• How do I get a USB hard-disk adaper to work with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I have a PCMCIA (Cardbus) 32bit USB 2.0 2-port card. If I plug my MP3 player in it works fine. I have a USB adapter for a hard disk drive. When I plug that into the PCMCIA USB slot the light on that hard disk flashed between red and green - it should stay green. "USB Mass Storage device" is added in the Device Manager, but no drive letter appears in My Computer. The installing device icon down by the clock never goes away. (Windows XP SP3.)

  My Google search for ""does installing windows format the hard disk" returns: No results found for "does installing windows format the hard disk". I was quite surprised. I'm hoping to get a quick answer here. Does an install format the hard disk, and destroy all data, including non-os/s data? -Or do you specifically have to say "format" at some point so you know you are losing everything? [I tried to go to SP3, but it doesn't work on my computer. My SP2 disk is fired. I only have a SP1 disk, with a seperate SP2 package. I can't get to Safe Mode to uninstall SP3 ("Windows XP Setup cann run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.). I don't want running the SP1 disk to destroy any non-o/s data.] Thanks.

• Use only external monitor at screen's native resolution

  My laptop's screen lamp just died (I can see content on the screen if I point a light at it) and I was using it with an external monitor. I can switch from extended desktop to mirrored mode but, and here is where I need help, the resolutions don't match. The laptop's resolution is 1600x1200 and the external monitor is 1680x1050. I am ok with just using one screen ATM but I would like for it to at least use the native resolution of the external monitor. This is Windows XP and under Monitor settings I only get the resolutions for the original monitor under mirrored mode. How can I force the screen into a resolution not supported by the laptop screen but that is a native resolution for the external monitor?

• Performance Bottleneck with Photoshop CS3 on XPSP3

  I have an intel core 2 4400, with 4GB of ram running on XP 32-BIT SP3. Photoshop CS3 becomes sluggish & unresponsive even after loading up small files, and this is with only Bridge open as well, plus McAffee AV. My photos are loaded in from a USB 2 external drive, and my c: drive is used only for programs and windows itself. Even with 4GB of RAM, i am seeing the pagefile increase to 1.6GB, whilst there appears to be 1.5GB of RAM free to use. I've defragged the drive, with defraggler, and after that the only file reported to be fragmented was the pagefile itself. Anyone have any ideas what i can do to improve/solve this?

• Sound leaks from speaker even when headphones are inserted

  I've a Dell Optiplex 960 (which I presume has a speaker inside the tower). This speaker is normally in use whenever I play music (lets call this "tower speaker"), and when I insert my headphones in the 3.5mm jack (of the tower), the tower speaker stops and the music is played through the headphones (an obvious thing to happen). But sometimes, the tower speaker starts playing the music even when the headphones are inserted! So, the music is played through both of them! This gets quite embarrassing. So, my question is - Is there a way to turn off this "tower speaker"? EDIT : I'm using Windows XP

• Sound card problem, no audio device detected

  I bought a new sound card because my built in sound card did not function. When I open YouTube, Media Player or anything that can create a sound my computer will hang up and sometimes when I start my computer it will hang when the Windows XP sound will activate. Update: My computer has no audio. It says NO AUDIO DEVICE. I already installed Realtek AC97 and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and I also pasted stream.dll to the Windows and system32 folders and I restarted my computer but it still says NO AUDIO DEVICE.   I just bought a blue-tooth dongle about 2 days ago but for some reason I can't get it to work when my cell phone is 10 feet away . It only works when I am within 1 metre range. According to what it says in the box, the dongle is suppose to provide me with 100 metre range. I was not provided any CD/DVD driver.   The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • Changed folder icon in WinXP and now clicking a folder opens in a new window.

  I got bored and decided to change my folder icon from the boring yellow default. Somewhere in my experiments, I discovered that anytime I open a folder it opens in a "search" window. This happened because when I go to the "(file folder)" type, the only option in there is "find" that is not supposed to be the default; upon saving this form XP tries to do me a favour and sets this as the new default. Now whenever I try to click a folder it opens the search window. How do I fix this?

  I like to play some downloaded Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files without opening my internet browser. Sometime ago, I remember I could do it just double clicking on the SWF item. Then it was opening in a plain Shockwave window. Now XP won't play ball. I tried Folder Options > File types but couldn't find the associated player exe. How can I surpass this? Edit: There has to be some way to do this without a 3rd party software since I can already play SWFs on my browsers.

• monitor a folder and send files via ftp to clients

  I am looking for software that will monitor a specific folder and when a file is created in it send that file off via ftp to a client associated with that folder by the software. I have tried software such as smart FTP and cute FTP and they don't seem to monitor folders very consistently. Some of the options with them were to write scripts to delete duplicated files from the transfer queue. I really don't want to have to write scripts for software I purchase. I am not opposed to needing scripting or writing it but I feel I shouldn't have to write scripting to make there software properly do some thing it says it does out of the box. I am currently trying to do this on a Windows XP box though running on a Server 2003 is an option if it would make things easier. I really just want pointed in the correct direction this is all fairly foreign to me

• Can I manually add a thumbnail web page to the Chrome homepage?

  Is there a way to manually add a web page to the 8 thumbnails that appear when you open Chrome? I want to add Google Maps for easy access. The Google front page already shows up so I presume the Google Maps page never will as it's a subset of Google (i.e. I get to it via the main Google front page). I know I can add a shortcut to the toolbar but would rather add it as a thumbnail. And while I'm here, is it possible to increase the number of thumbnails that appear? I'm running the release/stable version of Chrome in Windows XP.

• Windows audio service fails to automatically start after VirtualBox install

  I'm having a completely nonsensical issue in Windows XP SP3. Basically my "Windows Audio" service no longer starts automatically. Despite being set to "Automatic" I have to manually go in and start it. This issue didn't start until the most recent update of VirtualBox, but I can't find anything on the forums related to this specific issue. I've tried reinstalling the RealTek drivers as well, in the event that that had something to do with it. Any assistance is most appreciated! EDIT 1: It is the host's audio that won't start. The update of Virtualbox was merely the "marker" of when these events started occurring. Given it's the only variable/change I'm assuming a correlation.

• Redirect audio from laptop to desktop over LAN

  I want to be able to play a song on my laptop and have it sound through my desktop's (infinitely better) speakers. If you're familiar with Input Director: I want something that is to audio what Input Director is to mouse/keyboard. I want something that automatically redirects all audio from the laptop to the desktop in real time, and I want that solution to require, like Input Director, minimum maintenance. Beyond the initial setup, I don't want to have to babysit the program that does this. I want something that launches automatically with Windows and just works, and also allows me to cancel it whenever I want. And also doesn't go crazy when the laptop is turned on in a different network where the desktop computer isn't available. Any suggestions for such a program? (I use Windows XP on both computers.)

  Let's say I have two active network connections that let me out to the internet. I want certain applications to only use Network Connection 1, while some others should use Network Connection 2. Is this possible in Windows XP? If so, how can it be done? • How to install Windows on a laptop with no CDROM drive?

  I have an old Thinkpad X60 that I'd like to wipe clean and rebuild. Seeing as this machine doesn't have an optical drive, what's the easiest way of installing Windows XP? I have an external USB hard drive available. Would it be possible to run the install from that instead? Otherwise, what options do I have? Edit: assuming we're using a USB mass storage device... Is there a BIOS setting that I would need to change, or will it configure itself automatically? Would the USB drive need to be configured in any special manner, or would simply having a copy of the Windows CD files in a directory there be sufficient? Since the first couple answers that came in were basically "yes", I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly. I'm asking for detailed instructions on how to do this, not just a sanity check that I'm headed in the right direction. Thanks!

• Missing the "add tab group to favorites " option in IE8

  I have internet options selected for quick tabs and tab groups in settings, IE8 WIndows XP. I can open a list of favorites from the menu using the blue arrow as a tab group. I can then use the quick tabs button to show the groups open. However, I do not have the "add tab group to favorites" option in the pull down menu for favorites at the Favorite Bar. Is this a Vista feature only? I just checked two of my Vista basic machines SP2, one also does NOT have the option. The laptop DOES have the option.

  Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2).
