• Rails and PostgreSQL: Role postgres does not exist

  I have installed postgresql on my Mac OS Lion, and am working on a rails app. I use RVM to keep everything separate from my other rails apps. For some reason when I try to migrate the db for the first time rake cannot find the postgres user. I get the error FATAL: role "postgres" does not exist I have pgAdmin 3 so I can clearly see there is a postgres user in the DB - the admin account in fact - so I'm not sure what else to do. I read somewhere about people having issues with postgresql because of which path it was installed in, but then i don't think i would have gotten that far if it couldn't find the db. Any clues would be gratefully received! Thanks, Adam

  Hi all, I got an array in my app and I need to order by one of its key. Basically what the app does is taking latitude and longitude somewhere, calculate the distance from my actual position and create an array containing a key called "distance". I'm using myArray sortUsingDescriptors: [NSArray arrayWithObject:[[[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"distance" ascending:YES] autorelease]]]; I'm not sure it's working, I mean the first results are ordered but then it shows distance closer to the previous, as example: 0.8 km 1.6 km 1.9 km 10053.9 km 1098.0 km 2372.0 km 470.5 km Any suggestion? • How to read tags out of m4a files in .NET?

  I've got some heavily modified code that ultimately came from the Windows Media SDK that works great for reading tags out of MP3 and WMV files. Somewhere along the line, Windows Media Player added support for .m4a files (was it in Windows 7?) but the Windows Media API doesn't seem to reflect that addition (or at least IWMMetadataEditor2::OpenEx pukes on an .m4a file). What would be some good C# code or links on how to dig meta data tags out of m4a files? (Google has come up dry on the C# front.) UPDATE AtomicParsley did indeed end being the best approach. Since that code is a command line tool however I ended up having to create a managed wrapper around some of its functionality in order to use in-process. It is posted on google code if anyone else needs such a thing.

• Storing a file in the user's directory in cross-platform Java

  I have a Java application that runs on Mac and Windows, directly off a CD/DVD with no installation. Now, I need to store a file containing per-user data (think favourites etc.) somewhere on the local file system, so that it can be written to. So, where do you think is a good location for this file? I am thinking something like: <USER_DOCUMENTS_AND_SETTINGS>/application data/myapp/favourites.db for windows <USER_HOME_DIR>/.myapp/favourites.db for mac/nix Thoughts? And does anyone know the best way to determine these paths within Java?

• Under what circumstances does Groovy use AbstractConcurrentMap?

  (Specifically, org.codehaus.groovy.util.AbstractConcurrentMap) While doing some profiling of our application thats mixed Java/Groovy, I'm seeing a lot of references to the AbstractConcurrentMap class, none of which are explicit in the code base. Does groovy use this class when maps are instantiated in the groovy dynamic def myMap = [:] style? Are there rules somewhere about when groovy chooses to use this as opposed to, say, java.util.HashMap? And does anyone have any performance information comparing the two? My rough "eyeball check" says that AbstractConcurrentMap seems to be much slower - anyone know if I'm right?

• Where to put to_xls and from_xls in a rails app

  So I have a model that I need to be able to serialize to/read from an Excel(XLS) document. I am a bit of a loss as to where this code actually belongs. My initial thought is that the to_xls is a view, but after poking around and seeing things like (to|from)_xml and (to|from)_json in ActiveRecord, I was wondering if maybe this stuff belonged in the model. Alternatively, does it belong in just a whole separate container somewhere? For what it's worth, users will be downloading models from the site, modifying them in excel, then posting them.

• How do I list all non-system stored procedures?

  I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know? • Debugging maven junit tests with filtered resources?

  We are using filtered testResources in JUnit-tests that are usually executed by the maven surefire plugin. That is, the pom contains a section <build> <testResources> <testResource> <directory>src/test/resources</directory> <filtering>true</filtering> </testResource> </testResources> ... How can I run such JUnit-tests in the debugger? If I execute the tests in eclipse the tests fail since the test resources are not filtered. If the filtered test resources would be written somewhere into the target directory, I could just use this as an additional source path - but this is not the case. If I try to run the maven build in eclipse with Debug As / maven test , the build does not stop in the breakpoints. Any other ideas?

• Nokogiri Truncating XML Input

  I am having issues with a colleagues machine truncating XML while using Nokogiri to parse a Media RSS feed. The feed is a standard Media RSS feed, and the XML is not malformed. It looks like it simply stops at a certain point in the XML and closes any tags that would have been open at that current point in the document. (Unfortunately I do not have the XML avialable to me right now, but I will update this question with the actual XML when I have it available to me). My confusion comes from it working fine on my machine (OSX 10.6, Nokogiri 1.4.4) while it in correctly on his machine using the same setup - however his machine is a few years older. I imagine that there is a difference somewhere but unfortunately I don't know what to look for. Any thoughts or direction would be greatly appreciated.

• VS.NET solution built differently on build server

  I have a VS.NET solution with two Projects, ProjectWeb and ProjectLibrary. PW depends on PL, so I have a VS.NET project reference to PL in PW. That works all well and good on my dev box, but when it all gets to the build server, I have two different build projects, one for PL and one for PW. I'd like to build PL and copy the binaries somewhere. Then, I'd like to build PW and it only, using the binaries from the previous PL build. But will that work since the PW VS.NET project is referencing a project that doesn't exist when I build PW only on the build server? How can I set this up For specifics, I am using CC.NET and NAnt, but I have other projects that use Hudson and straight MS build

I created a bunch of editable UITableViewCell by embedding an UITextField inside, but I have seen some apps that allows you to scroll the UItableview by scrolling inside an inactive editable cell. How can I do that? And how can I also dismiss the keyboard when tapping somewhere else? I know about the method: - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch *touch = [[event allTouches] anyObject]; if (touch.tapCount == 1) { [self resignFirstResponder]; } else { }} I put it inside my custom table view controller but the method doesn't seem to be called upon a tap, and I don't know if even if it gets called will dismiss the keyboard. • Objective-C / C giving enums default values

  I read somewhere about giving enums default values like so: typedef enum { MarketNavigationTypeNone = 0, MarketNavigationTypeHeirachy = 1, MarketNavigationTypeMarket = 2 } MarketNavigationLevelType; .. but i can't remember the value of doing this. If i don't give them default values - and then someone later on reorders the enum - what are the risks? If i always use the enum name and don't even refer to them by their integer value, is there any risks? The only possible problem i can think of is if i'm initialising an enum from an int value from a DB - and the enum is reordered - then the app would break.

• mod_perl memory leak

  Hello, I recently discovered that one of our sites has a memory leak in it, it's very strange because it happened all of the sudden. I've used GTop to measure the memory size per process and it tells me that the real value is somewhere around 65 MB (on the server) per request and and additional 5 MB shared. I tried preloading the modules in the startup.pl file a indicated in the performance tuning article for mod_perl. Nothing happened if fact the shared memory decreased down to 3.7 MB, in this situation I thought that my application is leaking memory do before any line of code got executed I measured the memory just to find out that the total value is in fact 64 MB, my questions are: Is there a default preallocation of memory for each process? Is there a configuration issue? Is mod_perl leaking memory ? Thank you very much.

  Hi all. I have a rectangle in .NET in which I draw an ellipse. I know the width, height and center point of that rectangle. Ofcourse the cetner point of the rectangle is also the center point of the ellipse. I know how to calculate a point on a circle, however I have no clue about an ellipse. I have those parameters and an angle, i need the point on the ellipse, can someone post the formula? I saw somewhere you need to calculate 2 points in which 2 raduises will go, the sum of the radiuses will be fixed and they will change in size accordingly. I dont know how to do that, I only have the rectange height, width and center point and ofcourse the angle I wish to find the point at. thanks for any help Shlomi

  I am using the following tables in mysql to describe records that can have multiple searchtags associated with them: TABLE records ID title desc TABLE searchTags ID name TABLE recordSearchTags recordID searchTagID To SELECT records based on arbitrary search input, I have a statement that looks sort of like this: SELECT recordID FROM recordSearchTags LEFT JOIN searchTags ON recordSearchTags.searchTagID = searchTags.ID WHERE searchTags.name LIKE CONCAT('%','$search1','%') OR searchTags.name LIKE CONCAT('%','$search2','%') OR searchTags.name LIKE CONCAT('%','$search3','%') OR searchTags.name LIKE CONCAT('%','$search4','%'); I'd like to ORDER this resultset, so that rows that match with more search terms are displayed in front of rows that match with fewer search terms. For example, if a row matches all 4 search terms, it will be top of the list. A row that matches only 2 search terms will be somewhere in the middle. • Where should I store user config data? Specificaly the path to the data file?

  I have an app using a SQLite db, and I need the ability for the user to move the data file and point the app to where it moved to. I used the Entity Framework to create the model, and by default it puts the connection string in the App.Config file. From what I've read if I make changes to the connection string there then they won't take effect until the app is restarted. That seems a bit clunky for my use. I see how I can init my model and pass in a custom string but I'm unsure what the best practice is in where to store basic user prefrences such as this? Ini, Registry, somewhere else? I don't want the user to have to "Open" the file each time, just when it relocates and then the app will try to auto open from then on.

  Hello, TRUE/FALSE if clauses are easily and quickly done in R. However, if the argument gets more complex, it also gets ugly very soon. For instance: I might want to execute different operations for a row(foo) dependent on the value in one cell (foo[1]). Let the intervals be 0:39 and 40:59 and 60:100 Something like does not exit: (if foo[1] "in" 40:60){... In fact, I only see ways of at least two if clauses and two else statements and the action for the first interval somewhere at the bottom of the code. With more intervals(or any other condition) it is getting more complex. Is there a best practice (for this purpose or others) with a simple construction and nice design to read? Thanks a lot!

  i like jquery lightbox control looks nice and shows me a title one 1 of x images etc. I need exactly the same thing but without pop up. So whas is now visible after i click thumnail of image i want it to by visible as inline content somewhere on my page with first image loaded and then i could just use next prev. of course in this case, close would not be applicable. Does anybode know such a jquery plugin or how to change lightbox to work withoud popup? Thanks.

  Given a collection of named Foos from ActiveRecord, why does Array.include? not seem to call Foo.== but yet index does? class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base def ==(s) self.name == s end end class Bar < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :foos end bar.foos << Foo.new( :name = 'hmm' ) bar.foos.all.include?('hmm') # does select all from db every time = true bar.foos.include?('hmm') # does not go to db, but does not find the Foo! = false bar.foos.index('hmm') # does not go to db, but does find the Foo[0] ! = 0 bar.foos.index('eh') # no such object = nil I understand shallow about the proxies, but (without a detour into the AR source) why is index seemingly behaving correctly but include? is not !? • How can I retrieve monitor information?

  I am trying to retrieve the monitor ID's as shown in the Windows display properties (#1, 2... etc), but I can't seem to find a way. I have tried using EnumDisplayMonitors as well as EnumDisplayDevices. They both return something like "\.\DISPLAY1". However, this number doesn't always match the number shown by Windows, especially when 2 video cards are being used to drive 3 or more monitors. Is there an API call I am missing to retrieve this information, or is there a way to get it from the registry or somewhere else? Thanks! I have tried these methods: Win32: EnumDisplayMonitors, EnumDisplayDevices: Neither of these return monitors that aren't active, and neither one returns the correct IDs. WMI: "select * from Win32_DesktopMonitor" doesn't return all the monitors, and there is no ID. Registry: I have found the monitors in various locations, none of the places I found have the info I am looking for. Any help is much appreciated. :)

• How to get SQL Server Date in its native format?

  I need to get a Date from an SQL Server Database (SQL Server 2000), the date is stored as such: 2009-09-30 00:00:00.000 I want to pass this date into a Classic ASP function to use this date in the Database somewhere else, however when I get the date, it converts in my ASP code to a locale-dependant version, such as: 30/09/2009 I just want the date as-is as formatting the date so it is correct again seems unnecessary, although if this the only way then fine - is there any way to treat it as string data so it stays like that, so it can be inserted back into the database as the same date, without needing conversion?

• How do I compile for windows XP under windows 7 / visual studio 2008

  I'm running Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2008 Pro and trying to get my application to work on Windows XP SP3. It's a really minimal command line program so should have any ridiculous dependencies: // XPBuild.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // #include "stdafx.h" int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { printf("Hello world"); getchar(); return 0; } I read somewhere that defining several constants such as WINVER should allow me to compile for other platforms. I've tried the added the following to my /D compiler options: ;WINVER=0x0501;_WIN32_WINNT 0x0501;NTDDI_VERSION=NTDDI_WINXP But that made no difference. When I run it on my Windows XP machine (actually running in a virtualbox) I get the following error: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. So what have I missed? Is there something else required to run MSVC compiled programs or a different compiler option or something else?

  For everyone that was thinking of the error_reporting() function, then it isn't, what I need is whenever a MySQL query has been done, and the statement has like if($result) { echo "Yes, it was fine... bla bla"; } else { echo "Obviously, the echo'ing will show in a white page with the text ONLY..."; } Whenever statements have been true or false, I want the error to be appeared when redirected with the header() function and echo the error reporting in a div somewhere on the page. Basically something like this: $error = ''; This part appears inside the div tags <div><?php echo $error; ?></div> So the error part will be echoed when redirected with the header() if($result) { $error = "Yes, it was fine... bla bla"; header("Location: url"); } else { $error = "Something wrong happened..."; header("Location: url"); } But that just doesn't work :(
