  • Can I automatically login to ssh using passwords from OS X keychain?

    I need to login to an ssh server which doesn't support key based authentication. And I don't want to type the passwords every time. I am using OS X Lion (10.7.2). I have added the passwords to the OS X keychain[1]. Now I can retrieve the password automatically from the keychain using /usr/bin/security, however I can't find a way to send this password to the ssh prompt. I also tried sshpass. However when I try to run it ssh exits with the following error: ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied (publickey,password). Is there anyway I can login to this server without having to enter the password every time?   • Read/WRITE/Verify disk diagnostic tool for Mac OS X?

    It seems that there are many tools out there for Mac OS X that test a hard drive for bad blocks by doing a Read/Verify pass. That is, they read a block, then read it a second time, and verify that both reads yielded the same results. I need a tool that does a non-destructive Read/Write/Verify pass. It should read each block, write those same contents back out, and then read it again to verify. That way every block gets written, giving the hard drive a chance to spare out bad blocks. But since the same contents that were just read get written back out, it doesn't destroy data that wasn't already lost. I'm aware of several tools that can do Read/Verify, but I'm not aware of any that do Read/Write/Verify. Are there any tools that do what I want? Unix / open source tools that compile and run on Mac OS X are fair game too.

  • Can I list file names (or their parent directories) that were recently deleted using rm in OS X?

    Is it possible to find out which files and directories have recently been deleted by rm in OS X? Or failing that, is it possible to find which parent directories have had files or directories within it deleted? The OS version is Snow Leopard. Background: Last night, rvm (ruby version manager) did rm -rf of the ~/ruby directory from the home directory. (This bug has since been fixed) Ideally, I'd like to know what files within the ~/ruby directory were deleted, but failing that, I'd like to know if rvm deleted anything outside of ~/ruby . In case anyone's wondering about backups...: Just about everything within ~/ruby is a git project that has a remote repo, and I have a fairly recent Time Machine backup (only 20 days old).

  • Why does the release build of my iPhone app crash on the device on the first run after installation?

    I have an iPhone app that's been in development for about 2 weeks. We recently tried the "release" version of the build on a device, and to our great unhappiness, it crashes in one of the views with an "EXC_BAD_ACCESS". This crash only occurs on devices, and only in the "release" build. Not only that, but it only happens the first time the app is launched! It is also 100% reproducible. We have removed the small block of code that deals with data persistence, and have tried re-openning Xcode, cleaning the project, deleting and reinstalling the app, etc., as some other questions suggest. Do you have any advice for a) what might be causing this problem, and b) how to go about debugging if it only happens in "release"? Thanks

  • Installed over 4G RAM on 32-bit OS? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: 32-bit Windows Server address > 4GB RAM - How? I know that for 32-bit OS, the addressable memory space for each process is "4G" (maybe just 3G in user space...). If I have a 8G RAM, is it correct that all of the processes can still utilize (shared) these 8G memory but each of them are limited to a maximum 4G? Or the whole system only can see and utilize 4G out of 8G and thus having 8G RAM on a 32-bit OS is the same as having 4G RAM on it?

    When I call CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform() with a rotation argument, the application crashes. If I specify no rotation, there is no crash.     I'm trying to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server on VirtualBox. I know this is duplicated question, however another questions have no fine answer. I'm trying to install on VirtualBox on iMac. So this is pretty legal. But the problem is I want to install with DMG image. Because installing DVD drive is too slow, and I have to install Mac OS X many times. And taking DVD disc from box is annoying too. But VirtualBox fails installing. It couldn't load kernel. It installs well with DVDs. Is there any way to do this? I'm considering using other VM solutions like Parallels or VMWare if they can support install from DMG images well. If you know about them certainly, please let me know.

  • How to stop OS X from switching input method (keyboard layout) automatically?

    After using the wireless keyboard that comes with the iMac, I have switched to a MS Ergo Natural 4000 one. Surprisingly I had to install extra software as OS X could not work out which keyboard I had. After which I went into sys prefs and set the main input method to be "British - Microsoft" first and "Swiss German" second (what the wireless keyboard is), on the "input sources" tab: However... OS X keeps resetting my input method back to Swiss German which is driving me bananas. I have the flag thingy top right so I can see when this changes. N.B. I have "input source options" set to "use the same one in all documents" which I am assuming means keep the language the same for anything running. It also flips back on the login page. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I previously used bridged networking for my guest, but I'm constantly moving my host between networks so the guest IP is always different.   • Is there a way to customise PPD distribution of printer drivers effectively with Mac Os X server?

    Hi, we have two network printers shared via our 10.5.8 Mac Os Server machine. They have drivers provided by the manufacturer that allow job logging (printing with a print code). I've installed said drivers on the server, but when we distribute the printer on our Mac Os clients (using add printer via bonjour) it deploys older drivers that don't support Job Logging. Is there a way to update the store of print drivers (cups drivers?) on the server so it distributes the updated drivers, rather than the older one?

    I have Office 2008 for OS X through Microsoft's HUP (Home Use Program). I want to reinstall, so I need to first remove it. For Office on OS X, Microsoft provides a binary called "/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Additional Tools/Remove Office/Remove Office". When I run it, it says it can't find any versions of office on my computer and won't do anything. I know MS-Office for Mac puts many different components in various places all over the system and not just within it's own applications folder, so how to I successfully remove Office so I can re-install?

    Dear All, I recently started using Mac OS X for a flex/actionscript project and having a problem with flash player debugger plugin for the browsers: OSX: 10.6.3 Browsers I tried: firefox, safari and chrome Flashplayer debug "Flash Player 10 Plugin content debugger (Intel-based Macs) Whenever I open a page containing a flash content, my browser crashes due to flash player plugin's crash. I checked the version of my flash player debug plugin with http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html and as the version checker is written in flash, my browser crashes a few seconds later.   • Would Apple be able to tell if I'm running Mac OS inside a VM?

    Just as the question/title says. I understand that running Mac OS inside of a VM is against the EULA for the consumer version (but not the server, which is much more expensive!) If I were to purchase a legal copy of Mac OS, and install it to a VM, then register as an Apple Developer, would they shut me out? Is there a way they can tell the difference between emulated hardware and Apple computers? I'm slightly unfamiliar with how all of Apple's software works. Windows goes through this "genuine" test whenever installing service packs, but I don't know if Mac goes through the same trouble. Many thanks, -Tom

    I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different.     So my command line skills are a little rusty and I'm having trouble remembering the differences between the meanings of flags in different distro's os's. I also don't really remember all my technical lingo so manpages seem really unclear. Basically I'm on Mac OS X and want to delete a directory along with all of its contents. What I'm mainly concerned about, I suppose, is that it'll delete literally ALL of the references within the directory, including ../ and ../<everything else, including ../'s own ../> and then just totally screw up my entire system.   • Backing up my data causes my server to crash using Symantec Backup Exec 12, or How I Came to Loathe Irony

    I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 running Windows Server 2003. It is the primary file server for one of my clients. I have another server also running Windows Server 2003 that acts as the core media server for Symantec Backup Exec 12. I recently upgraded from Backup Exec 11d to 12. This upgrade was necessary because we also just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. After the upgrade I had to push-install the new version 12 Backup Exec Remote Agents to each of the servers I am backing up (about 6 total). 5 of my servers are doing just fine, faithfully completing backups every night. My file server routinely crashes. Observations: When the server crashes, it does not blue screen, it just locks up completely. Even the mouse is unresponsive. If you leave the server locked up long enough, it will eventually reboot itself and hang on the Windows splash screen. There is absolutely zero useful Event Viewer evidence of a problem. The logs go from routine logging to an Unexplained Shutdown Event the next morning when I have to hard reset the server to get it to boot. 90% of the time the server does not boot cleanly, it hangs on the Windows splash screen. I don't have any light to shed here. When the server hangs all I can do is hard reset it and try again. Even after a successful boot and chkdsk /r operation, if you reboot the machine, you have a 90% chance it won't back up again cleanly. The back story: This server started crashing during nightly backups about a month ago. I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot the problem and eventually had to give up because I could not keep coming to the office at 4 AM to try to get the server back online. One Friday I got lucky and the server stayed up for its entire full backup. I took this opportunity to restore the full backup to a temporary server I set up and switched all my users to the temporary. Then I reloaded the ailing file server. I kept all my users on the temporary file server for about 3 weeks. I installed the same Backup Exec Remote Agent and Trend Micro A/V client on the temporary server that I was using on the regular file server. During this time, I had absolutely no problems backing up the temporary server. I tested the reloaded file server extensively. I rebooted the server once an hour every day for 3 weeks trying to make it fail. It never did. I felt confident that the reload was the answer to my problems. I moved all of the data from the temporary server back to the regular server. I got 3 nightly backups out of it before it locked up again and started the familiar failure to boot cleanly behavior. This weekend I decided to monitor the file server through the entire backup job. I RDPd into the file server and also into the server running Backup Exec. On the file server I opened the Task Manager so I could view the processes and watch CPU and memory usage. Everything was running smoothly for about 60GB worth of backup. Then I noticed that the byte count of the backup job in Backup Exec had stopped progressing. I looked back over at my RDP session into the file server, and I was getting real time updates about CPU and memory usage still - both nearly 0%, which is unusual. Backups usually hover around 40% usage for the duration of the backup job. Let me reiterate this point: The screen was refreshing and I was getting real time Task Manager updates - until I clicked on the Start menu. The screen went black and the server locked up. In truth, I think the server had already locked up, the video card just hadn't figured it out yet. I went back into my bag of trick: driving to the office and hard reseting the server over and over again when it hangs up at the Windows splash screen. I did this for 2 hours without getting a successful boot. I started panicking because I did not have a decent backup to use to get everything back onto the working temporary file server. Once I exhausted everything I knew to do, I took a deep breath, booted to the Windows Server 2003 CD and performed a repair installation of Windows. The server came back up fine, with all of my data intact. I can now reboot the server at will and it will come back up cleanly. The problem is that I'm afraid as soon as I try to back that data up again I will back at square one. So let me sum things up: Here is what I've done so far to troubleshoot this server: Deleted and recreated the RAID 5 sets. Initialized the drives. Reloaded the server with a fresh Server 2003 install. Confirmed with Dell that I have installed the latest, Dell approved BIOS and NIC drivers. Uninstalled / reinstalled the Backup Exec Remote Agent. Uninstalled the Trend Micro A/V client. Configured the server not to reboot itself after a blue screen so I can see any stop error. I used to think the server was blue screening, but since I enabled this setting I now know that the server just completely locks up. Run chkdsk /r from the Windows Recovery Console. Several errors were found and corrected, but did not help my problem. Help confirm or deny the following assumptions: There are two problems at work here. Why the server is locking up in the first place, and why the server won't boot cleanly after a lockup. This is ultimately a software problem. The server works fine and can be rebooted cleanly all day long - until the first lockup - following a fresh OS load or even a Repair installation. This is not a problem with Backup Exec in general. All of my other servers back up just fine. For the record, all of the other servers run Server 2003, and some of them house more data than the file server in question here. Any help is appreciated. The irony is almost too much to bear. Backing up my data is what is jeopardizing it.
