  • web page db query optimisation

    I am putting together a web page which is quite 'expensive' in terms of Db hits. I dont want to start optimizing at this stage - though with me trying to hit a deadline, I may end up not optimising at all. Currently the page requires 18 (thats right eighteen) hits to the db. I am already using joins, and some of the queries are UNIONed to minimize the trips to the db. My local dev machine can handle this (page is not slow) however, I feel if I release this into the wild, the number of queries will quickly overwhelm my database (mySQL). I could always use memcache or something similar, but I would much rather continue with my other dev work that needs to be completed before the deadline - at least retrieving the page work, its simply a matter of optimization. My question therefore is - is 18 db queries for a single page retrieval completely outrageous - (i.e. I should put everything on hold and optimize the hell of the retrieval logic), or shall I continue as normal, meet the deadline and release on schedule and see what happens?

  • Mysql Master Slave Replication on Large Database table (how to sync initial data)

    We have a production server and a dev server. We have found that backups are nearly impossible on the production server because of the query volume we experience. So, we're looking at setting up replication with our dev server being the slave. This is ideal because we can afford to lock the tables on that server and additionally it will be nice to have up to date data for the developers. Now, the issues. The production server can't really be taken down or locked at this point, at least not easily. We have a high query volume and fairly large 30+ GB innodb tables. Both servers are running all innodb and are also both on mysql 5.1. What can we do to sync the data initially to get replication started? I've tried a few options, but so far, none have worked.

  • How to modify the Title Bar text for SQL Server Management Studio?

    Sometimes I keep multiple instances of SQL Server Management Studio 2005 open. I might have the dev database open in one, and the production database open in another. These appear in the Windows task bar with the text "Microsoft SQL Serve...", which means it's impossible to differentiate between them unless I open the window and scroll the Object Explorer up to see what server the window is actually connected to. Is ther any way that I can get the window to display the server name first, and then the name of the application? Like "Dev-DB.database_name - Microsoft SQL Serve..." or whatever?

  • Database Schema Versioning Strategies

    I work on a project that uses a reasonably large database, the live version weighing in at somewhere around 60-80GB. The live database is the only real definitive source of our schema, and because of its size duplicating this database is too slow to be done often. This means we have ended up developing our database schema in a pretty ad hoc way, using sql compare to migrate changes from dev dbs to the live system, and only wiping our dev dbs every month or two. I am hoping to get some pointers on how to improve our database development work flow so that we have a little more control. Some things to think about: Currently nobody is really in charge of the database schema, all developers can change it if they need to, though generally these decisions are talked about before they are done. There are stored procedures, functions, and views in the database. These should probably be dumped to files so they can be reloaded on every build. Schema changes should probably be checked in as scripts. We have started to do this recently. However all our scripts must then be numbered (because there may be dependencies between them), and must be re runnable (because our build script currently runs them all in order). This makes them hard to read because they are full of conditionals that check whether tables or columns already exist. This is a step that is often forgotten by developers. Getting a new database should be quick and easy. This is currently a big problem, it takes several hours to get a copy of last nights backup and restore it onto a dev machine. Some mechanism needs to be in place to allow developers to update static data. We have tables that contain data that is never updated through the application, but does potentially need to be changed when we do a new release (often this drives dropdowns). The whole thing needs to be runnable as part of a build script. Are there any tools that can be used to help to do this? Eventually I would like to be at a point where a new DB can be built from scratch without copying any data from the live system. I don't mind writing some scripts to glue all the steps together but each part should be easily editable so that we continue to use it rather than make changes directly on DBs.

I would like to pick up C++ to possibly enter the 'game development' field, where now I'm doing web dev. I'm not a school person, but was wondering what people think about self-taught math to complement learning c++ for game dev. The last math course I took was algebra 2. Should I start delving myself into pre-calculus? Are there any other suggestions you may have to ease the process?

  • HTML5 video element non-seekable when using Django development server

    Hey everyone. I've got a Django app serving a webpage with an HTML5 element. There's a wierd "feature", turning the video element to be non-seekable: video.seekable returns a timeRanges object with length=0, whereas it should be length=1. This means I can't edit the video. JavaScript can't do anything either. The thing is, when I upload the problematic webpage, statically - no Django, just plain HTML/JS/CSS - to my website for testing, it works fine - length=1. However, if I try to serve the same static page on my Django dev server still gives the same problem. I am using Django's static serving for dev/debug purposes - Do you have any idea what is causing this, or how can I fix it? Thanks.

I have some experience with Objective-C and iPhone dev but none with Mac dev, I'm also a PC user normally so I'm not au fait with the norms of Mac usage. Any guidance here is appreciated. How do you get an application to autostart? Can you run an app in the tray bar? (with the clock etc in) or do apps only run in the dock?

  • Robust way to display an image with one fixed dimension

    Lets say that we have an image uploaded by the user, the upload script limits the mb but not the image size (so could be any proportion, 600X200,200X350, and so...). Im already showing this image in one part on my site using the twitter bootstrap image handler written on css, thats good for a profile picture, the problem is that now I want that image to be a cover (like facebook/twitter cover image), my site is responsive so the width of the cover is 900px or 100% if the screen resolution is less than 900px wide. The height is always fixed to 200px. So I know there is a way to control the correct image display using CSS (maybe with jquery too) but Im not a front-end dev, Im a php dev and I dont want to use server side scripts for doing this. So im looking for suggestions or pieces of codes (css, javascript) to start with, I belive that it have to be an already made solution for this, but I dont find any on google. Thanks for any advice!

    Is there a way to have a bit bucket pointer? A lot of IO (specifically input related) system calls return data to a buffer of a specific size. Is there a trick or way to make a sorta bit bucket pointer, so I can accept any amount of data that will be thrown away. Doing something like "char tmp[INT_MAX]" is crazy. The behavior I am looking for is something like /dev/null, only in a pointer world. Not to hopeful on this.... just curious. Thanks, Chenz UPDATE: Perhaps mmap-ing /dev/null.     I'm looking for a jquery equivalent of ext.js' toolbar (http://dev.sencha.com/deploy/dev/examples/menu/menus.html). To be more precisely, my requirements are the following: the toolbar should consist of iconic and textual buttons and dropdown widgets buttons should either trigger actions directly or open submenus buttons and submenus should have the ability to remember the last selected state buttonsets should group multiple buttons and only allow one of them to be active In short words, I'm looking for a real toolbar in jquery and not for some modified site menu. I experimented with the button/buttonset/menu widget in jquery ui 1.9m2, but found its IE performance rather poor. It also felt awkward to combine these isolated widgets into a logically connected toolbar. Does anyone know of a better jquery toolbar plugin?

  • HTTP server that handles requests through IO devices?

    This question can probably only be answered for Unix-like systems that follow the "everything is a file" idiom. Would it be hard to create a web server that mounts local devices for handling http traffic? It would enable a program to read raw http requests from /dev/httpin (for example) and write the responses to /dev/httpout. I think this would be nice because it would allow me to create a web server from any programming language that is capable of handling IO streams. I don't really know where to start on this. Any suggestions on how to setup such a system?

Right now there are three of us working on a "Dev" version of the project that all have our Eclipse linked to it with just an external folder, and thus no version control. What is the right way, and what is the best way, to version control this (not necessarily the same I dont think) We have a SVN set up but just need to find a good way to check in and check out that lets us test on the dev server.     Can you any one see anything wrong with the following apache rewrite rule: This is in my .htaccess file inside a folder called "text" a subdirectory of localhost/lombardpress I have the following rule Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ([^/]+) /textdisplay.php?fs=$1 [NC] I was expecting this input: http://localhost/lombardpress-dev/text/lectio1 to rewrite to this: http://localhost/lombardpress-dev/text/textdisplay?fs=lectio1 But instead I get a 404 error. The requested URL /textdisplay.php was not found on this server. It looks to me like the RewriteRule has re-written the address but not as I intended - so there must be something wrong with my regular expression. Let me know if I can provide further information.
