• Port Forwarding for Remote Desktop

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• Win8 Change A Password

  I have a non-domain machine that I use with our company's domain resources regularly. I upgraded to Windows 8, and the "Change a password" option went away from the Ctrl-Alt-Del window. Can't seem to google anything about this subject, or find a way to access that password change dialog. I tried running the .reg file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63014-ctrl-alt-del-screen-add-remove-change-password.html with no luck. I also tried to Disable "Remove Change Password" via gpedit.msc. I could do it from my domain laptop, but I like to do it on this machine because it updates all my saved copies of those credentials. My local account is tied to my hotmail account if that matters.

• Real time mirroring between two sql server databases

  Hi, I'm a c# programmer, not a DBA and I've had the (mis)fortune to be handed a database admin task. So please bear this in mind when answering this question. What I've been asked to do is to create a real time two-way mirror between two databases with a 10 Megabit connection between them. So when either changes it updates the other. This is not a standard data mirroring/failover task where one DB is the master and the other is a backup - both are live and each needs to instantly reflect changes made to the other. In my head this sounds like a tall order, one which may even be impossible - after all in a rapidly changing environment with lots of users this is going to be massively resource intensive and create locks and queues of jobs all over the place. Is it possible? If so, can anyone either give me some basic instructions and/or point me at some places to start my reading and research? Cheers, Matt

• Laptop connected to external monitor results in desktop overflow

  I have a laptop (MSi FX600) connected to an external monitor (Toshiba 19AV500U) with the screen resolution set to the monitors recommended setting of 1440x900. The problem is the desktop is overflowing the display, meaning all edges of the desktop are cut off, so I cannot see the close, minimize buttons on the top and I only see half of the taskbar at the bottom. I have tried many different resolutions but none of them solve the problem. I have had this same problem when connecting to other external monitors in the past, but not all of them, it seems to be fairly random. I have tried to find a way to manually adjust the resolution but I cannot see a way to do this in my settings. All windows updates are up to date, I am connecting through an HDMI cable and I have it set to display only on the external monitor and not extended desktop.

• SqlServer2005 Enterprise Fast Recovery, SqlAgent Availability, and Replication

  I have a database under SqlServer2005 Enterprise 64bit sp3, that is in phase 3 of 3 of recovery after a reboot without normal shutdown. It looks like with fast Recovery, the database became available when recovery moved into phase 3. However, it seems (based on message in SqlAgent log), that SqlAgent is "started" but not available to run jobs until recovery completes. I have other databases on the same server that are transactional publications. It seems to me that if I let users update the published databases, transactions will start to build up in the log, but won't be moved to the distribution database or onto the subscribers because SqlAgent isn't running jobs. • Multi-Application Server Environment and Memcached Security

  We are looking to integrate Memcached into our infrastructure, but have a security concern before we do. We run several platforms including ASP.NET and Coldfusion and have many app developers working many little applications across the different platforms. The concern is this: App A places item "dog" into cache. App B reads item "dog" (or worse: App B updates item "dog") After this happens, App A either retrieves bad information, or has already had its information viewed, aka "stolen". What we would like to do is make it so that each app can only interact with its own sandbox, and may not interfere with or read other application's data. Is this possible? Thanks.

• Apache 2.4.2 with PHP 5.4.4 crashes as soon as phpinfo() script is opened

  As soon as i open a phpinfo() script called version.php apache stops working. Here is the error.log file. My configuration (my local development machine): Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 with latest updates Apache 2.4.2 win32 from Apache Lounge PHP 5.4.4 VC9 x86 TS from PHP For Windows php5apache2_4.dll (PHP 5.4.4) taken from Apache Lounge php5apache2_4.dll-php-5.4-win32.zip PATH environment variable is PATH=C:\WAMP\Apache\bin;C:\WAMP\PHP and installation folders (unzipping) are: C:/WAMP/Apache C:/WAMP/PHP Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86/x64 installed and updated. So everything looks fine to me. • Gateway MX6440 CPU Upgrade

  I have received an a Gateway MX6440 laptop as a freebie, but I'm interested in upgrading its AMD Turion 64 ML-32 (socket 754) to something faster (and more cache). I know the range of processors that could work based on the family list in Wikipedia. However, this computer has the stock bios, and any updates I haven't applied from Gateway doesn't specify processor support. I'm looking to go to at least a 2.2 (ML-40). Has anybody upgraded the processor in this model or other in the series success or failure and do you happen to have any guides handy for working with the heat sink? Any Googling I have done keeps hitting RAM marketers. Update Computer died before I had a chance to try this out.

• EBS+RAID10+XFS slower than EBS+RAID10+EXT3 using MySQL?

  We're currently using EC2 with 16 EBS volumes in RAID10 configuration for our MySQL data. I know some people don't recommend to put EBS volumes to RAID but that's not what I'm concerned about at the moment. Current format is ext3, but we're experimenting with moving to xfs, given many reports that it is faster. However, we're actually experiencing a performance degradation when the partition was converted to xfs - a benchmark run with inserts, updates, selects and deletes was more than 10 seconds slower using xfs. Any idea what could be the problem? Below is the fstab entry (really only changed ext3 to xfs). Database tables are innodb and we are using innodb_file_per_table. /dev/mapper/vg_data-lv_data /data xfs noatime 0 0 Thanks.

• Dell Inspiron/Windows Vista sleep/hibernate issue

  When I hit the sleep button in Windows the computer looks like it's going into Sleep mode but a few seconds later it's restarted, and stops with this error message: internal hard disk drive not found To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics. The computer is running Windows Vista (SP2) and I have installed all available Windows Updates and the latest manufacturer drivers. I have already tried to reseated the drive, ran the onboard diagnostics and there were no errors. I have changed the power settings for all devices where it's available so that they are not allowed to wake up the computer. Any ideas?

  Once i tried to re-install Windows 7. I formatted C drive, during installation system was hanged during the step "installing updates". then i cancelled the process. When i tried again, after booting from CD a black screen with a mouse pointer appears. No further progress. The mouse pointer can be moved. I tried with some other disks also.   I have a thumb drive on which I take many of my files with me. I would like to synchronize it with my computer automatically when I connect it. I currently have a script run every time I connect it so that I can do the many things that need to be done when it connects (check for updates to the portable applications, etc.). I want my synchronization utility to: Detect conflicts work correctly when I move files or change the folder structure tell the difference between a file that was deleted on one side and a file that was added on the other work from the command line or at least have a command that will open up a window provide a confirmation screen before doing anything The Windows Briefcase does all of these except the command line. Is there any program that does all of these, or is there a way to synchronize the briefcase from the command line?

  I am a big iPod user (especially podcasts). I have used iPod touch, iPod classic and iPod nano. I noticed that iTunes stops downloading podcasts that you no longer listen to and stops downloading them. Is there a way to force iTunes to download all episodes of podcasts irrespective of whether you listen to them or not? I am not interested in just clicking a episode to make iTunes think that I'm listening. I need some kind of programmatic work around or batch script that runs and updates all podcasts/episodes automatically.

  Somewhat predictably, removing iTunes on Mac OS X is a long arduous process, described at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224 — which I have followed. As far as I can tell, I have purged every trace of the accursed iTunes from my system. Yet Software Update repeatedly prompts me with updates for iTunes, which I don't want anything to do with, despite my saying "Not now" each time. How can I convince Software Update to leave me alone, and never bother me with mention of iTunes again? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.4 Build 10F569, and the update being offerred is iTunes 9.2.1. (Note: Not a duplicate of OS X: why Software Update suggests to update removed application?, whose accepted answer is simply to follow the instructions I mentioned above.)

• Checking for orphaned snapshots - ESXi5

  So we had some issues with our passive mail node over the weekend doing vmtools updates and to resolve a problem we had to revert to a snapshot and then reseed all the databases across. All in all everything seemed fine, the server works and CCR copy status is running fine. I used the "Delete All" option this morning to remove the snapshot and the process according to vCenter has completed with no errors and no "Needs Consolidation" flag. This all seems fine until I check the Datastore that holds the VM on our SAN and I can clearly see snapshots that are pretty big [see attached image]. These do not seem to be changing size and the data modified is around the time the works were started for the vmtools update. Does this possibly mean that at some stage, possibly during reversion or hard resetting of the VM, that they have become orphaned? Are there any methods to check orphaned status of snapshots? We are running ESXi5.0 Update 1 with storage provide by an EMC SAN. Enterprise plus is the license level.

• Driver problems with rerunning WIM capture

  How do I handle driver problems associated with creating a new WIM file using a previously created image as a base? I am using a custom MDT image which installs Windows 7, Office 2010, etc which was created from a previously deployed base image of Windows 7 + SP 1 + updates. When the driver injection is enabled I receive a group of messages (collected from different logs, screens, etc). If I turn the preinstall driver injection off things work as expected. If I leave it on I receive the following messages. windows cannot install required files 0x80004005 8004004 non zero return code ltiapply rc=31 Unhandled error returned by LTIApply: a device attached to the system is not functioning. (-2147024865 0x8007001F)

• nVidia Driver - Laptop is forced as one of my monitors

  I am trying to get my nVidia Driver to correctly configure my multi-monitor setup. I have my laptop in a docking station and two monitors hooked up to it. I had an old driver that this worked correctly with. However, that driver was causing a lot of "Deferred Procedure Calls" so I upgraded to a newer driver. But now I am forced to use my Laptop monitor as one of my monitors. Here is the image in the nVida Control Panel: As you can see, both monitors are recognized, but the only options available are to use one of them with the Laptop Display. Any Ideas? I am running Windows XP (latest updates), I have an nVidia Quadro 1500M. I have tried several different driver versions and all the new ones have this issue.

  We're running unattended-upgrades on debian squeeze, and would like it to run once a week, only on a Wednesday morning. To attempt this, we have set: APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "7" in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades And then touched the /var/lib/apt/periodic/update-stamp to set the timestamp to a Wednesday, for instance: touch -t 201211280000 /var/lib/apt/periodic/update-stamp Running: stamp=$(date --date=$(date -r /var/lib/apt/periodic/update-stamp --iso-8601) +%s 2/dev/null) date -u --date="1970-01-01 $stamp sec GMT" Gives the correct timestamp: Wed Nov 28 00:00:00 UTC 2012 However, unattended-upgrades then seems to ignore this, and run the updates on a Saturday morning. Could anyone enlighten me as to how this parameter works, and how to set up upgrades to run on a Wednesday?

  Hi all, I have a friend with a Toshiba Satellite A200. He's running Vista HP SP2 32-bit. For some reason, when he attempts to uninstall Open Office or some other programs, a dialog box appears, which states, "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." After I click OK, another dialog box entitled "Installed Updates" says that "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall _. Please contact your system administrator." Any ideas?   I need at least Java 1.6 to run a program that someone else in my lab wrote On the Java website it tells me to update Java via apple's software update function, i've run this a few times but it only got up to Java 1.5.0_24 and it now says no more updates are available for my computer Is there another way to update Java on a Mac? Is my operating system maybe to old for Java 1.6? i'm not sure what i'm running exactly, and i can't find a list of what mac operating systems run what versions of Java because the java site just suggests using Mac's software update.

• RHN Satellite / Spacewalk custom channels, best practice?

  Hi, I'm currently setting up RHN Satellite, and all works well. I'm in the process of creating custom channels, since we have certain software which should be available for all nodes of satellite, e.g. puppet, facter, subversion, php (newer version than present in base). I've tried to find documentation on best practices on this. How should they be set up, how to handle different arch, how to handle noarch packages. How to sync updates to dependencies when updating a custom package in a custom channel (e.g. php is updated, how to fetch all updated dependencies). The channel management documentation from RHEL (http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Network_Satellite/5.3/Channel_Management_Guide/html/Channel_Management_Guide-Custom_Channel_and_Package_Management.html) doesn't provide me with enough information on how to solve any of theese issues. All tips, tricks and information regarding this would be great!

  Possible Duplicate: Free Usenet reader for Mac OS X I'm interested in keyboard-navigation-friendly usenet clients for OSX. I have tried (and bought) Unison and Thunderbird, but both of these end up requiring a fair amount of mouse use to move around. What I want is something I can task-switch to, check my latest updates, and switch away from, all without having to take my hands off of the keyboard. I should clarify; this is for an internal, private nntp server, so Google Groups and sundry -- basically all web news readers -- won't do for me.

After the reboot tomcat doesnt start with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. • When using TCP load balancing with HAProxy, does all outbound traffic flow through the LB?

  I am setting up an app to be hosted using VMs(probably amazon, but that is not set in stone) which will require both HTTP load balancing and load balancing a large number(50k or so if possible) of persistant TCP connections. The amount of data is not all that high, but updates are frequent. Right now I am evaluating load balancers and am a bit confused about the architecture of HAProxy. If I use HAProxy to balance the TCP connections, will all the resulting traffic have to flow through the load balancer? If so, would another solution(such as LVS or even nginx_tcp_proxy_module) be a better fit?
