  • Need advice or pointers on Release Management Strategies

    I look after an internal web based (Java, JSP, Mediasurface, etc.) system that is in constant use (24/5). Users raise tickets for enhancements, bug fixes and other business changes. These issues are signed off individually and assigned to one of three or four developers. Once the issue is complete it is built and the code only committed to SVN. The changed files (templates, html, classes, jsp) are then copied to a dev server and committed to a different repository from where they are checked out to the UAT server for testing. (this often requires the Tomcat service to be restarted and occasionally the Mediasurface service as well). The users then test and either reject or approve the release. If approved the edited files are checked out to the Live server and the same process as with UAT undertaken. If rejected the developer makes the relevant changes and starts the release process again. This is all done manually without much control. Where different developers are working on similar files, changes sometimes get overwritten by builds done on out of sync code in other cases changes in UAT are moved to live in error as they are mixed up in files associated with a signed off release. I would like to move this to a more controlled and automated process where all source code and output files are held in SVN and releases to Dev, UAT and Live managed by a CI system (We have TeamCity in house for our .NET applications). My question is on how to manage the releases of multiple changes where some will be signed off and moved on and others rejected and returned to the developer. The changes may be on overlapping files and simply merging each release in to a Release Branch means that the rejected changes would have to be backed out of the branch. Is there a way to manage this using SVN and CI or will I simply have to live with the current system.

    I am needing to parse an XML file for my app and I dont have any clue how to do it. Or if I'm going about this the wrong way I'd be open to suggestions too. (the XML file is about 8MB)

  • WCF: Per-Call and Per-Session services...need convincing that Per-Call is worthwhile

    Hello all. We are currently doing a review of our WCF service design and one thing that is bothering me is the decision between Per-Call and Per-Session services. I believe I understand the concept behind both, but I am not really seeing the advantage of Per-Call services. I understand that the motivation for using Per-Call services is that a WCF services only holds a servier object for the life of a call thereby restricting the time that an expensive resource is held by the service instance, but to me its much simpler to use the more OO like Per-Session model where your proxy object instance always corrisponds to the same server object instance and just handle any expensive resources manually. For example, say I have a CRUD Service with Add, Update, Delete, Select methods on it. This could be done as a Per-Call service with database connection (the "expensive resource") instanciated in the server object constructor. Alternately it could be a Per-Session service with a database connection instanciated and closed within each CRUD method exposed. To me it is no different resource wise and it makes the programming model simpler as the client can be assured that they always have the same server object for their proxies: any in-expensive state that there may be between calls is maintained and no extra parameters are needed on methods to identify what state data must be retrieved by the service when it is instanciating a new server object again (as in the case of Per-Call). Its just like using classes and objects, where the same resource management issues apply, but we dont create new object instances for each method call we have on an object! So what am I missing with the Per-Call model? Thanks

I'd like to do something like this to the resulting list //nhibernate query IList<MedicalDays> days = daysDao.FindAll(searchCritCollection); //select a list of days from resulting list IEnumerable<MedicalDays> queriedList = days.SelectMany(i => i.MedicalRequest.MedicalUser == employee); Linq tells me that the type cannot be inferred by the usage. I deleted all of the content of the "#content" div and added my own content... the problem is that since its not as long as the original content the header comes up and is now on top of the sidebars....how can I make the header stay on the bottom of the page?? Also the lists(ListA or ListB) can take at max of 100 elements. 4. ListC can contain elements of generic type C and can take max of 100 elements For ex: Now, If i have 200 elements of type A and 200 elements of type B and 600 elements of type C then i should be able to get 4 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListA (because each ListA can contain at max of 50 elements of type A only, rem 50 is typeC) 4 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListB (because each ListA can contain at max of 50 elements of type B only, rem 50 is typeC) 2 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListC i shall be glad to explain it again if my explanation is quite confusing.     My html email newsletter design doesn't render properly in Outlook 2007. There is a white horizontal gap towards the bottom which breaks borders and backgrounds. I've had this happen before and have no idea how to work around it. Any suggestions? I've posted the source here. It renders just fine except in Outlook 2007 (Word 2007). By the way, you can preview the problem without Outlook, by opening the source with Word 2007.
