• Unity Search Not Working

  When I attempt a search after hitting Super, the spinner spins, but no results come up once the spinning stops. I'm not sure what changed that caused this. I had a newer kernel installed, but I have since reverted back to the default kernel. I also followed this guide: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-reset-unity-launcher-icons-or.html Alt+F2 does not work. The packages unity-place-applications and unity-place-files are installed. But search still doesn't function correctly.

• Few questions about Thunderbird in Ubuntu 11.10

  I am happy with Ubuntu choice to replace Evolution with Thunderbird. However, I am having some issues with it. 1. What do you use to make Thunderbird minimize (and disappear from the launcher) when closing it? It should still be running (and give me notifications of new emails) but do not bother me on Launcher or in the list of windows, because I need free space. I tried using FireTray extension, it works quite okay, but it's buggy - sometimes there are two instances of Thunderbird open when using it and also, Thunderbird's global menu disappears after some time of using the extension. 2. Is there a plan to integrate Thunderbird's calendars into Date indicator in Ubuntu? I'd like to see my events when I have clicked on the time. Thanks.

  I'm serving a binary file (.IPA) with Ubuntu/Apache 2.2. When I have chosen Save Linked File As... in Safari, it says it's text file. And it guides me to add .txt extension. However it does not add any extra extension when I download it just clicking link. I added line AddType application/octet-stream .ipa in apache configuration file. I don't know what's wrong with this. Is this a bug of Safari or my misconfiguration? (1) If it caused by bug, how can I avoid this? (2) Or if it caused by misconfiguration, what should I do?

• AHCI Hotswap in Lucid Server

  Does Lucid support hotswapping of AHCI devices? Is there anything more to it than simply unmounting all filesystems on the drive to be disconnected and plugging in the new disk? 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02) is the controller I'm working with. BIOS is set to AHCI. I also tried simply unmounting and unplugging. That seemed to work fine. Plugging in a new drive locked up the system. AHCI kernel module is also loaded. I've also looked at the Raid WIKI on kernel.org which talks about hardware requirements for AHCI HotSwapping of disks. My drives and cables all appear to meet the criteria, but most of that info pertains to the electrical side (grounding, etc...).

  Is there a way to determine the speed of the PCI Express connection to a specific card? I have three cards plugged in: two Nvidia GTX 480's (one at x16 & and one at x8) one Nvidia GTX 460 running at x8 Is there some way, either by a function call in C or an option to lspci that I can determine the bus speed of the graphics cards? When I only use one of the cards for my CUDA program, I'd like to use the one which is running at x16. Thanks! Note: lspci -vvv dumps out For the two GTX 480s.   Well I have installed avast anti virus on Ubuntu 12.04. But after updating, it crashes! So I have made some tweaks like below: 1) I pressed press Ctrl+Alt+T and opened Terminal. • Cannot sleep/standby in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop i386 on my netbook (HP Mini 311c). I am unable to use the sleep mode. When I press the suspend button (or do sudo pm-suspend), the screen flickers but the computer does not power off. Even worse, the screen comes back up and I'm back where I left off. Hibernating does work (although it is not available in Power Management). I have to use pm-hibernate to make that work. I'm using the 3.2.0.20 kernel and Gnome 3.3.92 (Unity, especially compiz, is a resource hog). Before Ubuntu 12.04, I was using Mint Linux 12 with the 3.0 kernel and everything worked fine back then. Any help is much appreciated because this is driving me crazy.

• Xen 4.1 + NVidia driver = Unity has no window decorations

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity. I installed XEN and booted its kernel. The machine booted normally. However, when I started Unity (3D), there were no window decorations. I tried Unity 2D and the window decorations are present there. I then decided to remove the driver (installed through Additional Drivers) and install it manually like this: IGNORE_XEN_PRESENCE=y CC="gcc -DNV_VMAP_4_PRESENT -DNV_SIGNAL_STRUCT_RLIM" ./NVIDIA* ...but the window decorations were still missing in Unity 3D. The window decorations are there when I boot the regular Ubuntu kernel (without XEN support). What could be the problem and how to fix it?

Instead the mail it so a list containing all developers and most often I add the entries. I just thought adding something like score, achievements, badges or similar could add motivation but I cannot find a extension for media wiki. Is there such an extension? Is one of these recommended? • Boot delay and mouse lag at login after Ubuntu 12.04 update

  I am facing these weird problems after updating Ubuntu 12.04 with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade: It takes too much time to come to the Plymouth theme after selecting Ubuntu from the grub menu. Is it possible to correct this? On the login screen, before entering the password, whenever I move the mouse, it is kind of lagging/stuck. Only after entering the password and pressing Enter, it works normally. I think this may be because of the updated kernel. If so, is it possible to downgrade the kernel to the previous one ? If that is not the reason, what can be the problem?

• How to give control over keyboard back to X server after Alt + SysRq + R trick

  Situation: an application freezes the X server and no keyboard input works. So I use Alt+SysRq+R to take the keyboard out of raw mode (make the kernel take control of the keyboard away from the X server). I can then type Ctrl+Alt+F1, kill the bad processes, and everything works again. So far so good. But the keyboard is still in the hands of the kernel, making Alt+Left/Right shortcuts for Decr_Console/Incr_Console. This is annoying, and I want to give control over the keyboard back to the X server. I have tried typing Alt+SysRq+R again, this does not switch things back. I have also tried the command kbd_mode -u, but nothing changes. Any advice?

• Using Query Classes With NHibernate

  Even when using an ORM, such as NHibernate, the developer still has to decide how to perform queries. The simplest strategy is to get access to an ISession and directly perform a query whenever you need data. The problem is that doing so spreads query logic throughout the entire application – a clear violation of the Single Responsibility Principle. A more advanced strategy is to use Eric Evan’s Repository pattern, thus isolating all query logic within the repository classes. I prefer to use Query Classes. Every query needed by the application is represented by a query class, aka a specification. To perform a query I: Instantiate a new instance of the required query class, providing any data that it needs Pass the instantiated query class to an extension method on NHibernate’s ISession type. To query my database for all people over the age of sixteen looks like this: [Test] public void QueryBySpecification() { var canDriveSpecification = new PeopleOverAgeSpecification(16); var allPeopleOfDrivingAge = session.QueryBySpecification(canDriveSpecification); } To be able to query for people over a certain age I had to create a suitable query class: public class PeopleOverAgeSpecification : Specification<Person> { private readonly int age; public PeopleOverAgeSpecification(int age) { this.age = age; } public override IQueryable<Person> Reduce(IQueryable<Person> collection) { return collection.Where(person => person.Age > age); } public override IQueryable<Person> Sort(IQueryable<Person> collection) { return collection.OrderBy(person => person.Name); } } Finally, the extension method to add QueryBySpecification to ISession: public static class SessionExtensions { public static IEnumerable<T> QueryBySpecification<T>(this ISession session, Specification<T> specification) { return specification.Fetch( specification.Sort( specification.Reduce(session.Query<T>()) ) ); } } The inspiration for this style of data access came from Ayende’s post Do You Need a Framework?. • Freezes if desktop effects is used.

  I have found that using desktop effects in Ubuntu versions later than 8.10 causes the desktop to freeze after a few seconds on my PC. the command lspci -nn gave the following 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) and with lspci -k I have 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 The intel graphics cards seems to have some performence issues with xorg driver. However I have not noticed any freeze in Ubuntu 8.10. There are some workarounds at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes to make them work. But I can't find out what workaround should I do with my graphics controller. I have tried workaround F but it did not help. can anyone help me find a workaround for my graphics card? and is it actually possible to use desktop effect in this graphics card ?

  Sup, so, I'm not familiar with linux at all so help is much appreciated. I've been trying to boot my pc up from a live CD unsuccessfully. I get to the stage at which there are the options to test without installing or install or so on where I select 'Install Ubuntu.' Here it relays through some fast DOS commands until it reaches 'end trace' and then, eventually, 'Killed.' I have already got a functional 11.10 version installed, could this be a problem? The reason I am attempting a reinstall is because the package system is damaged inside 11.10, a problem I can't seem to solve. If I try to install any new software from within the software centre it tells me that two banshee extensions must be removed.   I am trying dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on my Elitebook 8560w via WUBI. Between Microsoft and HP they used up all my primary partitions so I decided WUBI was the best way to go. It all goes smoothly until I reboot to finish the installation, then it hangs at copying files. It always freezes here: debconf (filter): widget found for ubiquity/install/title debconf (filter): -- 0 OK It also says something about "so and so might freeze best to kill it" but I didn't get it written down. Can anybody tell me what that means? I added the extension tar.gz to this file and I could unpack it to a location with other folders and files, there was a file install too. This was a .bin file and I used sudo chmod +x on this file and I used ./filename and installation has been launched I had to accept licence and so on. After successfully installation I tried to launch Packet Tracer and nothing happened. Please help me, how can I correctly install and run Packet Tracer. Note that I'm new in using Linux.
