particular and so I don't have any specialties or a path in technology to follow. I feel like a 'generic programmer' with nothing special to offer. My question is, where can I look to find this niche? I have interest in the environment, nature, sustainability, and other similar things. Is there something in these areas in particular where specialists are needed? I think only in gaming industry that they would hire a c++ programmer and has an 3 or more years of xp. • In-memory DB to perform intersects on set slices

  I have a specific programming need where I need to efficiently store large sorted sets in memory, query them for ranges, and intersect them against other sets that are also queried for ranged. I am looking at Redis, but I can't see a range slice command. MongoDB can only use 1 index, so it has to perform row-level scans, whereas I wish to process using columns that are intersected. I'm also looking at Counchbase, but can't easily determine from the documentation if it is suited to this. I know it uses Memcached, which is AFAIK not suited to this usage. Could anyone share potential solutions for this specific problem? EDIT For example, I need to perform the following: Get the IDs of all cars where the price is between 2000 and 3000, and intersect that will all cars where the engine capacity is between 3000 and 4000.

I've gotten two interviews since that went up to the technical phone interview and then they were no longer interested. One of the recruiters mentioned to me that they thought my fundamentals weren't strong enough. What do I need to brush up on in order to get past the technical phone interview. My language of most experience is C#. I know Object Oriented Programming. I know what the difference between an interface and an abstract class is. • C++ developer looks for book(s) about Android apps & widgets (& services etc.) [on hold]

  I'm senior C++ developer, I have also programmed professionally j2me some years. I'd like to make some apps and widgets for Android and I'd like to read up a bit on this new java stuff Android is using. I have (of course) checked out some tutorials and so but it seems I miss the basics, I can compile some stuff (read: examples) in eclipse but I just don't know how to, for example, add a service or what an 'intent' is, why my widget isn't called but successfully launches the main app when clicked and so on. So, what is a really good book for someone that is a developer but mostly need the hard facts about developing something specific like Android apps & widgets? Thanks a bunch!
