• AS2 Play Movie Clip OnMouseUp not working

  My plan is to play mc_1 on MouseDown and mc_2 on MouseUp. The trouble I am having is that when I release, mc_2 is not playing. mc_1 plays fine when MouseDown is initiated. Here's my code: stop(); slide_mc.stop(); slideback_mc.stop(); onMouseDown = function() { _root.slide_mc.play(); } onMouseUp = function() { _root.slideback_mc.play(); } I am new to AS2, I have tried looking but can't seem to find anything like this... • Discover the environment and relative path of the running application

  Hi, While playing with RubyCocoa, I keep progressing with my idea for my application. Because my application will be going to use configuration files, I would like to know how I discover the relative path to store these inside my application structure (or if a better idea emerges, please elaborate also the "why"). Also good for me to know is to discover environment variables, such as operating system version, the amount of memory that is available and such. Hyperlinks would be awesome too. • How to align centre a custom label in highcharts

  See a jsfiddle example I am trying to align the custom label in the /labels/items JSON element to hang right under the title and subtitle. Playing with firebug I can alter the SVG text element for the label and add text-align='middle' and change the x='' attribute to have the same value as the title's x attribute. This makes it perfectly align under the title and stay there when resized but I can't figure out how to make the highcharts library generate this source. Maybe there is a better way to add another label under the subtitle?

• Autoplay an Audio File on Mobile Safari

  Hey guys, I've got a little system dashboard web app that I've written, replete with alarm notifications. I've had it working for quite some time on mobile safari, but recently wanted to add audio to the alarm notifications to allow me to easily know when there are alarms and I'm not looking directly at the display. The alarm notifications are populated through a (relatively) constantly polling ajax request that pulls in and displays an alarm banner if alarms are present. I wanted to add an auto-playing 'alarm' sound as well, but no dice for Safari Mobile. I've tried using HTML5 and embedded objects with no avail. The Apple documentation does state that you can't auto-play an audio file and it must be activated through user action to conserve bandwidth. Has anyone found a way around this in a WLAN setting?

• Bi-directional view model syncing with "live" collections and properties (MVVM)

  I am getting my knickers in a twist recently about View Models (VM). Just like this guy I have come to the conclusion that the collections I need to expose on my VM typically contain a different type to the collections exposed on my business objects. Hence there must be a bi-directional mapping or transformation between these two types. (Just to complicate things, on my project this data is "Live" such that as soon as you change a property it gets transmitted to other computers) I can just about cope with that concept, using a framework like Truss, although I suspect there will be a nasty surprise somewhere within. Not only must objects be transformed but a synchronization between these two collections is required. (Just to complicate things I can think of cases where the VM collection might be a subset or union of business object collections, not simply a 1:1 synchronization). I can see how to do a one-way "live" sync, using a replicating ObservableCollection or something like CLINQ. The problem then becomes: What is the best way to create/delete items? Bi-directinal sync does not seem to be on the cards - I have found no such examples, and the only class that supports anything remotely like that is the ListCollectionView. Would bi-directional sync even be a sensible way to add back into the business object collection? All the samples I have seen never seem to tackle anything this "complex". So my question is: How do you solve this? Is there some technique to update the model collections from the VM? What is the best general approach to this?

• Is "Server not found" error related to Activclient?

  Users are getting sporadic "Server not found" errors after idling in the browser. We have a HTTPS web application (Apache/Tomcat) using NSS for authentication on the server. The error occurs when a user opens the application and later lets it sit idle/untouched for 15 minutes. When they try to access the application they can get a "Server not found" error. Users use CAC cards with ActivClient software and our web application uses the certificates for authentication and authorization. We have been able to recreate the problem but have been unable to diagnose it. In recreating the problem the server is getting a series of "Unable to find the certificate or key necessary for authentication" errors in the NSS log associated with the browser error. These erros don't occur until the user tries to access the idle application. When the application is idle for 15 minutes the PIN is not requested yet the PIN Cache timeout in ActivClient is set at 15 minutes. All our server side timeout parameters are set to hours not minutes. IE 6 is our browser and NSS is using TLS. We have tried modifying "SetEnvIf User-Agent ".MSIE." ssl-unclean-shutdown" with no improvement. I understand that the PIN cache timeout and SSL session don't have a 1:1 relationship but the timing is suspicious. Can't find anything in the windows error logs that indicates a problem (security logs are not accessible to us). Any suggestions as to how to identify the cause of the problem would be appreciated.

• Flex: Would a computational engine for a Connect-4 type game be too slow?

  OK, I was just fooling around in my spare time and have made this cool interface and game-playing code for a Connect-4 type game, written in Flex and playable by 2 human players in Flash. It accurately detects wins, etc. I'm smart enough to know that I've done the easy part. Before I dig into an AI for game play, I wanted to ask if this is the kind of thing that can really be handled computationally by a Flash plugin. It seems to me that for every turn up until the end there are 8 possible moves, 8 responses to each move, etc. So wouldn't a perfect engine have to be able to potentially see 8^8 moves (over 16 million), and a fairly good engine see up to a million? I don't know game coding so this is new to me. What's a reasonable move horizon for such a game to be able to see?

• Best practices for using memcached in Rails?

  Hello everybody, as database transcations in our app are getting more and more time consuming, we have started to use memcached to reduce the amount of queries passed to MySQL. All in all, it works fine and really saves a lot of time. But as caching was "silently appearing" as a workaround to give the app more juice, a lot of our models now contain code like this: def self.all_cached Rails.cache.fetch('object_name') { find( :all, :include => [associations]) } end This is getting more and more a pain as filling and flushing the cache happens in several classes accross the application. Now, I was wondering if there was a better way to abstract memcached logic to make it more powerful and easy to use across all needed models? I was thinking about having some kind of memcached-module which is included in all needed modules. But before playing around, I thought: Let's ask experts first :-) Thanks Matt

• In MVC2, how do I validate fields that aren't in my data model?

  I am playing with MVC2 in VS 2010 and am really getting to like it. In a sandbox application that I've started from scratch, my database is represented in an ADO.NET entity data model and have done much of the validation for fields in my data model using Scott Guthrie's "buddy class" approach which has worked very well. However, in a user registration form that I have designed and am experimenting with, I'd like to add a 'confirm email address' or a 'confirm password' field. Since these fields obviously wouldn't exist in my data model, how would I validate these fields client side and server side? I would like to implement something like 'Html.ValidationMessageFor', but these fields don't exist in the data model. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hey all, I made a very simple application to start playing around with Android development. It works fine on the emulator, but it gives me the following error when I try to install it on my HTC Hero (v1.5): Sorry! • Difference in amplitude from the same source using FFT

  Hi, I have a question regarding use of FFT. Using function getBand(int i) with Minim i can extract the amplitude of a specific frequency and do pretty maps of it. Works great. However, this is a more of a curiosity question. When i look at the values extracted from playing the same song two twice using the same frequency (so the amplitude should be identical) but i get very different values - why is this? 0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.08706585,0.23708777,0.83046436,0.74603105,0.30447206 0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.0,0.08706585,0.4790409,0.9608221,0.83046436,0.74603105

• Have loaded a php variable into flash but cant apply it in a function...

  hi I have created an actionscript function which stops an animation on a specific frame which works fine. I have then loaded in a php file with a variable which will contain the number for the frame i want the animation to stop on. • Open source VideoPlayer / AudioPlayer / MediaPlayer GUI / UI resource available?

  Hi, I'm looking for a user interface for a MediaPlayer which should be able to play video as well as audio files. Furthermore it needs the following things (nothing fancy): TextView for playing time Progress Bar for progress visulization Play/Pause/Stop buttons NO playlist functionality required, the player will only play a single item (that's why I don't need next/previous buttons). It sounds pretty much like the standard audio-player of Android = 2.0. Sure, I could try to find its source code but that would require to tediously check out the entire source.   hi, I'm trying to manipulate the speed (and pitch) of a sound while playing. so i played around with iphone sdk's AudioUnit. downloaded iPhoneMultichannelMixerTest and tried to add an AUComponent to the graph (in this case a formatconverter). but i get (pretty soon) following error when building: #import <AudioToolbox/AudioToolbox.h> #import <AudioUnit/AudioUnit.h> ... AUComponentDescription varispeed_desc(kAudioUnitType_FormatConverter, kAudioUnitSubType_Varispeed, kAudioUnitManufacturer_Apple); ^^ error: 'kAudioUnitSubType_Varispeed' was not declared in this scope. any ideas why? the documentation on this topic doesn't help me at all (just api doc isn't very helpful when having no clue about the concept behind). there are no examples on how to wire these effects together and manipulating there properties...so maybe i'm totally wrong, anyway any hint is great. thx for help.

• Console-like control that allows full control over individual text formatting

  I'm tinkering with writing a simple text-based role-playing game. I would like to use WinForms, and utilize WinForm controls for the UI and simple text for the output. The catch is, I would like to have complete control over the formatting of the individual text - some words being different colors, etc. A simple console control would suffice, as that would provide control over text colors, but it would be nice to also be able to change style, font and size. Less important: it would be nice to have complete control over where text appears in the control through a coordinate system, as with DOS windows of old. I'd appreciate suggestions on the best method of implementing this. Perhaps there is a better method I had not considered for rendering the output of a text-based game.

• AVAudioPlayer currentTime problem

  Hi, I'm trying to use the audioplayer with a slider in order to seek into a track (nothing complicated). But I have a weird behavior... for some value of currentTime (between 0 and trackDuration), the player stop playing the track, and goes into "audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying:successfully:" with successfully to NO. And it did not go into "audioPlayerDecodeErrorDidOccur:error:" It's like it can't read the time i'm giving to it. For exemple the duration of the track is: 295.784424 seconds i set the currentTime to 55.0s (ie: 54.963878 or 54.963900 or 54.987755, etc... when printed as %f). The "crashes" always happen when the currentTime is 54.987755... and I really don't understand why... So if you have any idea... ^^

• WPF MediaElement pauses when trying to play Windows Media Center recording

  I have an WPF application that starts a live tv recording using Windows Media Center, using the Windows Media Center SDK, waits 2 minutes and then plays the currently recording file (.wtv) in a WPF MediaElement. The problem is that the video visual will freeze and it is not consistent on when it happens. I have looked into it and discovered that the timeline is still moving so the MediaElement still thinks that the video is playing. This happens only when trying to play a video file that is currently being recorded, previously recorded shows play just fine. Both Media Center and Media Player can play those files without any hiccups; it is only the WPF MediaElement that has this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

• Why is memory management so visible in Java VM?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java VMs compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined. I'd also be interested in references to technical papers/blog-posts/etc explaining design choices behind JVM GC implementations, across different JVMs or compared to other interpreted language VMs (e.g. comparing Sun or IBM JVM to Parrot). Are there technical reasons why JVM users still have to deal with non-auto-tuning heap/permgen sizes?

• RESTful services and update operations

  I know REST is meant to be resource-oriented, which roughly translates to CRUD operations on these resources using standard HTTP methods. But what I just wanted to update a part of a resource? For example, let's say I have Payment resource and I wanted to mark its status as "paid". I don't want to POST the whole Payment object through HTTP (sometimes I don't even have all the data). What would be the RESTful way of doing this? I've seen that Twitter uses the following approach for updating Twitter statuses: http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/update.xml?status=playing with cURL and the Twitter API Is this approach in "the spirit" of REST? • Problem extracting text from RSS feeds

  Hi, I am new to the world of Ruby and Rails. I have seen rails cast 190 and I just started playing with it. I used selector gadget to find out the CSS and XPath I have the following code.. require 'rubygems' require 'nokogiri' require 'open-uri' url = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rss" doc = Nokogiri::HTML(open(url)) doc.xpath('//a').each do |paragraph| puts paragraph.text end When I extracted text from a normal HTML page with css, I could get the extracted text on the console. But when I try to do the same either with CSS or XPath for the RSS Feed for the following URL mentioned in the code above, I dont get any output. How do you extract text from RSS feeds?? I also have another silly question. Is there a way to extract text from 2 different feeds and display it on the console something like url1 = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rss" url2 = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/rss" Looking forward for your help and suggestions Thank You Gautam

  Theres no easy way to say this so ill just say it in the form of a story. Im looking for advice on which loops and where. Here goes: out of 200-odd fields in the database, i need to run the following against each field. extract allowed values using extract function place allowed values into an array loop the array to be inserted into a db table first check records dont already exist. if they dont exist insert into table. ive found myself playing with this for the past two days and getting tangled and tangled in loops. wondering if anybody can guide.

• How closely related is music composition to coding?

  It seems to me as if there are a higher proportion of musicians in the programming field than in the general public. Maybe it's just an illusion caused by the fact that I'm an amateur guitarist myself, so I tend to notice coding musicians (or musical coders?) more. But I wonder if there really is some connection. Perhaps a shared set of skills or an innate quality that makes it more likely for someone who enjoys programming to also enjoy playing and composing music. How closely related is music composition to coding? I'd especially like to hear from the musicians around here.

  Hi! I'm playing around with Java's Reflection. I have an abstract class Base with a constructor. abstract class Base { public Base( String foo ) { // do some magic } } I have some further classes extending Base. They don't contain much logic. I want to instantiate them with Base's constructor, without having to write some proxy contructors in those derived classes. And of course, I want to instantiate those derived classes with Reflection. Say: Class cls = SomeDerivedClass.class; Constructor constr; constr = cls.getConstructor( new Class[] { String.class } ); // will return null Class clsBase = Base.class; constr = clsBase.getConstructor( new Class[] { String.class } ); // ok Base obj = (Base) constr.newInstance( new Object[] { "foo" } ); // will throw InstantiationException because it belongs to an abstract class Any ideas, how I can instantiate a derived class with Base's constructor? Or must I declare those dumb proxy constructors?
