• Talking with a Bittorrent client listening on a port?

  I have one of my computers seeding a torrent file on port 45000. I am trying to write a small client in python (or perhaps perl) that helps me to determine the types of messages this client supports for which I need to perhaps do a handshake with the client. In Azureus, this is done using a call like peer.getSupportedMessages(). Is it possible to do this using some library in python or perl? • What is the best platform/language for a 3D game in a web browser?

  I have enjoyed making 2D games in various langues (actionscript 3.0, java, python, others) but now I'm ready to move into 3D and to really get me amped up while learning 3D development I'm going to attempt to make a 3D multiplayer game (I already have server written in python). I'm looking for a platform that will run a 3D game well in the browser on low end computers with low end internet. What first came to mind was try Java or use flash/silver light with a 3D framework but I wanted to ask the good people of stackoverflow since performance is a big part of my needs and also good documentation is a plus since I'm just starting 3D development. (the programming language does not matter)

• Java: How do I get the IP of the local interface that can reach a remote IP?

  I have a Java application that registers a server component in a service provider, and then sends the service name to a client. The client uses the service name to get an address out of the service provider to the server. However, the server has several interfaces only 1 of which the client get get at, so the service must be registered with the right IP. We discovered the client through a broadcast, so I have the client IP and an Enumeration of the computers network interfaces. How do I match the IP to an interface, not knowing what the netmask of the client IP is? Spontaneously I imagine turning all the addresses to ints and chomping the local ips with their netmask and looking for a 'best match', but I wonder if there is a better way? (this is an enterprise(tm) solution, so cutting out the service provider isn't an option, at least not w/o a political campaign first ;) )

• Writing an OS for Motorola 68K processor. Can I emulate it? And can I test-drive OS development?

  Next term, I'll need to write a basic operating system for Motorola 68K processor as part of a course lab material. Is there a Linux emulator of a basic hardware setup with that processor? So my partners and I can debug quicker on our computers instead of physically restarting the board and stuff. Is it possible to apply test-driven development technique to OS development? Code will be mostly assembly and C. What will be the main difficulties with trying to test-drive this? Any advice on how to do it?

• Best way to notify several java applets/applications of a change on a server

  I need to know the best (fastest) way to have a server (preferably a php based one, but a jsp/servlet one could be set up as well using google app engine) notify several java applets/applications that a change has occurred to the data. The way i am picturing this to work will be very similar to that of the way i think an online java game (like Runescape) works User 1: Changes data on server. Server: returns success to User 1, notifies connected computers of change. Connected Computer 1: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 2: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 3: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 4: processes change, returns success to server. I am hoping to have this entire process complete in half a second, and not involve polling as there will be long durations of nothing, followed by a sudden moment where 4 events happen in succession.

• What features can I use during log in/out

  I know that this question is going to be painfully vague, but here it is any way. I have made an small console application designed to be run on Windows XP Pro computers. It will be run at log in and log out. The command to run this program will be set via GPO and will include command line operators to control what data the program sends. I have used a few built in C# classes to find out information about the computer, which is then sent of to a server as a web request. I need to know which of the following will have issues on a restricted user account on a domain. • jquery issues - it wont change it accordingly

  My coding isnt linking properly , its meant to use jquery to detect the OS and change the link accordingly , however it isn't.   Hi. I intend to make some software to be sold over internet. I've only created open-source before, so I have really no idea of how to protect it from being cracked and distributed as warez. Bearing in mind that I know like two programms that aren't either cracked or not really useful I decided that the only more or less reliable way may look like this: Connect to a server and provide licensing info and some sort of hardware summary info If everything is fine, the server returns some crucial missing parts of the program bound to that certain pc along with the usage limit of say 2 days That crucial stuff is not saved to hard drive, so it is downloaded every time the program starts, if the programm runs more than 2 days, data is downloaded again If the same info is used from different computers, suspend the customer account What do you think about this? It may seem a bit to restrictive, but I'd better make less sales at first then eventually see my precious killer app downloaded for free. Anyways, first I need some basic theory/tutorials/guides about how to ensure that user only uses a certain Java app if he has paid for it, so please suggest some. Thanks

• Are there any FTP programs which can automatically send the contents of a folder to a remote server?

  Are there any FTP programs which can automatically copy (or rather 'move') the contents of a folder to a remote server? I have of course googled this but only really found one or two ancient products which look really clunky and unmaintained. I was wondering if there's a way to do this from the command line or any better solution to the base problem. In more detail, new files get written to a folder every few hours. These new files need to be FTP'd elsewhere and then deleted. Mirroring or synchonisation systems are probably out of the picture as we need to delete the source files once they've been successfully transferred. If it's easier, the 'solution' could pull the files off the server (rather than the server pushing them to the client). The computers will both be Windows OS.

  I am working on web project. We are using flex as UI layer. My question is often we are writing core service layer separately from web/UI layer so we can reuse same services for different UI layer/technology. So practically is it possible to reuse same core layer services without any changes/addition in API with different kind of UI technologies/layers. For e.g. same core service layer with UI technology which supports synchronized request response (e.g. jsp etc.) and non synchronize or event driven UI technology (e.g Ajax, Flex, GWT etc.) or with multiple devices like (computers, mobiles, pdas etc.). Personally I feel its very tough to write core service layer without any knowledge of UI. Looking for thoughts from other people.

• Is this plain stupid: GIT Sharing Via DropBox?

  I realize that there are similar questions, but my question is slightly different. I'm wondering whether sharing a bare repository via a synchronized DropBox folder on multiple computers would work for sharing code via GIT. Really what I want to know is: is sharing a GIT repo via DropBox (the repo gets updated on each person's local drive) the same as sharing it from one centralized location, e.g., via SSH, git or HTTP? Is this the same or different from sharing a GIT repo via a shared network drive? Note: This is not an empirical question: it seems to work fine. I'm asking whether the way a GIT repo is structured is compatible with this way of sharing. EDIT To clarify/repeat, I'm talking about keeping the GIT repository on DropBox as a bare repository. I'm not talking about keeping the actual files that are under source control in DropBox.

  My question is very simple to expose: I have a few aplications that share data between then. I need a way to support that data sharing (cross several computers) and when one aplication changes data, others should be notified about that. My question is about what tecnologies could be usefull to me. The solution i realise at this moment is to have a database to share data and an external publish-subscribe system (like http://pubsub.codeplex.com/) to notify all applications when the data is changed. But i belive that could exist some helpfull solutions. Do you know any of then? Thanks.

  Hi everyone, When trying memcache:get, I'll get the following error message back: Message: Memcache::get() [memcache.get]: Server localhost (tcp 11211) failed with: Failed reading line from stream (0) I run a Windows 32bit test environment (XP) and here's how my code looks: function getMulti(array $keys) { $items = $this->memcache->get($keys); return $items; } My memcache servers are two local computers in the LAN that my dev. environment is connected to. Sure, I can turn the error logging off or just put an @ before the get function call, but that doesnt solve this issue. What can I do? Thanks a lot!

• Can anyone explain how to configure the title of my block? I can configure "teaser" and "image", but not "title".

  In content management, I want to configure the title of my block. I do not want the title to show up on the top of the actual page (I want it to show up just in the sidebar where the viewer can click on it). I want a different title on the page that it goes to after clicking the sidebar block. How do I do that? There is no configure button for "title", but there is one for "teaser" and "image". I have little experience with computers, so any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Strange PYTHONPATH problem

  I recently updated my python installation to 2.7 (previously 2.5), and I've noticed a strange problem where I cannot import certain modules that I created. I had no problem before. Normally, I edit the PYTHONPATH and add the directory I want to import modules. For some strange reason, I can no longer import. I checked my path in PYTHONPATH, and it looked correct. When I display the sys.path in an interpreter, I see the current directory prepended to every PYTHONPATH entry(i.e. 'c:\blah\blah c:\path\to\module') If I edit the sys.path by appending the directory that I want at the end of the list,everything works fine(i.e. 'c:\path\to\module\'). I never had to do this before. I'm on Windows 7 on two computers. Has anyone else had similar trouble?

  Which of these lines is more understandable, faster jsPerf, easier to maintain?: arr = bol ? [[-2,1],[-1,2]] : [[-1,0],[-1,1]]; //or arr = [[[-1,0],[-1,1]], [[-2,1],[-1,2]]][bol*1]; I usually write code for computers (not for humans), but this is starting to be a problem when I am not the only one maintaining the code and work for a team. I am unsure, the first example looks neat but are two different arrays, and the second is a single array and seem to transmit what is being done easier. I also considered using an if-else, but I don't like the idea of writing two arr = .... Or are there better options? I need serious guidance, I have never worried about others seeing my code.

  Hi guys, Recently I've being given a chance to develop a PMS (Practice Management System) software for a small physiotherapy clinic. I'm a computer science student and my course is predominately told on Linux. However, my client runs all their computers on vista or Windows 7. My ideas are to develop the client front end in Visual C# and access a central postgresql server. I'm a beginner in Windows Programming so I'm after advice on best practice on implement user rights and access levels in C# (WPF or Windows FORM). I've had a look into Credential class in Visual C# and access control list but please share your thoughts.   I will make a PXE-server on Ubuntu for the installations of Windows XP and 7. When a computer starts from the network, then it should be display a menu with, for example "installation of XP" and the next item "installation of 7". When I select one of these items, the installation must start. I won't use an image, wds or FOG because the computers aren't the same and there a different departments in the company with a different configuration, programs etc. Neither Windows Server, only an Ubuntu PXE-server How I should start with making that?   Hi All, Is there an elegant way to make a program detect a new computer that is connected to the network? I would like my program to "auto-sense" a new computer being connected on the network (they're on the same network). Like a USB device being connected to the computer. What I'm doing now is to save a list of all computers in the network from time to time. Another approach is to PING all available IPs on the subnet. Are there any other elegant approaches? Thanks!

• working with files on "start without debugging"

  I'm programming in C, and I have the following problem: I use fopen and try to read from a csv file, that is currently storred in the folder of the exe file of the program. the program works fine in debug mode and release mode, but when I try to run the program in "start without debugging" on visual studio 2008 express edition, the program stops working and windows is showing a message: "*.exe has stopped working. a program caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I've tried running the program on several computers, and it's the same. another information I can give you is that if I enter the full path of the file (C:....file.csv) - then is works just fine, without any problem. I know I didn't write any code, but I hope someone will have an idea why this can happend. thanks is advance.

  I have to teach Java programming to school students and all are around the age of 15. None of them had any previous experience in programming. That is, I have to start from the very basics. I do like to make the sessions more interesting, and to make them love programming. I do need simple problems or puzzles -- not complex ones, simple ones -- that can increase their curiosity, and made them think and love programming. I do like to have problems for all of the concepts (like branching, looping, encapsulation, inheritance, composition, etc.,). Notes: I do have a time-frame of 1 hour for each session. Computers are not available. Maybe I can bring my laptop and show a demo to them. There are 7 students in the class.

  Every time i updat my website system UI\Jquery. Users complain that things are not working for them and that they have bugs. Users are internet\computer dummies so they dont know how to clear the coockies or the cache of the browser, so i need to connect to each one of their computers and do it by myself. I spend lots off hours doing it and they always complain. Some of the useres use Chrome, some Firefox. Googled and found no solution for this, Is there any client code operation that will command the browser to clrear its cache or even pop up browser window wich will ask user to confirm the clear?

• Need help on understanding Mobile First concept

  So, I worked on responsive sites before but I'm on my way to build my first responsive site now. I opened some articles on the subject, and boom: Mobile First.. I have no idea how I skipped that concept till now. From the beginning I cant seem to understand whole thing (except that number of mobile devices will take out soon desktop computers) and here is why. How I'm supposed to know how my site will look for desktop version, if I design it for mobile first? I mean, on the smallest device I will have to eventually hide some content etc, how I'm supposed to know what to hide and move things, when I don't know how the site will look on bigger screen? Isn't stripping the things easier?!?! For me (right now), the Mobile First concept looks to me like building pyramid upside down.
