• Retail knowledge inference

  So i am doing a research on how can i infer knowledge from reports (not with a specific format), but after pre processing, i should have some kind of formatted data. A fairly basic inference would be: "Retailer has X stock." and "X is sellable." - "Retailer sells X" the knowledge i focus is retail domain oriented, and if possible i should improve its efficiency with each iteration. Is this scifi(some of my friends think it is)? The related stuff i find online are "expert systems" that find anomalies, fuzzy inference systems and some rants about "easy knowledge". Can you help me with some points for me to focus or orient me in some research directions? blueomega

• Integrating a C project in the iPhone SDK

  Hello, This is my first time doing this sort of project so apologies if the question is silly. I've got a question about using a C project with a project in the iPhone SDK. I've dragged and dropped the C project into the iPhone project in Xcode (so it appears in the screenshot below). sjeng.h is a file inside GameEngine.xcodeproj, but when I try to include the header file, I not only receive an error, but the file it is looking for seems to be capitalized whereas the import statement is not. (I would post a screenshot but this is my first time doing something on stack overflow and I need more reputation points.   Hello, Assume such situation: int a = (--t)*(t-2); int b = (t/=a)+t; In C and C++ this is undefined behaviour, as described here: Undefined Behavior and Sequence Points However, how does this situation look in: JavaScript, Java, PHP... C# well, any other language which has compound operators? I'm bugfixing a Javascript - C++ port right now in which this got unnoticed in many places. I'd like to know how other languages generally handle this... Leaving the order undefined is somehow specific to C and C++, isn't it?

• How do you do A/B switching in a web app? (for deploying updates)

  I currently have a mysite.com (A) which points to /public_html/ and a dev.mysite.com (B) which I created a /dev_html/ for that. I cloned the site but now I need a way of switching between them without having to copy all the files from one dir to another and without bringing the site down. I just want to switch the live site to B and then work on A, and when I finish, switch the live site to A and work on B. Is there a simple way? I'm using cPanel X and cPanel 11 (WHM VPS). Also, both can interact with the same database so that's not an issue as I'm not changing any database structure. Only the php/js/img files need to switch.

• Sanitize json input to a java server

  I'm using json to pass data between the browser and a java server. I'm using Json-lib to convert between java objects and json. I'd like to strip out susupicious looking stuff (i.e "doSomethingNasty().) from the user input while converting from json to java. I can imagine several points at which I could do this: I could examine the raw json string and strip out funny-looking stuff I could look for a way to intercept every json value on its way into the java object, and look for funny stuff there. I could traverse my new java objects immediately after reconstitution from json, look for any fields that are Strings, and stripp stuff out there. What's the best approach? Are there any technologies built for this this task that I tack tack on to what I have already?

• Detect aborted connection during ASIO request

  Is there an established way to determine whether the other end of a TCP connection is closed in the asio framework without sending any data? Using Boost.asio for a server process, if the client times out or otherwise disconnects before the server has responded to a request, the server doesn't find this out until it has finished the request and generated a response to send, when the send immediately generates a connection-aborted error. For some long-running requests, this can lead to clients canceling and retrying over and over, piling up many instances of the same request running in parallel, making them take even longer and "snowballing" into an avalanche that makes the server unusable. Essentially hitting F5 over and over is a denial-of-service attack. Unfortunately I can't start sending a response until the request is complete, so "streaming" the result out is not an option, I need to be able to check at key points during the request processing and stop that processing if the client has given up.

• Can a binary tree or tree be always represented in a Database as 1 table and self-referencing?

  I didn't feel this rule before, but it seems that a binary tree or any tree (each node can have many children but children cannot point back to any parent), then this data structure can be represented as 1 table in a database, with each row having an ID for itself and a parentID that points back to the parent node. That is in fact the classical Employee - Manager diagram: one boss can have many people under him... and each person can have n people under him, etc. This is a tree structure and is represented in database books as a common example as a single table Employee.

• Redimming arrays in VBA

  I have 3 arrays of data, that are filled by reading off of an excel sheet, some of the points of data are missing and as such have just been entered into excel as "NA" so I want to look through my array and find each instance of these NA's and remove them from the array since the information is useless. I need to update all three arrays at the same time. • C: Cannot declare pointer inside if statement

  Hi, I have a pointer which points to a function. I would like to: if (mode == 0) { const unsigned char *packet = read_serial_packet(src, &len); } else { const unsigned char *packet = read_network_packet(fd, &len); } But I cannot do it because my compiler complains when I first use the pointer later in the code. error: 'packet' undeclared (first use in this function) This is strange. It worked without the if statement, but now I need my program to be able to get data from different sources. Isn't it possible to do this? I think so. If it isn't, is there any other simple way to get what I am trying? Thanks a lot.

  (Followup to this question) After surviving the first wave of incoming shipments (9 hours of copy/paste), I now believe I have all the requirements. Here is the updated workflow: Monkey collects email attachments (4 Excel spreadsheets, 1 PDF) Monkey creates central database, does complex calculations (right now this is also an Excel spreadsheet) Monkey sends data to two bosses, who set the retail prices independently; first one to reply wins Monkey sends order form to our other warehouses, also Excel Monkey sends spreadsheets to VIP customers, carefully sanitized and formatted (4 different discount categories) Jurily enters the data into the accounting system. I've given up on automating this part, there's too much business logic involved, and the database is a pile of sh^W legacy My question: What technologies would you use for a quick and dirty solution? I'm mostly sold on C#, but coming from a Linux/C++ background, I'm horribly confused about my choices in Microsoft-land. For bonus points: How would you redesign the whole system from the ground up? P.S. in case you were wondering, my job title is System Administrator.

• How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

  I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bing to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

• Complicated football league Dynamic Ordering in MySQL?

  I have a table 'games' for a football league as follows: date home_team_id away_team_id home_score away_score - 1 2 6 21 - 3 1 7 19 I can't figure out how to dynamically generate a list of team ID's ordered by Wins (then points for if poss)? -- I have this query which works fine when I have a $team_id but of cause then I can only do 1 team at a time, and that doesn't allow for ordering at query level ((SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `games` WHERE ((`home_score` > `away_score`) AND `home_team_id` = '.$team_id.')) + (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `games` WHERE ((`home_score` < `away_score`) AND `away_team_id` = '.$team_id.'))) AS `wins` I wonder if i can use this with some form of GROUP, or mySQL can know the $team_id itself? I've also tried some multiple JOINs with the 'team' table but they didn't work either.   I'm trying to deploy my WCF RIA services application to our in-house server for testing. I am running the version of the exe that I found inside of C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006 There is also C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Communication Foundation that has (what I assume is) the same exe in it, and I can use it just fine. I've tried to un-install the 3.0 version before installing the 4.0 version, but I am still getting the same warning and failure. Has anyone successfully done this with .net 4.0?

• Git index resets itself

  Every so often when I run git add . to add new files to my repo my git index will reset and think all the files in the repo have been deleted. I run these commands: git status git add . git status git commit -a -m "Commit message" everything looks fine at all those points until I commit and it says every file was deleted, all I have to do it run git add . and commit again to get the files back, but this becomes a pain. And this doesnt happen every time, maybe about 40% of the time. Anyone know why this might happen? I am on Mac OS 10.6.3 with Git 1.6.6

• Type mismatch in expression in Delphi 7 on SQL append

  I have a code, that checks the current date when a form is loaded, performs a simple calculation, and appends a SQL in Delphi. It works on Windows 7 with Delphi 7, and on another computer with Xp, but doesn't on 3 other computers with Xp. When the form is loaded it shows a "Type mismatch in expression", and points to the line after the append.   In .NET C#4.0 with the .NET Chart control I have this code to generate a pie chart: chart.Series[0].ChartType = SeriesChartType.Pie; foreach (Order order in orderCollection) { // If I set point.LegendText = order.UserName, .Group will erase it chart.Series[0].Points.AddXY(order.UserName, order.Total); } chart.DataManipulator.Sort(PointSortOrder.Ascending, "X", "Series1"); chart.DataManipulator.Group("SUM", 1, IntervalType.Months, "Series1"); This works well, it generates a pie chart with the top 10 users showing their total order sum. I would like to set the DataPoints' legendtext to the order.UserName property. The problem is, DataManipulator.Group overwrites the series DataPoints. So if I set the legendtext in the foreach loop, they will be erased after the Group call. And after the Group call, I don't see a way to retrieve the correct UserName for a DataPoint to set the legendtext. What is the best approach for this situation?

  Hello. I have a javascript widget witch provides standard extension points. One of them is the beforecreate function. It should return false to prevent an item from being created. I've added an AJAX call into this function using jQuery: beforecreate: function(node,targetNode,type,to) { jQuery.get('http://example.com/catalog/create/' + targetNode.id + '?name=' + encode(to.inp[0].value), function(result) { if(result.isOk == false) alert(result.message); }); } But I want to prevent my widget from creating the item, so I should return false in the mother-function, not in the callback. Now I understand that Paypal offers a lot of features under the roof and I can't implement all of them at once. I want to implement the core functionality of Paypal and other such services. So my question is (rather discussion is) around how would one go about building such a system. Some points to discuss: Handle payments through existing banks. • Use eval to set unknown property in Python

  I have an User class, that has multiple properties inside it, and I also have addPoint method for User class, which allows user to input points into any of it's properties. However, there can be up to like 500 properties, everyone can have different ones, etc. So it would be a pain in the ass to code every property with "if: - elif:". Now this is what I tried to do, to make it much easier and cleaner: class User: def __init__(self): self.health = 0 self.speed = 0 def addPoint(self, property, amount): eval("self."+property) = eval("self."+property) + amount And now when I'd do fe. u = User() u.addPoint("health", 5) I would like it to do this: self.health = self.health + 5, and that's what I used the eval()s for. However, Python's just giving me error: can't assign to function call. I'm not trying to assign the eval() function call itself, I'm trying to assign the returned value from eval(), so how could I do this the easiest way?

• Setting variables in web config for web service consumption

  I did a couple google searches about this and am not finding anything, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm working on our internal CMS and I noticed that we're getting live data back when doing debugging because of our web services instead of the dev data that I wanted. It doesn't do this on our dev CMS website, but we're trying to do all our development on localhost. Is there any way to set up an environment variable in our web config for the URL so that the CMS points to the dev database instead of live database that is referenced in the wsdl files?

• Projection matrix + world plane ~> Homography from image plane to world plane

  I think I have my wires crossed on this, it should be quite easy. I have a projection matrix from world coordinates to image coordinates (4D homogeneous to 3D homgeneous), and therefore I also have the inverse projection matrix from image coordinates to world "rays". I want to project points of the image back onto a plane within the world (which is given of course as 4D homogeneous vector). The needed homography should be uniquely identified, yet I can not figure out how to compute it. Of course I could also intersect the back-projected rays with the world plane, but this seems not a good way, knowing that there MUST be a homography doing this for me. Thanks in advance, Ben

• Choosing a plotting library for web/browser application

  Hello, I am looking for a plotting/graphing library (mostly to do line plots) for my application. I have been looking at JavaScript APIs (like Google's) but I found them to be slowing down things at client side (I am plotting a quite large number of points). I also found that with client-side libraries, the performance was quite varied depending on the user's computer. With moving to a server-side library I would cut down on this variance, and would have more control over data flow (my data is in a MySQL database). I have then looked at some PHP-based plotting libraries, but a lot of them seem to be "forgotten" (no new version for years). I have been eying pChart, but it has not had an update in almost two years. First, what would you recommend: server-side or client-side approach? Second, what library would you recommend. Paid libraries are definitely an option, as I don't mind paying for quality software that would cut down on my development time. Thanks,

  How can I query the read/write ratio in Sql Server 2005? Are there any caveats I should be aware of? Perhaps it can be found in a DMV query, a standard report, a custom report (i.e the Performance Dashboard), or examining a Sql Profiler trace. I'm not sure exactly. Why do I care? I'm taking time to improve the performance of my web app's data layer. It deals with millions of records and thousands of users. One of the points I'm examining is database concurrency. Sql Server uses pessimistic concurrency by default--good for a write-heavy app. If my app is read-heavy, I might switch it to optimistic concurrency (isolation level: read uncommitted snapshot) like Jeff Atwood did with StackOverflow.

• Multiline for WPF TextBox

  I am developing a app for sending some feedback. Basically i'm trying to make a TextBox for comments, but i'm used to the WinForms MultiLine=true. I've set MinLines to 3, which is getting there, but preferably i'd like if user is able to type wherever in this block, like press enter and do dot points sort of thing - like: - Item 1 blah - Item 2 blahlb lahbvl d But at the moment the text all stays on one line. - Item 1 blah - Item 2 blahb blahb blah This comments will then help fill the body of an email which is sent. It may be pointless if I can't easily keep the same formatting when putting this string into the email body string (so that it looks like it does when sent as it does when typed). Can I achieve what I'm after or do I have to leave it as all text on one line?
